The approach reflects a real-word scenario, encountered in modern media/monitoring organizations, where semi-automated indexing/documentation is deployed, which could be facilitated by the proposed language detection preprocessing. Multilingual audio recordings of specific radio streams are formed into a small dataset, which is used for the adaptive classification experiments, without seeking—at this step—for a generic language recognition model. This paper investigates the applicability of machine-driven Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) towa... more This paper investigates the applicability of machine-driven Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) towards the augmentation of theatrical performances and interactions (e.g. controlling stage color /light, stimulating active audience engagement, actors' interactive training, etc.). For the needs of the classification experiments, the Acted Emotional Speech Dynamic Database (AESDD) is developed, containing spoken utterances by 5 actors in 5 emotions. Several audio features and various classification techniques are implemented and evaluated, based on their performance with the AESDD, while also comparing to the well-known SAVEE database. The trained classifier is integrated in a novel application that performs live SER, fitting the needs of actors training, while simultaneously augmenting the AESDD repository.

Most researchers in this field usually annotate audio content by hand and for their individual requirements. This practice resulted in the absence of solid datasets and consequently research conducted by different researchers on the same topic cannot be effectively pulled together and elaborated on. A collaborative audio annotation platform is proposed for both scientific and application oriented audio-semantic tasks. Innovation points include easy operation and interoperability, on the y annotation while playing audio content online, efficient collaboration with feature engines and machine learning algorithms, enhanced interaction and personalization via state of the art Web 2.0 /3.0 services.

The current paper focuses on the investigation of wavelet approaches for joint time, frequency an... more The current paper focuses on the investigation of wavelet approaches for joint time, frequency and cepstral audio feature extraction. Wavelets have been thoroughly studied over the last decades as an alternative signal analysis approach. Wavelet-features have also been successfully implemented in a variety of pattern recognition applications, including audio semantics. Recently, wavelet-adapted mel-frequency cepstral coefficients have been proposed as applicable features in speech recognition and general audio classification, incorporating perceptual attributes. In this context, various wavelet configuration-schemes are examined for wavelet-cepstral audio features extraction. Additional wavelet parameters are utilized in the formation of wavelet-feature-vectors and evaluated in terms of salient feature ranking. Comparisons with classical time-frequency and cepstral audio features are conducted in typical audio-semantics scenarios.

Decisions over audiovisual encoding are related to the perceived quality of experience (QoE), but also to the physical attributes of initial material (i.e. resolution, color range, motion activity, audio dynamic range, bandwidth, etc.). Recent research showed that such decisions can be really crucial during the production of audiovisual e-learning material, where poor encoding may lead to unaccepted QoE or even to the creation of negative emotional response. On the other hand, exaggerated high quality encoding may create increased bandwidth demands that are associated with annoying delays and irregular playback flow, resulting again in QoE degradation with similar emotional repulsion. Thus, there has to be a careful treatment with proper encoding balance during the production of both the networked distance learning and stand-alone audiovisual mediated resources. Such machine creativity strategies are investigated in the current work with the utilization of applicable audiovisual features, QoE metrics and emotional measures. The current work is part of a broader research, aiming at implementing intelligent models for optimal audiovisual production and encoding configuration, with respect to the source content attributes, the requested quality of experience (and learning) and the related emotional properties.

The move to a networked media environment presents a range of challenges for journalistic roles, ... more The move to a networked media environment presents a range of challenges for journalistic roles, norms and daily practices. This article employs actor network theory to investigate how different actors negotiate and ultimately shape the manner in which the internet and related digital technologies are embedded in the newsroom. Findings suggest that professional culture – articulated in skills, ideas and practices – acts as a network that weakens the potential impact of technology towards innovation and audience-oriented models of journalism. The results point to the conclusion that the internet and related tools are seen as empowering journalists to do their (traditional) jobs better instead of moving on to the next stage built around a stronger commitment to capitalize on the growing sociotechnical potential.
