Chapter 1: Meeting Doc Pretty
Chapter Text
Ana (đ¶) barged in the hospital doors, frantically looking around as she tried to findâ
Aki.
She rushed to her daughter, whose eyes were a bit red, as if she just stopped crying. Her sister, Sienna (đ°), was right beside Aki, obviously trying to divert her daughter's attention from her broken arm.
"Sie! Anung nangyari?" Ana rushed out as soon as she spotted them.
"Mommy!" Aki exclaimed upon seeing Ana, showing her the lollipop a doctor gave her a while ago. "Look oh, strawberry!"
Ana fought the instinct to tell her daughter "no sweets," but she knew that should be the least of her priorities.
"Nasa park kami, Ate, tapos humingi ng tubig. Edi, kinuha ko sa bag. Bigla ba naman tumakbo tapos ayun natisod sa bato nauna yung braso buti na lang nasangga niya braso niya. Ay nako, Ate, yung puso koâ"
"Okay, stop!" Ana cut her younger sister off, knowing Sienna's on a spiral and could go on and on about itâthat surely wouldn't help her. "Bakit walang nag-che-check sa kanya?"Â
"Hindi, chine-check lang ni Doc yung X-Ray ni Aki. Pabalik na siguro 'yonâ"
"Doc Pretty!" Aki squealed, doing a bit of bouncing on the bed.
"âayan na siya. Ate, ang anak mo. Tingin ko for the girls 'yan. Gandang ganda ba naman kay Doc. Halos mabingi ako sa iyak niya kanina tas dumating lang 'yan si Doc... aba! Tumahan agadâ"
"Sienna, shut up," Ana shushed her sister, before the doctor and nurses with her could possibly hear them.Â
The minute Ana turned to greet the doctor... oh Lord.
"Hello again, Aki! D'you like the lollipop?" Doc Pretty (đš) asked, with a friendly smile on her face. She looked so youthful with her short hair. Her face seemed as if it was sculpted by the gods and her light makeup complemented her skin so well.
She was around the same height as Ana, though slightly taller. Her lean frame made her scrubs look as if it's draping on her but in a good way.Â
But it's her eyesâseeming so kindâthat captivated Ana the most.
Tama ka talaga, 'nak. Doc Pretty nga.
"Yes! I love strawberry po!" Aki said, putting the lollipop again in her mouth.
"That's great!" Doc Pretty turned to look at Anaâfuck. She smiled at Ana.
"Kayo po Mommy ni Aki?" Her voice.
"Yeahâyes, I am." Ana stuttered and she swore she heard Sienna snicker, making her want to smack her sister right on the head.
"Hi, Mrs. Alvarâ"
"Miss."
"Ah, sorry, Miss Alvarez. I'm Doctor Gael Avila, I'll be the one to treat Aki. As I've mentioned po kay Tita, we have to X-Ray Aki's arm first hereâwhich we already did. Bale, we saw a partial dislocation on her elbow here po, as you can see."Â
Doc Avila pointed a spot on the X-Ray Ana could at least recognize as her daughter's elbow but can't, for the life of her, identify which is normal and not.Â
"We already went ahead and gave her pain medications. Though, I'll have to place it back first then ica-cast po natin ang arm niya for three weeks to make sure it'll fully heal."
All Ana could do was nod.
"Okay po, bale realign ko po ngayon then saka po natin ilalagay yung cast..." Ana appreciated Doc Avila's calm voice, because truly, with everything the doctor said, she's close to panicking with how much her baby have to endure for the next weeks.
"Masakit ba yan, Doc?" Ana heard her sister ask worriedly from beside her.
"Ah... I'm gonna be honest, yes. But it'll be over but it'll be over before you know it, Aki, and andito naman sila Mommy and Tita with you," Doc Avila said, cheerfully to Aki.Â
Ana smiled at Doc Avila, appreciating her words. She finally sat beside Aki as she saw the nurses preparing some medical stuff beside Aki's bed.
"Aki, let's fix your elbow, okay?" Doc Avila talked to Aki, who was now realizing that something's about to happen to her.
"Mommy, I'scared," Aki snuggled at her.
"Aki's a big girl na kaya! Kaya yan ni Aki," Sienna cheered, but they were all watching Doc Avila touch Aki's arm.
When it was over, Aki was still sobbing, her good hand gripping Ana's shirt tightly.
"Aki...? Choose your color na dito sa cast! What's your favorite color?" Doc Avila smiled, running a hand up and down the child's heaving back.
"P-Pinkâ" Aki sobbed out before her eyes landed again on her injured arm, letting out again another round of cries.
"Te, hinawahan mo ng pagka-OA 'yan si Aki," Sienna joked, earning a glare from Ana and a smile from Doc Avila.
After a while, the cast was already on, Aki's arm bright pink as ever. The child was sniffing, still recovering from all the crying she did a while ago.
"Okay, all done!" Doc Avila discussed to Ana all the do's and don't's for Aki, giving the child another candy.
"So... will see you back here again in three weeks, okay?" Doc Avila was looking at Aki, who was slowly frowning at the doctor's words.
"No! See you tomorrow," Aki pouted, eyes going teary again. Sienna laughed out loud as well as Ana.
"Oh... ahâ" Doc Avila was obviously lost for words.
"You wanna go back here tomorrow, baby?" Ana asked, amused.
"Yes! Meet Doc Pretty po again," Aki pouted.
"Busy si Doc, Aki..." Aki whined.
It took a few tries before they finally managed to convince Aki to leave the hospital.
"Thank you so much, Doc Avila."
"You're welcome, Miss Alvarez and Aki! Please call me Gael na lang. Doc Avila is my Mom," Doc Gael said shyly. Sienna cleared her throat which didn't go unnoticed by Ana.
She's gonna deal with her sister when they get home.
"Okay. Then call me Ana na lang din." Ana smiled when Doc Gael nodded. "Thank you, Doc Gael! Say bye to Doc Gael na, baby," Ana said.
"Bye, Doc Pretty! See you tomorrow," Doc Gael laughed at Aki's farewell.
"See you, Aki! Take care of your arm, okay?" Aki's smile was so wide and before Ana could even hold Aki's hand, the child ran to Doc Gael and hugged her legs with her good arm.
"I'miss you," Aki said before running to hold her mother's arm. The adults just laughed, with Sienna whispering to Ana, "Bilis ma-attach ng anak mo, Te. Manang mana."
Â
Â
"Mommy... why do I have no Daddy?" Ana groaned.
It's too early in the morning for this. Too early. Her mind's not even that awake.
"Well, baby, kasi Mommy just wants you all for herself..."
"Okay." Aki shrugged, going quiet beside her. Ana finally opened her eyes to look at her seven year old, who's staring at their ceiling.
Too suspicious for her to let it go that easily.
"Let's eatâ"
"Friends ko sa school, they have Mommy and Daddy..." Aki said quietly.
Too early for this talk.
You can't evade this forever, Ana.
"Sabi ni Ta-Ta Sie, I don't have Daddy kasi wala ka jowa, Mommy." Aki finally faced her. Ana could see there was no hint of sadness in her daughter, just plain old curiosity.
Fuck you, Sienna.
"Oh... baby. Too early for your questions!" Ana deflected, kissing her daughter's cheek as she can't tickle her knowing it would cause her daughter to move her injured arm abruptly.
"Mommy! Let's find your jowa para we're family naâ"
"Baby, kahit walang Daddy, we're still a family, okay?" Ana said seriously. "Family isn't just Mommy and Daddy. You can have a family without a Daddy or a Mommy, okay? You have me, you have your Ta-Tas, Mami Liz, Paps!"
Aki stared at her as if processing her words. Aki's a smart child, a bit advanced for her age, so Ana knows Aki understands her.
"What if I want two mommies?" Aki asked suddenly.
Fudge.
"Why, ayaw mo na sa 'kin, baby?" Ana asked, pretending to pout.
"Nooooo! I said I want more mommies," Aki shouted.
"Ta-Ta Sie sabi po you want girl jowa daw," Aki said suddenly. "I'll help you look, Mommy."
"Do you even know what 'jowa' is?" Ana asked, outraged. Aki nodded eagerly.
"Yes! Jowa is pretty and you kiss like this," Aki closed her eyes and made kissing noises, making Ana laugh.
"No more Ta-Ta Sie time for you, okay? The things she's teaching you!"Â
"But I love Ta-Ta Sie," Aki pouted.
"You know what? Enough na, eat na tayo breakfast!"Â
Sienna, when I get my hands on you.
Â
Â
They were in an ice cream stand at the mall when Aki suddenly let go of her hand.
"Aki!" Ana gasped, turning to run after her daughter.
"Doc Pretty!" Aki squealed, crashing herself lightly to a woman's legs.
It was indeed Doc Gael that Aki saw. She was wearing casual clothes, a classic fit tee and trousersâmaking her look younger than when she's wearing a white coat.
She's a doctor and she looks that beautiful.Â
I thought med people are supposed to be stressed all the time? How can someone look that good? If I didn't know she was a doctor, I would have thought she walks down runways...
Doc Gael was looking around, probably wondering where Aki's companion was. Their eyes finally met, and Ana took that as her cue to get nearer.
"Hi, Miss Alvareâ"
"Ana, please." Ana interrupted.
"âHi, Ana. May nakawala ka ata na bata..." Ana chuckled, looking down at her child to see her smiling up so wide at Doc Gael.
"Yeah. Lagi na lang siya tumatakbo. Kaya nadadapa eh," Doc Gael smiled at her. "Aki, don't run away like that again, ha?" Ana continued, sternly, narrowing her eyes when her child just nodded at her with a smile still on her face.
"Yes, Mommy! Doc Pretty, may jowa ka na?" Ana prayed to all gods for the ground to swallow her whole.
Please. Just this once.
"Um..." Doc Gael looked at Ana, as if asking if she heard Aki right. Ana just mouthed sorry, embarrassment flooding her whole body.
No more Sienna time, talaga.
"Ah... no, I don't have," Doc Gael chuckled softly.Â
"Yey!" Aki suspiciously didn't comment anymore about that, to which Ana was thankful and nervous about at the same time. It's not like her child to just let things go that easily.Â
"Can you draw po sa cast ko? My Ta-Ta Mimi (đŒ) told me you can draw sa casts. Look oh! She drew a funny face with ribbons. Mommy draw half heart kanina, see? Can you make it a whole heart Doc Gael? Here's my pen..."
No, I didn't draw that heart. And yes, I have to talk about this to my child privately.
Doc Gael looked at her for approval and so Ana nodded with a small smile.
"Gael! Ano na?!" Someone familiar shouted from behind Doc Gael. They all turned to the voice and Ana couldn't believe what she's seeing.
Clair (đș). Her sister-in-law.
"Ta-Ta Cla!" Aki squealed, running towards Clair before Ana or Doc Gael could even stop her.
A runner. I swear, too much like herânope, too much, Ana!
Mari (đŒ), Ana's other sister, was currently nowhere in sight, so Clair's probably hanging out with friends.
Who, one of them, was Doc Gael.
"Aki, my sweet girl!" Clair greeted, hugging the child.Â
"Look, Doc Pretty drew heart!" Aki said, pointing at her cast that has now whole of a heart.
"Hala, careful ka diyan sa arms mo ah!"
"Yes po! Where's Ta-Ta Mimi?! You know Doc Pretty?" Aki asked, looking at Doc Gael.
"Isa isa lang! Ta-Ta Mimi's at home. I'm with... wait, ikaw si Doc Pretty?" Clair snorted, looking at Doc Gael.
"Makatawa ka, Cla?" It was the first time Ana heard Doc Gael speak outside being slightly formal, and it was making her stomach flutter.
"Kung ikwento ka ni Aki sa amin... ikaw lang pala si Doc Pretty," Clair continued, laughing as Doc Gael rolled her eyes at her.
"Kung ano-ano tinuturo mo sa pasyente mo, Ga," the red-haired woman, Masie (đŠ), if Ana remembers correctly, teased Doc Gael as well.Â
"Small world nga naman! Hi, Annie." Ana rolled her eyes at Cla's nickname for her, leaning for a kiss on the cheeks.
"Hi," Ana grumbled.
Clair was Mari's high school sweetheart that's why she's so close to the entire family. Quite the cliche love story everyone dreams to have. Despite the long distance relationship back in college, obviously they went through so much, they still managed to stay together.
"Kilala mo na si Gaelâay, Doc Pretty pala," Clair joked, earning a slight slap on the shoulder from Doc Gael. "Kakauwi lang niyan galing States last month, na-meet mo na agad."
"And I think you've met Masie before no?" Ana nodded when Clair pointed at the red-head who was obviously making faces with Aki. Masie waved at her.
"Gael, si Ana yung eldest nila Mari." Doc Gael smiled at her widely.
"Ah, that's why familiar yung name niyo back in the hospital. Nauna ko pa ma-meet sisters ni Mari before her," Doc Gael said, smiling charmingly at Ana.
Hindi naman ako nagkape kanina? Bakit ganito puso ko?
"Ta-Ta Cla, sabi ni Ta-Ta Sie, wala daw jowa si Mommy. May jowa ka ba?" Cla, Masie, and Doc Gael laughed at what Aki said.
"Aki!" Ana exclaimed, horrified. "Oh gosh, una na nga kami!"
"Sama kayo samin, patapos na rin kami, kakain na lang. Then hatid ko na kayoâ"
"Ay, Cla, wag naâ"
"Mommy, please, please!"
"Annie, nasa talyer pa sasakyan mo... at hindi ako makakapasok ng bahay 'pag nalaman ni Mari na nakita ko kayo tas 'di kita hinatid," Cla said sternly.
"Please, Mommy, hungry na ko oh." Aki looked at her with those pleading eyes.
"She's good," Doc Gael commented, looking pointedly at Aki.
Ang ganda mo.
"Ay, sinabi mo pa. Sige na nga," Ana sighed in defeat.
"Yey! I'll hold your hand, Doc Pretty!" Aki squealed, taking Doc Gael's hand and talking the doctor's ears off. Ana could only stare as the two walked ahead of them, Doc Gael listening attentively to Aki's stories and answering her questions patiently.
"Ganda ba ng view?" Ana held back a gasp in surprise. Cla was looking at her teasingly. "Ay nako, Annie, kung isa lang rin pala sa mga kaibigan ko makakatuluyan mo, approve ako diyan kay Gael. 'Yan ang nag imbento ng green flag, eh. 'Wag kang titingin diyan kay Masie, thoughâ"
"Ako na naman, Cla!" Masie whined.
"'Yan naman nagimbento ng red flagâ"
"Wow ha! Don't listen to her, Ana." Masie glared at Clair, who was laughing. "Besides, may girlfriend ako, duh."
"Imaginary girlfriend," Clair teased. Masie rolled her eyes. "Na ayaw ipakilala samin kasi baka daw ayawan siya."
"Nakakatakot kayo eh. Tapos andito na si Gael. Nakakatakot na nga yan sa call, paano pa 'pag in personâ"
"Bunso ka kasi namin!" Clair said, reaching over to pinch Masie's cheeks to which the woman just slapped away, making Ana laugh.
"Kahit si Sienna, ayaw magpakilala sayo ng jowa niya. Masyado ka daw nakakatakot," Ana added.Â
"Kung matatakot, hindi na dapat yon ine-entertain," Clair said certainly.
They all turned to look in front of them after they heard Aki laugh loudly. Ana was horrified at what she saw.
Aki's good arm was reaching out to Doc Gael, obviously wanting the woman to carry her.
"Akâ"
"Hayaan mo siya! Kaya naman ni Gael yan," Clair stopped Ana from calling her daughter.
"Mapayat si Gael pero kaya kami buhatin niyan," Masie laughed.
"Nakakahiya sobra," Ana groaned. "Alam mo ba unang tanong niya kay Gael kanina? Kung may jowa ba daw!"
Clair and Masie laughed out loud.
"Si Sienna na naman nagturo no?"
"Oo, sasabunutan ko na siya pag nagkita kami!"
"Siennaâbunso?" Masie asked. Both Clair and Ana nodded. "Oh yeah, checks out. Hindi ko masundan sinasabi non the first time I met her."Â
Clair and Masie continued conversing. Ana's eyes were focused on the view ahead of her. Doc Gael was carrying Aki effortlessly. Instead of talking animatedly, Aki has her head leaning on Gael's shoulder. Ana just knows the both of them were talking quietly.
That's a sight I'll never get tired ofâokay, masyado ka na nagiging delulu, Ana.
Â
Â
"Hi Doc Pretty! I'll take my cast off today na!" Aki greeted as soon as they reached Gael's office.
"Hi Aki, Ana!" Doc Gael smiled widely at them.Â
"Hi Doc Gael," Ana greeted back.
"Are you ready?" Doc Gael asked Aki.Â
"Yes po! Doc Pretty, nakapunta ka na po sa Enchanted Kingdom?" Aki asked as she sat comfortably on the chair Doc Gael made her sit on.
"Actually hindi pa... are you going?" Doc Gael smiled at Aki, gently touching her cast.
"Yes! Sama ka po sa min!" Aki invited.Â
"Oh, I don't thinkâ"
"Sabi ni Ta-Ta Cla, y'might say no, sabi po niya sabi niya daw po," Aki interrupted.
"It's okay if you don't want to, Doc. Kulit ni Aki," Ana said, embarrassed. Her heart still skips a beat every time Doc Gael suddenly turns to her.
"It's fine! Used to it naman. I also have nephews around Aki's age. Is it a family outing?" Doc Gael asked while attending to Aki's arm.
"Yes. I think you've met everyone there namanâoh well, except for Mari and our parents," Ana said.
"When is it?"Â
"This Saturdayâ"
"Please! Doc Pretty, minsan na nga lang humiling, ganyan pa ikaw," Aki pouted.
Both Doc Gael and Ana looked at Aki in surprise.Â
"Aki, gosh, the things you learn from your Titas!" Ana exclaimed. Doc Gael just laughed and shook her head.
"Cla definitely thought her that," Doc Gael chuckled.
She patted Aki's arm gently, stretching it a bit, doing some necessary tests. Then, she discussed after care and exercises to Ana.
"All done!" Doc Gael said cheerily.
"Sama ka na po, Doc Pretty! I'll be your tour guide!" Aki insisted, obviously not forgetting her agenda.
Before Doc Gael could say anything, her door slowly opened, revealing an older woman also wearing a coat.
"Hi, sorry to interrupt," The woman said. "Gael, can I borrow..." The woman gestured something hanging around her neck.
"Oh yeah, I have an extra hereâ"
"Hello po! You look like Doc Pretty!" Aki greeted. Doc Gael laughed and Ana laughed as well, though awkwardly. She couldn't really keep up with her child.
"Wow, Doc Pretty! She really is pretty, no?" The woman said, crouching down a bit to talk to Aki.Â
"Yeah, tapos she fixed my arm poâ"
"Pretty and amazing!" The woman exclaimed.
"Hay nako." Doc Gael was rolling her eyes, to which Ana found so adorable. "This is Doctor Abigail Avila, my Mom." Doc Gael introduced, handing over a stethoscope to her mother.
"This is Aki, my patient, and her mom, Ana." Ana held out a hand for Doc Avila to shake.Â
"Hello po," Ana greeted. Doc Avila shoot her a smile while shaking her hand, Ana obviously saw where Doc Gael got her smile from.
"You're Doc Pretty's Mommy po?" Doc Avila nodded her head and Ana was holding herself back from covering her child's mouth. She doesn't know what could come out of there.
"Pwede ko po ipaalam si Doc Pretty sumama po sa min sa Enchanted Kingdom? Please po! Iuuwi po namin siya safe at ako po mag-tour po sa kanyaâ" Ana finally held back Aki, trying to stop her from speaking by gently placing a hand on her cheek.
"Ohâ" Doc Avila looked amused and confused at the same time, looking at her daughter for answers.
"She's Cla's niece. Kapatid ni Mari si Ana," Doc Gael said, as if that would explain everything to Doc Avila.
"Oh! Those are definitely Cla's words." Ana wanted to laugh, she does agree it was too obvious Clair taught Aki to tell those words. "I miss Cla. Sabihin mo bisita ulit sila ni Maiâand..." Doc Avila turned to Aki. "If ayaw sumama ni Doc Pretty, just bribe her with some cake, she'll definitely go!" Doc Avila winked at Aki before bidding her goodbye.
"Doc Pretty! Mommy bakes the most delicious cake in the world!"Â
Â
Â
"I was promised a cake..." Doc Gael whispered to Ana as soon as the others walked ahead of them. Aki was with her grandparents in the meantime... as that was where the candy was.
"We didn't bring it kasi baka matunawâ"
"Oh, I was just joking, Ana!" Doc Gael exclaimed with a laugh.
"Nope, Doc, meron talagang cake. Aki insisted," Ana said, smiling at Doc Gael.
"Please just call me Gael? No Doc, wala naman tayo sa hospital," Gael pleaded, making Ana smile shyly.
"SorryâGael." She'll call her Gael if she'll always get that beautiful smile.
"Thank you! And, I can't wait to have a taste of the most delicious cake in the world!" Ana just laughed at Gael imitating Aki's expression.
"So... what's the agenda for today?" Gael asked, looking around.Â
"Well, go to as many rides as Aki wants. Which I think is all of them," Ana explained making Gael laugh.
"She's a really great child, you did well, Ana," Gael smiled at her.
Lord, help. I'm just a woman...
"Thank you," Ana said. "I'm surprised you haven't asked yet why Aki only has me. I mean, anyone would have already asked at this point."
"I'm not one to force anyone to tell their stories... Besides, she has your whole family oh. What more can a child ask for? Though I'm sorry too. Medyo alam ko na nangyari kasi kami ang receiver ng angry rants ni Cla," Gael smiled shyly, making Ana laugh.
"It's okay. I'm kinda relieved you know alreadyâlesser explaining, you know?" Ana said and Gael nodded.
"Doc Pretty! Go with me sa carousel!" Aki suddenly squealed. The girl pulled Gael with her, dragging her towards the direction of the carousel. The other adults obviously trusted Gael enoughâthe woman practically has kids for patients, Aki's in the best hands (apart from her family).
They walked around for a bit, trailing close to Aki and Gael as both tried the carousel, a few child-friendly rides, and some booths.
"Nagtatampo si Cla, 'di na daw siya favorite ni Aki," Mari suddenly said from beside her, as they sat on the bench, waiting for Aki and Gael to exit the ferris wheel.
"Hoy! Pero totoo. Dapat 'di na umuwi yang babaeng yan from States eh," Clair said.
"Lagi na lang si Doc Pretty bukang bibig. Mas nakilala ko pa si Doc Pretty kesa kay Gael eh," Mari commented.
"She's one of your friends, Cla?" Hilary, Ana's Mom, asked.
"Yes, Ma. Sobrang bait, sobrang green flag," Clair said cheekily. "Sabi ko nga po kung gusto ni Ana okay na okay sa kin eh."
Ana couldn't help but roll her eyes. Having Cla as her sister-in-law seems like having five overprotective brothers watching over her and Sienna all the time.
"Aba, okay na kay Cla, oh? Tapos gustong gusto pa ni Aki. Ano pa iniintay mo, 'nak?" William, their Dad, jested, making everyone laugh except for Ana.
"You're all so funny!" Ana said sarcastically.
"Nauna pa approvals bago ipa-approve, Te. Sana all," Sienna said.
"Anong sana all ka diyan? May 'di ka ba sinasabi?" Mari raised an eyebrow. Sienna protested, voice almost as loud as the speakers all over the place.
"Bahala kayo diyan, maglalakad lakad kami ng Papa niyo," their Mom said, dragging her husband to walk away from them.
"Mga kunwari pa ayaw pumunta dito, sila pala unang hihiwalay," Ana commented, watching over the general direction their parents are going to.
"Mommy, mommy, look! I have bunny cotton candy!" Aki squealed from afar, waving her cotton candy.
"Good luck sa sugar rush, sis," Mari said.
"Hey, I bought her one... is it okay? 'Di pa naman niya nakakain," Gael rushed out as soon as they were near the group.
"No, it's okay! Aki, just a bit lang ha?" Aki nodded, watching as her Mom opened the plastic.
"Musta, bro?" Cla asked Gael, making the latter roll her eyes.
"Maka-bro ka diyan, pa-cool ka na naman," Gael said, making Mari and Sienna laugh.
"Oo nga, Te Cla. Ang cringe. Sa mga high school ka pa talaga magpapa-influence," Sienna commented, pointing out how Cla always mimics her students' mannerisms.
"Bashers, bashers! Love, 'di ba cool naman ako?" Cla turned to Mari, who was looking st her in disgust.Â
"Umayos ka, iiwan kita dito," Mari snapped. Cla pouted, making Gael laugh loudly. The doctor was quick to snap a picture of Clair pouting, immediately sending it to their GC.
"Hoy! I-delete mo 'yan!" Clair exclaimed.
"It's my duty to keep Masie looped in," Gael said simply, laughing as she raised the phone out of Clair's reach, obviously towering over the woman.
"So Doc Gaelâ" Mari started.
"Gael na lang, please," Gael interrupted.
"Doc Prettyâ" Mari corrected teasingly.
"Ta-Ta Mimi, I only call her Doc Pretty!" Aki glared. Mari laughed, pinching her cheeks.Â
"Okay, Gael, stay ka na ba dito for good?" Mari asked.
"Ah yeah, staying here for good na. Will have to go back there from time to time, though," Gael said.
"Oh... pwede na..." Mari muttered, earning a snicker from Clair and Sienna but a glare from Ana.
"What was that?" Gael asked, the only one not catching what Mari said.
"Ah wala wala, sabi ko lang, maganda na rin dito ka. Miss na miss ka kaya nitong si Cla," Mari said, with Clair's smile turning into a scowl.
"Mahal, never ko sinabi 'yan!" Cla protested.
"Bro, 'di mo naman sinabi sakin," Gael teased.
"Kadiri ka!" Clair exclaimed.
"Everytime nagsho-shot yan nila ni Masie, ikaw lagi bukang bibig!" Mari laughed, making Gael laugh even harder.
"Aw, I missed you too, guys. You should have said so, I would have called more," Gael said half sincerely and teasingly.
"Bahala kayo, imbento lang yan," Clair said grumpily.
"Ta-Ta Cla, napindot si anger," Aki said offhandedly making everyone laugh out loud.
"Very good, Akiko!!! Apir!" Sienna exclaimed, raising her hand for a high five. Aki smiled widely and clapped her hand.
"Ikaw, Sie, marami ka pa atraso sakin. Kung ano ano tinuturo mo kay Aki," Ana said accusingly.Â
"Luh? Bakit ako? Si Ate Cla kaya?"Â
"Oh tama na, ako na naman!" Cla said indignantly.
"Ay, kayong dalawa. Basta, kung ano-ano tinuturo niyo kay Aki!" Ana declared, not able to think properly as she caught Gael looking at her with a smile on her face, listening to what she was saying.
How can I goddamn focus with those eyes?!
"Mommy doesn't want me asking people if meron silang jowa," Aki said while busy eating her candy.
Mari was the first one to laugh.
"Ay, 'yab, 'yun ba yung kinwento mo sa mall?" Mari asked, Clair nodded. "Tawang tawa ako doon!"
"Kasi, baby, sometimes people don't want anyone asking thatâ"
"Pero I only ask pretty ones lang naman for you, Mommy!" Aki said, thinking she was defending herself. "Kaya nga po si Doc Pretty lang inask ko eh!"
"Beh, bata pa yung pinagtanong mo talaga," Mari said, teasing her sister. Ana groaned, believing it was truly a lost cost when it comes to her daughter and her sisters.
"Anong sagot naman ni Doc Pretty?" Mari asked, turning over to Gael. The woman smiled shyly, running a hand through her hair.
"Wala."Â
Sienna fake clearing her throat, pretending to stumble over Ana.
"Ay sorry 'Te, nadala lang ng ubo," Sienna laughed.
"Wala palaâ" Mari was cut off by Gael's phone ringing. The woman answered it, and it was obviously a call of duty when her face suddenly changed.Â
"Sorry, I have to go. Patient needs me," Gael said apologetically, rushing away.Â
"Bye Aki! See you again!" Ana didn't even dare stop her daughter anymore from running to Gael. She just watched Aki hug Gael and return back to them with a pout.
"We're supposed to go to roller coasters pa!" Aki pouted.
"Hala, andito pa naman kami, Aki," Sienna said.
"Baby, Doc Pretty has to go save another kid's life, okay?" Ana said gently.
"Uy, biglang naging Doc Pretty tawag," Mari said, with Ana glaring at her again.
"Okay..." Aki muttered, spirits obviously still down.Â
"Tara, Aki! Roller coaster na tayo!" Clair said, trying to lift the child's spirits up. The three sisters joined Clair in cheering, attempting to make Aki lively again.
"Okay..." Aki muttered again, taking Clair's hand.Â
"Ay, I feel the love, Aki," Sienna said, dragging her feet to follow Aki and Clair.
Chapter 2: Hypothetical Question
Chapter Text
"Sav (đ±), you're my last resortâ"
"Wow ha! âDi ako nagpapanggap na busy pero kung nagpapanggap ako, knowing Iâm the last resort wonât make me give in and say yes!â Savannah, Ana's best friend, jokingly snapped at her.Â
Ana groaned, mind running hundred miles per hour on how to fix this.
"Wala ba talaga kahit sino?" Sav asked, now softer, probably understanding the gravity of the situation.
Ana's job is too ideal for herâshe works from home majority of the time. She has to go to office for a bit, but when she does, someone is always available.
Usually, her onsite trip is scheduled that's why they're always sure someone can look after Aki. But this onsite trip was so sudden, and now, everyone's busy.
"Wala talaga. Mari and Cla are working, Sie's at school, then Ma and Pops went on a vacation," Ana said, stressed. Just when Ana thought she was about to cry out of frustration, she received a notification of Cla messaging her.
âOh, wait, Cla might have something for me⊠talk to you later, bye!â Ana cut off the call before Sav could even get a word in. She knows sheâs gonna get an earful the next time they talk again.
Â
From: Cla
Annie, sorry talaga busy ako eh. Nasa meeting ako now, tawagan na sana kita kaso di ako makaalis.
Tawagan mo to 09xxxxxxxxx. Si Gael yan, free daw siya. Okay sa kanya if okay sayo!
Â
Ana stared at the message for quite some time, already weighing in her options.Â
Kakapalan ko na ba muka ko? Cla naman, out of all peopleâŠ
On one hand, if she calls, her problemâs already solved since Cla told her Gaelâs okay with looking after Aki. Aki would be over the moon, thatâs for sure.
On the other⊠oh yeah, right! Other than a few hangouts here and there, sheâs not close enough to Gael to ask for this huge favor!
Â
From: Vince (Work)
Ana, sorry to message you again. We really need you here in the office. What time are you getting here?
Â
Fuck this.
Â
Â
Ana opened the door upon hearing the doorbell, revealing Gael on the other side. The woman smiled at her, showing sheâs carrying⊠a box of donuts.
âHi! Brought donuts. I didnât bake these though, si Mom nag-bake,â Gael grinned, standing still and waiting for Ana to say something.
Ana, whoâs staring at Gael because this was the first time she saw her wear specs.Â
Wearing glasses shouldnât be this attractive.
âAna?â Gael asked, frowning over Anaâs silence.
âOh, sorry sorry! Come in! And, hala, you didnât have to! Nakakahiya, ako na nga nag-aask ng favor,â Ana rushed out, side stepping to let Gael in.Â
âItâs okay. I stayed at our old house kasi last night, and ayaw ako ngayon paalisin ni Mom nang hindi bitbit to,â Gael said lightly, assuring Ana.
âPasabi kay Doc Avila, thank you!â Gael nodded, placing the box of donuts on the table. âFavorite din ni Aki donuts eh,â Ana added.
âAnyway, sorry, I have to go na. Iâll be back for sure at around 8 p.m. so feel at home here! For food, I cooked some pasta already, you can reheat them for dinner⊠uh⊠what elseââ
âDoc Pretty!â Aki squealed, upon seeing Gael when she went out of her room.
âHi Aki!â Gael said cheerfully.
âAki, Doc Pretty will stay with you while I go to office. Is that oââ
âBEST DAY EVER!!! Go na, Mommy, go to work na!â Aki jumped up and down beside Gael, pulling her arms, making Ana raise an eyebrow at her.
I feel the love, dear daughter.
Gael just laughed, though obviously quite nervous, because itâs obvious Aki has so much energy in her. Ana noticed, and she doesnât know whether to feel sorry or amused.
âGrabe, pinagtatabuyan na ako ng anak ko!â Ana exclaimed, pretending to be hurt.Â
Gael laughed.
âIâm sure youâre gonna miss your Mommy, right, Aki?â Gael supplied, placing a light hand on Akiâs shoulders to try to keep her still.
Gaelâs words made Ana want to stay and spend the day with them too.
Ano, Ana?!
âYes! Pero weâll have fun, Mommy, donât ya worry!â Aki exclaimed with a laugh.
âObviously, not too much sweets,â Ana grimaced, looking at Gael. Gael mock saluted at Ana, making her laugh.Â
Pretty, beautiful, smart, cute, funny⊠ano pa, ano pa?
âThank you again, Gael!â Ana said over her shoulder, grabbing her bags.
âIngat! Say bye to your Mommy, Aki.â
âBye, Mommy!â There was a pause, obviously, Gael coaching Aki. âIngat po!â
Is it so bad to wish this happens every day?
Â
Â
Her day started stressful (looking for someone to watch over Aki), went great for a bit (dreamy, even, when Gael came to their apartment), then turned so fucking sour (they were grilled over the marketing proposal they sent).
So all in all, a roller coaster of emotions for Ana. She just wants to lie down on her bed and sleep âtill lunch tomorrow, but thatâs not possible, is it? Sheâs a Mom. She doesnât get any rest.
She opened the doorâit was 10 p.m. already. Of course, itâs traffic on a Saturday night. Why did she not think about that?
The sight that welcomed her made her forget everything that caused her bad mood.
Gael was sitting on the sofa, supposedly watching TV⊠but most likely fell asleep. Aki was nowhere in sight, most likely sleeping already.Â
Ana went nearer to Gael to wake her up. She feels so guiltyâshe has an idea how tiring it could be to be a doctor⊠then here she was, going home late despite promising Gael sheâd be back by 8. She could see the dark circles under Gaelâs eyes, something she had barely noticed because every time she sees Gael, itâs as if sheâs all smiles and laughs.
âGaelâŠ?â Ana asked softly, gently shaking Gaelâs shoulders. She immediately pulled her hand back when Gael shifted, muttering.
âTry⊠sweetâŠâ Ana smiled, finding Gael too cute.
So she talks in her sleep.
âDonuts? HmmâŠâ Gael muttered.Â
Why is she so freaking cute?
âGaelâŠ?â Ana tried again, shaking a bit harder. She gasped when Gaelâs eyes snapped open⊠landing on her, widening.
âAna!â Gael whispered, obviously caught off guard with how near Anaâs face was. âAy, shocks, nakatulog ako, sorry.âÂ
âNo, itâs okay! I should be the one saying sorry. Iâm two hours late,â Ana smiled apologetically.
âOkay lang âyon!â Gael assured, running a hand on her face to probably wake herself up a bit. âKumain ka na? I reheated the pasta you made, kaso baka malamig na ulit.âÂ
âHavenât yet. Grabe, ang tagal kasi nung meeting namin. Initin ko na lang ulit,â Ana said, walking towards the kitchen.
âAko na! You might be tiredââ
âNo, ako na, Gael. Youâve done too much na, nakakahiya,â Ana said genuinely, growing nervous over a simple act of Gael heating the food for her.Â
âYou sure?â Gael asked.
âYup, so sure! Howâs your day with Aki?â Ana asked, smiling as she have the briefest idea on how a day with Aki usually goes.
âOh,â Gael laughed, making Ana laugh as well. âI should have taken her energy back in EK as a hint,â Gael jested, making Ana laugh more.
âHay, yah. Grabe talaga yung energy niya. Kaya my parents canât watch her na isa lang sa kanila. Dapat both sila, âcause they canât keep up with Akiâs energy,â Ana said.
âI donât know how you do it, honestly,â Gael said softly, watching as Ana went around the kitchen.
âNasanay na⊠and I guess you have an idea how kids are naman. Pretty sure youâve encountered lots of energetic kids like Aki,â Gael nodded, silently agreeing⊠but she seemed too serious.
âYeah⊠though most of the kids I meet are sick,â Gael smiled weakly, making Ana pause.Â
Dumb. Why are you so stupid, Ana?!
âGosh, I have no filter. Gael, Iâm so sorry!â
âNo, itâs okay! I shouldnât have said that, such a downer,â Gael rushed out as well.Â
âNo, Iâm⊠dapat nag-filter ako. Youâre right.â Ana shook her head, smiling apologetically at Gael.
âBut, hey, when they get better naman, itâs so fulfilling.â Ana nodded, berating herself internally even more. Now, Gaelâs the one making her feel better. âLike Aki.â
âYeah⊠like Aki.â Ana just agreed, not trusting herself to say more.
There was a heavy silence.
âYou can stayââ
âI should goââ
They both said at the same time.
âAh, I mean, itâs late kasi eh. Baka inaantok ka, itâs not safe to drive back home,â Ana immediately defended herself.
âThanks for the concern! Kaso on-call ako maaga bukas, I have to go back home,â Gael said, smiling apologetically.
âHay, I made you stay late pa. I'm so sorry talaga!"Â
"It's okay, really, Ana. I would have said no if it wasn't okay with me, hmm?" Gael assured.Â
"Okay. If you say so. But before you goâ" Ana turned off the stove and went to the fridge to get something. She pulled out what looked like a cake box.
âFor you! I donât really know what else to give as a thank you,â Ana didnât say anything more, but she was so happy when she noticed how Gaelâs face lit up upon seeing the mini cake box Ana was giving her.
âThe most delicious cake in the worldâŠâ Gael said, repeating Akiâs line again.
âIs it not?â Ana teased. Gael smiled widely, taking the box.
âIt definitely is!â
Â
Â
A bit dramaticâthatâs what she is right now. Ana jogged through the streets of the city, still thinking of what she could do for the rest of the day.
After that stressful blip in the calendar (made slightly better by Gaelâs presence), her family noticed how sheâs been looking so rundown⊠and offered to let her have a day to herself, just to make up for their unavailability when Ana needed them.
She really didnât need a day for herself, any day with Aki is the best day.Â
But then again, sheâs also human. She gets tired. She needs time for herself. But she feels guilty for agreeing to be relieved of Aki duties.
The guilt intensified when she has no idea what she should do after this jog.
Going round the corner, Ana was so deep in her thought she bumped into someone⊠hard.Â
Why wouldnât it be? She was running. And holy fuck, the other person went down on the floor.
âIâm so sorry!â Ana gasped out, crouching to help the other person sit up⊠only to see someone she definitely knows.
âGael, oh my gosh, are you okay? Iâm so sorry,â Ana rushed out, helping Gael gather her things that got scattered on the ground.
âGrabe, ang lakas mo pala, Ana?â Gael chuckled, as she accepted Anaâs offered hand for her to stand up.
"I was running, kaya yung impact... so sorry talaga, Gael," Ana said sincerely.
"No need! Ako rin naman, 'di tumitingin sa dinadaanan," Gael said. Ana took in Gael's appearance and she was looking disheveled. Who wouldn't be when someone practically knocked them down on the floor?!
"So, no Aki?" Gael asked, walking to a nearby bench to fix herself and her thingsâwith Ana falling into step beside her.
"'Aki Day' daw nila Mama," Ana explained.
"Ah... so, 'me time' for you?" Gael asked, smiling at her.
"I guess so. Pero I don't know what to do aside from jog," Ana shrugged, watching as Gael checked her bag, which was filled with doctor stuff.
"I'm free for the day! Pwede kita samahan, we can think of some fun things to do!" Gael offered, a bit cheerily.
"You don't have work?" Ana asked.
"Ah, just got off, actually. 24-hour shift," Gael said honestly. Ana's eyes widened.
She just knocked Gael down. Gael, who just came out of a 24-hour shift.
"You should be resting!" Ana sputtered out.
"Nah... I usually can't kapag ganito," Gael said, giving Ana a small smile.
"But, still. Tapos binangga pa kita. You should go home and sleep, Gael," Ana said softly, reaching out to touch the woman's arm. She doesn't know why she did that. She just feels like she wanted to.
"I... I actually offered for me too... 'cause I don't think I can be alone right now. Tough case kanina," Gael said, looking at Ana shyly. "But it's okay if you don't want to!"
That's when Ana noticed that aside from looking tired, it was evident from Gael's face that something happened at work. It doesn't take a genius to guess that it has something to do with one of her patients.
"I want to, Gael. Let's go?" Ana smiled.
It was worth it, seeing Gael's wide smile.
Â
Â
âThereâs a fair here every weekend!â Ana suddenly exclaimed. âFood trip?â
âAy, oo nga pala, âno? Kaya pala ang daming taoâŠâ Gael trailed off, taking in all the people walking and lining up on stalls.Â
âCâmon! Ang daming foods here,â Ana excitedly dragged Gael with her, with the latter unable to say no.
They weaved through the sea of people going on all directions, and bought and ate a lot: wagyu on stick, sausages, fries, and finally⊠dessert.
âHere po yung order niyo!â Both Ana and Gael were shocked as the lady handed over the Korean waffles they orderedâthey got one each⊠and it was definitely a wrong move.
They couldnât say anything, they just quietly took their orders and walked on in silence. Finally, they stopped in a less busy corner⊠and just took in their order.
âIâŠâ Gael trailed off, eyes finally catching Ana. The minute their eyes met, they both started laughing hysterically.
âI didnât expect it was this⊠big!â Ana exclaimed, trying to see her waffle in all angles. It was big, but to be honest, she could finish it on her own if she werenât as full as she is now.
âAna, hindi ko mauubos âto!â Gael gently exclaimed.
âOh gosh⊠we didnât know. Dapat isa na lang pala, share na lang pala tayo,â Gael nodded, looking at her own waffle sullenly.
âYou know what? Itâs just 2 in the afternoon. We still got a long way to go, we can walk around, we can stretch this âtil dinner,â Ana declared, trying to convince even herself.
âPang one month ko na âtong dessert⊠and I even have your cake pa at home!â Gael whined. Ana smiled, feeling satisfied that Gael was already comfortable with her to show some other side of herself⊠not just as Anaâs newfound friend or Akiâs doctor.
âWe gotta suck it up like adults,â Ana said.
After 30 minutes of combined walking and eatingâŠ
âThis is the best I can do,â Gael said after swallowing the last bite her body could accommodate. Her waffle was half eaten⊠and Ana seemed to have barely touched hers.
âHey! Hindi mo pa kinakain!â Gael pointed out. âAng dayaâŠâ
âGael, itâs either I donât eat and we walk peacefully or I eat and I vomit and youâll have to bear with the staresâŠâ Ana explained, making Gael laugh. Ana saw a bit of whipped cream on the side of Gaelâs mouth and out of instinct, she reached out to wipe it with a tissue.
âOh, sorry you haveâŠâ Ana trailed off, becoming aware of what she did after she noticed Gael stopped laughing. âSorry, may whipped cream kasi⊠habit,â Ana rushed out, diverting her gaze to hide how hot her face became.
Nakakahiya ka, Ana!
âItâs okay! Thanks, Ana,â Gael said. âUpo muna tayo?â Gael asked, pointing at the bench with space enough for two.Â
Ana just nodded and they both sat in silence while still holding their unfinished waffles.
âHas it been fun, so far?â Ana asked after a couple of minutes, turning to Gael. She saw Gael start to smile, playing on the little whipped cream left on her waffle.
âYeah⊠took my mind off⊠whatever it was,â Gael nodded, sending Ana a grateful smile.
âThatâs great! Buti naman, I was half nervous baka ma-bore ka dito eh,â Ana admitted.
âIt was the most fun I had in years now, I think,â Gael suddenly said, looking at her with piercing eyes. Ana frowned. No⊠that can't be.
âSerious?â Ana said.
âYeah. I mean, I was so focused kasi on studying and residency⊠then I barely had any friends back in the states. Really went there for my career lang⊠with Mom. Kinda sad, pero ngayon lang ako nagkakaroon ng leisure time, thanks to Cla and Mai as well,â Gael explained.
âI admire that youâre so dedicated with your job. But you know what? Aki and I are here if ever you wanna do something funâlalo na si Aki. Hay, that kid never shut up about you,â Ana chuckled, shaking her head as she recalled how much of Akiâs stories involved âDoc Pretty.â
âIâm truly honored na Aki likes me that muchââ
âWhatâs not to like?â Wow, Ana, hindi ka man lang nag-intay kahit one second para sabihin yon?
âReally?â It was the first time Ana saw Gael smirk and that should be illegal.
âYouâre pretty, smart⊠you treat sick kids for a living⊠youâre kind, youâre so sweet with Akiâyouâre practically a whole package!â Gael looked so surprised after hearing Ana say all those words.
If Ana could cover her mouth right now, she would.
âWowâŠâ Gael finally said. âWhole package, huh? So, if I ask you out on a date, would you say yes?â Gael asked, both teasingly and nervously.
Anaâs eyes were so big, her mouth opening and closing a bit trying to find the right words.
But before she could even say anything, she heard a familiar laughâSienna.
Ana turned around trying to find where her sister is⊠only to find her a couple of steps away. She was with⊠her âbest friendâ (the whole family has a bet going that theyâre more than that) and obviously, Sienna still hadnât notice her.
âHide⊠letâs hide!â Ana hissed, dragging Gael with her to hide behind a stallâenough to not be in Siennaâs line of sight, but near enough to for them to see Sienna and Jess (đ„).
âWhy are we hiding⊠from your sister?â Gael asked confusedly.
âKahit anong sabihin ko diyan, iisipin niyan sinusundan ko siya,â Ana said, not taking her eyes off her sister and her best friend⊠who both looked like they have their own world.
Ana smiled, cause Sienna looks so genuinely happy.Â
âBagay sila, âno?â Ana asked Gael.
âUm⊠oo?â Gael said hesitantly, watching as Ana pulled out her phone and snapped a few pictures of Sienna and Jess. âSo, weâre hiding⊠and youâre taking photos of them? If I didnât know any better, mapagkakamalan kitang stalkerâŠâ Gael teased.
âQuiet ka diyan. This is for the fam,â Ana said, taking more pictures before shutting her phone off as Sienna and Jess were now far from them.
âYou are so weirdââ Gael said, still frowning over Ana.Â
âAnd yet you just asked me to date you,â Ana pointed out.
âHypotheticallyâŠâ Gael pointed out as well, smiling at Ana who was rolling her eyes.
âWell, Iâm gonna be upfront, Gael. If you ask me on a date, I donât know if Iâll say yes or no. Kasi, hindi lang ako yung need kong isipin, you know? Thereâs Aki, too. DatingâŠâ
â⊠will complicate things?â No⊠kinda. Maybe. Get it together, Ana!
âYeah, maybe⊠complicate thingsâŠâ Ana said, albeit slowly.
âI understand, Ana. And I do agree, Aki should be the first priority.â Gaelâs smile held no judgment and the more irrational part of Ana wanted to make the move, make it not a hypothetical question, and just fucking ask Gael out.
Whyâd you have to be so perfect, Gael?
Chapter 3: Sick Gael
Notes:
took me quite a while to do this! đ„Č
Chapter Text
Ana got back earlier than expected from her supposed five-day business trip. She's gonna have the next three days off, as tomorrow's Saturday and her boss generously gave this Friday as her off day.
She was initially ecstatic about it, but her excitement soon died down when she found out there won't be an energetic Aki welcoming her back, as Cla and Mari extended their vacation in Baguio... and Aki's with them. They'll be staying there until Saturday, as they didn't expect Ana to be back so soon.
Now, Ana's day off is Aki-less and she didn't know what to do.Â
She should really start getting a life outside her daughter.
Ana was literally just sifting through Netflix, watching previews for about 30 minutes now as she really doesn't feel like watching anything... but what could she do?!
Sienna has class, Sav's obviously at work...Â
Okay, that's just downright depressing that that's my only circle.
It was a bit pathetic how quickly she answered Cla's call.
"Hey, Cla! What's up? Pauwi na kayo?" Ana chuckled hesitantly after, feeling embarrassed with how quickly she spitted out those words.
"Annie, hello, hindi pa... bukas pa. Sorry, 'di talaga namin in-expect na uuwi ka kaagad kaya nag-extend kami..." Cla apologized again.
"No, no, no. It's okay! Ako rin, I didn't expect I would be home this early. How's Aki?" Ana asked, turning off the TV as she gave up choosing a movie to watch.
"Ah, okay naman! Miss ka na nga eh, umoorder sila ngayon ni Mari ng food. Nasa table ako... actually Annie, tumawag ako kasi hingi sana ako favor..." Ana frowned, as Cla's shy tone was something new for her.
"Yeah, sure, what is it?" Ana asked, sitting up from her seat.
"Si Gael kasi, nagpapabili ng gamot sa 'min para daw sa patient niya. Like huh? Totoo ka ba? Napaka-obvious naman na para sa kanya gamot. Ayaw kasi no'n magsabi 'pag may sakit siya eh. Kaso obviously, 'di ko agad mapupuntahan, tapos si Mai, out of town din. Si Tita naman, nasa conference, tas mga kapatid niya malayo mga two hours away pa bago makapunta sa kanya. Ikaw lang alam kong free right now na malapit..." Cla rambled.
"Oh, you're asking if I could buy her meds...?" Ana asked, cutting Cla off as she seems to be close to a spiral. Ana stood up, though, already prepping to go out.Â
Gael needs her help, of course she'll be there right away.
"Pwede ba?" Cla asked again.
"Of course, it's no problem! Just text me the meds to buy," Ana said as she grabbed her keys and went out of her place in a flash.
"Sorry talaga sa abala, ah! Nag-aalala lang kami doon eh, hangga't 'di nagco-collapse tatanggi 'yon na may sakit siya. Tas ngayon walang makakapunta agad, 'di tuloy namin alam ano na talaga nangyayari. Andon lang siya daw sa condo niya though, send ko sayo yung bibilhin pati address niya."
They ended the call and Ana didn't know impatience until now. She's feeling jittery, she doesn't know if it's just worry over Gael being sick or nervousness that it's her first time going to Gael's place...Â
Oh gosh, does Gael even know she's going there?Â
Lots of thoughts went through her head as she bought the meds Cla sent her and drove to the address. She's meeting Gael... she's meeting Gael again right after their food trip adventure... and that freaking hypothetical question...
Focus, Ana, may sakit yung tao 'yan pa talaga inisip mo!
Before ringing Gael's doorbell, Ana sent Cla a message firstâtelling her she's here at Gael's already. She waited for Cla's reply (who haven't even read Ana's message yet), stalling on entering Gael's condo.
Ana rang the doorbell twice and knocked a few times, but there wasn't any answer.Â
Shocks... should I be worried?
Her anxiety rose up quickly, in just a second, when there still wasn't any answer on Gael's door and Cla's not even responding.
You've been stalling tapos ngayon pa-panic ka. Ayan napapala mo, Ana!
On her fifth ring, she partnered it with a call.Â
"Gael? It's me, Ana. Can you open the door?" Ana called out, trying to sound positive even though she's too worried. What if Gael's in such a bad condition she can't even get up? Oh gosh, what if something happened to her like she fell over andâ
The door opened.Â
Ana was relieved upon seeing Gael, but it turned into worry again when she saw the state Gael was in.Â
The woman had red-rimmed eyes and equally red nose. Her eyes were half opened, and her shoulders were slumped. She was wearing a sweater and it wasn't even cold. She looked so pale. Though, the woman was smiling.Â
Oh, Gael...
"Ana! Hi! Anong ginagawa mo dito?" Gael asked perkilyâwell, as energetic as she could. Her voice was huskier and nasalizedâshe's obviously so sick.
"Cla told me you asked her to buy meds..." Ana said softly, smiling at Gael. The woman's eyes shifted to the bag she's holding, as if trying to make sense of something.
Ana could see when it clicked for Gael, when her eyebrows shut up as if unlocking a long-forgotten memory.
"Oh yeah! For my patient, oo nga pala. Nagpabili ako. Sorry, inabala ka pa, Ana. Sabi ko sa kanya 'wag na eh..." Gael said shyly.
"No, it's okay, Gael! Hindi abala, don't worry. It's my day off too," Ana said.Â
"Hala, day off mo pa. Anyway, I can pay you na and..." Gael reached out for the bag, but Ana just held it far away from the sick woman. It obviously confused Gael.Â
Yeah, no, she's not just gonna stand here and have this woman deny she's sick. She looks worse than deathâalbeit still beautiful.
Focus, Ana.
"Okay ka lang ba, Gael?" Ana asked, as if she didn't just hold the meds away from Gael.Â
"Ah... oo naman," Gael trailed off, cautiously eying Ana, especially with what she did.
"You're feeling alright? These meds aren't really for you?" Ana asked innocently, trying to see if Gael would lie.Â
"They're not for me. Para sa patient..." Gael smiled, trying to reach for the meds again. Ana took a step back to the hallway, eying Gael as the woman was basically holding on the door to keep standing.
Who's gonna tell her her excuse sounded so ridiculous? She's a kid doctor, and buying meds for her patient... okay, some do that but still.Â
"Oh, you treat adult patients now? 'Cause pang-adult 'tong pinabili mo, eh." Ana saw Gael's eyes widen, knowing she's caught. "You're saying... if hawakan ko ang noo mo, hindi mainit?" Gael's eyes widened and she took a step back.Â
"No, definitely not. You know what... ako na lang bibili later. Sorry sa abala ulit... bye, Ana!" Gael said hurriedly, closing the door only for Ana to stop itâeasily, as the woman inside the condo barely had any strength in her.
They fought on opening and closing the door for a good 10 seconds before Ana finally won. The way Gael's wide eyes were trained on her was kinda amusing. It should be impossible to look this adorable when you're sick as an adult.
"Gael just admit these are for you," Ana called out, letting herself inside Gael's place as she closed the door behind her.
Gael was obviously making sure there's enough distance between the two of them, as she's already on the other end of her condo.
"No, they're not. One thing you should know about me, hindi ako nagkakasakit," Gael smirkedâwhich looked sadly pathetic because she barely have any color on her lips, and she's trying to busy herself with getting a glass of water.
Ana raised an eyebrow, as the woman was obviously doing everything to hold herself upâher hand never left the walls or counter tops for support.
"Gael, just lie down, please, before you fall over," Ana said, although there's an edge in her voiceâsomething she uses when she wants Aki to know she have to obey Ana or else.
"Okay lang talaga ako, Ana!" Gael said, nodding her head in the process before drinking the water.Â
It seemed as if that head movement made her dizzy, as she suddenly leaned forward and uncontrollably slammed on the counter theâthankfullyâplastic cup of water.
"Oh God, Gael," Ana gasped as she hurriedly walked towards Gael, as the women held on the counter for dear life with one hand, while also holding her head with the other.
"No... no... I just got dizzy... 'tis normal," Gael muttered as Ana looped her arm on Gael's waist...
To prevent her from falling. Yeah, that's right. She just doesn't want Gael to fall on the floor.
"No, it's not. You're a doctor, dapat alam mo 'yonâespecially when you're so hot!" Ana heard her words right after they came out of her mouth and...
"Oh yeah?" Gael asked teasingly, finally facing her as her dizziness might have stopped. Ana would have rolled her eyes, if not for how Gael seemed to have gotten paler after her dizzy spell.
"Gael seriously, wala ka nang kulay, oh. Please sit down... or gusto mo sa bed?" Ana said worriedly.Â
"Fine. But no, I'll stay sa couch." Ana finally took in the state of the condo, and she could see how there seems to be a nest on Gael's couch. It was a bit bigger than normal couches, and Ana just knows it's just as comfortable as Gael's bed.
Gael must have noticed her looking around when she helped her settle.
"Bed feels too big, kaya dito ako minsan humihiga." Gael smiled. Ana finally looked back at her as Gael wrapped a blanket around herself despite already wearing a thick sweatshirt.
And you're telling me you're not sick.
"What? Ang lamig eh!" Gael exclaimed, as she caught Ana's accusing stare.
"Huh... but your aircon's off." Ana pointed out, making Gael check and see that it was indeed turned off. Ana reached out to feel Gael's forehead, only for the woman to avoid her hand, looking at her in alarm.
"What are you doing?" Gael demanded, as she leaned far away from Ana.
"Tingnan ko lang kung may lagnat ka, ang init mo kanina nung nakasandal ka habang naglalakad." Gael frowned at her. "Gael, please. Just admit you're sick. And please tell me you have a thermometer here."
Ana looked at the coffee table, which only had a half-eaten cup noodles, gatorade, two remote controls... and a half-eaten familiar cake. Ana had to smile at that. Gael wasn't kidding when she told Ana she's gonna be eating that cake for quite some time.
Ana looked again at Gael for an answer and they had a staring matchâsomething Ana has been trained so well, having two sisters and Aki.Â
"Fine. Andon medicine kit." Gael pointed at the cupboard above her sink.Â
When Ana pulled out the box, she gotta admit this was the most complete medicine kit she ever saw. Though, what to expect? She's in a doctor's condo.
She had to thank the universe Gael ran out of the basic meds though, or else they wouldn't even have any idea Gael's sickâjudging by how Cla described a sick Gael.Â
When Ana got back to Gael, she was surprised the woman was already sleeping. She was wrapped in her blanket with only her face showing.
Ana ignored how she felt this sudden need to care for Gael, heart clenching over the sight of her, sleeping and sick. Against her will, she shook Gael awake. The woman opened her eyes though just a little.
"Let's take your temp, Gael," Ana said softly. Gael blinked a few times, as if trying to make sense of Ana. She looked at the thermometer Ana was holding. Quietly, Gael sat up, taking the thermometer.
"Oh right, andito ka nga pala, sorry," Gael said apologetically... looking dazed, as if it wasn't just minutes ago when Ana asked if she has a thermometer. "You don't have to stay, Ana..." Gael continued.
"Gael, no one in their right mind would leave you alone after seeing you're like this," Ana said, looking at Gael up and down.Â
"But I'm fine," Gael insisted.
"Okay. I'll leave kapag sinabi niyan wala kang lagnat," Ana said, crossing her arms. She bit back a smile as a pale Gael rolled her eyes at her before putting the thermometer in her mouth. Ana could see how tired Gael was, as she leaned back on the couch and closed her eyes.
Ana snapped a pictureâthinking, in her defense, she's just gonna update Cla. Nothing wrong with that, right?
She sent the pic to Cla, getting a response instantly.
Â
Â
From: Cla
sabi na nga ba may sakit yan eh! kamusta siya? may lagnat?
Â
To: Cla
she keeps saying she's fine đ waiting pa sa thermometer. but she's definitely sick, ang putla and kanina nahilo pa!
Â
From: Cla

Â
To: Cla
ohhhh i can stay naman and look after her...
Â
Â
Ana closed her phone as soon as she saw Cla's typing an answer. She felt a bit embarrassed for some reason like, why did she say that? Gosh, Ana.
Is she and Gael's in this level of friendship already? Is she intruding so much?Â
Her phone notified she got a message, but she ignored it as Gael's thermometer beeped. A reasonable excuse as to why she can't reply.
She immediately snatched the thermometer from Gael before the woman could even pull it out herself, obviously not trusting the woman to tell her true temperature. She could feel Gael's shocked gaze fixed on her as she read the result.
As soon as she saw the temp, Ana's eyes went big.
"Gael!" Ana said, horrified.Â
"What? Kung maka-react ka naman parang pregnancy test 'yan at positive," Gael joked, though with a weak voice.
"39. Konti na lang dadalhin ka na sa ospital," Ana snapped. "And you keep saying you're fine!"Â
"Sira yung thermometer," Gael said. Ana glared. "Wow, you're scary."
"You should be scared. Lie down and rest na. I'll just get your meds." Ana ordered. Gael didn't move, just continued staring at her blankly. "Gael."
Gael just stared at her, focus seemingly flying away.
"Gael, I swearâ"
"Ana, I need a bowl 'cause I'm gonna be sick," Gael muttered as her body lurched, as if she's about to vomit. Ana immediately went to the kitchen and grabbed the first bowl she could find. She went back to Gael as the woman dry-heaved.
"Here, here." Ana rushed out, putting the bowl in front of Gael while her other hand rubbed circles on Gael's back. The woman's breathing was erratic, and Ana cringed when she finally vomited.
"Sorry..." Gael whispered, before going for another round. It took them a good five minutes before Gael finally sat straight, a sheen of sweat on her forehead.
"Okay na?" Ana asked, eying the woman with closed eyes. Ana got a weak "yeah" before she stood up to discard the... that.
When she came back, Gael was still in the same position.
"That was disgusting, I'm sorry..." Gael said, voice hoarse.
"Stop saying 'sorry,' okay, Gael? You're sick, it's normal. Besides, I have a kid and I survived her as a toddler. You should know I've seen worse," Ana joked and she got a small smile from Gael. Her eyes were still closed, and Ana just knows the woman's trying to quell her nausea.
"You're a great mom, Ana. Aki's so lucky to have you," Gael muttered and if Ana wasn't near, she wouldn't have heard her.Â
Why does Gael have to be always so sweet to her?
"Thank you, Gael," Ana said, going as far as reaching to hold Gael's hand, giving it a squeeze. Gael just nodded and still kept her eyes closed.Â
After a few moments, Gael squeezed her hand as well.
"I should brush my teeth..." Gael said, eyes now half-opened, but she kept still.
"No, don't stand muna, hm? Drink meds then lie down and take a nap." Gael didn't answer her, as the women went back to closing her eyes. Ana took that as a sign of agreement, standing up to get the meds.Â
Gael thankfully didn't put up a fight when Ana gave her the meds she bought.Â
"Okay, nap ka muna. And let's lessen the layers." Ana went to remove the blanket from Gael, but the woman held on it and whined.
"No... please? Ayaw... it's cold..." Her voice was so small and she was looking at Ana with half-lidded eyes and a pout.Â
Gael's pouting at her and why is her freaking resolve weakening?
"Gael..."
"I'm cold po." Gael held the blanket tighter, keeping it close, and Ana wondered why her cheeks suddenly felt hot as well.
Nahahawa na ba ako kay Gael...
"Okay, bahala ka. Kulit. 'Di ka gagaling agad niyan. Matulog ka na nga." Gael didn't say anything back, but the woman obeyed and closed her eyes... and there was a smile on her face.
Dealing with a sick doctor is surely the hardest... especially with Gael, who's so freaking in denial she's sick.Â
After making sure Gael was sound asleep, Ana went to check on her phone.

Of course Cla would tell Mari about what's happening. Really, she doesn't know why she offered... though, she couldn't imagine being anywhere other than here, right now.
It doesn't make any sense why she's so comforted by the fact that she's the one taking care of a sick Gael.
Not that she wanted Gael to be sick...
Ugh.

Taking care of a sick Gael became easier when the woman finally accepted the fact that she could get sick. Ana just didn't expect the sudden switch in Gael.
"Are you feeling a bit okay?" Ana asked.
"You stayed..." Gael muttered, looking at her with tired eyes despite sleeping the whole afternoon.
"Hindi ako aalis, okay? I'll take care of you." Gael hummed and nodded, a smile appearing on her still pale face. "I cooked soup. You should eat kasi you have to take your meds again."
"I feel like I'm dying," Gael grumbled. Ana tried to quell the sudden nervousness that spiked at her.
"Do you feel worse? Anong masakit, Gael?" Ana hurriedly asked.
"Ugh..." Gael groaned. "I'm dying, I'm gonna die. My head aches..." Ana heard a sniff. "Tell my family I love them, Ana. Tell Cla and Mai..."
Ana frowned... surprised by the sudden shift in Gael's words. Okay, what to do? Ana kept consoling Gael as she didn't know what to do. Gael just kept repeating those words over and over again and she's not answering Ana's questions.

Â
Instead of sending a video as if she's invading Gael's privacy, Ana just resorted to a video call. Cla immediately answered, revealing her inside a hotel.
"I don't know what to do, Cla," Ana sighed. She just knows Cla can hear Gael's groans in the background, what with how Cla frowned as if she's trying to make sense of what she's hearing.
"Can I see Gael?" Cla asked. Ana shifted so she can comfortable capture Gael in the camera, and Cla could definitely see Gael.
"Hoy Gael! Mahiya ka naman kay Ana." Ana shifted the focus to her, showing how disappointed she was that Cla said that.
"Why are you saying that?!" Ana hissed.
"Cla? My head hurts eh. I'm dying," Gael said beside her with a sniff.Â
"Hay nako, Gael. OA lang 'yan, Annie. Once tanggap na niya na may sakit nga siya, magiging exag na 'yan. 'Wag mo pansininâ"
"Oh yeah? What if it's true, Cla? She's obviously in painâ"
"She won't be so vocal if she's really in so much pain na kailangan na ipa-ospital. Sabihin mo kay Gael, 'wag siya OA!" Cla said. "Oh, before I say goodbye, someone wants to talk to you..."
Aki came on the screen, and Ana immediately brightened. Her daughter had quite a number of layers on, more likely because she gets cold easily and Baguio's temperature is a bit on the down low now.
"Hi, baby!" Ana greeted.
"Hi, Mommy! You're with Doc Pretty?! You're having sleepovers?! Without me?!" Aki rambled on, demanding Ana to answer
"Yah, baby. She's sick kasi..." Ana showed Gael briefly, whose eyes were closed and who looks like she's sleeping again.
Ana sighed. She has to wake her up again to eat.Â
"But she's a doctor!" Aki said, confused.
"Baby, they're also people, 'di ba?" Ana said. Aki frowned a bit before eyes lighting up. She rambled on about her trip to Baguio, and Ana felt as if she's recharged seeing how happy her daughter was.
"Tell Doc Pretty, pagaling po siya!" Aki bid farewell before they ended the call.
Â
Â
Ana stayed for the night caring for a sick Gael and luckily at around 2 a.m., her fever broke. She fell asleep on the couch beside Gael, and didn't notice until she was shook awake by Gael.
"Ana..." Ana gasped, waking up immediately. She looked around before settling on Gael, who looked so much better than yesterday although she looks obviously exhausted.
"Gael! Oh gosh, I fell asleep. Do you need anything? What's wrong?" Ana asked, looking at Gael up and down, trying to see if something's wrong.
The girl just chuckled at her.
"No... Wala. Okay na ko. This time totoo na, thanks to you," Gael laughed a bit, though a bit shy. "I was just gonna say na lipat ka sa bedroom ko, para makatulog ka maayos? Sorry talaga ah..."
"Wala 'yon, Gael. You fixed Aki's armâ"
"That's paid, Ana."
"âbinantayan mo si Aki when I couldn't... this is nothing!" Ana ignored her.
"Okay, okay. Seems as if I won't win. Lipat ka na sa kwarto, tara na." Gael urged her to stand up. Ana was supposed to say no, but upon reading 4 a.m. on the clock, she gave in to Gael's offer and headed to the bed.
Before drifting back to sleep, Ana's mind registered how Gael settled beside her... and how they're sleeping so close to each other.
Â
Â
"Ay shocks! Hala, hala!" Ana blinked, waking up, confused as to why she seemingly heard her sister's voice. "'Don't go in, Aki, you're still innocent!"
Ana sat up and looked around, mind still lagging on why she's in a different room and grey walls...
Gael's.Â
She looked at the arm on her waist, then trailed to where it leads... beside her... and there was Gael, facing and snuggled close to her. She unconsciously placed her hand on the woman's forehead, relieved that it now feels normal.
"Kayong dalawa siguraduhin niyong desente kayo bago kayo lumabas! May bata dito!" Mari?!
Ana looked at the time, it was already 3 in the afternoon. They slept past lunch, what the hell?
Ana couldn't believe the time, feeling as if she woke up in an alternate universe. Was she just so fucking tired she literally slept for 9 hours straight? Or was it because the bed was so comfy...
No, you were just tired, Ana.
"Mommy! Doc Pretty! Hurry, I'm here!" Aki's voice sounded on the other side of the door. Ana felt Gael shift beside her.
"Was that Aki?" Gael's husky voice greeted her and dear lord.
"Apparently, they're here," Ana stated the obvious.
"Oh... good morning?" Gael said hesitantly, stretching before sitting up. "I feel much much better, by the way."
Of course, you slept next to me, that's why.
Don't you fucking dare say that out loud, Ana.
"That's good to know," Ana could only say.
"Mommy!" Aki shouted again.
"Nagbibihis pa sila Mommy, Aki." Ana rolled her eyes at her sister's words. The things she's implying.
"Bihis? What?" Gael asked, lost.
"Nevermind her. Both my sisters are crazy." Ana brushed it off, turning away to find her slippers and hide her possibly red cheeks.
Fucking Mari.
"Coming na kami!" Ana exclaimed.
When they walked out of the room, Ana ignored the smirk Mari was wearing and the smile on Cla's face.Â
"Mommy, finally! I missed you so much!" Aki greeted her. She heard Gael greeting Cla but paid no mind, as her focus was on Aki.
"Next time, sama po ako sa sleepover with Doc Pretty, ah?" Aki looked up at her with those puppy eyes.
"Sama daw sa sleepover." The way Mari emphasized the word told Ana whatever she was implying.
"Don't let me catch you, Mari." Ana glared. Her eyes shifted to Gael, who let out a chuckle after she said that.
"Doc Pretty! Doc Pretty! Did you miss me? 'Di po ako sinama ni Mommy sa sleepover," Aki just ditched her as her daughter skipped and jumped to Gael.
"Hi Aki! Of course, I missed you! My favorite 7-year old in the whole world!" Gael cheerfully greeted. Ana had to smile at how loud Aki's squeal was. "Buti 'di ka sinama ni Mommy mo, or else mahawa ka sa 'kin."
"Oh, right..."
"We brought food." Cla gestured at the takeout on the table and Ana smiled in thanks.
"Alam naming baka masyado kayong napagod at oversleepâ"
"Mari, I swear..." Ana threatened. Mari looked at her innocently with a fake offended look.Â
"Hala, bakit na naman? Sasabihin ko, for sure pagod pa si Gael ngayon kasi kakagaling niya lang. Ikaw kung ano-ano iniisip mo," Mari rattled on in defense. Ana knows her sister too well so she rolled her eyes.
"Ay, ang ingay niyo. Kain na, lalo ka na Gael." Cla said, while opening the takeout. Mari's smirk at her made her want to clock her sister out.
Â
Â
As soon as Ana settled at home after being convinced by Gael that she's all okay now, she can't help but feel the disbelief that she just took care of a sick Gael.
And they slept in a bed.
And Gael's arm wrapped around her waist when she woke up.
Did Gael remember?
Should it be a big deal? Is she just making it a big deal? Why the fuck am I gaslighting myself?
As her thoughts continued to spiral, Ana heard her phone chime.

Chapter 4: Zoo Date

this is probably the longest time i've worked on a chapter đ€Ż
Chapter Text
"Doc Pretty, please tell my mommy na I have to have a dog," Aki whined for the hundredth time as she went at the back seat of Gael's car.
True to her word, Gael insisted on driving Aki to school and it's been going on for about three weeks now. Granted, her schedule only allows her to do that every Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but Aki was too happy nonetheless.
"Oh... kay, it's been two days and dog pa rin?" Gael asked cheekily, in a slightly teasing manner as Ana got settled on the passenger seat with an obviously quite annoyed look on her face. "I would have thought cat phase na siya by now."
"She never shuts up about a pet dog! And it's entirely your fault." Ana narrowed her eyes at Gael. Totally her fault. If Gael didn't brought up last Tuesday about her best friend when she was growing up, Tio the great Aspin, Aki wouldn't get it on her head that she, too, should have a friend dog.
"Why is it myânagkwento lang naman ako about kay Tio!" Gael exclaimed as she started the engine and started to drive to Aki's school. "And he's the best dog, so he deserves to be remembered."
"Basta, ikaw naglagay sa head niya na having a dog is a need. Not a wantâmind youâbut a need. Her exact words." Ana rolled her eyes and chose not to point it out when Gael obviously tried to bite back a laugh.
"Hey, I'm still here, Mommy!" Aki exclaimed. "And I want a dog."
"You don't want a penguin?" Gael randomly asked, making Ana look at the doctor as if a screw's gone loose in her head. Did she even think how unbearable Aki would be if she thought she can have a penguinâher favorite animal that is obviously impossible to take home literally, logistically, and legally? "They're quite funny too."
"Pwede po penguin sa bahay?!" Aki gasped and squealed at the idea. Ana audibly groaned, truly a bit annoyed at Gael. Why in the world does she plant these ideas in her daughter's head?
"Aki, they should be living in icy places. They can't be in climates like ours na mainit and no iceâ"
"Actually, they can be!" Gael chimed in, stopping at a red light. Aki gasped and Ana glared at her more intensely. What's up with this woman?!
"Mommy, Doc Pretty is a doctor... I choose to believe her."Â
"Such a smart girl, Aki! High five nga!" Gael cheered, turning a bit to raise her left hand at Aki in the backseat. The child clapped her hand as strong as she could. "That's why you're my favorite!"
"I can never with you two." Ana gave up, slumping on the passenger seat.
Those three weeks of constantly seeing Gael just made her closer with Aki. Turns out, the doctor can be as childish as she wants which clicks so well with Aki, more-so when it's about conspiring against Ana.
"Aw, Mommy's sad na," Aki said as Gael started driving again, in a slightly teasing manner. Ana still can't believe how Aki's slowly adapting Gael's mannerisms, especially how Gael teases her.
"Tampo na siya..." Gael said, reaching out to pinch Ana quickly on the cheeks, to which the Ana slapped away.Â
Nope, she's not gonna get me like this.
"Mommy, 'wag ka na po tampo." Ana rolled her eyes and tried to hide her smile as Aki kissed her cheek repeatedly.
"Okay, okay, enough na. We're here in your school na." Before Gael or Ana could say anything, Aki got out of the car and ran away immediately. Ana raised her eyebrow.
She's gonna remember...Â
Aki stopped so suddenly. The kid turned around and wore a sheepish smile.
"Sorry!" Aki exclaimed as she run back again, standing on her toes to give Ana a kiss. "Bye, Mommy, I love you!"
"I love you too, babyâ"
"Bye Doc Pretty! I love you! Tell Mommy I need my penguin!" Then Aki ran off again.
Ana stared at her child's retreating figure, trying to gauge what she should react to first. That was the first time Aki told Gael she loves her and while it might have been a wholesome momentâit should have beenâAna felt this dull feeling that might have been lingering for quite some time.Â
Aki's growing too attached to Gael. It should have been no surprise, what with how much time they're spending together. And it was okay for Ana. But a sudden doubt sprung up on her that if ever there was a riff between her and GaelâÂ
Okay, no, Ana. You're not going there. You're just friends!
"... Ana? Hey...?" Ana snapped out of her trance only to see Gael looking at her, worried. They were still by the entrance of Aki's school.
"Yes, yes, I'm fine." Ana gave Gael a small smile, obviously hung up still on the sudden thoughts that came from Aki's simple "I love you" to Gael.
"Okay... if you're sure." Gael casted one last worried look before starting the car and driving back to Ana's place. And... surprise, surprise. Ana can't hold herself back.
"So, Aki told you she loves you," Ana brought up, trying her best to sound as positive as she could.
"Oh, yeah! I love your kid too, Ana." Gael briefly looked at her to smile.
"Yeah..." Ana sighed, looking out the window.
"Okay... judging by that heavy sigh... I'm kinda getting it's an issue for you?" Is it really? Ana thought long and hard about itâ
"No... no, it's not."Â
"Hm... if you're sure. Though, I gotta tell you. Kids say whatever comes out of their mind all the timeâthey rarely think it through. Heck, I have patients nga na they tell me they love me even though ako yung dahilan ng pagsigaw nila because of needles!"
Ana chuckled, recalling the first time they met Gael. How Aki calmed down and was so enamored of her even when Gael rearranged her arm and made her cry so much.
"Yeah... Yeah. I don't have a problem with it Gael. Really." They both know Ana was not just convincing Gael, but her own self too.
"But promise to tell me when it becomes an issue for you?" Gael said after a while. The fact that there was no hint of annoyance in her tone, and she doesn't even ask Ana where all these is coming from, like she truly understands.
Oh, Gael.
"Your... closeness with Aki?" Ana clarified.
"Yeah..." Gael nodded.
"Aki adores you so much and she's happier when you came, Doc Pretty. I'd be evil if I say issue sa 'kin 'yon. But you know what I have problem about?"Â
Gael's smile which appeared upon her mention of "Doc Pretty" disappeared as soon as it came.
"What?" Gael asked hesitantly.
"Alam mong favorite niya penguin tas you'd go ahead and tell her that can be her pet?! It's bad enough she's relentless on getting a dog!" Ana exclaimed, suddenly getting a full laugh from Gael while keeping her eyes on the road.
Oh, so she's not really going to be apologetic about it?
"Yeah, sige. Go ahead, laugh. When she keeps me up later tonightâwhining, tatawagan kita until you answer para your ears would suffer with mine." Gael just kept laughing, shaking her head from time to time.
"You know what would fix that?" Gael told her as she rounded the corner leading to Ana's place.
"What?" Ana said with a sigh, expecting another tease from Gael.
"Zoo date tomorrow?" Gael offered, smiling as she finally looked at Ana after parking the car in front of the latter's place. "Aki would see all the animals she wants there, it would definitely lessen her... untamable energy on having pets."
How could she say no to Gael's fucking charming smile?
Â
Â
Gael answered the call on the second try. It was Ana's last attempt though, as she wasn't really serious when she said she's gonna call nonstop until Gael answers, as she knows the woman's probably on call.
It was a face time, just like how Aki demanded it to be, and they were greeted with a Gael on scrub suit. It was a bit different from the Doc Pretty they saw wearing a white coat.Â
Ana could tell by just looking at Gael's serious expression when she answeredâone that was replaced by an obvious forced smileâthat something happened, which made her feel guilty for even calling for the second time.
"Hi Ana," Gael greeted. Ana bit her lip to push back the sudden guilt and embarrassment.
"Hey Gael, is this a good time? Sorry, I called forâ"
"No! It's okay, it's okay. I'm glad you called. Ine-expect ko na rin, 'cause you said so kanina." Gael's smile was slowly becoming wider, reaching her eyes, and it was also easing the guilt in Ana.
"Sure ha?" Ana asked, turning to Aki to tell her to wait, as her child kept whispering that she wants to talk to Doc Pretty now.
"Yes, I'm sure! Besides, my shift's over. I'll just change and head home na rin," Gael said and judging by her moving background, it seemed as if the Doctor's walking around.
"Okayâ"
"Mommy, c'mon!" Aki whispered a bit too loudly.
"Is that Aki?" Gael asked as she entered a room and sat down. Ana was about to say yes, but Aki heard Gael loud and clear so she took over and showed herself to Gael.
"Hi Doc Pretty! Yes po, it's me! Are you still at work? Some kid broke their bone too? It's late! Are you goingâ"
"Aki, calm down," Ana said sternly. "One at a time." That earned a laugh from Gael.
"Ang dami mong energy this night time, Aki!" Gael said with a laugh. "I just finished work and I'm going home na after. Yeah, there's quite a lot of sick kids today..."
"I hope they feel well po, Doc Pretty! Mommy told me we're going to the zoo! I'm excited! We can take home lots of animalsâ"
"Hey, no! We're going to see lots of animals, baby. Not take home. No take home," Ana cut off. Gael biting her lip to not laugh was caught in the camera, making Ana glare at her.
"But, Mommy... Doc Pretty, please tell Mommy we have to take home at least one! Just one." Aki was holding up her index finger, showing it to the camera and to Ana as well.
"I think we can take home an animal if the zoo keepers would let us!" Gael said cheerfully, making Aki cheer loudly. If Gael was here, Ana would have strangled her already.
"Gael whatever-your-middle-name-is Avila, humanda ka sa 'kinâ"
"Don't mind Mommy, Doc Pretty. I'll save you from her," Aki said before going to jump off Ana's bed, heading to her room, yelling out a goodbye to Gael.
Ana yelled out a "be careful" before turning back to Gael, who's been waiting with a smile on her face. She looked like she was leaning back on her chair.
"Pasalamat ka you're not here. She's on sugar rush! Cla fed her with gummies. And you, you keep riling her up and making her hope na she can take home animals!" Ana exclaimed.
"Ana, has Aki ever been to a zoo?" Gael asked. Ana shook her head, as they didn't have time and Aki's school keeps going to museums and historical sites for their annual field trip.
"Figures! Trust me, when she gets to experience how smelly they can get, she won't kulit you anymore. I know how sensitive she can get on strong scents." Ana's heart fluttered at Gael's observation on Aki's tendencies.
"And if that wouldn't bother her? What then, huh?" Ana raised an eyebrow.
"Then I'll get her a penguin stuffed toy!" Gael smiled cheekily, making Ana roll her eyes. Gael tried and failed to hold her yawn, which made Ana check the time. It was 9 already, and she knows Gael still has to walk home... and she still has to force a sugar-induced Aki to sleep.
"Go home na, Gael," Ana said softly. Gael nodded with a smile, rubbing her forehead.
"Okay, yeah, I should. I'll go na. What time tomorrow, by the way?"Â
"We can go in early. 10?" Gael nodded, as she seemed like she was standing up.Â
"Okay, okay. Oh, before I turn this off, it's Eloise." Gael smiled, but Ana was confused.Â
Eloise? Who's Eloise? Did she miss something? What?
Gael must have caught her confused state because she laughed before explaining.
"My middle name, Ana. Sabi mo kanina hindi mo alam."Â
"Oh... Gael Eloise Avila..." Ana tested. "Pretty name," Ana continued before she could stop herself. That earned her a wide smile from Gael.
"Sus, pasimple ka pa. Thank you for calling me pretty," Gael said with a smirk. Ana rolled her eyes.
"Umuwi ka na at itulog mo na 'yan. Antok lang 'yan," Ana said jokingly, making Gael laugh again.
You might not have mentioned it, but I'm glad you're less stressed now, Gael.
"Alright. Bye, Ana," Gael said.
"Bye, Eloise."
Â
Â
Aki jumped up and down the minute they arrived, and she immediately listed out loud everything she wants to see.
"I wanna go to the parrot show po!" Aki squealed, pointing at the poster by the zoo's entrance.Â
"I guess we should get that package?" Gael asked Ana for confirmation. Ana just nodded, admittedly feeling slightly overwhelmed with the amount of people by the entrance buying tickets.
They fell in line and it was quite long. Thank God they went earlier than 10, or else they might be able to go in past lunch already.
"Doc Pretty, d'you know, we have a show and tell sa school?" Ana heard Aki tell Gael.
Wow, she told Gael before she even told me. Knowing Aki, this girl has a motive for doing so.
"Wow, that's exciting, huh?" Gael asked.
"Yeah! Pero Mommy went last last year, then Paps went last year, and this year dapat po si Ta-Ta Cla but she's a teacher too! We always see teachers na. I told my friends I know you Doc Pretty and they were so amazed I know a doctor, can you come po?" Ana rushed to tone down the slippery slope the conversation seems to be heading.
She doesn't want Gael to be forced to come 'cause she knows the doctor can't say no to Aki. It's enough that Gael drives them to Aki's school...
She's getting too involvedâ
No.
"Aki, Doc Pretty might be busy, okay? Why didn't you tell me this? Pwede naman ako ulitâ"
"Mommy, no offense po... Sara and I made a pact na we're gonna amaze everyone and bring superheroes for show and tell... you're..." Ana caught how Gael's eyes went bigâanticipating what Aki was about to say next.
"I'm what?" Ana asked her daughter with an eyebrow raised, crossing her arms. Aki bit her lip, looking at Doc Pretty for help, before looking at her Ana again.
"You're Mommy! You're a different hero... po." Aki smiled cheekily. Gael looked so proud at Aki's answer, and Ana had to bite her lip from smiling as well.
Maybe sometimes it's good Aki spends time with her witty titas.
"And Mommy, uulit na naman ikaw. It's not cool na. And Doc Pretty's a cool superhero! She saves kids! She's the perfect example!" Aki said, jumping at the balls of her feet.Â
"Okay... uh... let's not rush Doc Pretty to make a decision, okay?" Ana said, but both her and Gael knew she meant they have to talk about it without Aki. Gael nodded, smiling apologetically at Ana.
"Okay! But Doc Pretty, I'm telling you it's gonna be fun. I'll even share my seat with you 'cause you're special." It seemed as if Gael was a bit speechless at Aki's words and Ana sensed this. She's about to take overâshe knows Aki can be too much especially when it's early morning and she's at a hundred percent, but the zoo staff did the distraction for them, speaking over the megaphone to try and organize the line.
Thank you, Kuya.
Â
Â
Of course, despite it not being ideal for a continuous exploration, they visited the penguins first. Aki's wide smile and ear-piercing squeals when she finally saw a penguin made Ana's day.Â
What surprised Ana was the disposable camera suddenly hanging around Gael's neck. The minute Aki saw the penguins, Gael immediately pushed Ana and Aki to pose, and she snapped a picture.
"Tayo naman po, Doc Pretty! Mommy, mommy, ikaw naman mag-picture." Aki pushed Ana away.
The audacity of this girl. Nakakalimutan niya atang I'm the one who gave birth to her?!
Seems as if Gael caught on what Ana was thinking, as she was too amused while handing over the camera to Ana.
After they snapped a picture, Ana thought it was all over.
"Give me the camera, Mommy! Kayo naman po ni Doc Pretty." Aki didn't let her get in a word as the child snatched the camera from her.
Ana hesitantly walked closer to Gael, who was looking too amused for her own good. Ana stood close to her, just to appease Aki.
"Mommy, Doc Pretty, you're miles away from each other! You should hug, c'mon," Aki said loudly as she focused her one eye on the camera lens.Â
If Ana could sigh in annoyance without Gael hearing it, she would have. These quirks have her sisters written all over it.
"I guess we should hug daw. You okay with it?" It should be illegal to hear so close Gael's low register. Ana made it a point to focus on the camera as she felt Gael get near.
"Yeah, sure," was all Ana could say. Ana thought she for sure looked as stiff as a tree when she felt Gael wrap her left arm around her waist... and even leaned her head close to Ana's.
She smells sweet like candies but not to sweet, just the right amount and oh, dear lord.
"Say 'I love penguins!'" That seemed to be a needed relief to the pressure Ana was feeling. They laughed and followed Aki's command, with Ana loosening up a bit and leaning her head close to Gael's as well.Â
Aki finally snapped a picture and Ana thought of the outcome. She doesn't know if she wants it to look goodâfor documentation purposes, of courseâor badâas Gael would be the one to process these photos and see how fucking stiff she looked.
Â

Halfway through their stroll, Ana couldn't help the flutter she felt when Gael offered to carry a tired Aki. They were at the aquarium tunnel already, and Aki pointed out everything she wanted to see up close while resting her head on Gael's shoulder.
Yes, Ana took a picture of Gael and Aki with their backs on her as they stared at the creatures on the other side of the glass.Â
Yes, it's her wallpaper now. No, it wasn't because of Gael. It was because Aki looked so cute even though she has her back turned on Ana.
"Mommy, look at the sting ray! I got to touch that kanina!" Aki called for her after sipping her juice. Ana walked closer to the two, looking up slightly at her daughter as she's taller than Ana slightly, given Gael's height.
"Yeah, you did," Ana said with a smile.Â
"Are you okay carrying those?" Gael asked her with a frown, looking pointedly at Ana's huge bag containing Aki's things.
"I should be the one asking, Gael. Are you okay carrying this girl?" Ana poked at Aki's side, making the girl squeal in laughter.
"Yup, so okay!" Gael pinched Aki's cheek, making the girl squeal and squirm even more. If Ana could take pictures through her eyes, there'd be thousands of copies now.
"Doc Pretty, akala ko po tayo ang team? Don't team up with Mommy!" Aki pouted, and that's when Ana noticed the slight sticky coat on her daughter's cheeks. Gael said a light sorry to Aki, squeezing the girl gently.
"Wait, I'll wipe your cheeks, baby." Ana reached out to clean Aki's cheeks with wipes.
"El? Is that you?"
"Jia?" Ana's eyes landed on Gael when she suddenly spoke. She realized it was Gael the stranger behind her was talking to.
El?
Ana stepped back and turned to look at the woman. She kept a poker face on, but she couldn't help but notice how fucking beautiful she looked. Her smile was so perfect, her hair was in perfect curls.
Seriously.
Okay, nope. She's not gonna mind the hot feeling that suddenly spread through her stomach.
"Ikaw nga! How have you been? Last time I heard you're out of the country. It's been years!" The woman Gael called "Jia" said energetically.
"Yeah, I'm back... for good. And doing great. How 'bout you?" Gael said, and again, no. Ana's not satisfied that Gael's tone was quiet and forced.
"I'm doing good rin! Finally got to do the business I've been telling you about before. Grabe, of all the places we'll see each other, dito pa talaga... is this your family na?" The Jia girl turned to Aki then to Ana with a smile.
Smile smile ka diyan. Ang daldal mo.
"Oh! I... umâ"
"Hi, I'm Ana." Ana internally slapped herself for cutting Gael. She doesn't know what came over her, why she cut Gael off, why she fucking did itâ
Yeah, ang annoying lang kasi nitong Jia.
The Jia girl shook her outstretched hand.Â
"I'm Jia!" Ana nodded and gave a small smile.
Yeah, I know, Gael mentioned your name. I'm not stupid.
"And who is this beautiful girl?" Jia asked, directing her look at Aki. Ana avoided Gael's questioning stare at her.
"Hello po, I'm Aki." Aki waved shyly and that averted Gael's focus from Ana to Aki, with Gael smiling adorably.
"Hi, Miss Aki! You're so adorable! And you have such a beautiful name. Wow, you really did name your daughter 'Aki,' huh, El?" Ana frowned at Jia's comment.Â
Before anyone could say anything further, Jia's phone chimed.
"Oh shocks, I have to go na. Listen, here's my number, we have to catch up sometime, okay? It's been so long! It's nice to meet you Ana and Miss Aki." Jia waved at them one last time before rushing away.
Ana risked looking at Gael, who was staring at Jia's retreating back.
"Who's that?" Ana asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
What she meant to ask was: who's that? How did you know her? How did you two meet? How long did you know her? 'El'? She talked to you about her business plan even though you're a doctor? Why does she know what you want to name your future child?
... or something along those lines.
"Oh, that's... Jia," Gael trailed off.
"Wow, thanks for clearing that up. I actually didn't quite catch thatâher name's Jia pala? Did I get that right, El?" Ana said sarcastically, making Gael roll her eyes at her and raise an eyebrow.
Suck it up, Ana. You're sounding like a jealous girlfriendâwhich you are not!
"Yes, Mommy. Her name's Jia daw po. Is she your friend, Doc Pretty?" Aki said, albeit quite impatiently. Gael snickered at Ana, obviously amused at how Aki overpassed Ana's sarcastic streak.
"Yup, used to be close with her before. She's friends with your Ta-ta Cla too, Aki."Â
Oh, there's one person I could ask that could give me clear answers.
"Close?" Ana asked. Gael narrowed her eyes at Ana.
"You're suspiciously curious..." She said slowly. Ana snorted and averted her gaze, trying to hide from Gael as she knows she's too obvious when she's feeling guilty.
"I, for one, am just asking because it would be good for me to know a bit about the person who just interacted with my daughter. Thank you very much," Ana said a bit snottily, watching as Gael set Aki down after the child kept squirming.
"Right... for Aki." Ana nodded even though she caught on that Gael's not quite believing her. She's gonna pretend she didn't catch that tone.
"Yup, for Aki." They both kept their eyes on Aki as she regained her energy, watching the fish that swam in front of her and pointing them out to them.
"She's my ex, Ana," Gael said after a while beside her. Ana almost had a whiplash as she turned to look at Gael.
"Oh, um... that's..."Â
If Ana had doubts that Gael's into girls... here's her answer.
"That's what?" Gael prompted, raising an eyebrow at her. Ana shook her head and broke their eye contact, looking at Aki once again.
"Nothing. Never mind," Ana dismissed and she knows Gael's feeling lost with her.
Bakit ba kasi nangsisira ng araw?
"Oh... kayâ"
"So, when are you two going to catch up?" Ana asked before she could stop herself.
Why the fuck does my mouth have total control of my body?
"We literally just met again kanina after yearsâa decade actually, so obviously that's yet to be decided. Besides, 'di naman 'yon sure given our schedules. She might have invited out of courtesy. What's the matter with you?" Gael asked her.
"Me? Nothing! Why'd you ask that? I'm having fun. I'm good. Just like how I was kanina." Ana plastered a wide smile on her face, looking at Gael, who she briefly noticed was studying her closely.
"If you're sure." Gael said slowly. "So... do you think I should call her?"Â
Ana huffed.Â
Gawin mo gusto mo, Gael Eloise.
"Bakit mo 'ko tinatanong?" Ana said snippily. Â
"I mean, nothing. Can't decide eh. Just want your opinion...?" Gael said airily. Ana didn't dare cast her a glance, walking closer to Aki. She knows Gael followed her.
"So...?" Gael asked again.
"Why'd you keep asking me? Call her! Invite her for coffee! Get back together for all I care." Okay... the last one was too much.Â
Fuck.
"Are you... are you jealous, Ana?" Gael asked, and what Ana hates the most was her teasing tone.
You're gonna stand your ground, Ana.Â
So she glared at Gael.
"Aren't you too full of yourself, El?" Ana said sarcastically again. Instead of being pissed like her, Gael laughed.
Gael just laughed at her... while she's feeling this pissed.Â
Why was she pissed? No, that's a thought to be saved for later, something that will keep her up all night.
"Pamilyado na 'yon, Ana. A year after we broke up, she got married. She has two kids, Cla's even the Ninang of her second child," Gael explained with a smile.
Bobo mo, Ana.
"You didn't have to explain," Ana said quietly, obviously more calm than before. Gael still had a smirk on her face, raising an eyebrow at Ana.
"Oh... I didn't have to, huh?" Gael asked, as she took Aki's hand and they walked to the end of the tunnel.
"Yup," Ana said, taking Aki's other hand as the child kept swinging between them.Â
"If you say so..." Gael said, sounding too smug. Nope, she's not gonna look at Gael as the embarrassment was slowly eating her body away.
"Ready for the show, Aki?" Gael asked cheerfully.
"Hell yeah!" Aki exclaimed.
"Aki!" Ana and Gael said sternly.
Â
Â
Ana carried a sleeping Aki while Gael carried the bags and the keys. She opened the door, and Ana felt Gael lightly place her hand on her lower back, letting her walk in first while supporting her.
That simple gesture made the butterflies come alive again.
"I'll just settle Aki down sa room niya," Ana said in a whisper and Gael nodded.
When she came back, Gael stood up from the sofa to meet her halfway.
"Didn't even wake up, kahit pinaltan ko ng clothes," Gael laughed.
"She's exhausted... did you have fun?" Gael asked.
"Loads of fun. Alam mo yung highlight of my day?" Ana asked.
"Hmm?"
"When Aki said she doesn't need a penguin here anymore," Ana said cheekily, making Gael laugh again.Â
"I told you, this is all she needs." Gael smiled, looking around before pulling out her keys.
"I should goâ"
"Gael, about the show and tell..." They both said at the same time.
"Oh yeah, you should..." Ana said immediately.
"No, what about it?" Gael asked softly.
"Uh... can I think about it first?" Ana asked hesitantly. "It's a pretty big... thing and I don't know..."
"Ana, it's alright with me, hm? I understand, Aki first. And remember, you have to let me know if everything's too much," Gael assured her. Ana couldn't say anything as for some reason, she feels so cared for with Gael saying all these things in such a soft voice. "You lead and I'll follow."
"Okay... okay." Ana nodded. Gael smiled reassuringly.
"I have to go..." Ana nodded again, not trusting herself to say anything more about it in the meantime. She walked Gael to the door.
"Ingat. Please text me when you get home." Gael mock saluted her as she walked away, making Ana roll her eyes.
"Bye, Ana."
"Bye, El." Ana laughed and shook her head when Gael mouthed "selos" at her.
Chapter 5: Walking Perfection

Is this an update? Yeah... yeah. đ±
Chapter Text
Oh wow, alone. Again.
This time, it wasn't unexpected for Ana. It's Sav's day with Aki, something her best friend insisted on doing once a month as Aki's "second mom." While Ana and Sav's love language to each other is sarcasm and blunt words, Ana made sure Sav knows how much she appreciates her for loving Aki so damn much.
Though, it was one way for Sav to have an excuse on shopping excessively. (All for Aki!)
Ana was fastening her shoe lacesâshe's been dying to jog in her usual route as it's been a week since she last had the free time to do that. It's been long overdue.
But right before she could go out of her door, her phone rang.
Gael.
Of course, she's gonna answerâbut not too eagerly. She waited for the second ring before answering, as she didn't want Gael to have the impression that Ana's going to answer her in a heartbeat.
There's no issue there, though. It's just Ana and her losing battle to her ego for years now.
"Ana, hi! Are you busy?" Gael sounded a bit breathless, making Ana frown. She's reminded once again of the time Gael was sick, and how her breathing didn't sit right with her. Is she sick again?
"Hi, Gael. Uh, no... okay ka lang? You sound out of breath," Ana said, not even bothering to hide the worry in her tone.
"Thanks to you!" Gael said, though Ana could hear the woman smiling as she said that, calming her down a bit.
"Me?!" Ana asked.
"Took your advice, nag-jog ako this morning 'cause I'm suddenly free for the day," Gael said with a chuckle.
Ana tried to quell the excitement that ran through her the minute Gael told her what she's doing. She could just imagine running with her...
Kinikilig ka sa pag-daydream mo na naman, Ana.
"How's it?" Ana resorted to those two words, trying her best to sound chill when she's anything but.
"Good, good. Also tried the breathing technique you told me... not sure if it helps but then again, I just started joggingâ"
"Judging by how you're breathing right now, I don't think you're doing it correctly," Ana lightly teased.
"Ha-ha. Anyway, that's not why I called. So, while I was jogging, I passed by this cute cafe tapos may kid spot! I immediately thought of Aki. She'd love it there, I'm sureâare you guys free this afternoon?"Â
Seems as if Gael had another reason to be breathless, with how fast she said those words.
"Uminom ka ba ng red bull, Gael? Kasi sinasabi ko sayo, 'wag ka uminom ng energy drink. You're a doctor, you should know this!" Ana was half teasing and half reminding 'cause it's not far from impossible for Gael to have consumed an energy drink with how unnaturally energetic she sounded.
"What?! Ang random naman, Ana. But I didn't drink... what... anyway, you haven't answered my question yet!" Gael stuttered out, confusion evident in her voice.
"I was just asking kasi you're saying a hundred words per minute which is so unusualâ"
"I was just excited! The cafe was so cute, Aki would love it for sure. But you know what, since you're stalling, nevermiâ"
"No, wait! Sorry na," Ana exclaimed with a chuckle. "Aki's with Sav today eh. And I was just going out for a jog before you called. Okay lang if ako langâ"
"Oh! That's perfect too! Tara? Or, wait, I'm not forcing you or anything, ha? Just... if you want," Gael rushed.
Who in their right mind would let this pass?
Â
Â
"So...? Kumusta ang jog?" Ana smiled, excited to hear all about Gael's first physical activityâif that's even right, considering how Cla always mentions how Gael's just cooped up in her place all day long if she's not on duty.
"It's a bit... tiring. But I think it's something na uulitin ko... after a couple of days or week... s." Ana rolled her eyes as Gael smiled at her cheekily. "I could see why you love it though. Keeps your mind off of... things."
"Yeah. It does." Ana nodded as she stared at Gael a bit too curiously. She's been wanting for days now to ask how Gael is despite seeing her even more frequently than Cla (as Cla never forgets to remind her). But she still couldn't gauge Gael that well, if asking her if she's alright or anything remotely close to that topic would make the doctor close off and shy away.
It might be selfish, but Ana knows asking more about Gael to Gael and crossing that line would admit that thisâwhatever this is they have going onâis more real than she would like herself to believe.Â
She's not ready to face the music just yet.
Doesn't mean she doesn't want it to be real, though.
What does "real" even mean?
"So! Aki's with your..."
"My best friendâactually, my only friendâ"
"That's..." Ana hummed, nodding, confirming Gael's thoughts. Usually, she doesn't want pity from people after they find out she only has one friend... and Ana gets too defensive over it (especially to her nosy coworkers whenever she goes onsite).
But when it comes to Gael... she somehow feels unjudged and ready to admit the saddest and rawest parts of her.
Those eyes should be illegal.
"That's not true. Am I not your friend?" Gael raised an eyebrow. Ana's eyes grew wide, her heart suddenly jumping from her chest.
Why don't you think your words through, Ana?!
She might have looked like a floundering fish, what with how Gael suddenly laughed.Â
"It's okay if you don't see me as a friend..." Gael shrugged. It went over Ana's head that Gael seemed so suspiciously nonchalant about it, as she's mid panicking on how to take back her words.
She doesn't want Gael to get the wrong idea that all these times they're spending together means nothing to her. That's the least of the things she want.
"But is there any chance you could see me as more than your friend...?" Gael asked slowly, looking at Ana intensely.
The sound in the cafeâeven if it was the softest fucking piano cover of whatever familiar song it was that Ana couldn't identify for the life of herâgot muted as she registered Gael's words. It seems to have been replaced by a constant ringing. Her eyes seemed to have unfocused, brain literally short circuiting as Gael's eyes seem to be piercing right through her after asking that question.
Again, those eyes should be illegal.
"I think I'm going crazy, this is too much all at once... nanaginip ba ako?" Ana frowned, muttering as she keeps shaking her head.
She suddenly felt a hand on top of hers, and found that Gael was reaching over from the other side of the table, slightly leaning closer to her.
"Hey, Ana..." Ana stared into Gael's eyes. She feels lightheaded but not enough to faint. "Okay ka lang?"
"Uh... yeah... sorry, parang nag-space out ako. I thought I heard you askâ"
"That if it's possible we could be more than friends? Na... that... that hypothetical question I asked you before... isn't so hypothetical anymore?" If Ana sported a panic-stricken look... then she definitely is feeling that.
"Gael... you know..." Ana felt as if everything in her mouth is dry. If everything is just rainbows and sunshine, she would have said yes to Gael in a heartbeat. The girl's a walking perfection. And if she's just a bit more confident than she is right now, a bit less insecure as Aki's single mom, maybe she would have seen immediately how it's more harmless to date Gael than what her fears want her to believe.
Ana looked at Gael's hand still resting in top of hers. She couldn't get over how soft it felt, and she even dared go as far as turning her hand over to actually hold Gael's.
Staring at their hands seem less scary than staring at Gael's hopeful eyes. Makes it a bit easier to say this...
"I'm still not ready. To date... in general." Ana sighed, actually relieved after voicing that out. It's an unspoken understanding for her and her family that Aki's father ruined her and Ana can take her sweet time dipping her toes in the dating scene again. Getting to voice it out loud, the very first time, seems like a huge weight off her chest.
"I just know, I'm so sure, if I even say yes, I'd just ruin... this. What we have. And I don't want to do that, you know?" Ana finally dragged her eyes back to Gael, fully expecting a hardened look at the rejection.
Instead, all she saw was a sincere smile. And it tugged her heart in the best way.
"You're so perfect... that I'm so scared. So scared to try." Ana knew it sounded so flawed, yet she can't even form the best wordsâtoo cautious to let down Gael the least hurtful way. She just hopes that her tight grip on Gael's hand fills in on the right words she kept missing.Â
"I'm far from perfect, Ana," Gael said with a hesitant smile.
"You are. You're so good with Aki... with me. And I fucking hate that my brain kept reminding me of how good it was too... before, with Aki's father." Ana paused, gauging Gael's reaction at the mention of Aki's father. The woman seemed to have no problem with it, giving her an encouraging nod.
"Ang... perfect ng relationship naminâniya... we were so young and I thought he's the one. He's the perfect guy. We started living together, you know? Try muna if okay... our future was plannedâand we're both so happy with it. Same goals, same... mindset, same everything. The perfect coupleâas Mari would say." Ana chuckled bitterly, remembering how it was one of Mari's insecurities before and the cause of their great fight. She and Cla seemed to have all the troubles and here was Ana and Stefan, flaunting their all-too-perfect relationship, doing everything right.Â
"Then I got pregnant with Aki. With how I knew him... sinabi ko sa kanya agad, thinking it's gonna be... that he's gonna be there... 'cause it was nowhere near our plans that time. He's gone the next day. Took our shared funds with him, leases, our friendsâeverything. Never saw him again."
Should she have said all of that? She just kept going with no way of stopping...
Ana could only bow her head after to hide the lone tear that escaped from her eyes. Was her explanation enough? Did she successfully drive Gael away? How is she gonna tell Aki all this?Â
This. This is exactly why she doesn't want to get tangled with anyone romantically. The complications, the what-ifs, the constant internal battles. It doesn't help that she's got a few too many demons within her to fight.
"Ana..." Ana felt it all at onceâGael's hand squeezing hers, thumb drawing soft circles on her knuckles. Then she felt a hand on her chin, gently pushing her face up. Gael gently wiped her cheeks with the tissue she was holding.
"Thank you for sharing that... I know hindi 'yon madali para sayo. I understand, okay? Don't get too worried, hm?" Gael said softly to her. "And I'm sorry that happened. God... you and Aki don't deserve that... guy..." Gael sighed heavily, and it was too obvious she wanted to call Aki's father something else.
"I'm sorry, Gael." And she's sorry to herself too. Because Gael was perfectâtoo perfect, and anyone would just be lucky to be her partner. She's already lucky to just have her in her and Aki's life.
Then what's stopping you?Â
"I just... if I could... if I could save Aki from all the pain in the world, I would, without a doubt. No questions asked. And me dating, that's just a given. If it ends up failing and me hurting, madadamay din si Aki. I don't want her to feel unnecessary painâshe's been through enough."
"And again, I understand that, Ana. Don't say sorry, okay? I just shoot my shotâgod knows I should do it more often, and I missed. No hard feelings."Â
Just take everything back and say yes, Ana.
"Yeah..." was what Ana could only say instead.
"I just hope... I hope na you don't deprive yourself of getting what you want just because you think it would hurt Aki...? It sounds selfishâah, gosh." Gael chuckled apologetically. "What I mean to say is, you deserve to feel happiness with no reservations and no hold backs. We're all here to catch you and Aki if you fall down trying."
Ana bit her lip to stop herself from crying even more. That feeling seems to be the life of her dreamsâsomething too far fetched for her to experience.
She just nodded.
"See? You're so perfect... I... I hope we could still be friends? It's really nice to have two friendsâ"
"Ana, you'll never be able to get rid of me even if you try," Gael said cheekily, squeezing her hand again. As if to reassure her again that everything's good.
She just hopes that's true.
Â
Â
"Mommy... mommy, have you called Doc Pretty na? Sa Friday na po yung show and tell!" Aki asked for the thousandth time.
How could Ana tell her daughter that she's too shy to call Gael when she hadn't heard from the woman since that day in the cafe? The only time they got to talk was when the woman said a thousand sorry's after not picking them up two days in a row because she was too busy.
Other than that, it's a quiet line between them.
There's got to be a kid version to that explanation.
"Honey, baka Doc Pretty's busy kasi..." or avoiding me, more likely.Â
"But she promised me she'll come!" She promised me everything's alright with us yet here we are.
"Did she now?" Ana raised an eyebrow, knowing that Gael wouldn't just go over a boundary she just set before when it comes to Aki. Her daughter pouted and crossed her arms.
"Not yet," Aki grumbled and Ana did her best not to laugh.
"Bakit ba ayaw mo tawagan, Ana?" Mari asked suddenly from her spot on the other end of the couch.Â
They were having their biweekly dinner at her parent's house and the entire time, all Aki could talk about was Gael attending her show and tell.
"Bakit kaya, 'no?" Cla said and Ana caught the slight teasing tone Cla had. She looked at the woman with narrowed eyes, and she got a raised eyebrow in return.Â
Of course she fucking knows what happened.
Cla, Gael, and Masie all give off reserved vibes that no one would expect that they tell each other every-fucking-thing.
"Tawagan mo na, Te. Rinding rindi na ko kay Aki. Tsaka halos maging magkamuka na kayo ni Ate Gael dahil lagi kayo magkasama tas mahihiya ka pa..." Sienna suddenly said, throwing herself on the space between her and Mari.
"Oo nga, lagi kayong magkasama. Baka mamaya jowa mo na 'yon, 'di ka pa nagsasabi ah," Mari said haughtily.
"Ta-Ta Mimi, Mommy's too scared to ask Doc Pretty po to be her jowaâ"
"Aki!" Ana finally exclaimed, making all her sisters laugh.
"It's true, Mommy! Do you want me to ask for you? Just say the word..." Aki said.
"Adult conversation, okay?" Ana said sternly.
"Tamo, ending pa niyan si Aki magtatanong kay Gaelâ" Mari whispered to Cla, but Ana heard it loud and clear.
"I can hear you, Mari," Ana deadpanned.
"I can hear you, Mari," Mari mocked.
"Are you a child?!" Ana.
"Are you a child?!" Mari.
"Mommy, there's nothing wrong with being a child," Aki said in a scolding tone, mimicking Ana previously stern voice.
"That's right! Give Ta-Ta Mimi a hug nga, Aki." Mari opened her arms, gesturing for Aki to come closer to which the child did.
"Ugh, sumasakit ulo ko sa inyo!" Ana exclaimed and stood up to walk out.
"Drama," Sienna quipped while typing away in her phone. Everyone in the room knowsâjudging by how Sienna was smilingâshe's talking to her "best friend" Jess.
Â
Cla caught up with her by the kitchen, as Ana tried to busy herself with anything. She did tell Gael she'll think the show and tell through, and she hasn't done some thinking.
And now, they haven't talked to each other for days and Ana's worried Gael's not gonna come through. Yeah, she promised they're okayâbut is Gael really? After being turned down by Ana?
She'd understand if Gael avoids her.
But how would she explain that to Aki?
See? This is the exact complication she's been thinking about.
"Nahihiya si Gael sayo," Cla suddenly said from beside her. Ana almost got a whiplash as she turned to Cla.
"What?!"
"Hmm... well, she asked you out for a date then na-turn down? Nag-confess pero na-basted? Kahit ako mahihiya magpakita afterâ" Cla listed out.
"Sabi niya okay kami..." Ana trailed off.
"No doubt. Pero to reach out first after being rejected? May pride din naman si Gael kahit papaano. As much as you think na perfect si Gaelâ"Â
"Lahat ba sinasabi niyo sa isa't isa? Seriously?" Ana exclaimed, horrified that Cla knows what she told Gael.
"Hindi naman lahat..." Cla trailed off, avoiding her eyes. Ana glared at her sister-in-law. "But that's beside the point. As I was saying, may imperfections rin si Gael, Ana. Like being too... stupid and whipped when she likes somebody. Especially sayo."
Ana frowned.
"Just be the one to call her firstâsasagot 'yon agad. Ikaw pa, sobrang lakas niyo do'n ni Aki." Cla left the kitchen while biting an apple, leaving Ana with her thoughts.
Â
"Mommy, can I call Doc Pretty instead? I'll be the one to ask na," Aki said, not letting everyone miss her impatience.
Ana went back to the living room after being kicked out by her mom for being a distraction in the kitchen.
"I'll ask," Ana said with pursed lips, glaring at all the other girls in the room when they all cheered. Ana went out of the side door to not let them hear what she have to say to Gael... if the doctor even answers her call.
On the second ring... she did. Just like what Cla said... huh.
"Hi, Ana!" Gael sounded out of breath again.
"Hi, Gael... jogging again?" Ana asked, frowning at the dark afternoon clouds.
"Ah... nope. Still got sore calves from that! Been walking dito sa hospital for hours now. I... have a tough case and I just got my break," Gael explainedâshe didn't have to yet she did.
Damn, Ana. This is what you keep letting go all because you're scared.
"What's up? Sorry ulit na 'di ko kayo nahatid ni Aki, ah. Bawi ako next week!" Gael said again.
"Gael, really, it's nothing. Are you doing good? Don't tire yourself too much... and hindi mo kailangan bumawi, you're doing a lotâ"
"Ana, it's really okay with me, I want to do that. Unless, ayaw mo... na?" Gael's voice got quieter at the end. Ana hates how this hesitancy of spending time with them resurfaced to Gael again. It doesn't take a genius to know that this is among the repercussions of their cafe situation.
"I have no problem with that! I'm more worried na hassle para sayâ"
"And I already told you it's not," Gael said lightly.
"Okay."
"Okay."
There was a pause before Ana remembered why she called.
"Oh! Why I calledâ"
"And here I was, thinking you just wanted to hear my voice..." Gael teased. "I mean, I'm more than okay with that."Â
"Ewan ko sayo, Gael." Ana rolled her eyes even though the woman from the other end of the line couldn't see that. She still heard a laugh and god, did it wake up the butterflies in her stomach.
"I... I thought about the show and tell, remember? The school event Aki mentioned back in the zoo... Aki's been asking me to ask you nonstop. Magiging kontrabida lang ako if I say no... are you okay to come? This Friday?" Ana rushed out in one breath.
"Ana, slow down. Uminom ka ba ng red bull? 'Cause you know that's bad for your health, right? Trust me, I'm a doctorâ"
"I'm gonna hang up, Gael," Ana threatened, though she really wasn't in the right place to threaten hanging up the callâshe's the one asking a favor here.
"I'm just teasing! Hindi ka naman mabiro. I'll be there, Ana," Gael said sweetlyâwhich was the best version of her voice. Ana was swooning and she thanked the heavens Gael couldn't see her.
"Thank you, really..."
"Well, it's for Aki..." Gael said matter of factly.
Right, for Aki.
