By in Portugal,

I love the name of this set....

But then I had to read Huw's article to make sure of the total number of pieces...

This type of set was very important when I came back from my dark ages, they've helped me a lot to fill my parts collection for relative cheap price!

I wonder how many bricks come in this. The name’s unclear.

Useful pieces in useful colors. Not strange pieces in strange Friends colors.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is pure Lego. Back in MY day Lego. When I was a kid Lego. No newfangled people and rocket engines. Just wholesome build anything bricks. :)

Wow it reminds me of the old days I agree with @iwybs and it sure is random

New fangled Green & Orange a bit outlandish... It was Red, White, Blue, Yellow, Black and Clear in my day! Green was strictly for thin baseplates.

back in MY day lego was just wood

I’ve built that model on the cover!

I wonder if it comes with 500 bricks

By in Turkey,

This wouldn't help me much since I like building various planes and vehicles and such...

Standard bricks that can be seen in other, more appealing sets-500

By in Norway,

I've never cared much about such brick packs, as they always contains too many large parts (I hardly ever use the 2-by-X bricks) and in too bright colors. I really wish they made packs of small parts (which I always need more of), like 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, 1x4 and 2x2 corner bricks, and the same plus 2x2, 2x3 and 2x4 plates/tiles (and then have a separate pack of larger pieces). Ideally they should have variants with different color groups, like black/white/grays, earth colors and primary/bright colors - that way it would be easier to buy bricks more useful to your actual needs.

By in Hungary,

9 pounds?! That was a serious steal. I remember buying several boxes of its later incarnation 6177, which, even though double the price, was still excellent.

Now this is a truly random set...

White and black basic bricks are so hard to come by in bulk these days that it's hard to resist getting cupfuls of them when they show up on the PAB wall. The vast majority of what I have come from either parting out old sets, or the PAB wall.

Red, green, blue, yellow and orange are still fairly common in bulk. I picked up the 325-piece 5529 for just 3 cents per brick, but it's just those five and some lime bricks. Now that I have a modest supply of these and Friends-colored bricks, I need to hunt for white, black, greys, clears, browns and tans.

@cluening - Interesting article! Thanks for sharing :D

Personally, I... never really had an interest in the basic bricks. I had one of the Freestyle buckets as a kid - and even those, it must be admitted, had several specialised parts like fences and flowers and animal heads - and if that had been all Lego produced, they would have lost me before I turned ten. It was all the more interesting sets - the parts and minifigures, and the stories that gave them context - which, when I learned about them, held my interest for so many years after that.

But then, having different perspectives on things like that is what makes the Lego community so interesting! ^^
