Abstract The barrel muon chambers of the CMS experiment are made assembling quadruplets of 4 layers of rectangular drift tubes. We present the performance of a prototype of such quadruplets exposed at a muon beam. Characteristics as noise, efficiency, drift velocity and resolution, are studied for various data taking conditions, as well as the effects of the magnetic field. A special emphasis is given to the performance aspects related to the trigger capability of the chambers.
