G. Michael Harvey is a federal magistrate judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He was sworn in on February 13, 2015, upon the retirement of Magistrate John Facciola. His current term will expire on February 12, 2023.[1]
Education
Harvey earned his bachelor's degree, cum laude, from Duke University in 1989. He earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993, where he served as editor of the law review.[1]
Professional career
After he graduated from law school in 1993, Judge Harvey was an associate with Wiley, Rein, & Fielding in Washington D.C., until 1997. In 1997, he joined national courts section of the U.S. Department of Justice as a trial attorney. There, he litigated commercial cases before the United States Court of Federal Claims, the United States Court of International Trade, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In 1999, he joined the U.S. Attorney's office in Washington as counsel in the civil division. He transitioned to that same office's criminal division in 2003. Immediately prior to becoming a magistrate judge, he served for over seven years in the U.S. Attorney's national security section "where he prosecuted high-profile cases involving espionage, terrorism, export violations, alien smuggling, unauthorized disclosure of classified information, threats against high-ranking officials, and cybercrime."[1]
Judicial career
U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia
On February 13, 2015, Harvey was appointed as a federal magistrate judge to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in accordance with 28 U.S.C. Section 631 and governing regulations for the selection of magistrates.[1] He succeeded magistrate judge John Facciola. His current term will expire on February 12, 2023.[2]
