Phil Cook on Instagram: "It is surprisingly easy to make your own fuel gel. All you really need are three ingredients: eggshells, vinegar and alcohol. Gel fuels like sterno are useful because they provide a clean burning flame with minimal risk of spilling the fuel. Making a gel fuel requires encapsulating a combustible liquid inside a gelatinous solid. In this case, I make the gel by first creating a solution of calcium acetate, the primary biproduct of the reaction between the calcium carbonate in eggshells and the acetic acid in vinegar. Boiling the liquid concentrates the calcium acetate, which is really soluble in water, but much less soluble in alcohols. So when the alcohol fuel is added, it immediately causes the calcium acetate to precipitate out as a solid, trapping the alcohol in

Romania on Instagram: "Ever heard of a vâltoare? This traditional washing machine, hidden away in rural Romania, harnesses the power of flowing water to cleanse clothes in a way that’s both simple and sustainable. It’s a fascinating peek into the past and a testament to human ingenuity. The vâltoare works by diverting water into a wooden basin where it swirls vigorously, scrubbing clothes against the wooden walls. No need for soap here—the force of the water does all the work, leaving garments fresh and clean. This method not only saves on detergents but also offers an eco-friendly alternative to modern washing machines. Embracing sustainability and simplicity, the vâltoare is a piece of cultural heritage that connects us to our ancestors’ resourceful ways. It’s a reminder of how traditi
Treecard on Instagram: "Did you know that pecan trees contain a natural, soap-like substance called saponins? 🌰🫧 When mixed with water — or when it rains 🌧️💦 — it will result in a biodegradable soap that is safe for the environment and can be used to wash clothes, hair, etc. 🧼🌳 Some people use pecan soap because it is gentle on the skin and does not contain harsh chemicals 💆♀️💆💆♂️ However, it’s important to note that pecan soap can be harmful if eaten, so it should be kept out of reac
