Chapter Text
Kelly Severide always knew there was only one Omega for him. He’s known since elementary school, way before his Alpha senses were even online. The very second his green eyes met sweet baby blue, he was hooked.
Sure, he wasn’t sure if Matt was an Omega at the time, but there was no way that Kelly would accept anyone else. Matt was meant to be his, and that’s all that was to it.
That same day, he introduced himself to the shy Omega.
God , Matt had been so shy back then. Very hesitant in making eye contact beyond one second. He’d flinch away from loud noises and kept to himself. As a snot-nosed kid, Kelly didn’t understand that the bruises he saw on Matt came from the Casey sire and dam. Nah, he thought Matt got them from playing. It’s how Kelly got his, afterall.
But then they were in middle school and a side comment from Andy made Kelly actually think . From then on, he kept an eye on his Omega. Was Kelly over protective of Matt?
Yes.
No one at school dared to mess with Matt. Well, Andy did. But that was only as a friend and Kelly gave him more leeway than others to tease Matt. Though if Andy ever took it too far, Kelly didn’t hesitate to growl and make the Beta back off.
At the tender age of thirteen years old, Kelly’s Alpha senses came online. He was an early bloomer, but he was also quick to control his urges and senses. Kelly suspected it was because he’s had his Omega around him for years by then.
About two years later, Kelly scented Matt’s Omega scent. It was cinnamon spiced vanilla. Kelly loved nosing at Matt’s neck gland to the Omega’s amusement. Matt would protest every time the Alpha would pull the blonde into his lap so he could breathe in the scent from the source.
The first time, Kelly asked Matt if he really didn’t like it. Matt responded with a blush and shaking his head. The blonde Omega loved that his Alpha enjoyed his scent, he was just shy.
Kelly hoped that with his blatant scenting and public displays of possessiveness, whoever was causing the bruises would back off.
But the bruises were still showing up. He’d been stumped for another year until he saw something that made him go feral.
They were sixteen years old when he saw his Omega’s sire raise his hand and smack Matt across the face. That was the first time Kelly went feral.
He pushed the older Alpha off of Matt, snarling at the man to back the fuck off . Kelly was ready to draw blood. No one was allowed to touch his mate.
It was the soft touch on his back that had him calming down. The red faded from his green eyes and his posturing lessened. Kelly refused to turn his back on the older Alpha, but he did tell the man if he ever found another bruise on Matt he was going straight to the police.
The older Alpha scoffed, saying who would believe some punk kid?
Kelly grinned meanly, pointing out that if they wouldn’t believe him, he could always get his dad, a respected Captain in the Chicago Fire Department to say something.
He may not be a fan of his own sire, but at least Benny always stood up for him.
They were sixteen years old when Kelly and Matt started courting. It was everything they both wanted.
Kelly didn’t even care that he was showing off a softer, sweeter side whenever Matt was around. This was his Omega, of course he’d be soft and sweet with him. Anyone else who thought it made him a weaker Alpha easily learned that wasn’t the case.
The only thing that was missing was their mate bond. They were waiting until they were eighteen, but it was inevitable. Kelly knew only one Omega was the other half of his soul and it was Matthew Casey.
But then, because the universe was a bitch , Kelly was shipped off to the Navy.
“You need to learn what it means to be disciplined, Kelly.”
That’s what Benny said after picking Kelly up from the local precinct. Kelly wasn’t processed, thanks to Benny’s connections. But this also wasn’t the first time Kelly was being picked up after being arrested for fighting.
Kelly never started the fights, but he made damn sure to finish them.
“So you’re forcing me to enlist?”
“What else can I do, Kelly! You’re not giving me much of a choice! Your mot-
“ Don’t ,” growled Kelly, eyes flashing. “You don’t get to bring her into this.”
Benny flashed his eyes back. “This! This is exactly what I mean! You need to learn to control yourself, Kelly. Or you’re going to hurt someone.”
Scoffing, Kelly shook his head. “I’m not the one who starts the fight.”
“But you make sure to finish them, right?” Benny ran a hand through his hair, messing the usually well put-together hair. “Kelly. That’s no way to live. What if you hurt Matt?”
Kelly’s growl shook the car at the mere implication he could hurt his Omega. “Don’t start being a hypocrite now, Benny.”
Yet, no matter how much Kelly argued, his sire wouldn’t budge. The day before he turned eighteen, Kelly told Matt.
“You’re what ?”
Kelly sighed, cupping a soft cheek. He watched as Matt’s face paled. “I’m enlisting.”
“B-But!” Matt’s baby blue eyes that never failed to pull him in, pleaded. “W-what about u-us?”
“That’s not changing, baby. You know you’re it for me.” Kelly bent down and rested his forehead on Matt’s. He’s always adored that Matt didn’t take after other Omegas when it comes to height. Matt wasn’t tall, but he wasn’t short either. Kelly still held a few inches over Matt, and it was perfect for them. “You’re the only one who holds my heart.”
A hand smaller than his own raised and laid softly on Kelly’s chest. “But…you’re leaving me.”
“I have no choice.”
“You always have a choice, Alpha.”
Kelly didn’t respond verbally. Instead, he pulled Matt flush against him with a single arm and claimed his soft lips.
That night, they shared a night together. They were supposed to wait until they were both eighteen, but a love like theirs was desperate. It was unstoppable.
The following morning, they wore each other’s marks. It was probably the only reason that kept Kelly calm as his dad took him to the local Navy office and met his recruiter. The paperwork was done in under an hour. He was given his report date for Basic Training, a hand shake, and a ‘welcome to the Navy, son’.
Kelly refused to speak to his sire.
He spent every last minute with Matt that he could. The ones he couldn’t, he was with Andy. He’s going to miss his friend, too. Not as much as Matt, never that much. But Andy’s been his best bud since they were in diapers.
Of course, it was at the bus station that the universe decided to be an even bigger bitch.
Matt stood before him, glaring with his watery eyes. Kelly couldn’t help the coo that slipped out of his lips. He wanted- needed to soothe his little mate. His Omega was clearly angry, but he accepted the scenting.
“You step on that bus, Kelly Benjamin Severide, I-”
Kelly tensed. “You?”
But it was never said. Matt couldn’t say it. He’d never say it.
Kelly knew though. In order for Matt to be able to live, he’ll forget Kelly. Because if he didn’t, he would go into a drop. Enlisting didn’t mean Kelly would be unreachable, they could still talk over the phone, but that wasn’t the same. They were newly mated. They’ve barely spent enough time together to ensure the distance won’t cause an instant drop.
Kelly understood. Hated it. Hated this very situation, but he loved his mate.
“Do what you need to do, baby,” he whispered into the soft blonde hair brushing his cheeks. With a final kiss, Kelly stepped on the bus.
Kelly was eighteen when he joined the Navy.
Notes:
Welp, that's the first part. What are we thinking? Do we wanna see how Matt handles Kelly being gone? Do we think we should just end things here?

Chapter Text
Matt was seventeen when he had his first Heat without his Alpha. And it sucked. He hated every second of it. No matter how much he wanted Kelly to be with him, easing the torture that was a Heat, Matt knew that Kelly wouldn’t come.
The scented clothing Kelly left for him lost its scent within two days of his week-long torment. Matt was supposed to forget Kelly!
But he couldn’t help slipping on the baggy CFD sweatshirt. He held the collar up to his noise to take in the scent of peppermint and charcoal. It was the only thing that could soothe him, if even for a few moments before he had to sniff again.
Yeah, Matt cried during his heat.
He cried for his Alpha. For the future he thought they were going to have. For relief.
None of them happened.
It was the worst Heat he’s ever had. He was borderline of a drop, but somehow, while he was catching his breath under a beam of sunlight…he was able to steady himself. It was as if the sun dried away his tears, and held him in a protective embrace.
After his Heat, he decided to go on suppressants. He promised himself that very day, he would never let Kelly be the reason he cried again.
Matt was eighteen when he snapped at Andy.
“Would you just leave it alone!”
Andy frowned. “Dude, this isn’t healthy. Kel-
“No!” Matt almost growled, his eyes flashing purple. It was rare for Omegas to flash their eyes at someone who wasn’t their mate. But when desperate enough, angry enough, they do. “No,” he repeated calmer. “I don’t wanna hear about him.”
“Ar…Are you sure, Matty?”
“Yes.” A shiver went down Matt’s spine when a memory of his Alpha fluttered by. “He made his choice.”
“He did,” agreed Andy, sighing. “Bu-
“Andy, please.” Begging wasn’t off the table. Matt needed to do what was needed or he’ll be sobbing that very second. And he was never going to cry again. “Just…leave it, kay?”
“Alright, Matty.”
Matt was nineteen when he joined the Chicago Fire Department.
It’s been almost a full year since Kelly left for the Navy. Matt tried to do everything to forget about his Alpha, shy of having his scent glands removed.
But so much had reminded him of Kelly. Their friends, places around the city, the fact that his parents didn’t dare lay a hand on him, still. Matt had been worried that without Kelly, they’d go back to hitting him.
But, thankfully, they still left him alone.
He’d been so confused while out with Andy that the Beta ended up telling him that Kelly threatened them before he left.
His sweet The Alpha made sure he would still be safe even when he’s god knows where. That made something in him squeeze.
“Shit, Matty, don’t cry!” helped Andy, grabbing napkins off the table.
“Dumb Alpha,” he mumbled, accepting the napkins, “Thanks.”
“Kelly said you’d cry.”
“Shut up, Andy. You promised you wouldn’t bring him up.”
Andy winced. “I- Yeah. You’re right. I’m sorry.”
When Matt joined the CFD, Andy was beside him with a dumb grin.
Matt was twenty-one when he finished his probationary year to a lot of people’s surprise. It was rare for an Omega to choose a career in the CFD, but Matt didn’t care. His secondary gender wasn’t going to stop him. He never missed a dose of his suppressors.
He made it through the hazing, and proved it to everyone who doubted his ability. Even though he was a fully certified firefighter, he still had to deal with people asking him if his Alpha knew what he was doing? And what kind of Alpha would want an Omega who was so butch?
On tough days, Andy would take him out for a drink. Anything to help him forget about blazing green eyes and warm hugs. Drown out the booming laugh and sweet kisses that never failed to take his breath away.
Do what you need to do, baby.
Matt was a great firefighter. He loved his job.
So, when it came time for a call for the Lieutenant exam, Matt signed up.
For the first time in CFD history, they had an Omega officer. And like his candidacy year, Matt ignored the naysayers, thanked his supportive friends, and became the best damn Truck lieutenant he could be.
Matt never hid his mate mark. Kelly had been a possessive Alpha and made sure his mark wouldn’t be missed. Matt didn’t hide it, but he also didn’t talk about it. Anyone who questioned it went ignored.
Soon, everyone at House 51 knew not to ask and ignored it like their Truck Lieutenant.
“Hey Matty!” Shouted a familiar Beta’s voice.
“Andy?” Matt was surprised to see one of his oldest friends bound up to him with a duffle bag and a mischievous grin. “What are you doing here?”
“Reporting for duty, Lieutenant Casey,” was the cheeky response with a proper salute.
Matt was twenty-four when he became Andy’s commanding officer. House 51 was thrilled to meet someone from their lieutenant’s past. And Andy was happy to regale them with stories.
But one day, Andy was showing a picture from high school.
“Who’s the Alpha wrapped around Casey?” Asked Mouch, leaning closer to get a better look.
“Oh.” Andy pulled his phone back, wincing. “That’s- uh. He’s my best friend.”
“That’s all?” Asked Herman skeptically. “He’s mighty cozy wi-
Andy slapped his hands over Hermann’s mouth, looking around. “Dude, shut up.”
“Casey is in with the Chief, Darden,” said Mouch, picking up the phone and taking another look. He even went so far as to zoom in on the picture. “Is this his Alpha?”
Andy sighed, dropping his hands and nodding. “Yeah. Kelly Severide.”
“Severide,” whistled Hermann, recognizing the name. What firefighter didn’t? “Wait. Mouch, didn’t Benny’s kid enlist in the Army or something?”
“Navy,” corrected Andy. “Look, don’t tell Matty that you know, okay? They’ve been separated for over half a decade now. And Matty…it’s like he’s forgotten him.”
“That’s awful.” Mouch handed Andy his phone back. “He looked so happy.”
“He was.”
Despite Firehouses being gossip central, Matt’s personal life stayed quiet.
Matt was still twenty-four when an Alpha showed interest in him.
Not that he noticed. After all, the only Alpha who was his lived in a banished part of his memory.
The Alpha, a paramedic, still tried her best in getting close to him. But no matter how hard she tried to be noticed, Matt ignored her.
Andy did not.
“What’s going on with you and Dawson?” Andy asked Matt one day over beers at the Omega’s house. They were watching the game and enjoying their evening.
“Nothing, why?”
“You don’t notice how she’s trying to get in your pants?”
Matt blinked, surprised. “What? No she’s not.”
“Dude. I’m pretty sure she would stick her hand i- gah!” Andy yelped as a pillow hit him square in the face. His beer almost spilled over him. “Dude!”
“Don’t be gross, Darden.” Matt rolled his eyes, a flush staining his cheeks. Matt wasn’t a virgin and he worked in a fire department. He was well aware of what his friend was implying. Didn’t mean he wanted to hear it. “No, she wouldn’t.”
“Uh, yes…she would.” Putting his beer down to avoid any future spillage, Andy faced Matt. “Look. As someone who’s had to watch his best friend swoon ov- I know! We don’t talk about Bruno or whatever, but Matt. I know what it looks like when someone wants to sex you up.”
“I-” Matt hesitated, biting his lip in thought. After a minute, he shook his head. “Look, even if Dawson wanted to ‘sex me up’, you know why I wouldn’t ever let her.”
Andy narrowed his eyes. “Yeah. I know. But she doesn’t.”
“I’ve never hidden my mark.”
“But you don’t talk about it or him, either. Shit, you don’t even smell like him anymore. As far as anyone is concerned, you’re widowed!”
“Well, I’m not,” Matt finally snapped. Baby blue eyes hardened in anger as he slammed his beer bottle on the table and stood up. “I just have a dumb Alpha who thinks he knows better. All because his Sire put that bullshit in his head. My A-Alpha is an idiot and is far away, keeping his ‘distance’. You don’t think I haven’t been tempted to reach out to him? I know you still talk to him. Give him updates. Do me a favor and remind him he’s a dumb idiot knothead of an Alpha, thanks.”
With that, Matt stood and stormed off before the halftime buzzer even rang.
Matt was twenty four when he almost cried again.
Notes:
Oh sweet baby Jesus. Matt is going THROUGH it. Someone give him a hug.
Preferably his Alpha.

Chapter Text
Kelly was in hell. He knew this shit was going to be hard, but Jesus . Those first few days were brutal, and he’d only been on the way to Basic.
Not that shit got easy once Basic started. In fact, it got worse . Part of him ached for home- for Matt- and another part of him just ached . It wasn’t that he was out of shape, but he wasn’t military in-shape. The fact that part of him yearned to drop everything and go back to Matt, made his motivation fluctuate every fucking second.
One moment he’s struggling to wrestle his control to not mouth off at his superior officer and the next he feels in control and knows his decision to go through with enlisting was the right choice.
A breath later, he’s back to struggling.
Kelly hated it.
But above all else, he missed his Omega.
In the little bit of free time he’s actually allowed, he struggles in writing a letter. Their cell phones were taken at the start of Basic, some bullshit about removing distractions until they’re at least somewhat decent soldiers. All that he has is paper and a pen.
The first person that came to mind to write was Matt. He wanted to tell his Omega how much he misses him, loves him . That he wants nothing more than to pull the blonde into his arms and nuzzle into his scent gland. Or how he missed the taste of him on his tongue.
God, to be between those soft thighs again!
You always have a choice, Alpha .
Instead, he wrote a letter to Andy. He asked that his best friend keep an eye on Matt, to make sure that piece of shit Sire and Dam don’t put their hands on his Omega. All the things he told Andy before he left. To let him know if he ever needed to send scented clothes if Matt looked to be on the edge of a drop.
More than anything, Kelly wanted to know if he had to come home.
But he didn’t write that.
He couldn’t .
What if you hurt Matt?
He hated Benny for thinking that Kelly could ever hurt Matt. That was complete and utter bullshit. Kelly would never .
But…
Kelly’s temper had been getting harder to control as time passed. So far, the only victims to his anger had been dickwads who threatened his Omega or friend. He thought he was in control.
What if…
Kelly refuses to leave it to chance. No one, not even him , will put their hands on Matt.
By the time Basic Training was over, Kelly ached, but not like he did in the beginning. His only ache was for Matt, but his body has begun to harden as he found a way to hold onto his control with a somewhat okay grip.
Kelly was twenty when he decided to re-enlist for another three year contract. His control was okay, but there were times he’d still lose himself to his Alpha. Without his Omega around to soften his edges, he was brutal and ferocious. It’s why his SNCO suggested he apply to be a SEAL.
At twenty, he wasn’t the youngest at BUD/S; but he was the fiercest of his class. In six months, as other recruits rang the bell, he stayed on track. He felt his grip on his Alpha tightening as he was pushed beyond limits he didn’t even know he had.
By graduation day, Kelly stood proud with his trident. Benny and Andy flew down to celebrate with him, but the only thing that Kelly cared for was the picture of Matt that Andy gave him that morning.
Matt was dressed in his Class A’s, looking sharp at his own graduation ceremony from a year or so ago. His blue eyes sparkling with pride as the only Omega of his graduating class.
Kelly hated that he couldn’t be there to celebrate his mate, but he remembered when Andy called him and let him hear over the phone as they called Matt’s name. It didn’t matter that Kelly was in the middle of work; he chuffed in pride. His fellow soldiers gave him shit for it, but he didn’t care.
His Omega was the best.
With his trident in hand, Kelly signed his re-enlistment paperwork and became a SEAL operator.
“Since when did you have a mate?”
Kelly didn’t hide his mating mark. Well, not if he had a choice. During operations, he had to wear scent patches for obvious reasons. But when he wasn’t on a mission, and he had a choice, his mating mark was there for anyone to see.
Well, when he wasn’t wearing long sleeves. Matt didn’t place his mating bite on Kelly’s neck gland. Instead, his Omega put the bite on Kelly’s right wrist gland. The blonde’s own version of possession; not that Kelly hated it.
Oh no, he loved that he could stare and caress the physical representation of his bond with his little Omega.
“Since always,” answered Kelly, closing up his rucksack. He faced the Army Ranger who was tagging along on their latest mission. The man was easy going, but kept to himself a lot. Strapped to his back was a rifle Kelly knew had taken more headcounts than probably his whole current unit combined. The man was a certified badass. “What’s it to you, Halstead?”
“Just a surprise, is all. Someone out in this world is willing to deal with your grouchy ass?” quipped the other, grinning.
“We were all surprised, too,” agreed someone else on their Air Transpo. Kelly rolled his eyes, flicking them all off.
“Fuck off.”
He made sure to put his scent patches on next. They still had two hours before they reached their destination, but anything to keep the topic off of Matty.
“What’s your mate like?”
“Halstead,” called their ranking officer on today’s mission, unknowingly saving the Ranger.
Unfortunately, it was during that mission he found out a secret about their Ranger Overwatch that Kelly didn’t see coming. It changed their dynamic forever. Afterall, Kelly was mated. Which meant all other Omegas were safe from being claimed by him should they slip into a Heat in the middle of a fucking mission with no extraction plan that wasn’t sixty clicks out .
Omegas weren’t banned from military service. However, the likelihood of them passing the rigorous training for special operations was extremely low. Not even Alphas or Betas made it through. It took a certain type of person.
And yet, Jay Halstead passed training to become an Army Ranger.
“This would be your luck,” sighed Kelly, tossing a water bottle at the Omega, curled up on the other side of the room they were hiding in.
“I don’t want to hear it, Severide,” snapped Jay, aggressively opening his water bottle. “Unless you know what it’s like to have your body turn traitor on you, shut it.”
“Ruts ar-
“Like hell it’s the same!”
Kelly held his hands up in surrender, a small smile tugging at his lips.
“Why are you grinning?”
“You just remind me of someone.”
Jay was silent, looking at him with bloodshot eyes. “Your mate?”
Kelly nodded.
“Sounds like someone I’d like.”
“You and Matty would be best friends, I’m sure.”
For the first time since his Heat was triggered by the enemy’s usage of experimental gas, Jay grinned. “Tell me about him.”
And Kelly did. That ache that’s been part of his normal since he was eighteen throbbed as he spoke about Matt with someone who wasn’t Andy.
“Wait, you’re from Chicago? Shit dude, same.”
Kelly’s eyebrows rose. “No shit?”
“No shit. I- fuck.” Jay grimaced as another wave of cramps passed through. Kelly said nothing, and waited for Jay to continue. “Any plans of visiting the homefront again soon?”
“No.”
“Are you a dumbass?”
“Excuse me?”
Jay grunted, getting to his feet. He used the wall to steady himself, but his glare was leveled on the Alpha. “You gotta be a dumbass if you don’t have plans to go home. To go see your Omega. Get your shit, Frogface.”
“What do you think you’re doing?” asked Kelly, watching as Jay strapped his gear back to himself. Not that a lot was taken off. Just enough that the man could still protect himself if need be but also allow him to curl up when the cramps got seriously bad.
“We’re getting the fuck out of here. And then I’m dragging your ass back to Chicago.”
Kelly was twenty-five when Jay was finally able to get him to Chicago.
Notes:
Jay Halstead is a fucking badass Omega. Enough said.
But if I were to say more....he's also the hero of this fic. lol

Chapter Text
Matt swears he’s going crazy. For the last few days when he wasn’t on shift, he swears he can smell his Alpha in the air. But every time he gets a faint scent of Ash . The fact his Alpha smelled like the remains of a burning building was not lost on Matt. It’s irony at it’s best. But his Alpha wasn’t just Ash. There was also a very subtle hint of forest. It’s a scent of juxtapositions, that Matt loved.
Which is why when he first scented Ash with a touch of forest at Molly’s, his heart rate spiked.
Instantly, his brain was suggesting that Kelly was in the bar. That his Alpha was done being an idiot and was finally back home. He was about to be pulled into strong arms and a warm chest. A low rumble vibrating through his chest as a demanding nose tries to nuzzle into his neck gland. Large hands resting on his slim hips.
But after a few minutes, nothing happened.
No Alpha.
So he had to be making it up, right?
Kelly wouldn’t be here and not come smother him immediately.
Right?
Their time apart didn’t have Kelly fall out of love with him, right?
Matt still loved his Alpha, probably more than ever. Was he annoyed with him? Pissed?
Without a doubt.
But that didn’t mean he didn’t love his dumb Alpha.
After that first time, the following day while on shift at a wreck site, Matt smelled it again. It was such a surprise, he stumbled into Andy.
“Dude, you okay?”
“Fine. I’m fine,” he mumbled, trying discreetly to look around. But Andy, being Andy, noticed immediately. He put his back to the wreck and held Matt’s gaze.
“Matty, you sure?”
“I…I don’t know,” he answered truthfully. Because he didn’t know. He can’t just tell his best friend that he can smell his Alpha when they both knew Kelly was everywhere but Chicago.
“Do you need t-
“No,” Matt hissed, cutting that suggestion off immediately. The fact Matt was tense at the suggestion that his secondary gender was preventing him from doing his job, should be a sign in itself. Matt never snapped at anyone. He was always calm and collected. “I can do my job.”
“Whoa.” Andy held his hands up in defense, taking a step back. “I didn’t mean anything by it. Just looking out for you.”
“No one asked you, too,” Matt snapped.
Andy stared at him and then in a very low voice spoke. “You know damn well that I was . Hell, I was ordered , too. Not that I wouldn’t. You’re one of my best friends, Matty. You know I’m coming from a place of love.”
“Shit.” Matt pulled his helmet off so he could run a hand through his sweaty hair. “Yes. Right. You’re right. Sorry, Andy.”
Andy smiled, shrugging. Already back to his usual energy. “Let’s finish up and get back, yeah?”
“Yeah.”
A flash of ginger a few lanes over caught his attention. He nudged Andy and nodded over to the area as he put his helmet back on. “What’s Will doing here?”
“They had to bring him to the field for that guy who’s stuck.”
“Shit.” Matt grimaced, but got back into the swing of things.
After that, Matt kind of lost count. He’s honestly not sure what was worse. The fact that it’s been almost seven godforsaken years since he last was in his Alpha’s arms or his stupid scent that was teasing him over the last three days.
He can now smell Ash and Forest at the grocery store for Christ’s sake.
Can’t an Omega just be ?!
“Matty?”
And now he was making up hearing his Alpha. But not like what he sounded like in high school. No, this was a voice that had deepened, matured. Was he so desperate for Kelly tha-
“Matty?”
Matt froze.
That wasn’t in his head.
Slowly, because he really wasn’t sure what he could trust anymore, he looked over his shoulder. There, standing by the BBQ sauces and other condiments was Kelly. Not Kelly from his memories, but an older… hotter version.
Fuck.
Fuck .
This Kelly was big . Matt knew that his firefighting gave him muscles- pretty hard to avoid, but he didn’t get bulky. Kelly packed on muscle that Matt was pretty sure could benchpress him with no to little problem.
God, and didn’t that make him feel a little hot around the collar.
Kelly took a step forward, hand out to…to what?
“No,” said Matt, stronger than he thought he could. “ No . This is not happening. ”
“Ma-
“Nope,” he interrupted, turning forward again and walking away. He pushed his cart to the entrance before abandoning it and leaving the store completely. He headed straight for his truck, snapping the door closed. He couldn’t turn his car on due to his hands shaking so much.
His Alpha- Kelly had been right there. The event of Ash and Forest the strongest it’s ever been in years, looking handsome, and all Matt ever wanted, and- and he walked away.
He told his Alpha ‘ no’ .
Why didn’t Andy say that Kelly was back?
----
“So, that was him?” asked Jay, grabbing the cart Matt ditched and pushing it back. “I like him.”
“Already?” snorted Kelly, not looking away from the glass door. Almost out of view was Matt’s truck, it hasn’t moved yet. It wasn’t even on yet.
“Of course,” sassed Jay, picking up the mustards he was looking at earlier and reading their nutrition facts. “He told you ‘no’.”
“I deserve it,” Kelly sighed, crossing his arms.
“You deserve a lot more, if you ask me.”
“I wasn’t.”
“Consider it a free service then.” Deciding on the dijon mustard, he added it to the cart. “Though, what are you still doing here?”
“I don’t think h-
Jay tsked, pushing the cart into Kelly’s back and forcing him to take a step forward. “That’s the problem. You and thinking . Stop that.”
“You’re a menace, Halstead.”
“I’m you’re fucking Fairy God-Omega, is what I am. You hurt him. Like hell he’s just going to throw his arms open and accept you like you never left. Get real, Severide. And while you’re at it, some balls. Go out there and try again. And- shit, did Will say cereal? I need to get cereal.”
Jay gave one extra push of the cart, getting a couple more steps out of the Alpha before he stopped. Alphas, so stubborn. “ Go , Kelly. You owe it to him and yourself to try again.”
“Right. I’ll be-uh.” Kelly pointed to the glass doors.
Nodding, Jay wheeled the cart toward the cereal aisle. “Good.”
Kelly heard Jay walk off. He gave himself two more breaths of indecision, but then he took his own step forward. He knew this wouldn’t be easy, but he wasn’t expecting outright rejection either.
But that was Matty.
He always marched to his own drum and not even Kelly could predict his ways.
God, when that first ‘no’ dropped from Matt’s soft lips, Kelly felt every year of their separation clench at his heart. With each rejection after, Kelly could only feel the Ache. His only constant companion.
“You’re an asshole, Kelly Severide!”
Kelly stopped short as Matt slammed the door to his truck shut and stomped over to him. There wasn’t anything he could do as Matt was in his personal space, grabbing Kelly’s shirt and pulling him down as he ripped Kelly a new one.
If anyone else tried this shit, Kelly could’ve gotten out of it as easy as breathing.
But with Matt, with his Omega, he was always powerless.
“You can’t just come back and get a happy ever after reunion at the fucking grocery store, Kelly!”
“I wasn’t pla-
“No, shut up. You don’t get to talk right now. I’m pissed off.”
Kelly nodded, closing his mouth.
“So, now you can listen? I guess the Navy was good for something,” Matt grumbled, baby blue’s blazing. “Kelly, it hurt . I know you know that it hurt. And I’m not going to compare our experiences and say which of us had it worse. Because it was awful for both of us.” Matt’s grip on Kelly’s shirt relaxed slightly. He’s never been able to stay mad in Kelly’s presence. He was already feeling the effects of Kelly’s scent curling around him, protecting him… claiming him.
“You’re so dumb .”
“I am.”
“And an idiot. ”
“Utterly.”
“A jerk .”
“The absolute worst.”
Matt’s eyes narrowed. “Agreeing with me doesn’t mean I’ll forgive you faster.”
“Not asking you, too,” Kelly admitted, keeping his hands to his sides. He wanted to cup that soft cheek that always called for his attention since they were kids. Of course, he always followed through with the call back then. Now, he wasn’t feeling so confident his touch would be accepted.
Matt mumbled something seconds before he dropped his head to rest on Kelly’s chest.
“What was that?”
“My Alpha is a fool ,” Matt said a little louder for him to hear. Kelly accepted the insult, but it was the ‘ my Alpha ’ that made his heart race.
“I am.”
Notes:
Kelly is both Matt's Alpha and a fool. There's no denying it.
There's just one more chapter left for this fic~
Gotta put Gabby in her place, after all.
As always, can't wait to hear what y'all thought!

Chapter 5
Notes:
Heeyyyyyyy
It's been a hot minute since I've updated. Sorry sorry ^^;
Had family visiting and then I got sick. I'm actually still trying to kick this shitty cough still. Do not recommend. 0/10.
Fortunately, I was able to write a little something this evening. Yeah, this chapter was not BETA read. We die like Gabby's hope of ever getting in Matty's pants. Unfortunately, this is the only fic getting an update. It appears that writer's block is slipping in. TT_TT
Anyways. Enough of me. Enjoy what you came here to read!
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Kelly regretted letting Jay meet Matt almost immediately. Almost . It wasn’t right away, because the Ranger did something nice. Not that he thought Jay was awful. He wouldn’t be friends with the Omega if he didn’t like him. When Kelly saw Jay walk out of the store with more, a lot more , than the two things they needed, he couldn’t help the pleased rumble.
Jay winked and put everything in the back of Matt’s truck.
Of course, Matt had no idea who the other man was, but was instantly on guard. Kelly wanted to pull Matt into his side and reassure the blonde that Jay was no threat. He wanted to nuzzle Matt’s hair.
But before Kelly could so much as move, Jay was sticking out his hand for a handshake with a friendly smile.
“Hey, I’m Jay Halstead. Did your Alpha finally get his head out of his ass and apologize?”
“Uh,” Matt blinked, but was shaking the other Omega’s hand. “Actually, no.”
Jay’s eyes narrowed, turning on Kelly. “The fuck, Severide?”
“Oh fuck off, Halstead. I’m working on it.”
“Well work harder.” Jay turned back to Matt. “I’m sorry it took me so long to get him back to you.”
“Oh, are you in the Navy too?” Matt asked, looking between them both.
“God no,” Jay grimaced to Matt’s amusement. “Army. You will not believe the paperwork it took to get both our commands to let us have some R&R. We got in a couple days ago but have been crashing at my brother’s place, trying to recuperate after our last mission.”
Matt’s brow furrowed. “Sorry, what? You’ve been in Chicago for a few days already?”
“Yes,” answered Kelly quickly, before Jay could say anything that may set Matt off. “We came in around midnight a couple days ago and were knocked out for almost a full forty-eight”
“No, you were knocked out. I went to see the sights. Will showed me this cool bar. Should go see it! It’s got a great vibe to it, filled with a lot of first responders though. I think it’s owned by a firefighter or something? And yesterday, Will needed to be at some accident on our way to lunch.” Jay shrugged at Kelly’s eyebrow raise. “You’re the sleeping beauty, Squid. Not me.”
“Whatever.” Kelly turned back to Matt. “This is actually the first ti- Matt?”
“It’s been you ?” asked Matt incredulously, pointing at Jay. “I thought I was going crazy, but it’s been you this whole time ?”
Jay made a questioning noise. He looked to Kelly for an explanation, but the Alpha was at a loss as well.
“Come again?”
Matt let out a breath, running a hand through his hair and making the short strands stand up endearingly. Strong fingers twitched, wanting to touch.
“I’ve been scenting Kelly for the last few days, but I couldn’t see him.” Matt turned his big blue eyes to Kelly and something in the Alpha clenched. Kelly’s done a lot of things that have unfortunately upset Matt. Primarily, being away for so long. However, he’s never teased his mate with his scent. Predominantly because he couldn’t keep away from Matt whenever he was close enough for them to scent each other. Matt’s cinnamon spiced vanilla never failed to entice Kelly.
It’s why he called out for Matt at the grocery store despite not being ready to confront him. Kelly can’t be blamed that he was hoping for something better than the grocery store .
Kelly leveled a glare on Jay. “Seriously, Halstead?”
“I…” Jay drifted off, looking guilty. “Shit, I’m sorry. I’ve grown so used to Severide’s scent, I hadn’t realized I was- shit. I’m so, so sorry.”
“It’s…well, it’s not okay.” Matt crossed his arms. “Why do you have my Alpha’s scent on you?”
Okay, this time nothing clenched, but it did make that swooping feeling like he’d just been pushed out of a plane, again . (Again, Jay’s fault.) Hearing Matt claim him, it was still one of the best feelings in the world. It was- shit. Kelly felt he was flying.
“It is not because we’re hooking up. God no!” exclaimed Jay, crossing his arms and making a face. “Absolutely not. Gross. I think I’m gonna hurl.”
Kelly rolled his eyes. “Would you stop doing that whenever someone asks?” Turning to Matt, Kelly was already reaching out a hand to- well, to do something. But he thought better of it. His hand dropped back to his side. “Jay has my scent because our respective commands thought it would be funny to partner us on the field. In essence, Jay is my field partner. He watches my back, and I watch his. We keep each other alive.
“Severide isn’t even close to my type,” Jay adds helpfully. “He’s too…” Jay made another face, but yelped when Kelly shoved Jay’s face away and continued his explanation.
“We’re in close quarters a lot of the time. After staring death in the face a couple times- Halstead is like a kid brother I have to suffer.”
---
Matt didn’t know what to do. He wanted to trust Kelly. His Alpha never lied to him. Matt knows Alpha would never turn his back on those he considered friends, despite what his words may say. It may sound like Kelly was annoyed with the other Omega, but he was fond of the other soldier.
After staring death in the face…
Oh god. Matt understood that there are now parts of Kelly he’ll never get to truly understand. It’s in the same way Kelly will never understand the parts that he went through over the last several years.
But there’s an Omega who does know. Who stood shoulder to shoulder with Kelly.
And it wasn’t Matt.
“I should go. U-Um, there’s frozen stuffs.” He gestured weakly at his truck. Groceries that this new Omega bought for him. “Don’t want it to go…bad. Yeah. You - um…I’m gonna go.”
Dropping his head, he took a step away. Then another.
“Matty.”
He paused.
“I want to see you again.”
Did Matt want to see Kelly again?
Yes. Yes he did. Everything inside of him wanted to turn around and walk right into Kelly’s arms and scent his dumb, stupid Alpha something fierce. Remove any lingering scent of Not-Matt. He wanted to ki-
No.
He’s still mad.
Matt’s allowed to still be upset.
When the sound of a hand smacking skin, Matt was startled from his thoughts. He looked over his shoulder to see Jay gesturing to Matt with a pointed look and mouthing words. It looked like he was saying ‘hug him’. Kelly was glaring at Jay and shaking his head, hand making a slashing motion as if to say ‘stop it’.
Unimpressed, Jay rolled his eyes. When their eyes met, Jay offered Matt a weak smile. “I promise I’ll keep my scarce next time, alright? And it might not be my place to say anything-”
“Then shut up, Halstead.”
“-but, I’ve been with Severide for over a year. In this last year, I’ve never seen him happier than he is right now.”
Matt spared Kelly a look. His Alpha looked contrite. Similar to when they were still in high school and Kelly just did something stupid. He’d growl and huff at anyone who wasn’t Matt until the blonde would climb into his lap or slip into his arms. Then the Alpha would nuzzle Matt’s cheek in his silent beg for forgiveness. The Alpha would be sweet and docile, more so than usual until Matt would grace him with a sweet kiss on his forehead.
As if that simple kiss would absolve him of all wrongdoings.
Well, it’s not going to be that easy.
“I have shift…the day after tomorrow.” Matt looked away when Kelly nodded, brow furrowing. “House Fifty-One.”
Turning on his heel, Matt headed back to his car.
He couldn’t help the small smile when he heard Jay exclaim, ‘dude’ as the car door snapped closed.
---
It was a random day in April when FireHouse 51 was visited by Kelly Severide. Well, random day for the shift currently on call. Kelly was invited, after all. At least, he hoped so. Jay swore that he was, because why else would Matt tell him where he would be other than for Kelly to stop by?
In some odd logic, Kelly supposed that Jay made a point. Hopefully, the Omega was right and he wasn’t about to make a fool of himself.
Kelly was in street clothes again. While he wasn’t in his uniform 24/7 since Day One of his Enlistment, but he has grown accustomed to being in his OCP’s. Today he was wearing a leather jacket over his grey Henley, keeping the slight chill in the air away. It was an unseasonably warm day when he saw Matt again for the first time.
But their second reunion fell on a properly cool spring day in Chicago. Kelly heard his dog tags jostle slightly on his chest as he pushed open what he hoped was the front door of the firehouse. It’s been a hot minute since he’s had to walk into one. He didn’t visit his Sire often, but it’s not like firehouses were complicated in design.
Assessing the main entry way with practiced ease, he was quick to step to the side as a familiar Beta tried tackling him.
“Rude,” laughed Andy, turning to Kelly with a regular hug.
“Don’t be a little shit, Andy,” greeted Kelly with his own grin, hugging his friend fiercely. “So, good to see you, man.”
“I know you missed my pretty face.”
Kelly rolled his eyes. “Sure. That’s what I missed.”
Pulling apart, they looked each other over. Sure, Kelly had been in touch with Andy over the years. The Beta kept him up to date on Matt. Whenever Kelly was able to use his phone, he’d find a couple pictures of Matt (and at times, Andy too) waiting for him along with messages of new exciting things that happened.
“Glad to see you actually got some muscle there.” Kelly nodded at the Beta's arms. “Used to have noodle arms.”
“Shut up, Sev. We can’t all get SEAL muscles.” Andy pushed him- well, tried to. Kelly didn’t budge.
“You’ll get over it.” Smirking, Kelly even flexed an arm muscle.
“Jerk,” laughed Andy, rolling his eyes fondly. “Dude, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be getting a shitty tan in the Middle East or on some boat?”
Kelly was never the type to mince his words.
“Where’s Matty?”
Laughter turned into worry. “You’re just going to surprise him? Are you an idiot?”
“Watch it,” Kelly replied, a lack of growl noticeable to the Beta. “He invited me.”
“Seriously?”
“Why would I joke about that?”
Andy made to reply, but then snapped his mouth closed.
Satisfied that Andy wasn't being an idiot any more, he asked again. “Where is he?”
Sighing, the Beta waved for Kelly to follow him. “This way.”
Notes:
Hopefully the typos and whatever wasn't too bad.
There were a few of you who thought Kelly was dispersing his smell, to see if Matt would be receptive. Which...solid guess, guys. Truly. Just....not what I was planning with that.
I know we love Jay, but also...total strange Omega with Matty's Alpha's scent. Oh no no.
Also! I thought this would be the last chapter. But it's not. I wanna do one more.
Just not sure how spicy I wanna make it. Thoughts?

Chapter Text
Memory was a funny thing, Matt decided.
With Kelly being back in town, Matt thought everything from the past would come rushing back. That he’d remember the way Kelly’s lips felt brushing against his neck or the Alpha’s hand on his lower back pushing their bodies together. The memory of Kelly’s chuckles and teasing tone. The heavy stare that always promised Matt nothing but the world.
Those were the memories that Matt feared.
If any of these memories fought to tease his senses, he wouldn’t be able to be angry at his dumb Alpha anymore. How could he?
Staying mad while remembering the sweetness behind Kelly’s looks or the fire that burned only for Matt? Matt was strong, but he wasn’t that strong.
Even right now, he knew he also secretly hungered for those very memories.
Matt was proud of himself for not caving at the grocery store. He didn’t let Kelly’s scent- God! His scent !- or his deliciously fit body persuade him differently. The Navy may be Matt’s nemesis, he was willing to admit- at least to himself - that it did do wonders for his Alpha. Kelly had not been unfit back in the day. In fact, he was already bigger than most of the Alphas, but whatever the Navy was feeding him?
Matt is a fan .
Not so much about the Navy’s idea of partnering his Alpha with an unmated Omega.
Whenever Matt took a moment to think about the other Omega, he couldn’t help frowning. Matt trusted Kelly. That was never in question. He wasn’t worried about losing Kelly’s heart. Kelly gave that to him when they were teenagers. And Matt held onto it, even when he couldn’t think about it.
Kelly’s heart was Matt’s.
So no, he wasn’t worried about that .
He just really hated the idea of another Omega covered in his mate’s scent while Matt wasn’t. It’s a fair feeling. If anything, Matt had every right to be snippy about it, even if he did, sort of, kinda liked the other Omega.
Who just buys groceries for someone else?! And drags someone else’s Alpha back home?! And i-
The point Matt was trying to make was that memory was a funny thing.
Because even though he told Kelly where he’d be today- which was clearly an invitation for the Alpha to come and see him- Matt completely forgot about it.
For him, it was just another day on shift.
Okay, that’s a lie.
He did remember at the start of shift, was actually planning on talking to Andy about it, but in the middle of the morning briefing the sirens went off.
Of course, Matt wasn’t going to talk about Kelly while on a call. He didn’t need his busy-body crew suddenly involved. Andy was enough, thank you very much.
But just as they were seconds away from returning, they were called right back out. It was almost non-stop for the first six hours on shift. They were tired, grouchy even. Otis cheered when they made it back before hustling faster than any of them have ever seen to the restroom. Mouch took over the TV while Hermann took a call from his Omega, Cindy. Cruz was content to talk to the Squad guys.
Matt just wanted to fall on his bed and sleep for the next few hours.
But , stupid paperwork.
It was shifts like these that he sometimes contemplated his life choices in becoming an officer.
A knock at his door had him sparing his guest a quick look, before focusing back on the report.
“Dawson?”
“Hey Casey,” greeted Gabby, leaning against the doorway. She was the Alpha who worked on Ambulance 61 and Andy swore had a thing for him. Matt didn’t see it, but he also made sure to never make it seem like he was interested in her. Even if he weren’t mated, she wasn’t his type. “I was wondering if I could ask you something? You got time?”
Matt looked up at her serious tone.
Oh god. Andy wasn’t right, right?
There’s no way she actually liked him, right?
She sees Kelly’s claim, right?
It’s right there on his neck where he’s never hidden it a day of his life.
Oh god, he should’ve scented Kelly more the other day so he could have the Alpha’s scent on him and then he could avoid this very awkward situation she’s about to put them in.
This is Kelly’s fault.
And Andy’s.
“Uhh,” he said, lamely holding up the report and hopefully giving an apologetic look.
“Ah, you’re busy, right.” She tucked some hair behind her ear and fidgeted slightly. “Nevermind. Forget it.”
“No. I-” Shit, he had to open his dumb mouth. Curse his empathy. “I can spare a minute. What’s going on? Everything okay?”
“Are you sure?”
No, he’s not fucking sure.
But he still leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. “Yeah. What’s up?”
She grinned, taking a couple more steps in. Matt instantly felt uneasy. Many of the Alphas at the station respected Matt’s Officer’s Quarters.
Yes, he was an officer, but he was also an Omega. It would not only be rude, but an invasion of his sorta nest walking into his Quarters while on shift. Matt’s real nest was at home, naturally. But while on shift, he did see his quarters as a temporary nest when away from home.
And everyone knew not to mess with an Omega’s mess, mated or not.
Real nest or sorta nest.
It was two steps and he hated it.
Only one Alpha was allowed in his nest. His Alpha. Even pissed as he was with Kelly, he would still let his Alpha come into his nest.
But her?
Matt may be oblivious like Andy joked the other day, but he was very aware of the female Alpha right now. This was the first time she’s ever crossed the invisible boundary. And he was not okay about it.
“I’m thinking of becoming a firefighter,” she admitted, shoulders back as she leaned against his bed.
“O-Oh?”
“What?” She frowned as if she was offended right now and not him. “You don’t think I can do it?”
He shook his head, standing up. “No. I think you can, just not-”
Matt cut himself off before he says anything that could make the Alpha get an impression of something else . Right now he needed to focus on getting her out of his space. His nest.
Dropping a hand on his stomach, he feigned hunger. “Gotta eat something.”
He stood, walking out quickly. Thankfully, she was quick to follow his steps. Not exactly a good feeling either, but better than the one he had moments ago. He needed to find someone- anyone who could help get her attention off of him.
Eyes roving around the sleeping space, he mentally cursed when he came up empty.
Where was Andy? Or Hermann? Mouch?
Hell, he’d even take Otis, right now!
“Not what, Casey? You think I’m weak or something? Just because I’m a woman doesn’t mea-”
“Christ, Dawson,” he snapped, stopping. “I don’t care if you’re a woman. Or do you forget that I’m an Omega?”
He watched as she mentally backtracked, trying to find a way to apologize.
“Save it.” He held up a hand. “Look, I think you’d make a great firefighter. Okay? Great.”
Matt didn’t wait for her response, he walked into the kitchen and looked for a snack. He actually was a bit peckish after all. He felt less tense as he saw his two eldest crew members.
“Hey Casey,” greeted Hermann from a nearby table. The older man was looking at a file that the Omega already knew he wanted nothing to do with. The older Alpha, kindest and most real firefighter Matt has had the privilege to serve with and as his commanding officer. But…the man was very easily tempted into bad business plans. Even after having Molly’s- his one success!- the man was still gullible.
“Seen Andy?” asked Matt, finding some chocolate. He checked the expiration date, and let out a breath of relief when he saw it was good.
“Think he’s out talking to a visitor,” answered Mouch absently. “Was just here a second ago.”
“Casey,” Gabby called out, walking in. The blonde tensed. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Hermann and Mouch turn his way.
Since Day One, the two older Alphas always looked out for him. They never held his secondary gender against him, but Matt did have to prove himself. He was thankful that they treated him as any other Candidate back then. Even now, they still looked out for him.
“That’s Lieutenant Casey,” Hermann said firmly, despite calling Matt the same not even minutes earlier. But Matt wasn’t going to argue it.
Gabby rolled her eyes. “Do you mind, Hermann?”
“Actually, yeah. I do,” said the older Alpha, standing up. “He didn’t earn that rank so you can be rude.”
“You’re serious?” She gave him a disbelieving look. “Since when did you bow to-
“Hey Lieutenant?” Mouch called softly, waving Matt his way. Matt shot the man a thankful look and walked over.
“Ah, wait. I wasn’t done!” Gabby called, reaching out and grabbing Matt’s wrist, almost on his wrist gland.
Matt winced at her sudden grip. Snatching his hand back, he stared at her in shock. Immediately, he held his other hand over the spot she touched in an attempt to remove any scent she left on his skin.
Maybe even the little bit of scent that still lingered from Kelly.
His shock was quickly turning into anger.
“Oh. Um. Sorry.”
“Are you fucking serious, Dawson?” Andy called out from the main entrance. “We talked about that!”
Matt spun around and gaped at the Beta. “You talked about what ?!”
“That she keeps her handsy self off of you,” Andy shrugged, looking over his shoulder. “Also, you have a guest Matty.”
“What’s the big deal?” she asked, crossing her arms in a huff.
Matt was going to get dizzy with the amount of spinning he’s doing, because he was now giving her a look of infuriated disbelief. “Are you serious? Jesus Christ, Dawson. I’m mated . You don’t just go around scenting mated Omegas so casually!”
“Mated,” she scoffed, rolling her eyes. “If you’re mated, why haven’t we ever seen your Alpha?”
“Because I don’t owe you shit ,” Matt hissed. “There’s only one Alpha who can touch me and you’re not him. Touch me again or walk into my quarters the way you did earlier and I’ll be going straight to the Chief, Paramedic Dawson.”
He ignored her sputtering and spun around (again!) to only be startled at his Alpha standing beside Andy with an eyebrow raised.
“Kels!”
“Matty.”
Grinning like the little shit that he was, Andy added, “Andy.”
Kelly rolled his eyes, shoving Andy. Easily moving the normally solid Beta with ease . The casual show of strength made Matt feel a little warm around the collar.
From the couch, Mouch cleared his throat. “Who’s this?”
“Kelly Severide,” answered a new voice. Matt didn’t look away from his Alpha as their Chief walked in, grinning wide. “The SEALs finally let you out?”
Matt’s eyes widened. The SEALs ?! His Alpha was a SEAL ?
“No, sir. Just on some shore leave with an Army buddy,” answered Kelly, shaking the black man’s with polite enthusiasm. Matt vaguely remembered that Kelly’s sire once worked with Boden, which explained why the other man knew Kelly.
But Matt didn’t focus on that. He focused more on the fact that he was mated to a SEAL.
It’s not that Matt wasn’t aware of what a SEAL was. He’s seen some of the training they’ve had to do in order to get their trident. Andy had gotten a random obsession with SEALs a few years back. Which meant Matt was forced to learn about the profession whether he wanted to or not.
This at least explained why Andy was suddenly so interested.
A damn SEAL.
Holy shit.
…did this mean Kelly could pi-
Nope. Not going down that road.
“What brings you to Fifty-One?” asked Hermann after his own greeting.
“Yeah, Kelly,” goaded Andy, throwing an arm around Kelly’s shoulder like when they were in high school. “What brings you here? My pretty face, right?”
The collective snort around the room made Andy tsk.
“Hands off, Darden,” Matt sighed, pushing Andy off gently, but with firm pressure.
Andy blinked, then threw an arm around Matt’s shoulder instead. “You know Matty-
“What a fucking double standard,” Gabby snapped suddenly, glaring at the Beta and Omega. “I barely touch your wrist, but you let Darden hang all over you? What happened to your so-called Alpha now?”
“I have permission,” Andy shrugged, pulling Matt closer to the Omega’s exasperation. “Childhood best friends, and all that jazz.”
Matt looked at Kelly, slightly surprised that the Alpha hasn’t said anything yet. In the past, there would’ve been at least a few growls and snapped words. Maybe even a punch or two.
Now, the Alpha watched them silently. It was different. Matt…wasn’t sure if he was a fan. He kinda liked his growly Alpha.
“Is there something I need to know?” he faintly heard the Chief ask. He missed the look the Chief sent Gabby and Andy. He was still focused on Kelly who now met his gaze.
“Don’t know,” Andy replied nonchalantly. “Is there Dawson?”
The female Alpha huffed, shaking her head. “No sir.”
Kelly’s eyebrow raised, silently questioning Matt. Narrowing his eyes, Matt answered. The Alpha’s lips twitched.
“Hey Chief,” voiced Kelly, getting the Alpha’s attention. “Mind if I do a ride along with one of your rigs for the rest of this shift?”
Boden’s eyes widened. “Thinking of following in your old man’s boot steps?”
“Something like that.”
“Well, I think you’d really like Squad, but the-
Hermann interrupted, grinning winningly. “He can ride with us, right Lieutenant? Help me out here, Mouch.”
“You want to-” Mouch grew quiet, thought it over for a moment, then turned to Matt and nodded. “Yeah, Lieutenant. Let him ride with us.”
“I think that’s a great idea,” Andy piped up. Not in his normally obnoxious tone, but in a calm tone.
A tone Matt rarely trusted, but the other two Alphas were insistent on it. Which was also odd, what would either of them have interest in showing a strange Alpha what they did. Normally, they were opposed to things and it was Otis and Cruz who proposed random ideas.
Matt looked at the Chief who nodded. “It’s up to you, Lieutenant. Though, looks like majority of Truck is on board.”
“Cruz and Otis would be too,” Hermann added. “But they’re busy. Outside, cleaning the rig.”
“Fine,” Matt sighed. He held out his hand, the one Gabby grabbed.
Let the record show that Matt did not whimper at feeling Kelly’s warm hand clasp his own. Nor did he purr when he felt fingers gently graze his wrist gland out of sight of the others. The same spot he’d be rubbing earlier to remove the unwanted scent.
His dumb Alpha maybe wasn’t so dumb anymore.
“Welcome to Truck 81.”
Matt was twenty-five when he forgave his Alpha.
Notes:
Matt forgave his Alpha...but that doesn't mean he's not going to let his Alpha sweat a little bit more. (^^)v

Chapter Text
Kelly hadn’t planned on riding along. Actually, he didn’t have anything planned outside of seeing Matt again. None of this was planned.
But then he saw another Alpha touching his Omega.
He may claim he was in control, and maybe for the most part he was, but there wasn’t a single side of him that would be okay with another Alpha touching Matt. In a split second, he now had a plan to stick around. He remembered times in the past when Benny would boast about ride-alongs they had. How as commanding officer of the rig, he’d been responsible for the civilian their whole stay.
His mouth spoke before he truly realized what he was saying, but he can’t say that he regretted it. He’ll be able to be around his Omega for the rest of the day. Ensure handsy Alphas stayed away if they knew what was good for them.
Matt would probably oppose what Kelly really wanted to do right now. But Kelly held himself back from scenting Matt so heavily that he’d only smell of Kelly.
Years of training was the only reason Dawson was safe.
Before the Navy, Kelly was vicious. As a SEAL, Kelly was still vicious, but now he was also precise in his brutality. And that was when he was on a mission, Matt nowhere around.
Having his mate before him, touched by another Alpha? Kelly really had to focus. Somehow, he was able to force himself to stay where he was. He kept Andy between them as a buffer, even if the Beta firefighter wouldn’t have been able to stop him if he tried.
There was one thing though.
Watching his Omega tell Dawson off was very hot. Everything about Lieutenant Matt Casey was hot.
Being surrounded by firefighters almost his whole life, Kelly never had a thing for firefighters. Probably because he’s always had Matt. Kelly had a thing for Matt since day one.
Now though, Kelly could say he had a thing for firefighters. Well, his firefighter.
“So, Severide,” called Cruz from the driver’s seat of the rig. “Heard you’re from the area?”
They were on the way to a school for one of Hermann’s kids as apparently the older Alpha’s Omega was at a different school for another one of their kids. Kelly was just being introduced to the remaining two members of truck when Hermann asked if they could go for a ride.
Matt didn’t even ask, simply looked the man over and then told everyone to gear up and let’s go.
“From who?” asked Otis, looking at his best friend in confusion. “We just met him.”
“Can’t be a firefighter in Chicago and not recognize the name Severide, Candidate,” replied Cruz, easily driving the rig.
Andy snorted. “Yeah, Benny made himself pretty well-known before he retired.”
Otis’ eyes widened, looking at the SEAL in shock. “You’re related to Benny Severide?”
“He’s my shitty Sire,” answered Kelly with a shoulder shrug.
“Shitty, indeed,” mumbled Matt, keeping his eyes on the road.
“Not a fan?” chuckled Mouch, turning around to look at the blonde Omega.
“No,” was the succinct reply. Kelly hid his fond smile. Benny was a shitty sire, but Matt probably hated him because of their separation more than anything.
The rig stopped. “Hermann, we’re here. Keep your radio on.”
“You got it, Lieutenant!”
Hermann hopped out and hustled inside.
“So, why the Navy?” Cruz asked next. Matt rolled his eyes and decided to get out and stretch his legs. Kelly figured the last thing Matt wanted to hear was the same crap that kept them apart for almost a full decade. He didn’t blame him. Kelly wasn’t a fan about it either, but he was also used to answering this question.
“Got into trouble one too many times as a kid. Didn’t have much of a…well, you know how it is.”
“Mated?” asked Mouch, nodding to where a bite mark was peeking out from Kelly’s jacket.
Kelly nodded, giving Mouch a cool look over. “I am.”
“Whoa. Your mate bit you on your wrist gland?” Otis asked in shock, his eyes widening as he stared at it. “That’s so rare!”
Kelly shrugged.
“How long have you been mated?” Mouch asked, making himself comfortable in his seat. Kelly began to feel like he was being interrogated. Scarier men than Mouch have tried to break Kelly and failed. If Kelly had to decide how he felt being ‘interrogated’ by a few firefighters, he’d have to say amused.
“Seven years.”
Cruz whistled, adjusting his head cover as he shot Kelly an impressed look. “Wow man. That’s awesome. Must be hard serving and being mated though?”
“You have no idea,” Kelly sighed, leaning back and looking out the window. He saw Matt leaning against a sign not too far off, arms crossed, frowning, and looking at his feet.
Kelly knew that look.
Matt was lost in thought and it was on a topic he wasn’t fond about. Were it fond thoughts, Matt would have a little smile tugging at the corners of his lips. He’d also be looking up.
Up, in the sky.
Up, at Kelly.
Kelly can recall many times he’d get the feeling he should look down while holding Matt and he’d find himself looking into blue, blue eyes. They’d sparkle and draw him in. Sometimes Kelly would rub their noses together, other times he’d steal a kiss freely given.
“Got a problem with our lieutenant?” asked Cruz, voice firm. Kelly spared the Hispanic Alpha a look. The man was glaring for once. Gone was his polite demeanor.
Andy, who’s been silent this whole time, finally spoke up. “Kelly would never have a problem with Matty.”
“You sure about that?” asked Otis, also glaring.
“Yeah,” chuckled Andy. He hiked a thumb at Kelly. “Kelly may be a SEAL and one tough mother fucker, but he’s a total sweetheart.”
Kelly rolled his eyes. Reaching over, he gave his best friend a shove. “Darden, shut up.”
“Rude! I was defending your honor!”
“You’re the last person I want defending my honor.”
Maybe the Beta was trying to break the tension with his crappy humor, but Kelly didn’t need his rescue. He wasn’t helpless and could handle himself. He wasn’t some punk Alpha kid anymore. He was a badass SEAL who took names- lives, even.
Three Alphas who saw Matt as family, protected his Omega? Kelly could only respect them.
They were here for him in ways Kelly couldn’t be.
Hell, they were a better family to Matt than his actual blood relations.
“Truck 81 to Main.”
Before anyone could move, Matt was already climbing in and reaching for the radio.
“Go for Truck 81.”
Kelly watched as his Omega thrived in his element. The man was tense, but still had a fluid movement in his motions as he made a gesture to Cruz. In response, the Alpha started up the rig, just as the school doors opened, Herman saying something over his shoulder as he rushed back to them. Andy was quick to throw the door open for the man to climb into his seat and slam the door shut.
“We’ll talk about this tomorrow when I get home, Lee Henry!”
Kelly saw a teen wave them off as the Ladder Truck was taking off.
“Almost missed your ride,” chuckled Otis.
“Nah. You wouldn’t have left without me.”
From the front, Cruz snorted. “Wouldn’t be so sure about that Hermann.”
“Look alive 81,” warned Matt. “Got ourselves a warehouse fire. You know the drill. Kelly,” Blue eyes met his own. Goddamn is his Omega hot in officer mode. “You’re with me.”
---
The warehouse fire was thankfully easy to contain, and then smother out. They were able to get any folks stuck out and to safety before anyone got burnt. At one point, Matt did have to tell Kelly to stay by the rig as he had to go into the building himself.
Matt saw the tensing jaw and flexing hands. His Alpha didn’t want him going anywhere near danger. Well tough shit, that was his job. Kelly didn’t have a right to tell him what to do.
But then, Kelly nodded, crossing his arms as he leaned against their rig. “I’ll see you in a bit.”
Nodding, Matt spun around, his body already acting on autopilot as it checked over his gear and ensured he was good to go inside.
Perhaps five minutes went by before Matt was back outside, carrying an unconscious Alpha between him and Cruz. It was the last person out, so the other Engines that arrived, began to shoot water at the building behind them as he and Cruz carried their victim to the paramedics.
“I found him passed out,” said Cruz to Gabby, because of course she’d be here. “He had a pulse and it didn’t look like anything hit him. May have passed out before the fire started.”
Matt took a step back and looked for Kelly. The Alpha stood exactly where Matt left him.
Holy crap. There was something very empowering about his big, bad Alpha listening to him. Matt couldn’t force Kelly to do anything. If he could, a lot of things would be different right now. Kelly listened because he chose to listen, to respect Matt’s wishes.
As his Alpha, Kelly had every right to tell him to quit his job. It was one of the shitty things about their society that Matt had been worried about when he first started out as a firefighter. That despite their separation, the second Kelly found out what he was doing, he’d tell him to stop. That it was too dangerous.
Which would be really fucking hypocritical of him, seeing what his Alpha ended up doing as a career.
And yet…his Alpha hasn’t said anything. Didn’t do anything.
“Lieutenant, are you…purring?” Cruz asked, beside him suddenly.
Matt blinked, his purring stopping immediately. “Let’s get ready to clean up.”
“Uh yeah. Sure Lieutenant.”
Jesus. It’s been literal years since he’s purred. Probably the last time had been the night before Kelly left. Omegas only purr when they are happy.
Matt was…happy.
—-
By the time they made it back to the station, it was dinner time. Otis hustled into the kitchen and began to prepare the meal, while the others went about inventorying. Kelly looked around for Matt, but didn’t see his love anywhere.
“He’s in his quarters,” answered Andy.
“Didn’t ask.”
“Please,” scoffed Andy with an eye roll. “I’m fluent in Kelly. Go talk to him so I can work in peace.”
With a fond eye roll, Kelly left his best friend in peace. It was easy enough to find the officer quarter’s tucked in the back. Matt’s blinds were up and his door open, while he was hunched over his desk doing paperwork.
Walking up to the doorway, he leaned on the frame with his arms crossed. Kelly knew he walked with a silent step, a by-product from his training. He actually had to force himself to make noise when he walked if he wanted to be heard.
But right now he wanted to watch his Omega just a little bit longer. This was a part of Matt he wasn’t familiar with and he was curious about it.
Through the course of the ride along, Kelly learned a lot. Not only did Matt grow up into a gorgeous man, but one who led his team with empathy and fierce determination. Kelly didn’t like a single second of Matt being inside a burning building and had to force himself to stay still instead of following his Omega inside and dragging him back out.
The team that claimed Matt as their Lieutenant were protective and a tad bit ridiculous, but Kelly felt more settled that there was more than just Andy watching Matt’s back.
Kelly could also now scent the warm cinnamon scent from his content Omega, and that, more than anything, proved to Kelly that Matt was doing exactly what he wanted to do. He would never take that from him.
“You just gonna stand there and watch me like a creeper?”
“Maybe.”
Matt looked up with a, dare he say, fond look.
“Kelly, you can come in.”
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
Who was he to deny his mate anything?
Walking in, Kelly sat at the foot of Matt’s bed.
Completely abandoning his reports, Matt gave Kelly his full attention. “You know you’re always welcome in my nest.”
“Even after everything?” Kelly asked in disbelief.
“You’re still my Alpha.”
Hearing Matt claim him, it felt like the wind was knocked right out of him. Kelly couldn’t stop his hand from reaching out and cupping a soft cheek with his scarred hands. Matt didn’t even hesitate to lean into the hand.
“Even when you’re an idiot.”
Kelly rolled his eyes and pulled his hand back. It didn’t make it far before Matt caught it and held it between them. Calloused fingers turned his hand palm up and pushed the sleeve of his shirt up.
There, between them, was Matt’s mark on him, claiming Kelly for all to see. Kelly heard Matt’s purr start and if that wasn’t the best thing to hit his ears right now, he didn’t know what was. His Omega was happy. Kelly didn’t even dare to think he was forgiven, but at least his mate could still be happy in his presence like when they were younger.
“I’m proud of you,” Kelly whispered, not wanting to break the bubble of peace and happiness between them. Their scents were mingling and bringing a peace to him he hasn’t felt in years either.
Soft cheeks flushed. Kelly wanted to touch them again.
“I’m proud of you, too. SEAL, huh?”
Kelly nodded. “It-
“What the hell is this?” Demanded the paramedic from earlier. She was in the doorway, looking at him and then their hands. Kelly saw the challenge in her posture and sharp scent. Through the years, Kelly has smelled many different Alphas who have perfected the art of weaponizing their scents and this random Alpha paled in comparison. Her sharp lemon scent barely registered.
No, what really stood out was the lack of scent and purr coming from Matt. All Omegas had the ability to hide their scent when they were uncomfortable or threatened. The purring was more controllable, but the lack of both put Kelly in protective mode.
“Paramedic Dawson, we were having a private discussion,” Matt stated firmly, eyes narrowing. “Please allow us to fin-
“Matt, you can’t just have random Alphas come in here,” she interrupted, taking a condescending tone as she took a step into his quarters.
“Take another step in here and we’re gonna have a problem,” growled Kelly, slowly standing to his full height.
“Kelly,” Matt called, pulling at his hand.
“You’ve said your piece earlier Matty. And she didn’t listen.” Kelly looked her over, not too concerned by anything. She may know a thing or two, what Alpha didn’t? But Kelly was a trained weapon. Probably the only person who could take him on within Chicago City Limits was Jay. “Now, it’s my turn.”
“Who do you think you are?” Spat the female Alpha. If eyes could spit fire, her’s would be deadly. “Just because your Sire is some hot-shot, doesn’t give you the right to come to our station, in my Omega’s ne-
Looking back, Kelly probably could’ve handled things differently, but if given the chance, he would do the same thing all over again.
In the blink of an eye, he had her by the throat and on the ground. He didn’t care that his roar was loud enough to grab the attention of others as he pinned her with ease. Kelly couldn’t even blame his inner Alpha on anything, because he was very much in control. If he weren’t, there’d be blood.
“Whoa, man! Let her go!”
“What’s going on?”
“Holy shit!”
“Matt, are you okay?”
“I’m fine Andy.”
“Dude, get off of her!”
Kelly growled when the others tried to get closer, to no doubt pull him off. Before he got up, he had something to say.
“That is twice you have disrespected him in my presence. Lesser fools have been hospitalized for less,” he started, not phased at her trying to pull his hand from her throat. He wasn’t suffocating her, she could still breathe. Kelly was using just enough pressure to give the illusion that he was. It didn’t take much to break a windpipe. “But to go as far as to claim him as your own?”
Those around them were silent now.
“Kelly,” Matt called out gently, coming closer.
“Whoa Lieutenant! Don’t get closer!”
“Casey, he’s crazy!”
“Guys, he’s fine!”
Kelly felt Matt’s hand on his shoulder before it made its way to the hand around the paramedic’s throat.
“Let her go, Kelly. She’s not worth it.”
“But you are,” he said back, not looking away from the scared eyes below him. He could still see her defiance. “I have the right to defend you.”
“W-what?” Gasped Dawson, partially scoffing. “Like you’re h-his Alpha, or s-something?”
Kelly smirked. He watched as she paled and began to realize her mistake. Ignoring the exclamations around them, he leaned closer and spoke just loud enough for her to hear.
“Come near my Omega again about anything that isn’t strictly work related and there will be nothing that will stop me. The law stands behind me when it comes to defending what’s mine. And he’s mine, got it?”
Releasing her, he stood and let Matt pull him a couple steps away. Kelly was tempted to kiss Matt silly, like would always do in his possessive frenzy. But he held back.
They were at his place of work and Kelly was still in control.
“Casey! My office,” called out the raspy voice from his mate’s boss. “And bring your Alpha with you.”
Matt looked up at Kelly. In response, Kelly raised a questioning eyebrow. Matt turned back to his Chief. “Coming, sir.”
Kelly was twenty-five when he decided he wanted to hear Matt gasp out those same words to him.

And? What do we think?
Hopefully not too many typos…I’m supposed to be sleeping right now, but I was inspired and had to get it written down.

Chapter Text
For all the years that Matt was able to keep his mate secret, in a single day…Kelly undid it.
After the meeting with Boden- which was really weird, first and foremost. Matt was ready to get a scolding about his Alpha attacking someone, when instead the Chief asked if Matt wanted to file a report against Gabby for her harassing behavior. Apparently, the Chief has been waiting for Matt to stop by and make a report for a while now. Various folks had already stopped by and reported their own observations over the years.
Years.
Kelly looked at him in disbelief when he heard that. Matt could only shrug and say he hadn’t noticed anything until recently. He wouldn’t have noticed her trying to entice him with her scent since he was mated. He never gave her reason to believe he was looking for an Alpha. And , why would he think someone would try to court him when his Alpha’s claim was always displayed for everyone to see?
Both Alphas stared at him incredulously.
Chief Boden cleared his throat and fondly shook his head. “Be that as it may, would you like to make a report?”
His first reaction was ‘no’, not wanting to rock the boat any. But Gabby took that out of his hands, didn’t she? She not only rocked the boat, she almost capsized it.
“Yes,” he said confidently, holding his hand out for the paperwork. While he filled it out, the Chief took the time to speak to his Alpha. Matt listened to it with half a ear.
“How is it this is the first you’ve stopped by?”
“It’s a long story, sir. But I’m glad I’m here now.”
“Fair enough. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. There will be no repercussions for your response to Alpha Paramedic Dawson’s behavior to your mate.”
Kelly gave one of those acknowledgement grunts Alphas were famous for. Finishing up his report, he handed it to the Chief just as older Alpha said, “I hope you consider the Chicago Fire Department after you separate from the Navy, son.”
Matt looked at his Alpha curiously. Would the other man consider working for the CFD? What would that even be like?
What would it be like living in the same city?
Wait. They’d be living together, wouldn’t they?
He’d have his Alpha at arm’s reach.
“Of course, sir,” Kelly answered, standing up and holding his hand out. “It was great to see you again.”
Chief stood and returned the shake with a friendly smile. Matt stood just as Boden said, “You have one hell of an Omega, son.”
“Oh, I know,” agreed Kelly, shooting Matt a smile.
Matt flushed, but held his head up and said, “Well if the Alpha-folk are done talking about me like I’m not even here, is there anything else, Chief?”
“There is not,” chuckled the Chief. He covered the new paperwork on his desk with his hand and said in a serious voice, “This will be taken seriously, Lieutenant. You know I run a no-tolerance house. If anything else happens, please stop by.”
“Yes, sir.”
But anyways…after their meeting with Boden, they walked to the front area of the house. Kelly stopped him just as they were going to pass the front doors.
“Matty, I need to go check up on Jay. Oh come on, don’t make that face.”
“I’m not making a face,” he responded, well aware he was making a face. He still wasn’t sure how he felt about his mate with an unmated Omega. Given, the guy seemed nice enough and he definitely didn’t take Kelly’s BS. But still…
“Yes,” whispered Kelly, pulling Matt into his arms. Kelly rested his forehead against Matt’s and stared into his eyes. Matt could feel his heartbeat faster at the thought of his Alpha kissing him. They were so close now! Barely more than a couple inches between their lips. “You are.”
“No idea what you’re talking about, Alpha.”
Kelly chuckled, rubbing their noses together and not kissing Matt. What’s an Omega got to do around here to get a kiss?!
“Sure, Omega. Listen, I know Jay can take care of himself. He’s covered my ass more times than I can count while on a mission, but he’s still Jay .”
Matt sighed, shoulders slumping. “You’re a good man, Kelly Severide.”
“You saying that means the world to me, Matty.”
And yet, Matt still didn’t get a kiss.
Huffing, Matt put his arms around Kelly’s neck and pulled him down some- when did his Alpha get so tall?- and tasted his Alpha’s lips for the first time in what felt like forever. He couldn’t help the happy purr that started when Kelly pulled him flush to him and took over the kiss.
In some ways, the kiss was everything he remembered, but it was also different.
Back when they were teens, Kelly’s kisses were breath-taking. Matt was always left gasping to his Alpha’s smug pleasure.
But right now, Matt felt like his very soul was affected. Not that Kelly was trying to suck it from his body, but that he was pleasing the very soul that made up Matt. If a kiss was this intense, what would sex be like?
Kelly broke the kiss, resting his forehead on Matt’s again. The Alpha was hardly out of breath.
Matt pouted.
“How about,” Kelly started, stealing a quick kiss. “we go for drinks tomorrow night? That way you can get to know Jay? And we can spend more time together?”
“He’ll be there!” shouted Andy, peeking around the wall from the common area.
“Molly’s at 8pm,” grinned Hermann, his head joining Andy’s.
“And don’t be late,” quipped Andy with a wink.
Matt extracted himself from his Alpha’s arms, even though he really didn’t want to. “Okay, fine. But…Kelly?”
“Hm?”
But before Matt could say anything, the alarm went off. “Nevermind. See you tomorrow!”
Without a doubt, Matt knew Kelly watched him go. He could feel those piercing eyes watching until the doors closed behind him and he was climbing into his officer seat.
Matt had a lot to think about before they met up tomorrow night. Because despite everything that’s happened in the last several hours, Matt wasn’t exactly sure where things stood between them.
Kelly was still in the Navy.
And Matt was going to be devastated when his Alpha left.
Matt was twenty-five when he worried about his future.
----
“I don’t wanna third wheel your date,” complained Jay, but still followed him to Molly’s Bar. The unmated Omega was dressed comfortably in black jeans, a dark blue button up that made his eyes pop, and a comfortable jacket.
“You’re not third wheeling my date,” Kelly sighed, rolling his eyes. It’s been the same whining since Kelly told him to get dressed. “I want you and Matt to get to know each other.”
Jay blinked. Immediately his pout formed into a cheshire grin. “So, you’re third wheeling my date, then.”
“More like a play date.”
“You’re a jackass, Kelly Severide.”
Kelly shrugged as he held the door open. “And you’re a menace.”
Laughing, the Omega hardly noticed the attention that fell on them as they walked in. Jay knew how to be attentive, he was a goddamn Ranger after all. But Kelly noticed that when it was the two of them in a casual setting, the Omega tended to relax. Without a doubt, Kelly knew Jay could jump into action and defend himself if he needed to.
Kelly had asked Jay about it during the early days of their friendship. They’d been on a two-day shore leave in Italy before their next joint mission, and Jay being Jay shrugged. He went on to say that being ‘on’ at all times was exhausting, that he trusted Kelly ever since the Alpha watched his back when his Heat hit thanks to shitty suppressants.
It wasn’t rare for Omegas to trust Alphas they weren’t related or mated to, but Kelly never expected another Omega that wasn’t Matt to trust him so much.
Though Kelly could probably thank the fact they were more often in a war zone watching each other’s back. It’s hard not to trust someone after that.
“Oh, I see him,” Jay said, grabbing Kelly’s arm and pulling the taller Alpha along. Kelly just let himself be dragged to the high table top, used to Jay and his antics. “Matt! Hi! Hope we’re not late. Sit, Severide.”
“I’m not a dog,” he grumbled, but took his seat beside Matt anyways. When he met Matt’s amused gaze, he huffed, rolling his eyes. “Don’t you start, too.”
“What? I wasn’t going to say anything,” argued Matt, waving down a server. Jay snickered as he took a seat across from them. “And you’re not late.”
“Oh good!” Jay ordered himself a draft, then put all his attention on Matt. “Is there a story here? About dogs and Severide?”
Matt went to answer, but before he could everyone around them cheered suddenly. Kelly and Jay both tensed, eyes jumping around to see what was happening. When the gentle hand from Matt landed on Kelly’s thigh, his eyes snapped to Matt.
“It’s okay.” Matt leaned in so he didn’t have to shout. “They’re celebrating Intelligence’s latest bust.”
“Intelligence?” asked Jay, straining to look over the tall crowd of predominantly Alphas and Betas. “Who’s that?”
“It’s a unit in the CPD, housed out of precinct 21.”
Kelly relaxed, putting his hand over Matt’s and giving a small squeeze in thanks. He may be on leave, but his body has a lot of muscle memory and trauma that causes it to act immediately.
“Cool. But that’s not why we’re here.” Jay turned back around. Resting his chin on his propped up hand and smiled. “Got any embarrassing stories?”
Matt threw his back, laughing. “Tons, but if you wanna hear them, you won’t hear it from me.”
Kelly shot Jay a smug look.
“Andy though?” Matt pointed to the Beta at the bar and winked. “he’d probably spill.”
Jay shot Kelly a smug look. “I’ll be sure to ask, since Kelly got to hear all my number 1 hits from Will.”
“Will?”
Jay nodded, then pointed to further a couple tables over. “The ginger over there. That’s my brother.”
“Dr. Halstead? Whoa, small world.”
“Tell us about it. When I found out Severide came from Chicago and how close our childhood homes were, it was fucking insane that we never met sooner.” Sipping at his draft, he eyed Kelly thoughtfully. “Kelly said he was a bit of fuck up, but he’s too goody-goody now.”
Matt stared at his Alpha in surprise. “Goody-goody?”
“Control, remember?” answered the Alpha, sparing them both a glance before going back to his glaring.
“What are you glaring at?” asked Matt, looking around, but not spotting it.
Jay pointed to the bar. “That Alpha-chick behind the bar. She owe you money or something?”
“No.”
Matt felt his cheeks redden slightly, realizing who Kelly was glaring at. He sipped at his own beer and went back to conversing with Jay. He had to admit, the other Omega was really easy to get along with. They had a similar humor and commiserate over being male omegas once their beer made their tongues a little looser. At one point they ganged up against Kelly and his ‘alpha-ness’, to which the Alpha rolled his eyes and went to get them water.
Jay waited until the crowd mostly hid the SEAL, then asked Matt the question he’s been dying to ask for the last hour.
“You already forgive him, don’t you?”
Matt sobered up a bit, taking the Omega Ranger seriously. “What makes you say that?”
“Well,” Jay started off, “first and foremost, my scent wouldn’t have been on my Alpha if he pissed me off. The last thing I would want to do is scent him.”
Matt ducked his head in embarrassment. “Kelly scented me !”
“Well you wouldn’t have allowed it if you were upset at him. Scenting works both ways.”
“Anything else?” Matt asked.
“You look at him like he’s your beginning and your end.” Jay scoffed softly. “It’s a little sickening, but also…kinda sweet. I’m glad he’s earned your forgiveness. Maybe he won’t be such a grumpy-grump anymore.”
Laughing, Matt shook his head. “Don’t hold your breath. My Alpha has been a grumpy sort since a young age.”
“Well shit,” cursed Jay, snapping his fingers. “The rest of the crew prayed differently.”
“The crew?”
“Yeah, it’s a mix of my Ranger Team and Severide’s SEAL team. We- oh, well. That’s all I can really say without starting to dance on national security’s very fine line. Sorry.”
Matt shrugged. There really wasn’t much he could do about that. He was a civilian and they defended the country. “Any lucky partner in your life, Jay?”
“Nah,” sighed the Omega, shrugging. “I may be surrounded by some of the toughest Alphas and Betas in the world, but I’d rather get shot again than be courted by them.”
Matt looked at his rowdy team at the bar and nodded. “I know what you mean.”
“An Omega after my own heart,” flirted Jay, holding his glass up. Matt laughed, tapping his own against it.
It was at that time Kelly returned, setting waters on the table. He made sure both Omegas drank at least half of their respective glasses before Jay decided to check in with his brother. It also allowed the mated couple some time together.
“So, what do you think about Jay, now?”
Matt gave a nod as he leaned against Kelly’s side. The Alpha had chosen not to sit back down, but stay standing by Matt’s bar stool. The bar stool was at the perfect height to let Matt rest his head on Kelly’s shoulder. Kelly wrapped his arms around Matt to the Omega’s delight. “He’s fun.”
“Weird way to say ‘menace’, but agreed.”
Kelly grinned when Matt chuckled, hiding his laugh in Kelly’s neck. “You’re mean.”
“I’m nice.”
Matt pulled away to give the Alpha an incredulous look.
“Alright, fine. I’m nice to you. But you’re cute and I’m not a monster.”
“I’m only cute ?”
Kelly leaned down slightly so that they’re noses were touching. “You’re also amazing, intelligent, sexy, and mine . Better?”
“Yes.”
Kelly blinked, the only outward surprise that Matt was accepting Kelly’s claim. Sure, the previous night, Kelly had been possessive, but that had been special circumstances. He’d honestly thought if they were in a casual setting without the threat of another interested Alpha that overstep their bounds, Matt would have his walls back up.
But here he stood with his Omega in his arms, agreeing to Kelly’s claim, and giving that look that Kelly always wanted to kiss silly. Did this mean his Omega forgave him?
“Ma-
“What the hell are you doing in my bar?” growled the Alpha Paramedic from yesterday. Kelly’s grip around Matt tightened.
“Stand down, Dawson. I invited him,” Hermann answered, popping up beside her. “Of course, the Lieutenant’s mate would be welcome here.”
A Beta who looked suspiciously similar to the female Alpha, grinned at Kelly. He had an earring in his ear, dark clothes, and Kelly spied a badge on his waistband. A police officer of some sort. Did she call the cops on him? For what?
Kelly relaxed when the man held his hand out in a friendly greeting. “You’re Casey’s Alpha? Nice to finally meet you, man! I’m Antonio Dawson.”
“Tonio!”
“Kelly Severide.” He reluctantly let go of Matt to shake the cop’s hand.
“You got yourself an awesome Omega, man.”
Kelly could see the grin that split Matt’s lips at the man’s words, before he shot the man a playful glare. “He’s mine, detective .”
“No worries about that, Lieutenant . He’s a bit too ‘Alpha’ for my tastes.” Antonio’s eyes looked around the room before he saw someone more his ‘tastes’ and pointed. “However, that’s more like it.”
Kelly and Matt looked over before chuckling when they saw him pointing at a familiar face.
The younger Dawson who also looked, frowned. “Who is that?”
“That’s Dr. Halstead’s younger brother,” answered Hermann.
Antonio blinked in surprise. “No, shit?”
Matt elbowed his Alpha and shot him a pointed look. And that’s when Kelly realized, Matt did forgive him. Because instead of being confused, he understood exactly what his little Omega wanted. He understood it in a way his body understood it needed air to breath. It was instinct.
It was their bond.
Clearing his throat, Kelly offered to introduce the detective to his partner.
“And how do you know each other?” asked Antonio.
“Work together,” came the simple answer.
Hermann gaped. “There’s Omegas in the SEALs?”
“What, don’t think we could join?” asked Matt, eyebrow raised. When the older Alpha began to sputter, Matt chuckled. “Just messing with you, Hermann.”
“That’s mean, Lieutenant,” groused Hermann as Antonio gave him a pat on the back.
Not liking that she’s being ignored, Gabby cleared her throat. “Can we talk, Cas-
“Severide!” Jay interrupted, pushing his way through and straight to the Alpha. “I need $20!”
“I’m not a bank, Halstead.”
“Don’t be stingy, you’ll get it back.” Jay made grabby hands for the Alpha’s wallet. Kelly easily dodged them and turned his partner to the group around them. “Halstead, meet some of the people that work with Matt.”
Like a switch was thrown, the Omega stood straighter and gave them all a polite smile. “Uh, hi. Jay Halstead. Yes, related to Will Halstead. And you are?”
“Hermann,” greeted the older Alpha. “We met the other day when you were in here. But I ride with the Lieutenant.”
“Oh yeah! Your bar is great, man!” Jay shook his hand and then turned to the only woman in the group. “Ma’am?”
Her frown deepened, crossing her arms over her chest. Jay’s eyebrow rose at the sudden increase in Alpha pheromone, easily ignoring it. “It’s Gabby.”
Jay was going to reply, but the last member of their group shoved her a bit with a biting, “Cut it out, Gabby.” Then the Beta…Beta? Jay felt something off about the man as he held his hand out and gave a kind smile. “Antonio Dawson, sorry about my sister.”
“Nice to meet you,” Jay answered, returning the greeting. Kelly saw when Jay tilted his head slightly in interest. Well then, guess his work here is done.
Looking down at his Omega, Kelly made up his mind. He leant down and nuzzled the crown of Matt’s head. Kelly was pleased when he felt more than heard the purr come from Matt in response.
Oh yes, Kelly definitely made his mind up.
Kelly Severide was twenty-five when he decided he was going to have sex again with his Omega.

Despite them only having sex the one time and so long ago, Matt definitely knew the signs for what his Alpha wanted. Kelly had always been the affectionate sort. So at first, Matt would have to admit he didn’t notice. He was relishing the affection that he’d been missing for the last several years. Going from nothing to exactly what his body was craving- a simple touch , was more than distracting.
But then, when his Alpha groped at his hip, fingers brushing his skin under his shirt did Matt finally pick up his Alpha’s desires.
Because of course his Alpha wasn’t going to say it. No, Kelly usually let his mind- and hands- wander about until Matt responded. At least, that’s how it was when they were younger and Kelly wanted to make out.
Now, at their age…Matt was more than sure Kelly was aiming for something more than kissy faces.
Matt definitely was.
This forced celibacy wasn’t any fun. Especially , when it came to his Heat. Matt had been miserable! Mind overcome with the desire to be bred and so much heat. Heat. Heat . Nothing would satisfy a mated Omega except for their Alpha’s knot.
Learning the hard way about something he’d known in theory, thanks to the somewhat decent dynamics class back in high school, was shit.
Matt frowned, turning a glare on his Alpha. And because his Alpha was already so attuned with him, Kelly noticed right away.
“What?”
“We need to talk.”
Kelly stared for a moment then slowly nodded. “Maybe somewhere more quiet?”
“That’s…acceptable. Come on.”
Matt made short work of getting them in his truck and back to his place. The ride was thankfully quiet. Kelly probably had a lot on his mind too, so Matt took the time to organize his thoughts. He had to make sure that he was prepared. He remembered how Kelly had a way with distracting Matt when the Alpha wanted other things. His Alpha could be very persuasive when he wanted to be.
“Nice place.”
Matt looked up from where he was putting away his keys. “Ah, thanks. Make yourself comfortable, I’ll get us something to drink.”
Kelly caught Matt’s hand before the Omega could go more than a step toward the kitchen. Matt looked at their hands first then up at Kelly. “Kelly?”
“You’re mad, again.”
Well, there wasn’t any point in hiding it.
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
Matt’s eyes narrowed as he stepped into his Alpha’s personal space. He tilted his head up to maintain eye contact. “Are you serious? Did you think it was just a simple forgive and forget?”
“Well-”
“Kelly Benjamin Severide!”
“Jesus, Matty,” winced Kelly, but not backing away or tilting his head in submission. “What did I do? This time?”
Shaking off the hand holding his, Matt went to shove at Kelly’s chest, not moving the Alpha a single bit. Kelly quickly grabbed Matt’s wrists and held them against his chest. Matt knew of Kelly's strength and that Matt wouldn't ever be able to move the man if his Alpha didn't want to be moved. But Kelly was always able to give him the illusion- because that's what it's always been- that they were equals. But Matt always knew. He just hated that he was being reminded about it when he was angry!
“Talk to me, Omega.”
“You left me, Alpha!” Matt finally snapped. “You left and I was all alone! Do you know what it does to an Omega to have their Alpha leave them right after they’re bonded? I felt like I was a failure! That there was something wrong about me because I couldn’t keep my Alpha around. Forget what everyone else was saying, my own brain was working against me!”
Kelly frowned. “Andy neve-
“ANDY ISN’T MY ALPHA!”
Kelly’s mouth snapped shut.
Breathing heavily, Matt didn’t even care that the tears he’s been holding back since the grocery store finally began to roll down his cheeks. He didn’t care that he was clutching tightly to Kelly’s shirt to either push him away or keep him close.
Matt was upset and he’s allowed to do whatever he wants right now.
“A month after you left, my Heat hit. And nothing, absolutely nothing helped. I cried, begged, yelled for you, because you’re the only one who can soothe it. But no matter what I did, you never showed. It’s awful, Alpha. I fell into such an awful depression after my first Heat. And it was all because of your godawful Sire and your shitty Alpha pride.
“Every Heat that followed- I can’t even say that it’s gotten better. I wanted to go on Suppressants to go at least one time where I didn’t feel like utter crap because of something that wasn’t even my fault. But I didn't. I couldn't. I wasn't allowed to unless my Alpha gave me permission. So yeah,” Matt scoffed, hands finally pulling Kelly down so they were eye level. “I’m still upset even if I did forgive you.”
Matt finally dropped his head on Kelly’s chest and cried. He cried for his younger self and the Omega he became today. He cried for his Alpha and because of his Alpha. He didn’t know for how long he cried, but at some point, Kelly had him wrapped in his arms and rumbling quietly.
By the time he registered that Kelly moved them to his couch and that he was straddling the Alpha’s lap, tucked into his neck, Matt felt as if a gigantic weight was finally removed from his shoulders. He was surrounded in his Alpha’s scent, barely an inch away from Kelly’s neck gland. The very gland Matt chose not to mark.
Alphas only allowed their bonded mates to be this close to a vulnerable place. For as long as Matt can remember, Kelly always let him be close, even before their mating. Once upon a time, Matt did dream of leaving his bite on Kelly’s neck gland.
But then things happened the way he did, and his younger self got very jealous at the thought of some random Omega thinking they had a chance with his Alpha. Somewhere in his jealous mind, his instincts told him to bite Kelly’s wrist gland. That way, whenever the Alpha went to shake anyone’s hand, Alpha, Beta, or Omega, they’d know.
Kelly was taken and his Omega did not share.
“I’m sorry, Matt.”
Pulling away so he could sit up and meet Kelly’s gaze was harder to do than Matt expected. He felt so comfortable, the last thing he wanted to do was move.
“W-what?”
“I said,” Kelly chuckled, shaking his head in exasperation. “I’m sorry. For everything. Like you said the other day in the parking lot. It was shit for both of us, but you had it worse. I got to push through it, because I was the one who made the decision. I took that choice away from you. And I’m so sorry, Omega." Kelly dropped a kiss on Matt's forehead, his lips lingering a few seconds. "I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but you’ve always been the better one between us. I am more than grateful that I have you in my arms right now. I will do everything that is within my power to make sure it never happens again.”
“You can’t promise that,” whispered Matt, dropping his gaze.
Kelly moved his hand from Matt’s hip and with two fingers lifted Matt’s chin so they were making eye contact again. “But I am.”
Matt shook his head. “No. You’re on Shore Leave, remember? You’re going back.”
“That’s true,” Kelly agreed, nodding. “But that doesn’t mean we’re going to go back to not talking to each other. Not visiting. You’re not going to have another Heat without me, Omega. I promise.”
There’s no way Kelly can keep that promise, but Matt wanted to believe him. Part of him clung to the promise, while another part of him, the logical side, was doubtful.
“You don’t believe me,” Kelly observed, leaning back. Matt bit his lip. After a moment, he shook his head in the negative. “That’s fine. I’ll just have to prove it to you.”
Matt couldn’t say what part of him was in control right then, but apparently it was a lot bolder than Matt thought he had in him at the moment.
Moving closer so they were chest to chest again, one arm curled around a strong neck while his free hand reached up and tapped the Alpha’s lips sassily as he said in a low purr, “And just how are you planning on proving it to me?”
---
Kelly’s smirk was the only warning he gave his Omega. Using his quick reflexes and strength, he flipped them around so Matt’s back was on the couch and Kelly over him. The yelp that escaped Matt’s lips goaded him on as he leaned down so he was a breath away from the very lips he saw in his dreams every night.
“If you wanted a kiss, Matty, all you had to do was ask.”
“Don’t get smart,” scoffed his Omega. His tone may say one thing, but his body said another. Thighs parted, letting Kelly settle better against him. The scent of aroused Omega danced through his senses, telling him exactly how his Omega felt with their change in positions.
“That doesn’t sound like a question.”
“I’m not going to ask you to kiss me.”
“How about making out?”
“No.”
“You’re right. We should definitely have sex.”
“That’s- how- why are you like this?”
“Because I love you,” Kelly said seriously.
Matt blinked, but then the sweetest smile his Omega only saved just for him pulled at soft lips. “Shut up and kiss me, already.”
Kelly was already closing the distance between them before Matt even got to ‘kiss’. Kissing Matt was a religious experience. Kelly wasn’t religious in nature, but he’s always been faithful to his Omega. Not once in their separation was tempted or swayed to be close to another. Matt was his very reason for living.
Ever since he passed BUD/S, he’s learned to redirect his frustration and anger into a productive weapon for the US Government. He ripped men apart with his bare hands and caused the death of many enemies with a single shot to the head.
Kelly Severide was a weapon, but here in the arms of his Omega, he was an Alpha in love.
He worshiped his mate, chasing after the very air in his lungs.
“A-Al-p-pha,” Matt gasped between kisses, back arching.
A pleased rumble sounded from Kelly’s chest as he mouthed at the mating mark on Matt’s neck gland. Kelly could practically taste Matt on his tongue by how strong the Omega’s slick scented the air.
“God,” growled Kelly, his large hand working on Matt’s jeans. “I got you, Omega.”
“Your s-shirt,” was the stuttered demand, Matt pulling at the covering. “Want to f-feel you.”
Kelly didn’t want to put even a micro-inch between them, so with a single flick of his wrist, he ripped his shirt off of his body.
“Shit, you just got wetter, didn’t you,” Kelly asked, meeting blown pupils. There wasn’t much blue left to see. “Is my little Omega turned on?”
“Who wouldn’t be? You literally just ripped your shirt off of your body, Kelly. That’s fucking ho- ah! ”
Matt whimpered when one of Kelly’s fingers entered him. He’d been so distracted at the very hot scene his Alpha put on for him, he missed what was happening.
“So wet for me, aren’t you?” Kelly smirked, pulling his finger out and licking the very slick that’s been taunting his senses. “Shit you taste good.”
“Whoa! Kelly!” Matt protested as Kelly yanked at Matt’s jeans and pulling them off of slender legs. In quick succession, Matt’s boxers were ripped off of him, leaving him bare to his Alpha. “You didn’t have to rip those!”
“Maybe not,” agreed Kelly, grabbing one thigh and lifting the leg while moving himself further down the couch so he could grab the other leg as well. Matt’s Omegan cock lay erect on his stomach, but everything was glistening just that little bit from the Omega’s slick. Leaning down, Kelly licked the slick on the back of one thigh. “But worth it.”
Matt’s hand was in Kelly’s hair a second before his Alpha was enjoying his slick straight from the source. The Omega practically keened as his back arched in sheer pleasure.
“K-Kelly!”
“That’s it. Moan for me, Matty. Let me hear who you belong to as I wreck you.”
---
Matt couldn’t tell what was up and what was down. All he felt was endless pleasure.
He barely had time to breath before Kelly was doing something and took it away again. His Alpha was proving himself, alright.
He’s already made Matt orgasm twice and his Alpha still hasn’t penetrated him yet.
Well, things were about to change.
After all, Matt wasn’t just a submissive Omega.
“K-Kel-ls, w-wait,” he begged, tugging at the hair that was barely long enough to hold onto. “B-Bed.”
Kelly pulled off, his complete lower half of his face covered in slick. “You wanna move to the bed?”
Matt nodded, taking the time to catch his breath.
“Alright, hold on.”
At this point, his Alpha wasn’t just showing off, but making a point. With ease , Kelly got off of the couch with Matt in his arms. Not a sound of effort or lack of speed, as the Alpha held Matt under his thighs and walked out of the living room.
Matt will admit quietly and only in his head, but maybe the whole enlistment thing wasn’t so bad. Matt was a firefighter, he’s had to carry fully grown men of all dynamics out of burning buildings. It was a physically demanding task and not without a few grunts or stumbles. Hell, even the Alphas on his team have never carried someone this smoothly.
So, fine. He can concede at least that much.
Once Kelly made it to the bedroom, Matt wiggled to be let down.
Kelly pouted, but let Matt stand on his feet. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” smiled Matt, turning them around so Kelly’s back was to the mattress. “Just wanted to help you finish getting undressed. It’s not fair that I’m naked and you’re still wearing your jeans, Alpha.”
“Fair enough,” agreed Kelly, reaching down to shove the pants off, his boxer briefs with a very obvious wet stain on it going down as well. “Better?”
With a mischievous grin, Matt pushed Kelly back on to the mattress and climbed on top of him. “Much.”
Matt couldn’t help admiring his strong, handsome Alpha below him. It was surreal to have the man in reaching distance, let alone in his bed.
“Matt?”
“Hm?”
Kelly sat up, and in such a sweet move, rubbed their noses together. “What’s on your mind, my Omega?”
“You, my Alpha. Just… you .”
If Matt were honest, it was always Kelly on his mind. Now. Back then. And every moment in between. He could start to feel a heat rise up inside him, a desire for his Alpha to be inside him. Which sounded like such a good plan right now. His body didn’t disagree. Matt swore he could feel his slick doubled.
Sliding closer to where he felt his Alpha’s much larger arousal against his own, Matt tilted his head to the side, exposing his mark. Ignoring whatever embarrassment came forth, he asked, “Make love to me, Alpha? Please .”
“Always,” growled Kelly, tugging at Matt’s hips so he was on his knees. Freeing one of his hands, he grabbed his erection and directed it.
“L-Like this?” gasped Matt, eyes widening.
“You’re the one who straddled me, remember?”
“Yes, bu- fuck!” screamed Matt as Kelly snapped his hips up and pulled Matt down with the other. Kelly didn’t move, letting Matt catch his breath. “A little warning, next time?”
Kelly grunted, not agreeing or disagreeing. Just acknowledging that Matt said something. Opening an eye, ready to tell Kelly off, but then he saw that Kelly looked like he was in pain.
“What’s wrong?” Matt asked, both eyes wide open and hoping to see what was hurting his Alpha. He cupped Kelly’s cheek, forcing his Alpha to look at him. “Alpha?”
“Matty, either I let you adjust and stay silent or I fuck you into this mattress and talk.” Kelly’s eyes were narrowed as his hips thrusted slightly before Kelly caught himself again.
“Oh!” Matt blushed. Looking to the side, he mumbled with a sweet blush, “You…You can move.”
Matt Casey was twenty-five when his Alpha gave him more orgasms than he could count.
Notes:
I'll be honest. I thought this would be the last chapter, but Matt and Kelly decided to do other things, and now...to get the ending...we got another chapter ahead of us.
I'm sure you're all SO upset. Truly devastated. But we'll get through this together, no doubt.
As always, can't wait to hear y'all's thoughts!

Chapter Text
“When are you leaving?”
Kelly hummed thoughtfully, nosing gently into the blonde strands before him. “Thursday.”
“That’s in-
“Four days, yeah.”
Matt turned around, purring happily as he settled back in his favorite place. He ached in ways an extended twenty-four shift could never achieve. But he couldn’t really get as comfortable as he was ten seconds ago. He wasn’t ready to let Kelly go. Not today, and definitely not in four days.
Their combined scents were keeping him calm. He never thought he’d get to smell them like this again. He knew he missed it, but didn’t realize just how much until he could scent them again.
He reached up and grabbed the metal tags that hung from his Alpha’s neck. They weren’t the only new thing about his Alpha. Kelly had many new scars littering his body, even a few Matt knew were from bullet wounds. The thought that his Alpha could’ve been killed had crossed his mind many times through the night.
But then his mind would fog over in lust and feelings, to be thought about again later.
“You got that face again.”
Matt pouted. “Can you blame me?”
“No, but I told you earlier. We’re not ending things.” Kelly rubbed their noses together, rumbling to Matt’s purrs. “The only way that’ll happen is if you tell me to leave right now.”
“No!” Matt hissed, glaring up at him. “Don’t you dare.”
Kelly stole a kiss from angry lips, easily getting them to relax again. “Then I won’t.”
But can Matt truly believe it?
“Come visit me.”
Matt blinked, startled. When it finally registered what Kelly said, he pulled back slightly. “I don’t even know where you live.”
Kelly chuckled. “San Diego.”
Matt pulled away further, releasing the tags so he could stare down at his Alpha in shock. “ You live in California ? You ?”
“It’s not my first choice,” conceded Kelly with a sigh. “But I don’t have many options on where I’m stationed.”
Humming, Matt went back to playing with Kelly’s tags. Can they really do this? Be a real Bonded Pair, but long distanced? Wait…wouldn’t this make him a military spouse, or something? Was he ready for something like that ?
Given, he’s always been one, but never played an active role. There’s probably so much he’d have to learn. Not that he’s against learning, but it’s not something he’s ever thought he’d do.
To be honest, in those early years, he thought Kelly would be back after three years of enlisting. That’s how long his initial contract was. Three years, and then they’d…well, they would’ve figured it out.
Is this what they’re doing right now?
Figuring it out?
“Matty?”
“Oh, um, I’d have to check with the Chief.”
When Kelly sighed, he caught Matt’s hand and gave it a little squeeze. It made Matt’s heart beat faster because it forced him to focus. “Ma-
“I can’t just not show up for work,” came tumbling from anxious lips.
“I wasn’t going to suggest you go AWOL.”
“Oh, then what?”
“It’s going to take time for us to move past the separation. I acknowledge that. I’ve definitely broken your trust. And maybe I don’t have any right to ask you of this, but all I ask is that you give me a chance. If you need me to make up for it for the rest of our natural lives, I will.”
Matt was going to respond, but he felt a sharp sting of pain in his abdomen. A very familiar pain, but it didn’t make sense. His Heat wasn’t for another two months, and this felt like an After Heat cramp.
Did he have a mild heat or something?
“Matty? Omega?”
Matt shook his head, clearing his thoughts. He placed a calm hand on his Alpha’s chest, to stop him from sitting up.
There’s no way he’d have a heat and not realize it. It had to be just an after effect with their enthusiastic coupling over the last several hours.
“Sorry. It’s just a lot to…process.”
Kelly nodded. “I know. But we’re gonna get through this. Together.”
——
Jay looked over at his partner. The Alpha was always hard to read, even for him. He’s never seen anyone read the Alpha as easily as the man’s Omega. Matty was an Omega after his own heart.
The Fire Lieutenant was strong, smart, and sassy. Matt never let his Alpha get away with anything, but the love they shared, despite their history, was by all counts simply wonderful. All things Jay could get behind.
He’s wanted such a love for himself, but finding the right partner wasn’t easy. Not many wanted an Omega who could pass for an Alpha if he just hid his scent a little better.
But maybe an Alpha who hid his scent to be a Beta…
“Stop staring.”
Jay grinned, facing forward. “Already miss him?”
“What do you think?”
“I think that you want to go back there and kiss him like they do in all those cheesy movies.” Jay nodded backwards where their friends and family were watching them go through security. Jay was thankful Will was able to be off shift and drive them over, but what he wasn’t expecting was for a few others to meet them at the airport to say their goodbyes, too.
Kelly sighed, taking another step forward without turning around. “Yeah, maybe.”
“So, why won’t you?”
“If I do, I’m not getting on the plane.”
Jay nodded, patting the SEAL’s tense arm in consolation. The Alpha was extremely tense, no doubt forcing himself to stay in place and keep moving forward. Jay’s seen it a few times on mission, especially when the Alpha was injured or had to do something he didn’t want to do. They all did it.
“So, what’s this between you and Dawson?” Kelly looked at Jay out of the corner of his eye.
“What about it?”
“Don’t play stupid, Halstead.” Kelly hiked a thumb over their shoulder. “Why is he part of the ‘goodbye’ bandwagon?”
It was rare for Jay to blush despite it being fairly commonly seen on Omegas. He had little to no shame and nothing to really blush about.
Until today.
The thought of Antonio, a simple innocent thought, gets his heart racing.
“Shit…are you blushing?” Kelly actually turned his head to stare at Jay in wide eyed surprise. “You really like him that much?”
Jay kept his mouth shut and took a few steps forward, interested in the sign explaining the rules. The back of his neck had to be bright summer red, not unlike a sunburn with how hard he was blushing.
He didn’t even react when Kelly put an arm over Jay’s shoulders and pulled him to his side. It was one of the few ways Kelly ever showed affection with Jay. It was strictly platonic, if anything…it was brotherly.
“I’m happy for you, Jay.”
Jay looked up. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
They were now one person away from being able to put their bags on the conveyor belt.
“Thanks, Kelly.”
“Oh, don’t thank me yet. Wait, until I tell the others.”
“Shit.”
----
“Shit.”
Andy chuckled, rolling his eyes. “It’s not that bad, Matty.”
“I beg to fucking differ.” Matt helped up the pregnancy test, hand shaking slightly. It’s been almost two months since Kelly showed up in Chicago and something told him that he should check, just to be safe. He told Andy to meet him after shift, because he definitely would need moral support. Matt hadn’t been sure what he wanted when he made the decision to check, but now seeing the ‘+’ right in front of him, so many things were flying around in his head. “Do you know what this means?”
“I’m going to be an Uncle?”
Rolling his eyes, Matt shook his head. “I can’t work , Andy. They won’t let me fight fires or-
“Whoa! Matty, breath.” Andy was quick to cut off the panic attack he could glimpse right under the surface. “You know Boden wouldn’t just sideline you because you’re pregnant.”
“But-!”
“No. Way.” Andy slashed his hand in a downward motion, as if that was it. “We can go talk to him at the start of the next shift, alright? Kelly isn’t here, but if he were, you know he’d support you standing your ground.”
At the name of his Alpha, Matt groaned again. He dropped the test so he could cover his face with both his hands.
“You haven’t told him yet?”
“Andy.” Matt didn’t raise his head from his hands, but very calmly asked the Beta, “at what point between the last five minutes of me peeing on the stupid test and getting the results would I have had the chance to tell Kelly?”
“Good point. Let’s call him now!”
“Now?!” yelped Matt, head now rising to look at Andy in horror. “How am I going to tell him I’m pregnant?!”
Widening his eyes, Andy tilted his head in a way that was common for Omegas to do when showing submission to their Alphas and said, “Alpha, I’m pregnant.”
Matt really wanted to kick the Beta.
Hard .
“Here’s the thing. I wasn’t supposed to have a Heat when Kelly was here. Which means…”
“...shit. Matty, how are you pregnant?!” The Beta was now in the Omega’s space, patting him down as if that would answer his question.
“I don’t know! That’s the problem!”
Andy’s wide eyes were authentic now. “We need to go see Dr. Halstead.”
“You think?”
---
“Yo, Halstead! You seen Severide?”
Jay looked up from where he was cleaning his rifle. In the doorway stood one of their new young recruits. Though young, the Alpha easily stood over most of the team with ease. He was sweet and ease-going to the point that Jay may have adopted the blonde, often mothering him. Always asking if he ate or slept well, which confused the Alpha at first.
After all, to the rest of the team- both SEAL and Rangers, Jay was a Beta.
But once he saw that Jay did it to all of the youngest members and even Kelly at times, they all accepted it as one of Jay’s weird behaviors.
“He’s meeting with the Commander, why?”
“He’s got a call.”
Jay’s eyebrows shot up. “From who?”
“Guy says he’s Severide’s Omega.”
Grinning, Jay jumped to his feet. “I’ll take the call!”
Jay rushed to their main area where their main phone lines were set up. They were on a mission, but there was still a designated line for family to call when an emergency happened or if they needed to call home. Matt hadn’t had to call during a mission yet, but Jay wasn’t going to let Kelly miss the call because of shit timing.
“Severide is mated?” asked one of Jay’s fellow Rangers, looking to the “SEAL-side” with a surprised face. “I thought he was single?”
“You’d have to ask Halstead, man. He’s Severide’s partner.”
Jay ignored them and picked up the phone, connecting the call. “Matty?”
“Jay? Where’s Kelly? Is he okay?”
“He’s fine! Just talking to his Commander. Figured we could catch up until he’s free?”
It was silent over the phone, but then Matt sighed and what sounded like him sitting down heavily.
“Hey…is everything okay?”
“I…I don’t know. ”
Frowning, Jay leaned back in his seat. “Wanna talk about it? Or is this a Kelly only thing?”
“Yes.” was the tired response.
Jay chuckled. “Which one is it?”
“Both. You’re the only other Omega I know who gets it. You know, working in a field that’s strictly Alpha and Beta dominated. I would love to get your perspective, but…I need to talk to Kelly first.”
“Fair enough.” Jay glared at his nosy army buddies, smacking the hand reaching over to make the call connect to speakers away. He could hear the tension in Matt’s voice loud and clear. So, instead of trying to dig the information out, he figured a distraction was warranted. “Then how about you tell me about that Detective friend of yours?”
“Dete- you mean Antonio?” Matt gave a weak laugh. “Was Dr. Halstead right to worry about your feelings for the Detective, Jay?”
“Wait, what did Will say?” Jay demanded. “He didn’t confront Antonio, did he?”
“Worried? Your brother may be a doctor and practices that whole ‘do-no-harm’, but he’s still an Alpha.”
Jay cursed. “Will better not hav-
“Relax,” chuckled Matt. “It came up while I was getting checked out. He just asked if I knew what your fascination was with Antonio.”
Jay did relax slightly at Matt’s laugh. Before he and Kelly left Chicago, Jay had the opportunity to talk to Matt a couple more times. Those few times that the Omega and Alpha weren’t holed up in a bed together, of course. One of those times, Jay spoke to Matt about the Detective. Not about how Jay was feeling, not necessarily, but just…to have another Omega to giggle about good-looking Alphas with.
It’s not exactly something he can do where’s currently at.
“I told him that any Omega with half a brain would be interested in Antonio.”
Matt also happened to be one of the few who knew Antonio’s true secondary gender.
“That’s all you told him?”
“Well, when I mentioned you wanted to climb him like a tree, he cut me off. Apparently he doesn’t need to hear about his little brother and the word sex in the same sentence. You’re as pure as snow, Jay.”
Jay threw his head back, laughing. “Damn straight, I am.” Wiping away a tear, Jay finally realized what Matt said. “Wait, are you okay? Matty, why were you at the hospital?”
“What?” Was the angry growl from behind Jay. It was thanks to years of military training that the Army Omega didn’t react, baring his neck to the angry pheromones stinking up the main room. He only looked over his shoulder with an unimpressed look. The others in the room were also releasing pheromones, ensuring the room stank with testy Alphas.
Jay mentally rolled his eyes.
“Was that Kelly?” Matt asked, hope in his voice.
“Yeah, it’s Kelly. Let me put him on. We’ll talk later, okay?”
“Sure, see you Jay.”
Jay held the phone out to Kelly, calmly stating, “It’s for you.”
Taking the phone, Kelly put the phone to his ear. Then, to every other Alpha in the room’s surprise, asked in the softest tone they’ve ever heard him use, “You okay?”
---
The last thing Kelly expected to hear while in the middle of a mission was that his Omega was pregnant.
“You’re what?”
“Pregnant. Apparently, I went into a mini-heat while you were here. Having you around after years of non-exposure had my body jump start my Heat. So…we’re having a baby, Alpha.”
The rumble that started deep in Kelly’s chest was not to be stopped. Nor would he want to. Sure, they were on a mission, but they were in a safe (enough) location. He can be happy and excited!
“A baby?” he confirmed, just to make triple sure that his Alpha wasn’t making up some wild scenario. Beside him, Jay’s eyes went wide and mouthed ‘a baby?’.
“Y-Yeah. Is t-t…Is that okay?”
Kelly wished he could pull Matt into his arms and kiss him silly, because of course, it was okay. It was more than okay! It was everything that was right in this world!
“Shit, yes. Of course! Why wouldn’t it?”
“Well, I wasn’t sure if you maybe changed your mind an-
Sudden gunfire prevented Kelly from hearing anything else. The alarm for a breech went off.
“Fuck. Listen Matty, if you can still hear me. I gotta go. But I’ll see you as soon as I can, alright? I love you. Both of you.”
---
Matt was never a fan of Tuesdays. Especially Tuesdays that required him to be on shift. It was like a universal fact that Tuesdays were just no good .
The shift started off fairly normal, a few calls, but nothing crazy. Gabby was moved to a different shift, so he didn’t have to deal with her anymore. His crew was all accounted for after their last call. It had been a car wreckage that required both Truck and Squad to be there.
In short work, they were able to get the parents and two little ones out of the car before the gasoline caught fire.
Matt, of course, had to watch from afar; but that didn’t stop him from giving his team orders. It was the happy middle he was able to get Chief Boden to agree on. Matt could still attend calls up until he can’t easily jump up in the rig anymore. But while on calls, he was not to run into burning buildings, or climb the ladder, or be in wreckage sites. He would be strictly in an officer capacity that provided direction, not leading the charge.
Andy willingly offered to take a more active role in ‘leading the charge’, but still defer to Matt’s direction. His whole team did. His pregnancy didn’t make them see him as weak.
If anything, they all got more protective.
He’s had to snap at a few of them when they got too growly because they didn’t like what he was doing. Like getting his own plate of food.
They were returning from the wreckage, turnout gear put away, and doing inventory of their gear. They all were, even Matt. Normally, he’d slip away to do paperwork. But not taking active roles leaves him with more energy that the baby hasn’t re-appropriated just yet, so he decided to help.
They were just putting back the Jaws when a gunshot rang out and one of the local gangs pushed their way in.
From there, it was like all hell broke loose as dominance was fought over. There were more firefighters than gangbangers, so it was almost ridiculous that this gang even tried.
But then there was a gun at Matt’s temple and everything changed.
From there, tensions were still high, but everyone was cautious and did as they were told. The guy who held him captive was an Alpha, from what Matt could tell, and shouted directions at his gang.
Please, just take whatever it is you want and leave , Matt mentally begged, eyes darting around for a solution. But nothing that he could see would be helpful.
Shit.
“You’re an Omega?” said the gangbanger, surprise tinging his tone. Matt closed his eyes and rested a hand over his not yet noticeable baby bump, hoping and praying that the guy didn’t suddenly get some dumb idea. “What does your Alpha have to say about you being here?”
Matt stayed silent, refusing to show fear.
“Think you’re so tough?” sneered the Alpha, taking a threatening step toward him. Growls and shouts sounded from all the Firefighters, warning him off. “Ah, so you’re the house bitch, are you?”
“I’m no one ’s bitch,” Matt snapped, glaring now. Everything in him was telling him to take a step back, protect his baby, Kelly’s baby. But the other part of him, the one that trained and pushed and succeeded in him becoming a Fire Lieutenant warned him that it wouldn’t help. The best he could do right now was stand still.
Even if there was a gun pointed at him. At least it was pointed at his chest and not his stomach.
“That bite says differently.”
Matt hissed. “I wouldn’t expect a-
“Matty,” Andy called from the other side of the room, warning in his tone. “Maybe not incite the guy with the gun?”
“Listen to your friend, bitch .” The Alpha grinned, puffing his chest. Matt couldn't help the eye roll at the sight. The sign of a true and kind Alpha wasn’t one who felt big and strong because of a weapon, but reassured in their own strength. Even some of the worst criminals that he’s had the pleasure of meeting while on the job who also happened to be Alphas, their charisma was deeply rooted in their self-confidence. It was an attractive feature many of them held in common and made them so dangerous.
It was one of many things that drew him to Kelly.
Matt yelped when a hand wrapped around his arm and pulled him against the Gangbanger Alpha, the barrel of the gun digging into his chest. All around them he could hear the others shout, demanding he be released.
None of that really registered for Matt because he caught the scent of ash and forest .
Daddy’s home .
“Back up!”
Matt barely felt the gun move away, as it was used to ward off Cruz from tackling them. It was then aimed at Hermann who took a couple steps toward them, but was forced to stop as well.
“I ain’t kidding! I will bust a cap in this bitch, if you don’t back the fuck up!”
“Listen to him,” Matt said calmly, holding out a hand. He hoped that they would listen and not argue. Ever since his pregnancy was revealed, everyone became absolutely overprotective. He thought he would have time before he dealt with an overprotective Alpha, but they all made him second guess. “Guys, stand down. It’s alright.”
“But Lieutenant-!”
“Otis. I mean it,” Matt said a little sterner, glaring at them all.
As everyone relaxed slightly, pheromones dispersing even, Matt felt the hand on his arm relax some as well. “You a Lieutenant?”
Matt turned his head, meeting the curious gaze of the Alpha holding him captive. “I am.”
“They let bitches be officers?”
He refused to respond. As far as he’s concerned, he already answered the question. All he wants right now is for his Alpha to come out of hiding, wherever he was, and wrap himself in his arms.
The Alpha gangbanger scoffed, grip loosening a little more as he got in Matt’s personal space more. “You telling me, your Alpha don’t care that you playing with the big boys? What do you think he’ll say if he saw you right now, huh?”
“I’d say you better point that gun at something else before I tear your head from your body,” came the growled response from behind the Squad rig. A moment later, Kelly stepped out from behind the rig, dressed in his blue camo uniform with matching cap, snarl etched into his face. It was reminiscent of their time in high school.
Kelly’s Alpha was just under the surface and he’s never liked it when Matt was in danger.
Matt couldn’t help melting inside at the sight of his Alpha. It’s been about four months since they last saw each other. Not for a lack of trying. Every time Matt was able to find a time that would work with his schedule, Kelly would either just be called for a mission or won’t be back in the country to meet him.
He’d told the Alpha a little over two months ago that he was pregnant, so they haven’t even had the chance to be together with that news either. The way that call ended too, he was terrified that he was going to get a call or a visit saying Kelly was hurt or worse, dead . But as each day passed and it never came, he felt reassured that his Alpha was alive and whole.
Seeing him now, in all his SEAL glory, it was both terrifying and hot as fuck.
At least for Matt.
For his captor, Matt could smell the guy’s fear. Not only was he pointing a gun at Matt, but was also endangering the mother of a pissed off Alpha’s unborn baby? His fate did not look too good.
Matt grunted when he was manhandled to be between them, but at least the gun wasn’t pointed at him anymore.
It was pointed at Kelly now, though.
“Where the fuck did G.I. Joe come from?! Yo Money! Where you at, man?!”
Kelly bared his teeth in a terrifying grin. “They’re a bit busy.”
On cue, a grunt was heard before the sound of bodies hitting the ground echoed around the main apparatus floor.
Then to Matt’s surprise, Jay walked into view, dusting off his hands casually. He was also in his uniform, but unlike Kelly was wearing a beige beret on his head. “All clear, BTF.”
Matt could practically feel his captor floundering, looking for a way out of things. And of course, he was forced to play shield.
“I don’t know how you got your Army boys to come rescue you, but it ain’t goin’ down like this,” the Alpha growled, pointing his gun between Kelly and Jay. “You two stay where you are, or I will put a bullet in this bitch!”
“I told you,” Matt said quietly, grabbing onto the arm that was around his chest before stomping on the guy’s instep. “Don’t call me that.” He slammed his head backwards, catching the guy in the nose when he bent over from the pain with Matt’s first attack.
The hold on him loosened and Matt moved out of the way quickly. A second later, he was pulled into Kelly’s arms as Jay laid the man flat out, kicking the gun under a rig and zip-tying his hands and feet together.
“Omega,” breathed Kelly, holding Matt as tight as the Omega was clutching onto him.
“Alpha, you’re here.”
“Just in time, apparently,” sighed Kelly, pulling away and kissing him to the point of breathlessness. Matt didn’t even care. He threw his arms around his Alpha’s neck, returning the kiss. He pulled Kelly’s hat off, so he could run one hand through the short dark hairs. Later on, he’ll notice that there was some gray starting to show. But for the moment, he enjoyed being in his Alpha’s arms again.
“Um, I helped, too,” Jay called out, coming up beside them with his arms out.
Matt laughed, pulling Jay into an awkward hug. It was only awkward because Kelly refused to let his Omega go. “Hey, Jay.”
Jay returned the hug, nuzzling Matt in greeting. Matt was startled for a second, but returned the nuzzle. “Congratulations, Matty.”
“Oh. Oh!” Matt turned wide eyes to Kelly. “R-Right. The baby.”
Kelly snorted, sighing. A familiarly large hand rested on his stomach where their baby was growing. “If it weren’t for your Chief keeping me apprised that you weren’t running into burning buildings, or scaling up trees, or tackling criminals, or climbing through wreckages, we would be having a much different conversation.”
“Hey Lieutenant,” Hermann called, walking over quickly. “You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Matt answered. “Me and the baby, promise.”
“Thank God.” Hermann sighed in relief, nodding to the two soldiers. “Especially for you guys’ timing. What were the odds, seriously!”
“We should probably still get you checked out,” cautioned Kelly, already directing Matt to where the ambulance was sitting.
“Kelly.”
“Matthew.”
The Omega tsked, but took a seat so he could be looked over by a paramedic. Jay sat down beside him, grabbing one of Matt’s hands and giving it a tight squeeze. Matt squeezed it back just as hard.
Yeah, he said he was okay, but truth be told, he was a bit shaken up. Having Kelly there was a blessing for his nerves, truly.
“The stress must not be good for the baby,” Jay commented. “Maybe you should go see my brother?”
Kelly nodded. “Agreed. Co-
“Would you two relax. I don’t need to go to the hospital. I never got hurt.”
A new voice spoke up, “Well that’s good to hear.”
It was Jay who reacted the most, head snapping up and blushing slightly at the sight of the detective. “Antonio!”
Matt turned to Kelly to give their two friends some privacy. “Alpha, why are you here?”
“You’re kidding, right?” Kelly asked. “I know I’m a little later than I was hoping to be, but war stops for no one. This was the soonest my commander was able to release me. Jay had to come because after our time is done here, we have a follow-on to-” Kelly stopped, shaking his head. “That’s not important right now. You are. Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yes,” Matt answered softly, leaning into the hand cupping his cheek gently. “Thank you for coming, Alpha.”
“Hell or high water, Matt. I will not fail you. Or our baby.”

Life was a funny thing. It threw more curve balls than all baseball games could ever achieve. It ran a person over with its refusal to stay the course. It was a force of nature that did what it wanted without regrets.
But in that same breath of air that set course a path so painful, that the only reward at the end was the faith and trust forged in the fires of hell. Pain turns into strength and sadness into happiness.
Kelly Severide and Matt Casey share a bond so pure that even when apart, they found their way back to each other. Their time apart showed them not only what they can do alone, but also what they can achieve together.
To their surprise, they would not only be blessed with one child, but two. Two beautiful Omega children that Kelly will definitely have his hands full to Matt (and Jay’s) amusement. When it came time for Kelly’s contract to end with the Navy, the twin's were just shy of two years old. Together, Alpha and Omega decided that it was time for Kelly to come home.
Separating from the Navy was a headache and a half, but the day Kelly came home, dropped his bags at the door, and pulled his family into his arms, it was all worth it.
It was an easy decision to join the Fire Academy.
His graduation was a day no one will forget. After all, Captain Casey told off Retired Battalion Chief Benny Severide for all to hear. The Omega was in his dress uniform, dual bugles shining, as he held one twin on his hip glaring down the older Alpha. Kelly stood beside him, their second child making loud noises that suspiciously sounded like agreement after each pointed barb that Matt snapped.
When Matt was done, the older Alpha turned to Kelly and asked if he was going to correct his Omega or not.
“No, I think he hit all the main points, Benny. I got nothing to add.”
Matt couldn’t help the snort, hiding his grin. It took almost a full decade, but he was finally able to speak his mind. Not only was he successful as a CFD Omega Firefighter, but his Alpha was finally home.
He’s lost count how many touches and kisses he and Kelly have shared at this point.
And that’s okay. Because if he ever needed a reminder, his Alpha would be right there, ready to give him whatever he wanted.
