Beware of Those bearing Gifts

Summary:

Inspired by Cassandra, from Greek mythology, Pandora Rosier is a young witch gifted with The Sight but cursed by others' lack of faith in her visions.

After her father, the French Minister for Magic is impeached from power for his extremist actions, leading to a rebellion run by his eldest daughter Esmée, the family moves to England to aid the Dark Lord in his ascension.

Pandora and her twin brother Evan start at Hogwarts in fifth year and she quickly forms an attachment with childhood friend Regulus whose older brother has recently fled home, similarly to her sister.

As she and Regulus fall deeper into their parents' war, they form their own unique values and approach to the fight. Till Pandora can no longer ignore what she sees and is forced to make an irreversible choice...

Notes:

This first chapter is a series of letters between Andromeda and Esmée Rosier, Pandora's older sister in 1976, shortly before the Rosier's move to Britain.

I am not originally British, so if there are any words or sentences that seem weird, don't be afraid to let me know in the comments!

My Tumblr: @pomegranateroot15 I'll be posting updates and things for this fic and anything of pertinence to the Marauders fandom.

Chapter 1: Letters

Chapter Text

Andromeda,

I hope this letter finds you and your family in good spirits. I've missed you immensely at the recent Black gatherings I've attended.

As you've probably heard, my father has been ousted from office, which is excellent news. Unfortunately, he’s become aware of my involvement in the movement, and I fear it won’t be much longer before I’m mise à la porte .

I’m particularly worried about Pandora and Evan. I’m not quite sure what our parents have been saying to them, but they’ve been avoiding me like the plague. I can handle my parents’ disapproval, but it's altogether worse coming from the twins.

At the moment, I’m uncertain where I’ll end up. I’m not particularly hopeful about finding work in this country. The Ministère is in a state of disarray, and although I’d love to contribute to a solution, my surname continues to be a stumbling block. (Perhaps I should focus on finding a husband instead?) I can’t help but envy your complete disassociation from the Black name.

All this to say, once I’m inevitably turned out, I plan to head to another country, so we may see each other sooner than I’d imagined… I’ve always had an interest in Britain.

Bises,

Esmée Rosier

  Esmée,

I was delighted to receive your letter! I showed it to Ted straight away, and he was pleased to know I had at least one decent family member. You simply must come to stay with us! I’ve been working part-time at an apothecary in Diagon Alley (doing my best to avoid the Ministry and our rather charming family) but most of my days are taken up with Nymphadora, who has just turned three!

If I may offer some advice, don’t wait for the formal kicking out. If your parents are anything like mine (which they are), they’d also prefer to steer clear of another scandal. Just pack your things and come stay in our spare room for as long as you’d like. Ted would be thrilled to meet you, as would Nymphadora, and I can help you look for work.

If you need anything at all—money, quills, parchment, or help escaping your parents’ house—please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’ve been in your position before, and I understand how challenging it can be, especially when it comes to leaving your siblings behind. With my sisters, it seems like a lost cause, but perhaps the twins will see you go and reconsider their views. I wouldn’t get my hopes up too much, though, if I were you.

I miss you terribly, dear cousin, and I sincerely hope to see you soon.

Andromeda Tonks

P.S. I completely understand what you mean about the surnames… it was one of the many reasons I married Ted so quickly!

Andy
