Chapter 1: A Human in Spooky Academy?

Chapter Text

Disclaimer: This story works best if you know the characters from Monster Prom! You can find pictures and their respective lore on their fandom wiki! Thanks for reading my self indulgent work!

As my classmates freed me from my totem for the first Monster Prom, I remember I saw someone else in that purple void with me. At first, I thought he might be a humansona from my imagination. But now, I know he’s real. Because he just plopped out of a portal right in front of Spooky Academy. None of us knew how to react to a real full human, they’ve only ever rarely crossed over into our world. I knew there was something special about him though, considering he found his way into my void. With a big smile on my face, I went to approach him, but he was terrified as the other students stared at him with amusement. Principal Giant Spider ushered everyone away, approaching the human. The human reacted in a way you might have expected. By screaming and running away. Eventually my friend Scott caught him, because dogs love to chase, and he was able to be calmed down. His name is Tristo… and this is my story with him. Me of course being everyone's favorite trans eldritch girl Zoe! I’ll let him talk now, see you guys inside!

This can’t be real… Monster Prom was just a game. I adored these characters but seeing them in the flesh is something entirely different. Though Zoe was my favorite character, staring into multiple eyes and mouths is definitely a harrowing experience. I know things about these characters… people… monsters? There have been countless iterations of them though and I don’t wanna freak them out or break their brains. This is my new existence now, and well… Zoe does seem nice enough. She’s been really panning out the bad interactions I have with everyone else. I just hope I can survive in this new world. And I wish the others wouldn’t stare at me so much.

Zoe stared as Tristo looked down at his desk, as if afraid looking up would be his end. She rested her head on her tentacle as Ms. Feratu goes on about whatever she does in monster biology. Zoe wanted to sit next to him, but Scott had insisted he be close to learn his scent, and on Tristo’s other end was Vera. Always scheming some kind of money making opportunity, Vera knew anything human related would make a ton of money. Lucky for him, he’s protected by Principal Giant Spider, who says having a human “exchange” student makes Spooky Academy look better to the board. As far as she knew, Tristo hadn’t spoken to any of the other monsters besides Scott. Though she did hear something about Polly offering to make him a ghost to fit in better, and that Liam gave him a pair of his glasses. Lucky enough they had the same prescription.

“Zoe! Please pay attention, otherwise you’re about to miss the whole section on werewolf adrenal glands!” Ms. Feratu called out.

Zoe snapped her head forward and kept staring at Ms. Feratu, all the while the eye on her. Leaning down on her tentacle however, the eye on her chest trailed to Tristo. He definitely wouldn’t survive a fight against most of the monsters in Spooky Academy, he was skinny with long brown hair and bright blue eyes. Almost looked like he could be an elf from D&D, if an elf could also look like a little nerdy guy. He pushed up Liam’s spare glasses, finally daring to look around himself. He looked like a wet cat, avoiding eye contact with everyone as he scanned his surroundings. Until he met the gaze of Zoe's eye on her chest. The eye widened in surprise as it suddenly found his attention. She watched as Tristo turned back, his lips recoiling into his own mouth as he tried now to focus forward on Ms. Feratu’s lecture. Scott tilted his large furry head.

“Hey bro, you look a little pale! I’m sorry about chasing you earlier-”

“It’s okay Scott really.” Tristo said in a hushed tone. Scott let out a small gasp in response, and Tristo turned to him with concern.

“You remembered my name!”

“Oh uh yeah I guess I did.”

“I think we’re gonna be best bros. We’re gonna have a blast together this year, and look I’ve got your back if you ever need it.”

“Thanks Scott, that’s really nice. You’re the best.” Tristo said, his expression brightening a little.

“Really!?” Scott yelled, his voice carrying throughout the whole classroom, drawing everyone’s attention. Tristo and Scott sat stunned, and a few in the class including Zoe giggled. Ms. Feratu was less than amused, as she pointed at the two boys.

“Tristo, Scott. Since the two of you can’t keep quiet, you’ll be in detention all evening.”

“Aw but Ms. F, its Tristo’s first day. You can’t-”

“I can, and Tristo will be held to the same standard as every other Spooky Academy student.”

Tristo and Scott both sunk into their seats as Ms. Feratu resumed her lecture. Zoe rubbed her chin with her tentacle as she thought to herself.

If I get detention it could be a good chance to talk to him about what I saw from inside the totem… Zoe stands up from her desk and walks over to the window of the dim room.

“Zoe what are you doing?” Ms. Feratu asked.

“It’s a little dark here, I could use some light.” Zoe said, as she pulled the blinds up. Contrary to popular belief, most vampires are fine in sunlight, but some do break out in bad acne due to their allergy. As the light runs over Ms. Feratu’s skin, acne immediately begins to tinge her skin, and she stares at Zoe with a blank expression.

“Well now I need to take care of my skin tonight. Detention for you as well Zoe.”

“Sorry Ms. Feratu.” Zoe said, sitting down with a slight smile and snicker. The others in the classroom found it harder to pay attention to Ms. Feratu for the rest of the lecture with half her body erupted in particularly nasty pimples.

“And I had a date tonight…” Ms. Feratu mumbles to herself. Now Zoe would need to just get rid of Scott during detention. Then she could ask Tristo what he remembers. Tristo’s head sinks into his desk as he thinks about how he’s going to get through detention with Scott and Zoe. What he doesn’t realize is just how kooky the rest of the school day is going to be before getting there. With lunch up next, would Tristo be able to find something normal to eat? And who will he sit with?”
