Back in those days I always loved especially those treasure chests & shiny coins in them. Little I knew that in the future the entire sets themselves will be looking like treasures!
Those huge baseplates for castles and such may not have had much reusability but I still love them. They made sets feel huge, complete, and busy. I suppose we still get printed baseplates nowadays, but the rocky ones were fun.
@MataNui2009 I wholeheartedly agree!
Please bring back the huge baseplates, LEGO.
If anyone from Lego is reading these just know I would be willing to pay way too much for any Space, Pirates or Castle revivals.
I had 6270 instead but remember wanting this set, which seemed so much superior. I think my mum would have said something similar to what I would say to my own kids today: “do you really need another island?”
Baseplates were amazing.
This set was on my wanted list for a veeery long time. Finally I bought this set (incl. instructions and box) about one year ago and it's amazing!
^ While others have said they most loved the coins, the baseplates, and the palm trees, I have to disagree with you all. I loved the monkey!
I remember really wanting a ship that I had seen at a family friends house and asking for it for Christmas. I got this set instead. Still a cool set though.
Awesome looking set. I would love to see what's on the other side of it. It seems that black grate can be raised and lowered. And as previously mentioned by everyone else, that's a cool baseplate!
I miss raised baseplates! Bring them back LEGO!
When I was a kid I remember having this,6274, and 6276
They were my favorite sets ever!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, Hours of playing time with this one, this was one of my favourite sets when i was a kid
Love all of the items, coins, palm trees, parrots, the monkey, the pirates, .....
I never got the “these base plates are hard to reuse” thing. I always loved them and rebuilt with them. Set 6416-1 Poolside Paradise arguably has the weirdest raised base plate, but I used it to create a Paradisa themed bed and breakfast. The inspiration completely came from the plate; where I guess it could work on a standard flat plate, I would never have been inspired to build it that way. http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/328221
This set, Rocky Island Refuge, was one of the few surprise gifts I got as a kid (The others off the top of my head were 6393-1 Big Rig Truck Stop and 6411-1 Sand Dollar Cafe) . My family “buys what the celebrant wants” for holidays; we always have lists for everything and everyone. Thinking this set was too expensive, I never asked for it but really wanted it. Next to Paradisa, Pirates was my favorite theme growing up. My father found this set at a great discount at a overstock-bargain basement-liquidation-type department store. They rarely had LEGO sets, but when they did, they were usually large sets close to 50% off if not more. Being a family that knows how to stretch a dollar, these sets always stand out in my memory. The others we got there were 6542-1 Launch & Load Seaport, 6541-1 Intercoastal Seaport, and 6543-1 Sail N’ Fly Marina; I guess seaport sets didn’t sell well, which is a shame, because these were all great sets (that we got for bargains). I think we got 6540-1 Pier Police and 4554-1 Metro Station there. Did folks not like the square pier base plate?
I feel like I’m rambling, that elder family member that gathers the young’uns To tell them memories that they don’t want to hear... These Random Sets of the Day have really been taking me back. I pity the folks around me in twenty years...
This is a great set. I do not miss the baseplates, but I did love the use of those in the sets. What I really miss, is the old palm tree elements. Fortunately I found a great technique with 1x1 cones to create the tree trunk.
@LuLego me as well - I did really really love Forbidden Island though. the rope bridge and trap door was my favourite part! But I definitely wanted this one as well. Frankly, I want the entire first run of the pirate theme.
Something about these first pirate waves make me incredible happy!
I could do something with those raised baseplate, hope Lego incorporates them to other themes.
Collecting Pirates from 1989 on and owning Eldorado Fortress, I found the later years of the theme not as inspiring as the premiere, just variations. Still, seeing this set outside that context, I have to admit that it's a great set.
Last set before my dark ages. I spent all my christmas money to buy this. Still display it proudly on my shelf!
I miss those big decorated, molded base plates.
