Edward D. Carni was a judge for the 4th Department of the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division. He assumed office in 2009. He left office on February 17, 2022.

Gov. David Paterson (D) designated Carni as a judge on the Fourth Department in January 2009.[1] He was reappointed to another five-year term on December 20, 2020.

Carni previously served on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Department, from December 2006 to 2009.[1] He ran unopposed for re-election to the supreme court in 2015.[2]

Education

Carni graduated with a B.A. in political science from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1982. He went on to receive his J.D. from Whittier College School of Law in 1985.[1]

Career

Carni began his legal career in 1985, working for the Onondaga County Department of Social Services Legal Division. In 1986, he began working as a private practice lawyer, a job he held until 2001. During this time, he also served as judge of the Syracuse City Court. He was appointed to this position in August of 1995 and was elected the following November. On May 15, 2001, he was nominated to the State Supreme Court by Governor Pataki. He was confirmed by the Senate on June 20, 2001, and left the Syracuse City Court to assume his position as supreme court justice for Oneida County, 5th Judicial District. He was elected to the court in November of 2001 as the supreme court justice for Onondaga County, 5th Judicial District. He joined the appellate division in December of 2006.[1]

Carni was elected without opposition to the Supreme Court 5th Judicial District in 2015. New York's general judicial election was held on November 3, 2015. The filing deadline for candidates was August 16, 2015.[2]
