Smith Thompson
Smith Thompson (1768-1843) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1823 after a nomination from President James Monroe. He served until his death on December 18, 1843. Prior to joining the court, Thompson was the United States Secretary of the Navy.[1]
Thompson was the only justice nominated to the Supreme Court by President Monroe. He served during The Marshall Court and The Taney Court.[2]
Education
Thompson received his undergraduate degree from the College of New Jersey in 1788. He received his legal education by reading law.[1]

Supreme Court of the United States
Thompson was nominated by President James Monroe on December 5, 1823. He was confirmed by the Senate on December 9, 1823, and received commission that same day. He served until his death on December 18, 1843.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Justice Samuel Nelson.
