  1. Sykofant
    by Sykofant
Between Air and Water Between Air and Water
On the Norwegians' website we first learn that "The word sycophant stems from the ancient Greek term for someone who spreads gossip or seeks to maximize personal gains at the expense of others." and then that they strive "to explore musical influences, without being limited by genre affiliations or compromises".We're also given a good dozen of these influences, old and new (from Floyd to Mastodon).
Some of these I here more clearly than others, but yeah, a fine, versatile debut album!
  2. They Are the Shield
    by Toby Driver
Scaffold of Digital Snow Scaffold of Digital Snow
This is the remixed re-release of Kayo Dot's main man Toby Driver's 2018 album. Beautiful sophisticated chamber art-rock featuring violin duet String Noise and jazz-informed drumming by Brian Chase.
I did miss the album in 2018 but thanks to the re-release not in 2024 :-)
  3. Radio Sputnik (DiN7)
    by ARC
    Arc Angel Arc Angel
As the DiN label is celebrating a quarter century existence, I had to toss in a few quid to say thank you. This is a live recording by label founder Ian Boddy and Mark Shreeve pre-dating the label's birth from 1998.

I chose "the sequencer track to end all sequencer tracks" (hilarious) as a favorite but they're all good :-)
  4. Solastalgia
    by Erik Wøllo
    Shoshin Voyage Shoshin Voyage
Erik Wøllo has been on my radar for a while but for whatever reason this is the first album by this prolific Norwegian artist to enter my collection. Strange...

However, this is a double album offering beautiful electronic, sometimes ambient pieces that have a very soothing effect on my ears and the space between them (although Erik is addressing some poetry grave topics, as the liner notes say).
  5. Under the Shadow of a Foreign Sun
    by Piah Mater
As Islands Sink As Islands Sink
Found this gem of a prog metal and more album from Brazil via recommendation of Drowning Steps Caio Claro. Thanks a lot, Caio!

Think early Opeth, but add a guesting string section or an occasional sax or a flute and you'll get a really rich mixture. Great songs and variability!
  6. Yesterdaze
    by Jesper Munk
    Bearing Gifts Bearing Gifts
About 20 or so years ago, one of the specialties of the Glitterhouse label were albums with many sad songs delivered by exhausted voices mainly from the singer/songwriter/Americana realm. I used to love that stuff.

Yesterdaze reminds me ot those dear albums, only that it offers a more "urban" sound, Sometimes, Jesper's blues roots shine through, but this has more a post-indie-sth than a traditional feel...
  7. An Unquiet Mind
    by Half Deaf Clatch
The Dying Of The Light The Dying Of The Light
His regular albums are must-haves for me, as most of his side projects, too. Indie blues with a constant high quality.
  8. Deerand
    by QUARTET DIMINISHED
    Deerand Deerand
Quartet enhanced, indeed. The Iranian quartet has been joined by Tony Levin and Markus Reuter when recording this album in late 2022.
Hats off, again and again, to MoonJune Records' Leonardo Pavlovic for making these kinds of things happen!!
Progressive fusion, the term really fits here.

And, of course, in these strange times: Stay safe, everyone in the whole region! Might your leaders (all sides included) finally come to their senses!
  9. Wheels Within Wheels
    by Meer
This album keeps gathering so much praise that I took the opportunity of this Bandcamp Fridays Karisma Records' discount and added it to my collection.

I had been hesitating, because it seemed to be to poppy/catchy to be added to my "prog folder". In retrospect I often find such albums to be later favorites ;-)

Lucky Norway with its incredible prog (or music in general) scene!
  10. Steady
    by Wryn
  11. Flight b741
by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
    Le Risque Le Risque
I have barely scratched the surface of the absurdly large KG&tLW catalogue, but every time I checked in on them I enjoyed my stay ;-)

So, this, their latest studio offering, is their "fun album", some kind of glam-rocky cosmic Americana stuff that splendidly passes the afternoon in the autumn sun. Big fun, indeed!
  12. Queen Of The Planet Wow! (EP)
by Andy Partridge & Chris Braide
Queen Of The Planet Wow! Queen Of The Planet Wow!
Songwriter/producer Chris Braide has been quite successful in the world of more commercial music - and thus was not known to me before ;-))
But thanks to him, we get new music with a heavy dose of Andy Partridge involvement, which is a blessing, as the Ex-XTC mastermind is more or less in musical retirement. Hooray!

Great songs and a clear recommendation for XTC fans (especially, if Nonesuch is their fav. album, as it's mine)!
  13. Here Comes the Sun
    by Klone
Gone Up in Flames Gone Up in Flames
Their new album is about to be released soon, but instead of pre-ordering, I decided, to work my way backward into their catalogue.
Alternative rock from France, sometimes leaning towards the proggy side, sometimes a little metal. Great voice, arrangements, songs...
  14. Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre EARLY, Morrison, CO (9/9/24)
by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
As mentioned buying their latest studio offering, Flight b741, I am merely a passing visitor in the vast land of the Gizzard Lizard. But every trip there left me in awe, so I decided to check out one of these - again numerous - live recordings. And btw, what a great service for fans, friends and passers-by to make their live shows available so quickly!

I chose the Red Rocks show for the simple reason that it's a venue I've seen before (if only on disc...) ;-)
  15. Early ideas from Down the Dolce Vita

  16. Bringing It Down to the Bass
    by Tony Levin
    Bungie Bass Bungie Bass
His first solo album in 17 years, but, of course, the incredible Tony L. has been anything but idle in the meantime - never was, actually. The list of important recordings to which he significantly contributed is nothing but astonishing!
As others wrote before, this is a self-served tribute to vast parts of his career. Sonically rich and diverse, fantastic playing by everyone (and there's a lot of awe inspiring guests here), humour, barbershop musings... Wonderful! Thank you very much, Tony!
  17. Restoration (EP)
    by HAKEN
    Crystallised Crystallised
Last Sunday during their "An Evening of Haken Music" tour, the mighty Haken ended their first set with an impeccable rendition of the epic Crystallised. That was a welcome reminder, that this 2015 EP (34 minutes playing time!) wasn't in my collection, yet (neither physical nor digital). Gladly fixed now :-)

Word class progressive metal with more than one nod to (among others) Gentle Giant...
  18. Kiss That Frog (Funky Frog)
    by Peter Gabriel

  19. Flotando en el vacio
    by Beledo
Flotando en el vacio Flotando en el vacio
This Bandcamp Friday came announcing 3 new albums by the incredible MoonJune Records. They are all very welcome but not to overload myself with too much new music I have to get them step by step, starting with this "flamenco fusion" album by Uruguyan guitar master Beledo and this impresive band. The 3 precursor songs sound very promising!
  20. Africa Yontii
    by Tidiane Thiam
    Too Too
Well, I'm aware that "hypnotic guitar lines" might come over as a cliché when describing Western African music, but it's still the best way to describe what I hear. Spellbinding instrumental music, pondering on heavy matters, as the line notes say, but still very enjoyable to listen to!
