Work Text:
Elsa shut the door before Anna could run in and ask if she she could play.
"I'm the oldest, I'm not nervous I'm as tough as the crust of the Earth is."
Elsa peeked through the key hole to see her sister, begging her to come out and play.
"I move mountains, I move churches And I glow, 'cause I know what my worth is."
Elsa wanted so badly to open the door and run out there with her.
"I don't ask how hard the work is got a rough indestructible surface Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanded."
She had never worried before but now she just felt...she felt like she was about to scream. She was...for lack of a better term, frozen in place. Ice creeped up the edges of the room.
"But under the surface, I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus."
No no, if she could get it under control then she could go play with Anna!
"Under the surface, was Hercules ever like, "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus?"
She knew there were stories of those with magic, like the spirits of the Enchanted Forest. Did they ever not like the magic they had?
"Under the surface, I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service."
She had to get this under control or else she would be alone forever. No one would want her. She'd be too dangerous!
"A flaw or a crack, the straw in the stack That breaks the camel's back, what breaks the camel's back?"
She was eight years old! Too young to worry about this but she did.
"It's pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa, oh, oh."
Anna was allowed to be a little girl, living her life the way she was supposed to. She was better with Elsa not in the picture.
"Give it to your sister, your sister's older Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder."
Elsa would do worse to herself if it meant Anna would be fine, so she just resigned herself to her life.
"Who am I if I can't run with the ball? If I fall to..."
Papa gave her gloves and to her joy they worked! Kind of...
"Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa, oh, oh..."
Her power was still inside of her, as she grew up to teengerhood and still stayed locked in her room.
"Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger See if she can hang on a little longer."
Anna's carefree voice, talking about riding her bike down the halls...it both made Elsa happy and made Elsa jealous.
"Who am I if I can't carry it all? If I falter."
This is the life she wanted for her sister, this is why she locked herself into her room.
"Under the surface, I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us."
Elsa could not be with her family because she knew that she'd hurt them. She wasn't ready yet.
"Under the surface, the ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is."
She'd never be ready.
"Under the surface, I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?"
She wanted though. She wanted to be with her sister and she wanted to have a normal life so she could be a good queen. But...
"Line up the dominoes, a light wind blows You try to stop it tumbling, but on and on, it goes..."
Snow escaped from her as she ran back to her room after bowing to her parents, to send them off.
"But wait, if I could shake the crushing weight of expectations."
She wanted to hug them but she didn't and now she had to wait. And hope. Like she had been for most of her life.
"Would that free some room up for joy or relaxation, or simple pleasure?"
How she wished that she had ignored her sister begging her to build a snowman then she would have a normal life and wouldn't be afraid.
"Instead, we measure this growing pressure."
Announcements came. And it wasn't good.
"Keeps growing, keep going."
Elsa froze, even her ice froze.
"'Cause all we know is."
She didn't even go to the funeral.
"Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa."
Elsa had to be the best sister ever. She had to be able to be the queen her country needed. She had to be the queen her mama and papa would be proud to see.
"Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa, oh, oh."
Her life would never be calm, never be normal.
"Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt, and See if she can handle every family burden."
But Anna's would at least.
"Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks, no mistakes."
Elsa didn't sleep the night before her coronation.
"Just pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa."
She had to get this right, one day and then no one would ever see her again.
"Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa, oh, oh."
Just one day, one moment. She could handle that. She had to.
"Give it to your sister and never wonder."
Anna was running through the halls, her excited and somewhat awkward manner making Elsa smile slightly.
"If the same pressure would've pulled you under."
At least Anna would have fun.
"Who am I if I don't have what it takes?"
That almost made this anxiety worth it.
"No cracks, no breaks."
She smacked her hands on her dress, shaking the ice crystals off of her gloves.
"No mistakes, no pressure."
And she opened the door.
