Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Joel Simeone

Full Control

Cougars strike early and often and keep a clean sheet in 3-0 victory over Sonoma State to improve to 2-0 on season.

ARCATA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific made it two-for-two on their road trip to the far north of California, walking away with a 3-0 shutout of Sonoma State in a game played at Cal Poly Humboldt.  Avery Guiel had a goal and an assist to continue her hot start to the season.

How It Happened:  The offense struck on practically their first foray forward of the afternoon.  After the Seawolves played a goal kick short, a high press forced the keeper into a giveaway at the top left corner of the box, kicking the ball right to Avery Guiel, whose one-timer right footed shot bounced past the keeper and into the lower right corner of the net just 1:43 into the contest, giving the Cougars a quick 1-0 lead for the second straight game.

While the Cougars did not add to their lead on the scoreboard over the ensuing minutes, they continued to control the game in other ways, registering the first eight shots of the game, including seven on target over the first 17 minutes of the game.  In the 25th minute, Maddie Williams was forced into her first save of the day, denying a shot towards the right post from about 12 yards out.  Azusa Pacific nearly doubled their advantage off a corner kick in the 34th minute, but Jackie Maze had her shot saved off the line by the Seawolves' defense.

Five minutes into the second half, the Cougars would finally capitalize on all the pressure they had been generating up top.  Guiel got a pass up the left wing, drove around the fullback, and lay a pass along the ground toward the top of the six-yard box.  The ball found its way to Maze, who beat the keeper along the ground to collect her first goal of the year and double the lead.  In the 81st minute, the exclamation point was placed on the game when Julia Galdamez ran onto a deflected throw-in, dribbled to about the penalty spot, and buried a shot in the bottom left corner to provide a 3-0 margin.

By the Numbers:  Azusa Pacific outshot Sonoma State for the game 19-9, including a 12-3 edge in shots on goal.  Aubrey Dunaway put all four of her shots on target on the offensive end, while Williams made three saves before giving way to Alexia Muniz, who played the final seven minutes of the game to help secure the shutout.  Azusa Pacific beat the Seawolves for the second-straight year, winning last year's meeting at Sonoma State by a 6-3 score.  The Cougars take the lead in the all-time series with the victory, 5-4.  All five wins have come at a different location, as the Cougars have won all three neutral-site meetings between the two schools.

Up Next:  Azusa Pacific (2-0) come home for its next three contests, starting with a Wednesday evening clash against Cal State San Marcos, who reached the NCAA Tournament last season.  Kickoff at the Cougar Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
