Chapter 1: And now I just sit in silence

Dan stared blankly at the half done page in his sketchbook, unsure what to doodle next; he was currently sat outside on a bench, near the bus stop waiting for a bus to come through and finally take him home; the traffic was always terrible as it approached rush hour and it can sometimes take an ungodly amount of time for a bus to arrive, so here he was, sat with his sketchbook open and his headphones playing a random emo playlist he found on Spotify to pass the time.

He was soon snapped out of his train of thought when he suddenly felt eyes all around him, he briefly looked up to see his twin sister, Amy, alongside two popular girls he didn't know the names of, staring at him with a clear look of smugness on her face, she said something to him that he couldn’t hear, but by the time he'd paused his music to listen in to what she was saying to him, she'd already stopped talking.

God, he hated it when that happened...

"Did you even hear what I said??" She says, a little peeved that her brother wasn't instantly giving her the reaction she wanted. "I asked if you were alright..."

he said it in a slightly annoying tone, as if she was talking to a toddler, before giving side glances to her friends, snickering slightly before turning to her friends.

"Stop it, I'm gonna ask them..."

Dan just sat there in silence, knowing exactly how this will go; he couldn’t wrap his head around why Amy found it funny to treat him like a toddler, especially since they were literally the same age.

"How does it feel to have no friends...??"

Dan stared at her for a couple more seconds with a slightly annoyed expression, barely ignoring the laughter from Amy's friends that made them sound like seagulls before finally answering.

"It's fine, I guess...besides, I do have a few..." He replied, which was true; he did have a small group of friends (James, Justin and Squid) but he was not really interested on becoming popular like his sister.

"Oh really...?" She replied, with zero hesitation whatsoever. "Because last time I checked, you were all alone during break today. Face it Danny boy, nobody here likes you and they never will; besides, who could ever love a loner with a scarred face..."

He tried to retaliate with something but no words came out, leaving him just sat there looking dumbfounded and upset, she had hit a weak spot for him; the scar over his left eye came as a result of a previous fight with his father a year or two ago and he hated how it made him look, it made him look asymmetrical and was a reminder of how his father treats him behind closed doors; that combined with gender dysphoria was a match made in the darkest pit in hell, threatening to swallow him whole...

Amy and her friends exchanged entertained looks between themselves, satisfied that they were easily getting under his skin.

"Aww, are you gonna cry...??" One of the girls teased, in a sickly-sweet mocking tone.

"Look, just leave me alone, okay..." He murmured, getting slightly irritated now; it was so quiet that it was almost inaudible.

"What did you say...??"

"I said LEAVE. ME. ALONE." He near blurted out, not even realising that he was doing it. It was then he'd noticed a bus had finally arrived and he took it as his cue to leave, grabbing his sketchbook and bag and heading on to board the bus, leaving the three girls just standing there.

Before he boarded the bus, he very faintly heard Amy mutter something under her breath...

"Freak..."

The second Dan got home, he immediately rushed upstairs to his room, not bothering to unpack his backpack, before shutting the door behind him and sinking to the floor, sat down on the floor with his back to the door as his vision started to blur slightly.

"No no no don't cry don't cry don't cry-" He tried to tell himself, but he just couldn't, leaving him sobbing on his bedroom floor; he just couldn't understand why everyone hated him so much, it almost felt like he had been cursed in one way or another.

After ten or so minutes, he eventually stopped crying, leaving him feeling emotionally drained; he walked over to his bed, flopping down face first onto it; he still had his headphones on so he picked up his phone, skipping forward to the next song on the playlist.

He then proceeded to spend the next two hours in a bit of a daze, laid down flat on his bed listening to music.

Safe to say he was not looking forward to dinner later...
