A fed up fan

Summary:

After watching the show and reading the books a fan makes a heartfelt wish. To save Sookie from herself.

Work Text:

I throw the book across the room enraged by the ending, “How could they? The show ended terribly, and the last book made no sense. Claude working with Newlin? It didn’t even read like the same author. Also, why wasn’t Sookie given the option to grow as an individual. She kept thinking of herself as human instead of embracing her dual heritage. This story had so much potential. Just ruined.” I look at the book sitting beside the wall I had thrown it at, “If only that theory from Supernatural was true. That with each story written a new universe is born.” I sigh, “I would have helped her realize her true potential and shown her the truth of those around her. Eric wasn’t perfect, in either version but he truly loved her and accepted all that she was. He never belittled her or talked down to her. But then again she never gave him the chance to.” I clean up my living room and go to bed. “She deserved so much better than a standard human or Sam Merlotte. It was like the entire story was all for nothing.” I doze off thinking about the story and thinking that if she was real, I could show her the truth.

I woke around four a.m. to the sound of someone whispering in my ear, “umm, excuse me miss. Can you tell me where I am?” I groan and open my eyes to, “who the fuck are you? And why are you in my house?” I blurt out when I see a white, blonde woman in my room. Her eyes start to water, and she stutters out, “I’m Sookie, Sookie Stackhouse and I don’t know how I got here. One minute I was getting ready for bed and the next I’m here in your house.” I stare at her for a moment with my sleep addled brain attempting to make sense of what she’s saying. After a few moments my brain finally registers what she’s saying, “Are you fucking kidding me? Get out of my house before I call the cops. Sookie Stackhouse is a character.” I watch as she turns red in the face, clenching her teeth, “I am not a character. I am a real person. Why would you say that?” I stop for a moment taking her in for a moment and then project a thought at her, ‘if you’re really Sookie Stackhouse can you hear me and what color am I thinking of.’ I’m thinking of lilac it’s one of my favorites. “Yes, I can hear you and your thinking of the color lilac.” I’m floored and I jump out of my bed and grab her arms. “You’re really here, oh my god, have you met your first vampire yet?” I watch as her face becomes unnerved, and she nods slightly. I step back running my fingers through my hair and grab her hand “Come with me. I have to show you something.”

Pulling her into the living room I grab out the dvd collection of true blood and some of the SVM books and show them to her. “This is why I said you are a character. You…I… I have read and watched your story unfold. These are two versions of your story. Of course, there are fanfictions, but these are completed and thought-out versions. Well maybe not too thought out. I just finished the books last night and well the ending sucks for you and everyone involved. I think last night when I made an offhanded wish about showing you the truth well, I somehow brought you to my world.” She sucks in her breath and looks around trying to decipher what I’m telling her. “So, this isn’t my world?” I shake my head no, “It’s not even your universe. My world, as far as I know, doesn’t have vampires or any other supernatural creature. Don’t get me wrong we have our stories but as far as I can tell that’s just what they are.” She nods, “And these stories that I’m in, you say they end badly.” I stop and think for a moment, “In my opinion you settle and give up on the greatest love of your life due to fear, being misinformed, and being manipulated. I hated that for the show you somehow ended up with a regular, schmegular, human. And the books,” I scoff and roll my eyes, “You settle for Sam Merlotte, don’t get me wrong, he’s a nice enough fellow but I always thought that he was controlling and manipulative to you. And you sort of got with him out of revenge for what happened between you and your former husband.” I pause for a moment, “I think you should read and watch both versions and maybe when you go back home you can figure out which version, you’re in. But you have to realize that if the Supernatural theory is right any written and complete story can become its own universe. And you have so many fans in this world and there have been thousands written. Some say you’re a part of a prophecy, others you end up in a polyamorous relationship with your former husband and his maker, others you are turned into a vampire and live a happily ever after with your husband. But these are the bases for most of the stories and all of them, for the most part, stay true to how you end up involved in the vampire world.” She nods taking in everything that I’m telling her, “Okay, I’ll read the books and watch the show. Am I staying here with you?” I smile at her, “Well I’m not going to put you out on the street and you’re lucky I’m still in the middle of my vacation at the moment I got another week and half before I have to go back so you can just come out with me. I’ll show you my world and maybe you can tell me if there are any supes around.”

And that’s what we did for the rest of my vacation she watched the show first and was annoyed with the actress that they chose to portray her, saying “She looks nothing like me. She’s too thin and her eyes are brown instead of blue. And while I think she’s lovely she doesn’t have the true characteristics of me.” I nodded in agreement. By the end of the series, she was ranting about how stupid her character was, I nod understanding her frustration. She finally got to the books and was even more incensed with the way things ended. “What the hell. It’s like the author hated us by the end. The way she wrote Eric and I in the last three books made no sense. It didn’t even sound like the same author. Why did she do this?” I shrug and tell her that “Apparently she was tired of writing about you. She felt that she needed to end your story to continue writing her verse.” She looked at me in confusion and I explained that though her series ended the author still told stories that involved that world, just not her or Eric anymore.

In between the reading and tv show binging we went out and I found out that my world had tons of supes in it. They were literally everywhere and that apparently the company I worked for was owned by a vampire. Who’d have thought that our worlds would be so similar. Of course, now that I know this, I am a little bit more on edge, but I go about my day as I always did.

It was the night before I had to return to work and somehow, I knew she would be leaving that night. “Sookie, I just wanted to tell you that I have enjoyed my time with you, and I hope that you take what you’ve learned and use it to make your story better. I suggest you go to Eric as soon as possible. Maybe even talk to your gran about your grandfather.” She looks at me and smiles, “Why does it sound like your saying goodbye.” I smile at her gently, “It’s, because I feel that you will be returning to your universe soon. I can feel it.” She smiles sadly and hugs me, “Thank you, thank you for your wish and for helping me see how stupid and immature I would have behaved. I’m going after my own happily ever after and I won’t let anyone else interfere.”

I release her and watch as she fades away, going back to her world.

“Goodbye Sookie Stackhouse.”

I go to bed to get ready for the work day tomorrow. I can only wonder what adventures await me now that I know some of the secrets of my own universe.
