Charles Schwartz was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He joined the court in 1976 after being nominated by President Gerald Ford.[1] Judge Schwartz retired in 2001 and passed away peacefully on November 3, 2012, at the age of 90.[2]

Early life and education

A native of Louisiana, Schwartz graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans with his bachelor's degree in 1943 and with his J.D. degree in 1947.[1]

Military service

Schwartz served in the United States Army on Active Duty as a Second Lieutenant from 1943 to 1945 and had nineteen years of service as a Reservist Major from 1946 to 1965.[1]

Professional career

Schwartz spent his legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Louisiana from 1947 to 1976. He also served as a part-time district counsel for the Gulf Coast District of the U.S. Maritime Administration from 1953 to 1962.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Eastern District of Louisiana

Schwartz was nominated by President Gerald Ford on March 23, 1976, to a seat vacated by Judge Herbert Christenberry as Christenberry died while in Judicial Service[3] Schawartz was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 6, 1976, on a Senate vote and received commission on May 7, 1976. Schwartz assumed senior status on February 28, 1991.[1] Schwartz was succeeded in this position by Judge Edith Clement.
