Abstract In order to access exotic physics, the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is going for an increase in collision energy and the beam luminosity. The experiments at LHC are going for an upgrade of the detectors and readout as well as data acquisition system to cope up with the increase in the data volume. A high speed data acquisition system is essential to handle the high data rate ( $1{-}3\scriptstyle \sim $ TB/s). We discuss a data processing unit (DPU) which is placed in the radiation free counting room. It receives data from the detector electronics, does online processing like clustering and reconstruction to compress the data volume and then send it to high bandwidth computing notes. In this manuscript, we discuss the readout chain architecture of the DPU and its associated high speed links.
