Every kid grew up wondering who their soulmates would be, what mark they would get that would point them towards their forever person, that was one of the few normal parts of Lin's childhood. She didn't get to do much wondering though, everyone told her that Tenzin and her would be soulmates, they were friends, they enjoyed alot of similar things, and they even shared a birthday. Lin knew she didn't feel any attraction to Tenzin and hadn't since the maybe week long crush she'd had on him when they were ten, but everyone told her that they would be soulmates so she eventually gave up hoping for it to be someone else.
Everyone's soulmate mark was a mix of something important in both them and their partners life, Aang and Katara had the avatar simbol, Sokka and Suki had a boomerang and a kyoshi fan across each other, Bumi and Izumi had turtle ducks; it being both of their favorite animal and they turtleduck pond in the Fire Nation royal gardens was where Bumi asked Izumi to be his girlfriend before they even had their marks, Kya hasn't found her soulmate yet, her mark is a RCPD chief badge surrounded by drops of water being bent. When Lin had first seen Kya's she thought it might be her friend Saikhan, his dad was a man named Kanto, who was on the force, so him and Lin had met many times at fancy police partys, but he had gotten his mark last year and it didn't match Kya's.
"Lin, Tenzin, blow out your candles, so everyone can have cake before Lin gets her mark" Kataras voice said snapping her out of her thoughts. They were at Air Temple Island, Lin and Tenzin sat in front of their half vanilla half chocolate cake, Lin's was chocolate, Tenzin's vanilla.
"Can I go somewhere else when I get my mark?" Lin asked
"sure you can go in Kyas room since she won't be here till later, but quick blow out your candles" Katara rushed holding a camera in front of the two. They both quickly blew out the candles and Lin left for Kya's room.
Lin sat on the bed and glanced at the clock it read: 1:12, Lin would get her mark in two minutes. Lin wasn't sure weather or not to be nervous, maybe she would be like Toph and Zuko and not have a mark, Toph had always said soulmates were dumb and she should focus on training instead. Lin looked back at the clock it now read: 1:14, Lin got up and stood in front of the full length mirror against the wall. She couldn't see anything anywhere that wasn't covered which meant there was no mark on her face, lower arms, or legs. Lin slipped off her shirt leaving her in her bindings and a mark on her upper right bicep caught her eye. It was a RCPD chief badge surrounded by water being bent, the exact same as Kya's.
"Lin did you get your mark?" Kataras voice came through the door.
"Uh- not yet" Lin croaked, Kya was the last person she expected her soulmate to be, she wasn't even aware two girls could be soulmates. Lin tried to tell herself it was platonic and that Kya was just a realy good friend, but not even her believed that. Sure kya was attractive but Lin had never guessed they would be soulmates.
"Do you want help looking?" Kataras voice came a few minutes later
"No, Toph probably just messed up the time I was born." Lin said with a faked chuckle and walked out of the room after slipping her t-shirt back on.
"okay, lets go there's still some cake" katara said with a sad look on her face.
All eyes were on Lin as soon as she walked back into the room, "I couldn't find my mark, Toph probably got the time wrong on my birth certificate" Lin said with a shrug and went to eat her cake.
Izumi sat down next to Lin as the metal bender ate. "who do you think your soulmate will be if you even have one?" the fire princess asked as everyone else started to go outside.
"I dunno" Lin shrugged.
"Well anyways your mark is showing so pull your sleeve down" Izumi whispered
"Please don't tell anyone" Lin begged she didn't want anyone to know until she was able to process it herself.
"I won't, how long do you plan on keeping this a secret?"
"dunno" Lin said thankful that everyone else had gone outside.
"please make it soon because I've had a bet with Bumi for years that you two would at least kiss at some point" Izumi laughed and Lin glared at her.
"Zumi come out here I wanna prove that I'm taller then you!" Bumi yelled from the door and Izumi excused herself and left. Lin decided to sit on the couch and read instead of going outside with everyone else. Lin wasn't sure how much time had passed when she felt a pair of arms wrap around her from behind. Lin looked at the arms and saw a familair mark on the left wrist, she felt her heart speed up as she looked up and saw Kya looked down at her.
"Hey Linny, get your mark?" kya asked jumping over the back of the couch and landing next to Lin.
"Not yet, we think Toph messed up the time I was born, it was probably around 11 instead of one." Lin said nervously, then mentally cursed at herself for being so nervous.
"Oh that sucks, hopefully you'll get it tonight." Kya smiled at her. "did Tenny get his mark yet I always forget what time he was born" Kya laughed
"Not sure, nobody's come in shouting weather or not we're soulmates." Lin asnwered
"You seriously don't want that air head to be your soulmate" Kya said and moved so she was laying with her head in Lins lap looking up at her.
"No, but everyone except you, Zumi, and Bumi have told me that we're gonna be soulmates, so I'm not sure what to expect." lin shrugged and just as she finished talking everyone else came back inside with bumi shouting:
"I knew it you owe me twenty dad" He laughed as they fillied into the living room.
"Did Tenny get his mark?" Kya asked still not moving from Lins lap and Lin caught Izumi smirking at them.
"yup and linnys not his soulmate" Bumi sing-songed
"Bumi at least be considerate, Lin you don't need to feel hurt by the fact that you're not soulmates you'll find your someone" katara said and Lin tried not to laugh, kya didn't try very hard because she was laughing.
"It's fine, I don't really care who my soulmate is maybe I'll be like Toph and just not have one, " Lin shrugged.
"Oh please not another Toph" Suki sighed and Sokka laughed.
" Kya when did you get here?" katara asked
"Few minutes ago" Kya shrugged
"you should have told us" katara said
"I wanted to be with dear Linny, she looked so lonely" Kya said dramatically and Lin rolled her eyes.
"at this point I wouldn't be surprised if you two were soulmates" Sokka said and neither of the girls knew how to respond.
"How about we go swimming" katara suggested, everyone nodded except for Lin who had froze in a slight panic, the only swim suit she had brought was a one piece that defiantly did not cover her bicep.
"uh I forgot a swim suit" Lin lied.
"it's okay, Kya you've got a few old ones that would fit her" kay suggested.
"yeah, I think, come one Lin" kya said and led Lin towards her bedroom. "I think this one should fit you" kya said after a few minute of looking and held up a light blue long sleeved two piece, " I know its hot but you sunburn easily so this should help" Kya said and Lin took it and thanked her. Lin started walking towards the door to change in the bathroom but was stopped by Kyas voice, "you can change in here, it's not like we haven't changed around each other before" kya said.
"Oh yeah can you like turn that way please" lin said and Kya turned around, letting Lin quickly change. Kya changed too and soon they were on there way to join everyone at the beach.
"come on Linny!" Kya shouted and sprinted to the dock and did a canon ball off.
"Lin, could you watch Su for a bit?" Katara asked turning Lins attention towards her four year old sister who was attempting to make sand castles.
"I can" Izumi volunteered and gave Lin a wink as she walked past the metal bender who gave her a glare in return.
"Lin get out here the waters great" Kya called treading water towards the end of the dock.
Lin walked to the end of the dock and looked at the water. "It looks cold" She concluded
"it's amazing" Kay said floating on her back.
"I'll sit here" Lin said taking a seat on the end of the dock. Kya gave her to most offended look she could muster before smirking. Lin was confused at Kyas facial expresion for a second before she felt something wrap around her ankle and pull her into the water. "holy fucking shit this is freezing!" Lin yelled
"No swearing!" katara yelled from the beach
"It is not, It's amazing" Kya laughed
"maybe to a water bender" Lin muttered
"fine then I'll keep you warm" Kya said and pulled Lin close against her keeping them floating with waterbending.
"geese guys keep the PDA to a minimum please" Bumi said shielding his eyes from the dock while Lin blushed.
"Oh please, have you seen you and Izumi" Kya asked
"fair" Bumi said then walked away.
"are you warm enough now?" Kya asked smirking at Lins still flustered state.
"plenty" Lin coughed and Kya let go of her and went back to floating on her back.
Lin copied kya and looked around she saw Tenzin swimming not far away and saw he had a air nation symbol on his chest, so his soulmate was probably an acolyte.
They all swam a few more hours then went inside and had a quick supper before going to bed. Lin looked through her bag and cursed when she realized she had packed a tank top to sleep in.
"what did you forget now?" Kya asked with a chuckle
"A shirt to sleep in" Lin sighed
"I'll find you something" Kya said and got up off the bed to find a shirt for Lin to sleep in. Kya handed Lin a light blue t-shirt and layed back down on the bed already in her own pajamas.
"can you uh close your eyes" Lin said nervously
"Sure" Kya shrugged. After a bit she spoke again "Not to pry or anything but are you like hurting your self or something, you never used to be bothered by us seeing each other.
"No, we just haven't seen each other in a while and my body's changed" Lin lied
"Okay, but just so you know, I would never judge you" Kya said as Lin finished changing.
"Okay I'm done" Lin said and Kya smiled
"you look cute in my shirt" she said,
"what? no!" Lin argued the since Kya was significantly taller then her the shirt went down to her mid thigh and you could barely tell she was wearing shorts.
"Sure" Kya chuckled and rolled her eyes. Lin layed down on the bed next to her, it was only a twin size bed so they were closer then Lin had rembered.
"It's almost 11, hopefully you'll get your mark soon" Kya said, and lin nodded. "so what have you been doing these past six months, we haven't really head a chance to catch up." Kya said
"mostly training" Lin shrugged
"do you still plan on joining the police academy?"
"yeah I've asked Toph about million times to let me join early since I have nothing else to do."
"well I'll be here the rest of the month so you'll have me for entertainment"
"Kya staying in Republic city more then a week, unheard of" Lin joked and Kya shoved her. Kya had been traveling around the world since her 18th birthday, only coming back to visit on holidays or for birthdays.
"I was here two weeks last time" Kya scoffed and Lin rolled her eyes. "it's 11:14" Kya said after a bit of silence.
"see anything?" Lin asked
"No maybe its covered" Kya said
"okay close your eyes I'll look" Lin said and got off the bed to stand in front of the mirror, she pretended to look for a few minutes, before flopping back on the bed.
"find it?"
"No, I probably just don't have a soulmate" Lin shrugged, she was digging a deep hole for herself, at this point she would just keep the fact that Kya's her soulmate a secret forever.
"Oh maybe you're asexual"
"whats that?"
"I forget how old fashion republic city is even though it was made like 30 years ago. Being asexual is feeling no sexual attraction, The correct term for not having a soulmate would be aroace, which is not feeling any attraction. In the fire nation I went to this place and they had a thing called a pride parade it was amazing, people got to express their sexuality freely it was so cool." Kya explained
"what other sexuality are there?" Lin asked intrigued
"there's a bunch, I personally identify as lesbian, which mean I like non-men, but there's a bunch of other ones like bisexual, which is liking two or more genders, or pansexual, which is not having a preference towards gender." kya explained happily. Lins heart sped up at Kya saying she was lesbian, so maybe it was a normal thing for two girls to be soulmates.
"what you thinking about?" Kya asked snapping Lin out of her thoughts
"uh nothing, it's really cool how open you are about your sexuality" Lin complemented
"I wish, I've known I've liked girls forever, but I'm to scared to tell my parents, you, Bumi, and Izumi are the only people that know." Kya sighed
"well then it's pretty brave of you to tell me"
"thanks, I didn't realize how late it is, I think I'm gonna go to sleep." Kya yawned
"okay, me too" Lin said glancing at the clock that read: 12:46
Both Lin and Kya laid down, Kya fell asleep quickly and Lin was lulled into a half asleep state by the sound of Kyas breaths, until she was snapped out of it by Kyas arms pulling her close to the waterbender spooning lin. Lin looked up Kya was still deep asleep and Lin didn't want to risk waking her by moving so she stayed and soon found herself asleep too.
Probably a few hours later Lin woke and in a half sleep state pulled Kyas shirt off her leaving her in bindings, mumbling to herself about how it was 'to damn hot' not even registering that Kyas arms were still wrapped tightly around her waist.
Lin woke the next morning from a soft gasp in her ear "sorry" Lin said and quickly scooted away from Kya and sat up.
"is that why you didn't want me to look at you earlier?" Kya asked gesturing to Lins right bicep
"shit, sorry, I just wasn't sure how to react, and I didn't know what everyone else would say. Before last night I didn't even know two girls could be soulmates and I was just Kinda freaked out" Lin explained
Kya didn't react for a few moments before speaking. "okay I understand that, what do you wanna do?"
"about what?"
"the fact that we're soulmates, because I really like you Lin, and I have for awhile." Kya said placing her hand on top of Lins.
"I dunno, it's to early to know if I can return those feelings." Lin shrugged
"what if we like tried dating, then you could know if you have feelings sooner, we wouldn't have to tell anyone, we could just do stuff that couples do." Kya explained
Lin thought for a bit before asking; "what would we all do?"
"nothing that you'd be uncomfortable with, just stuff like going on dates, hanging out together more, kissing." Kya said the last part quieter and Lin felt a brush rise to her cheeks.
"I'm fine with that" Lin almost whispered
"then if it's okay, I'd like to kiss you now." Kya said looking into Lins eyes, Lin didn't think she would be able to speak if she tried so instead she nodded.
Kya put her hand up to Lins cheek and gently pulled her closer until their lips met. The kiss was quick and gentle almost as soon as Kya pulled away Lin pulled her in for another kiss, two kisses turned into three, then four, then five, until Lin had lost count, they just kept pulling each other back in. During one of their longer kisses Bumi slammed the door open.
"Holy shit, Zumi was right!" he shouted and Lin and Kya quickly separated, a blush spread across both of their cheeks.
"Bumi don't you dare tell anyone." Kya said
"easy I don't wanna have to pay Zumi." Bumi nodded and was about to leave when Izumi showed up in the door way smirking.
"pay up Bumi, I've known they were soulmates since yesterday, you're lucky I kept it a secret this long." Izumi said
"could you guys shut the door," Lin said she was still in her bindings her soulmate mark could be easily spotted.
"of course, have fun" Izumi winked and left followed by Bumi.
"why dose she know?" Kya asked
"she saw my mark a bit after I got it" Lin shrugged.
They sat in silence for a few moments before deciding to get dressed, Lin dug through her bag and cussed loudly when she realized she had also packed a tank top to wear today.
"Is all you own tank tops?" Kya laughe already searching through her closet for something for Lin to wear.
"Is all you own blue?" Lin asked glancing at Kyas closet
"it's part of my aesthetic" Kya said in a mystic voice and handed lin a shirt, "This ones a little small for me so it shouldn't be as big as the one you wore last night." Kya explained and handed Lin a light blue shirt with some flower patterns on it.
Lin changed into the shirt and a pair of black jean shorts, soon after Kya changed into a blue shirt with the water tribe symbol on it with a pair of blue jean shorts. Lin looked in the mirror and huffed annoyed at how crazy her hair looked. "Oooo you should let me braid it." Kya said excitedly
"I think it's a bit to short to braid"
"not if I do two french braids" Kya said and went up behind Lin to start brushing her hair. Lin rolled her eyes but let Kya braid it. A few minutes later Lins hair was in two tight french braids that ended at her chin. "see it's cute" Kya cheered
"not cute" Lin huffed but kya just grinned at her and gave her a kiss on the cheek before walking out of the room towards the kitchen. Lin followed soon after and as soon as she got to the kitchen all eyes were on her. "oh I uh didn't get my mark," Lin said and she saw Bumi and Izumi grinning at each other while everyone else had disappointed faces.
"well, lets all eat a good breakfast before people have to leave" Katara said and started bringing dishes full of food to the table.
Once they had all eaten it was time for goodbyes to the people that would be leaving. Kya hugged Izumi and Lin granted the fire princess a small side hug. Once Lin and Kya had said there goodbyes Bumi ran up to Izumi and gave her a big kiss and a hug, "Bumi, you'll see me next week" Izumi chuckled
"I don't know if I'll last" Bumi said dramticly.
Sokka had came over to where Lin and Kya were standing and gave Kya a big hug before giving lin a much smaller one and saying; "just because you don't have a soulmate, doesn't mean you can't have fun, but don't get pregnant before 18" Sokka grinned
"Oh my spirits sokka" Lin groaned covering her face while Kya laughed, Sokka just laughed and walked over to say good bye to Bumi, who was still refusing to let go of Izumi, and now was fake crying.
Once everyone had left Lin and Kya sat on the beach waiting for the ferry that would take Lin and Su back to the city. "Since we're sorta dating can I call you my girlfriend?" Kya asked
"I feel like girlfriend is to official and if we decide it doesn't work right now I don't wanna have to explain it to Bumi and Izumi, so what if we called each other something like partner," Lin suggested and Kya nodded a smile gracing both of their lips.
The next few weeks with Kya were pure bliss for Lin, they hung out together almost everyday and on days when they couldn't they would spend hours calling, they had both been to busy to go on a real date but kya had brought lunch for Lin and Su a few times, and the kisses, Lin was obsessed with the feelings of Kyas lips on hers, kyas soft Lips against her chapped ones was heaven for Lin, she just wished she would have realized that she probably had feelings for kya before kyas month in republic city had ended, she water bender was going to be in the south pole for the next eight months. It was six months into Kyas trip and the entire time it felt like torture for Lin, not having Kya near her, or being able to call since the south pole had no radio, Lin thought she might go insane. One day board in her room thinking about Kya, Lin decide to write her a letter and tell the water bender how she truly felt.
Dear Kya,
I've missed you a lot, I wanted to tell you this once you got back, but when it comes to you I find myself extremely impatient. I wish I would have realized this before you left RC, but it's a bit late for that now, I know it's soon, a lot sooner then I would have expected, but I'm ready for us to be girlfriends. I really like you kya and the weeks we spent together were like heaven, I'm not sure what else to write so, hope that you're enjoying your trip and can't wait to see you.

Two weeks later Lin received a letter in response.
Dear Lin, aka my girlfriend :),
I've missed you too, I'm extremely happy that you were able to realize your feelings. Are you fine with us telling people now? I've got a friend here who I've mentioned you to a few times (I haven't used your name) and she's dying to know who you are, I don't want to pressure you into telling people, it's totally up to you and I can't wait until I'm able to see you again.
Love Kya, (your amazing girlfriend)
Lin had smiled at that letter and was about to write one back when her mother called her to the kitchen, she mentally cursed when she saw Kanto and Sakhian here since she was in a tank top, at home she didn't bother to cover her mark, Toph was blind, and Su hadn't seen Kya enough times to know they were soulmates. Kanto and Sakhian eye'd her mark curiously but didn't say anything.
"Lin, take a seat" Toph said
"No thanks I'll stand" Lin responded and Toph just shrugged before continuing.
"Since Lin, you've been begging me to let you join the academy early forever, and recently Kanto has decided to annoy me about Shakian joining early, since his 18th birthday is only two months after the semester starts, I've decided you can both join this coming semester." Toph said
"thanks, is that all I was kinda busy with something" Lin said
"yes," Toph said then froze for a minute using seismic sense. "Lin, Kya's waiting outside" Toph said and Lin couldn't help the surprised look that came over her face before rushing to the door.
"Kya?" Lin asked opening to door to find Kya mid knock.
"damn it! I wanted to surprise you," Kya cursed and Lin laughed before pulling the taller girl in for a hug.
"did you seriously end your trip early to come visit me?" Lin asked still not breaking the hug
"what would your reaction be if I said yes?"
"I'd probably be happy at first then mad because you left your favorite place just to visit me."
"then good your not the only reason, but you are my favorite. Tenzins getting his arrows in two weeks and mom wanted me home early for it." Kya explained.
"I didn't know he was getting his arrows."
"he doesn't even know, mom and dad are gonna tell him tonight, and I'm pretty sure you guys are invited over, along with Sokka and Suki, even Bumi's gonna be home, and the actual ceremony isn't for two weeks" Kya chuckled finally breaking the hug and looking around before leaning down to kiss Lin quickly.
"why don't we go inside" Lin hesitated, "uh could you please cover your mark" Kya face fell and Lin quickly explained "Kanto and Sakhian are here, I'm fine with telling family" Lin said and Kya nodded before following her in, making sure to keep her wrist close to her side.
"oh yeah just walk right past us" Toph muttered as they walked by quickly.
"so why were they here?" Kya asked once they were in Lins room.
"Oh yeah, me and Sakhian have been allowed to join the academy early!" Lin said happily and Kya pulled her in for another quick hug.
"that's amazing! When do you start?"
"August first" Lin answered smiling and Kya pulled her in for a kiss. This kiss was much longer then the last and left them pulling away gasping for air lightly, still smiling at each other.
"Lin, Kya, we're leaving for Air Temple Island soon!" Toph called.
"do you think we could tell everyone tonight?" Kya asked as Lin started changing into a different shirt.
"I would say yes but, tonight supposed to be about Tenzin. I know he gets special stuff all the time, but I don't think anyone would thank us for making it about us" Lin explained and Kya nodded
Once Lin had changed they walked out to the living room and found Su and Toph already waiting for them. "finaly you guys take forever to get ready" Toph said dramatically
"you're actually gonna be there?" Lin asked with a raised eye brow.
"yes, Katara said it was important, but then I'm working the night shift and you guys will stay at the Island" Toph said
"then I need to pack for over night" Lin sighed
"you can just borrow Kya's stuff, you do it all the time" Toph shrugged then started walking out. Lin rolled her eyes but followed.
"to be honest you look cute in my cloths" Kya whispered in her ear followed by a giggle, they were far enough behind Toph and Su that Toph wouldn't hear. in just rolled her eyes with a small smile.
They rode the ferry to the Island and were greeted by Aang who quickly rushed them inside. "take a seat get comfy Supper will be ready soon" He said acting very jittery and excited. Lin sat next to Kya who sat next to Bumi, and sat in a comfortable silince while they talked.
"So Bumi how was your time stationed in the fire nation" Kya said and wiggled her eye brows at her brother.
"Boring, I only got to visit Zumi once, and the commander yelled at me after the day off. 'Bumi just because your girlfriend is the heir to the fire nation dose not mean you can keep zoning out thinking about her!" Bumi said in a high mocking voice and Kya laughed.
They talked a bit longer before Katara came from the kitchen with trays of food. Everyone ate in relative silence, all captivated by the amazing food, before Aang spoke up. "I'm sure many of you are wondering why we've just randomly decided to have a get together, I've decided it's time for Tenzin to get his arrows" Aang said with a big smile and Tenzins jaw dropped.
"Seriously?!" Tenzin asked and aang nodded. Everyone took turns congratulating Tenzin Kya giving him a hug and Lin giving him a nod with a small smile.
"his ceremony will be in two weeks," Katara said
"that's lovely and all but I've got to get to work." Toph said standing up to leave.
"you do know there is some things more important then work" Katara said with a joking tone.
"I probably would stay a bit later, but we've been working on a big case and we're super close to a break through I wanna be there when it happens." Toph said then left.
"why don't we have a bon fire and make smores." Aang suggested.

Everyone agreed and went to get sweatshirts while Aang got the fire started. Kya looked through her closet and threw a hoodie that was already over sized on her in hopes of seeing her girlfriend in the giant hoodie.
"Kya this is giant" Lin said holding up to hoodie
"you'll be fine" kya said and grabbed a sweatshirt for herself and slipping it on. Lin had put the hoodie on and Kya thought she might actual scream at how cute Lin looked
"stop making that face" Lin huffed a blush gracing her cheeks.
"you're cute" Kya said giving Lin a kiss on the cheek. Lin in turn pulled Kyas face towards hers and met the waterbenders Lips with her own. The kiss was deep and passioate, nothing like Lin had experienced, she felt herself moan lightly into the kiss and felt Kyas lips turn into a smirk before sliding her tongue along the bottom of Lins lips. Lin seemed shocked for a moment before opening her mouth. She let the water bender explore her mouth, before pulling away due to a loud knock on the door.
"Kya, Lin, we're all waiting for you!" Tenzin's voice yelled through the door.
"we'll be out in a minute" Kya called glancing at Lin who's face was very flushed, Kya giggled lightly at her.
"stop laughing," Lin muttered hiding her face in the hoodie.
"Okay, okay, lets go" kya said grabbing Lins hand and pulling her towards the fire pit outside.
"took you guys long enough" Bumi said rolling his yes with a slight smirk on his face.
Lin and Kya sat down, they all sat in silence for a bit before it was interrupted ed by Su. "Smores!" Su yelled and Katara chuckled and nodded.
They all found sticks and started roasting their marshmallows. Kya looked over and chuckled lightly and Lins concentrated face, she was determined to get it the perfect golden brown, while Kya just burned marshmallow after marshmallow until Katara had to tell her no more. Kya had fake pouted and sat down next to Lin who was only on her second marshmallow.
"I told you not to burn them all" Lin chuckled and kya felt her grumpiness go away at the sight of Lins smile.
Once everyone was done with their smores, they all sat in around the fire talking and catching up. "Oh my spirits I can't believe I forgot to tell you guys, Me and Zumi and engaged" Bumi said excitedly
"how come you never told me you were gonna propose?" Kya said with mock hurt in her voice.
"I didn't, she proposed" Bumi chuckled
"well, we're all very happy for you" Aang said
"I call dibs on maid of honor!" Kya shouted
"I'm pretty sure that's Zumis choice" Bumi chuckled.
"Since we're sharing good news, I've been allowed to join the acadamy early" Lin said
"are you sure that's safe? I've heard the training is very hard core" Katara said
"well, it's police training, it's gonna be a bit tough, and besides I know some of the best healers in all of RC" Lin said
"that is true" Katara chuckled.
Aang moved on to telling some air nomad story and Kya felt a soft thump on her shoulder. She looked down to see Lin asleep resting her head on Kya. "well I think it's time we all go to sleep" Aang chuckled glancing at Lin.
Kya tried gently to wake Lin, but the metal bender wouldn't budge. She sighed and picked up Lin bridal style. She carried her to her room and laid her down on the bed, Lin was wearing sweatpants a t-shirt and Kya's hoodie so she'd be comfortable enough to sleep in. Kya changed out of her sweat shirt and dress than into shorts and a tank top, then laying next to Lin and pulling her girlfriend close to her soon falling into a peaceful sleep.
Kya woke late the next morning, Lin was already gone, Kya assumed back to her own house. She noticed there was a note on her night stand and read it.
dear Kya,
Me and Su had to go back home, I wanted to say bye in person but you were out like a light. I borrowed some cloths, I'll return them next time we see each other, which is hopefully soon.
Lin.
Kya smiled at how formal Lin's note was, she always wrote like that and Kya found it adorable. And then smiled again once she realized Lin hadn't returned Kya's hoodie from the night before. Kya went down stairs to grab some quick breakfast before going to plan her next trip. Her Original plan was to come back for a month after being in the south pole for eight, then go to the fire nation for three months and come back for Lin and Tenzins birthday, then stay two months until Bumis birthday. But she didn't think she could handle even three months with out lin. They had been 'partners' for a little over half a year, and she had become such a big part of Kyas life.
Tenzins ceremony was in two weeks and Kya would probably stay at least two weeks after that, then she could go to the fire nation for two months and still come home for Lin, Tenzins, and Bumis, birthdays. Kya smiled at the planing skills she had devolved over her time traveling, especially since her first trip she had completely messed up the planning and had to miss Izumis 20th birthday.
"Kya!" Bumi shouted through her door a few days later.
"what?" kya asked opening the door.
"wanna go to the city and get ice cream with me?"
"Bumi it's literally like 30 degrees why would we get ice cream.
"Because Ice cream is good" Bumi said and Kya finally noticed the light red ring around his eyes.
"alright, what have you been smoking this time?" Kya sighed
"Lilly weed" Bumi whispered
"how did you even get that? It's illegal."
"not in the fire nation, wanna try some?" Bumi smirked
Kya sighed "of course" Bumi laughed and she slipped on her sweat shirt from a few nights prior and followed him. He lead them to a cave on the back, more hidden part of the island and handed her a pipe.
Kya and Bumi spent a few hours smoking, both high out of their minds talking about the most random shit.
"me and Lin are girlfriends now." Kya giggled
"weren't you already?"
"no, kinda," Kya said not adding more
"okay"
"I think I love her" Kya sighed
"then tell her I told Zumi and now we're gonna get married. Holy Shit!"
"what?"
"I'm gonna be married to the fire lord!"
"cool," Kya giggled and Bumi did the same.
Once their giggle died down Bumi spoke again. "but seriously you should tell her."
"are you sober? I can't because like barley a month ago she just confessed her feelings what if it's to soon?"
"you guys are soulmates, it'll happen eventually" Bumi shurgged before adding: "and yes I might be give me the pipe." Kya laughed and handed him the pipe.
"Bumi? Kya?" Kataras voice called not far away
"shit!" Kya said
"we're fucked" Bumi said scrambling to get up and hide the lilly weed.
"oh there you guys are." Katara sighed before sniffing the air. "have you guys been smoking, and lilly weed. Lilly weeds illegal I didn't want that drug in the city me and your father built, and Kya you're underage, you're both grounded.
"you can't ground us we're adults" Kya argued
"I can when you live under my roof."
"then I'll move out," Kya huffed.
"and go where?" Katara asked
"it's a secret" Kya said in a mystical voice.
"great, you're still high" Katara rolled her eyes, not even noticing Bumi had passed out, and was now laying deep asleep on the ground.
Kya sat in her room taking a bit to sober up before going to the room with the radio to call Lin. Instead of Lins voice answering or even Toph it was Su.
"Hello?" Su asked
"Hi, it's Kya is Lin there?"
"No"
"where is she?"
"I dunno."
"are you home alone?"
"no I got a baby sitter, but I don't like him, he's boring."
"can you put him on the phone?" Kya asked
"sure" Su said, set the radio down, and walked away.
A few moments later she heard soft foor steps that could only belong to an air bender.
"Kya?" Tenzins voice questioned
"where's Lin?"
"She got her own apartment a few days ago, said she had a fight with Toph."
"do you know the number, or address?"
"yeah, I've got a note with the address, you can stop over here and I'll give you a copy."
"okay I'll be there soon" Kya nodded and hung up.
A few moments she was standing in the kitchen of Lins former home, wondering why the hell Lin hadn't told her she moved.
"there you go" Tenzin said handing Kya a note with Lins new address on it. She was about to walk out when Su stopped her.
"what that on your wrist?" SU asked wrapping herself around Kyas leg.
"that's my soulmate mark, it matches who ever's my soulmate." Kya said
"Linnys got one like that" Su said touching the mark.
Tenzin looked at Kya confused and Kya shrugged pretending to be just as confused.
"that's nice but I gotta go." Kya said untangling the four year old and leaving.
Kya knocked on the door to what was supposed to be Lins apartment, it was in a decently nice building and in between her former home and the police station. "go the fuck away mom!" Lin yelled opening the door, then realizing it was kya."shit sorry, how'd you find out I was here?"
"tried to call you and Su answered." Kya shrugged and walked into the apartment at Lins invite. It was a good size, a kitchen and living room area, then two bedrooms and a bathroom, Kya also assumed there was a bathroom attached to one of the bedrooms. "Su said you had a fight with Toph. Wanna talk about it?" Kya asked sitting down on the couch.
"not really," Lin muttered sitting next to Kya and laying her head on her shoulder. Kya didn't know how she had missed it before but Lin was wearing her big hoodie, Kya smiled softly to herself before talking again.
"it must have been bad, you're 16 and your mom bought you a nice apartment, to Live away from her, and I'm assuming shes paying for it." Kya said
"Su told her about my mark, she pointed it out during supper the night after we stayed at the island. Toph asked about it, I said I didn't know what Su was talking about, I said it in a rushed voice I slipped up, Toph new I was lying. I told her to mind her bisnius, she yelled, telling me that if I was gonna live in her house I shouldn't lie about something so big, I told her then I might as well move out because it wasn't the first time I lied and it wouldn't be the last." Lin sniffled" The next morning there were keys with a note with the address of this place on my nightstand. Toph said she had some one who was able to watch Su and that she didn't need me anymore." Lin said now starting to cry, during her rant she had scooted closer to Kya and was now basically in the water benders lap, her head resting in the crook of Kyas neck.
Kya rubbed her back comfortingly and peppered soft kissed on the top of her head. "I'm sorry" Lin sniffled.
"you don't need to apologize, what Toph said was stupid, she dose need you, who's gonna write her letters for her, and when I called Su she said you were a much better baby sitter then Tenzin." Kya comforted and Lin chuckled a bit at the last part.
They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes before Lin spoke up, "Kya,"
"yeah?"
"I love you" Lin said still not moving her head from Kyas neck.
Kya smiled, "I love you too," Lin looked up at her with a slight surprised look before smiling back. Kya cupped Lins cheek and pulled her into a gentle kiss.
Lin kissed back quickly deepening it, soon Kya was running her tongue along Lins bottom lip asking for permission. Lin happily obliged, Kyas tongue twisted around Lins and explored the metal benders mouth. Kya re-positioned them with out breaking the kiss so that Lin was laying on her back on the couch, and Kya propped above her on her elbows and knees. Kya moved to kissing Lins jaw line and neck sucking lightly causing the metal bender to let out light moans. Kya tugged on the bottom of the hoodie looking up at Lin for permission, and Lin nodded. Kya quickly slipped the hoodie off not surprised to see Lin in only her bindings underneath. Kya moved to kissing and sucking near her color bone leaving a few marks knowing these would be easier to cover.
Kya found a spot under Lins ear that caused the metal bender to let out a loud moan and Kya couldn't help but leave a mark there. Kya was about to ask for permission to remove Lins pants when there was a loud knock on the door, Kya decided to ignore it until someone yelled: "Kya I know your in there, get out here so we can talk!" Kataras voice yelled and Kya sighed rolling off of Lin.
lin hurriedly sat up and grabbed her hoodie slipping it on. Kya glanced back at Lin and saw some of the hickeys that weren't covered. 'hickeys' Kya mouth mouthiong to lin neck and jaw line. Lin sighed and glared at her before slipping the hood up and pulling the strings tight around her face.
Kya opened the door glaring at her mother,"what do you want?" Kya asked.
"Kya please don't move out, I'm sorry I yelled at you for getting high." Katara said
"I wasn't actually gonna move out I was just gonna stay with Lin for a day or two, until you apologized" Kya said and glanced back at Lin who had a confused face.
"Okay, are you gonna be home for supper, Lin can come too." katara offered and Kya shook her head.
"I think we'll stay here" Kya said and Katara nodded, glancing back at Lin.
"why's your hood up, and is that Kyas hoodie?" Katara asked
"um my hairs a mess and wouldn't cooperate, this was to only way to keep it out of my face, and this was just the first hoodie I found." Lin shrugged, and Katara nodded and left.
"Sorry about her" Kyas said flopping back on to the couch, Lin sitting beside her resting her head on her shoulder again, Kya wrapped and arm around Lin pulling her closer, and running her fingers through the metal benders hair.
"why were you high?" Lin asked after a bit.
"it's not something I do a lot," Kya sighed. "just whenever Bumi brings something back, we get high and just talk, it's our thing that Tenzin doesn't even know about, nobody did. This morning Bumi had Lilly weed, we did the same as always, but lily weeds a lot stronger then the stuff we normally use, we didn't notice mom was coming until it was to late. She got mad, I think it was mainly because lily weeds illegal and I'm underage, I don't think she would have cared a whole bunch if it were something less strong." Kya sighed, and Lin nodded.
After a few minutes of silence Kya spoke again. "can we talk about what happened before Katara came?" Lin nodded. "I'm sorry if I pushed you, you don't have to do anything you're uncomfortable with"
"I wasn't uncomfortable, it's just I've never done anything like that before, heck before we got together I'd barley kissed anyone." Lin sighed.
"okay, so it's a learning curve, I'm fine with going at whatever pace you're ready for." Kya said
"thanks" Lin murmured hiding her red face in Kyas neck, ever since Kya could remember Lins face would redden at mentions of even kissing when they were younger and Kya found it hilarious.
"Is it okay that I stay over, I forgot to ask before telling Katara." Kya chuckled
"yeah its okay, as long as you cook me something for supper, I'm sick of noodles." Lin chuckled.
"or we could finally go on a date." Kya offered.
"where?"
"wherever you want" Kya smiled
"I guess we could go to kwongs" Lin suggested
"I thought you were sick of noodles" Kya chuckled
"yeah, but Kwongs had good noodles, not the cheap stuff I get." Lin said and Kya laughed.
"Okay, then kowngs it is." Kya chuckled
"I'm gonna change then we can go" Lin said and Kya nodded. Kya was wearing a t-shirt with a water tribe symbol on it and blue jeans, it wasn't the nicest but it would work. A few minutes later Lin came out of her room in black skinny jeans and a plain emerald green long sleeve shirt. "uh Kya can you heal these?" Lin asked pointing to the dark hickeys on her neck, Kya chuckled and nodded following Lin into the bathroom attached to her bedroom.
Kya healed most of the hickys leaving the one behind her ear since it was barley noticeable, thanks to Lin's hair. "ready?" Kya asked grabbing Lins hand and after Lin nodded led them out the door.
They walked to Kwongs since it wasn't far holding hands the entire time. Despite the fact that it was only early spring and only 30 degrees Kya wasnt at all cold, Lin on the other hand, was shakeing and leaning in towards Kya for warmth. "you should've brought a coat" Kya laughed at her girlfriend.
"I didn't think it was gonna be this cold" Lin muttered and Kya wrapped and arm around her to keep her warm.
Soon they were at the restaurant and got a table towards the back. They ordered and talked about whatever came to mind until Kya trailed off seeing someone enter the restaurant. Lin turned around and sighed seeing Bumi and Izumi entering the restaurant.
Before Lin could stop her Kya was waving them over. "hey Linny, taking my sister out on a date?" Bumi joked and Lin sighed rolling her eyes.
"Zumi I didn't know you were gonna be in town." Kya said
"I didn't plan on coming until the end of the week, but at 2 am this morning Bumi sent me a messenger hawk demanding I come to the city because he thought you ran away" Izumi sighed.
"I forgot about time zones" Bumi defended then paused, "whats that by your ear Linny?" Bumi asked and Lins blush reddened.
"I thought you healed them all" Lin said angrily twards Kya.
"I couldn't resist, I didn't think anyone would notice." Kya laughed
"okay, okay, lets give the love birds some privacy, I'm hungry" Izumi said pulling Bumi away.
Soon they got their food and ate in relative silence. After eating they got a taxi because there was no way Lin was walking the 15 minutes back to her apartment after the weather had cooled 10 degrees.
"I'm gonna take a shower you're free to borrow something to sleep in. Lin said and walked towards the bathroom. Kya borrowed a shirt and a pair of sweat pants then laid down in bed. Soon Lin came out of the bathroom dressed in sweat pants and a tank-top and laid down next to Kya.
Kya pulled Lin closer to her so that the metal bender was practically laying on top of her and had her head resting on Kya chest. "when do you think we could tell everyone about us?" Kya asked running her fingers through Lins hair.
Lin looked up at her thinking for a bit before talking. "well Tenzins ceremony is in three days and I'm pretty sure the whole Gaang and their kids are stay at least a day or two after that, so maybe on Sunday? You could ask Katara to invite everyone over for supper."
"Okay, I'll ask her tomorrow, thanks for being willing to tell everyone." Kya said
"well it's been almost a year, and only Su and Toph even know I have a mark, I'm surprised we've kept it a secret this long." Lin said laying her head back down on Kyas chest. A few minutes later Lin was a sleep, soft snores coming from the metal bender, and soon after that Kya fell asleep.
The next morning Kya woke to Lin attempting to wiggle out of her arms. "why are you up so early?" Kya whined.
"I wanna go work out, you can go back to sleep." Lin murmured quietly and rolled off of Kya as the water bender loosened her grip.
"why do you work out so early?"
"I like having the gym to myself" Lin muttered
"fine, can I watch?" Kya smirked
"If you want" Lin shrugged.
Soon they were walking to the gym in Lins apartment complex, Kya still whining about how it was 'to damn early for this shit.'
"you don't have to come with, you can go back to bed" Lin chuckled.
"No, I wanna go with, it's just why in the world would you wanna work out at five in the morning, can't you work out at night" Kya mumbled.
"at night I'm to tired" Lin shrugged as they got to the gym.
Lin did her warm ups while Kya tried to wake herself up, and she did just in time Lin started her actual workout. She was atacking a metal dummy with all sorts of fancy moves, but all kya could focus on was the way the muscles moved in Lins arms and the slight sweat dripping down the back of her neck. Kya thought she might have actually got a nose bleed when Lin lifted her shirt to wipe sweat off her face, Lin glanced at her and chuckled before continuing her workout.
An hours later they were on there way back up to Lins apartment for Lin to shower, and Kya to make them something for breakfast.
A few days later it was time for Tenzins ceremony, Kya was helping her mother in the kitchen, they worked in relative silence until Kya spoke up. "How long is everyone gonna be here after the ceremony?"
"Zuko and his family are leaving two days after, Sokka and Suki a week." Katara said
"Do you think we could all have supper together tomorrow night?" Kya asked trying to hide her nervousness.
"sure, why?" Katara said with a confused look.
"there's something I wanna tell everyone, but didn't wanna interupt Tenzins moment" Kya shrugged
"what?" Katara asked
"You'll find out tomorrow." Kya said and went back to washing the dishes.
An hour later guest started arriving, family along with a few news reporters to capture the historic moment. Toph and Su arrived but there was no sign of Lin, even after Zukos and Sokkas familys arrived.
"have you seen Lin?" Bumi asked and Kya jumped not hearing him come up behind her.
"No, she's never late, what if something happened?" Kya asked worried, and turned towards the ferry insantly when she heard its whistle. It docked shortly after the sound and a grumpy looking Lin stormed off.
Kya instantly walked over to her asking what happened and if she was okay.
"I'm fine, Toph apparently can't sit for a five minute ferry ride with her daughter, and made me wait a half hour for the next one." Lin said glaring in the direction of her mother.
"oh I'm sorry, if I would've known I would have bent you over" Kya said wrapping Lin in a light hug.
"It's fine, you shouldn't be apologizing. Toph should, but shes to much of a bitch to admit something was dumb and not completely my fault." Lin muttered saying the bitch part a bit louder, causing Toph to flip her off from her spot a few meters away.
"come on, lets find good seats for Tenzins ceremony," Kya said walking towards the large tent they had set up.
"aren't you gonna be up on stage?" Lin asked
"nope, just mom and dad, but I'd rather sit with you anyways." Kya said.
The next day Kya and Lin were at Lins apartment getting ready for supper in an hour when they would tell everyone about them. Lin came out of the shower wrapped in a towel to see Kya brushing her hair, Kya looked up and smiled at the earthbender, lin offered a nervous one back. "how are you feeling? Kya asked
"nervous." Lin responded
"me too" Kya sighed
"what if they don't support us?" Lin asked, digging through her closet for some cloths.
Kya sighed again, "we know Bumi and Izumi do, and most of the people there have already made jokes about us being soulmates, I am worried about my mother though. She always used to leave whenever dad was teaching us about the airbender beilief about people loving whoever."
"I'm sure she wouldn't say anything to bad, you're her only daughter" Lin tried to comfort kya.
"lets hope not," kya sighed and Lin nodded.
Lin found a light green slightly dressy tank top and paired it with black skinny jeans. "dose this look okay?" Lin asked
"it looks great," Kya smiled and pulled lin in for a kiss. Lin deepened it holding kyas waist, Kya smirked and ran her tongue along Lins bottom lip, Lin happily allowed kyas tongue to enter lins mouth. Lin let out a small moan and kya lead them towards the bed climbing onto the metal bender and straddling her once Lin laid down. Kya left lins mouth and started leaving hickeys on Lin's exposed collar bone.
"Fuck, Kya" Lin moaned which spurred kya on more, until lin eventually pushed kya away, "As much as I would love to contiue we've got to go" Lin breathed.
"or we could skip" Kya smirked
I thought you wanted to tell our familys about us?" Lin asked
"I do but, I would much rather continue what we're doing. This is okay right?" kya asked
"yes, it's wonderful, but we won't have another chance for everyone to be together for awhile. The bed will still ba here afterwards" Lin smirked
"I suppose" Kya sighed giving Lin a quick kiss before rolling off her and going to finish her hair.
"will you heal these, all of them" Lin said giving Kya a slight glare remembering what had happened a few days ago.
Kya chuckled and nodded as she finished her hair
45 minutes later they were getting out of a taxi at the docks just in time for the ferry.
Lin and kya got off the ferry hand in hand both very nervous, Lins mark was on full display, it wouldn't be hard to figure out what their announcement was. They made their way up to the house and stood in the door way waiting for someone to notice in hopes of not having to announce it. Izumi was the first to notice, but just them a small smile for now. Next was Sokka and he gasped walking up to them.
"I knew it!" he shouted
"no you didn't" Kya chuckled
"I knew there was something going on between you to" He argued
"sure you did" Lin said with a small smile and an eye roll.
"okay, what did Sokka know." Suki asked walking up beside her husband. She to gasped when she saw, "oh girls, I'm so happy for you. How long have you known?"
"since Lins birthday" Kya said bashfully.
"and you didn't think to tell you favorite uncle and aunt?" Sokka gasped in offence
"you know now" Lin offered
"I guess that's fair" Sokka said and him and suki left leaving Aang to come up to his daughter and her girlfriend.
"oh kya dear, this is wonderful." he said kissing her forehead. "and Lin I always knew you'd be my daughter someday" he said giving her a light hug,"
"thank you dad" Kya said and Lin nodded along to emotional to speak.
Next was Zuko who offered them both congratulations. Than Bumi and Izumi who offered them both hugs. "mom?" Kya asked looking towards her mother who hadn't said anything yet.
"I wish you would have told me sooner, this could have been avoided" katara sighed
"what could have?" Kya asked nervously
"you're really gonna make me say it in front of all our family?" Katara asked
"say what?" Kya said tightening her grip on Lins hand
"how messed up this is, I don't know why the spirits chose to curse my family, but you didn't need to share it with everyone" Katara sighed
"what?" Kya asked in a choked tone
"this curse of homosexuality, it's unnatural, I experienced enough of being around it when sokka was young!" Katara said.
"that's enough!" Sokka shouted standing up from his spot on the couch.
"No, I don't know why the spirits hate me but I'm done with it! It is gross and unnatural. The spirits fixed you thankfully they gave you a beautiful soulmate and cured you, but there's no fixing these two, I don't know what to do"
"mom! how could you even say that." Bumi shouted
"Bumi stay out of this, your lucky you weren't cursed by this homosexual spirit." katara said
"get out!" Sokka shouted "how could you say stuff like this to your children, you're soulmates with an airbender for fucks sake!"
"stop getting mad you were cured, you ever wonder why Zuko doesn't have a soulmate? Because the spirits were upset with him, I prayed for weeks that you would be cured and you were." katara said
All the kids looked in shock at Zuko and Sokka "Katara you had no right to say that, you know why we broke up, it had nothing to do with the spirits curing my homosexuality" Sokka shouted his face obviously hurt.
"than what was it? The spirits are the ones who made you and Suki soulmates, they were leading you in the right direction to get back together." Katara said
"Katara sweetie lets go outside" Aang said leading his wife outside.
Lin looked up at Kya who had tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry you guys had to see that" Sokka said.
"I-i need to-" Kya said before letting go of Lins hand running out the door.
Lin eyes followed her not sure weather or not to follow, but sokka but a hand on her shoulder. "I'll go talk to her, I've experience this sort of thing already" he sighed and Lin gave him a small nod.

Kya ran to a secluded beach on the far end of the island and didn't realize until she got there and sat down that Sokka had followed her. "hey" Sokka offered
"hi" Kya sniffled
"I'm sorry you had to experience that, I thought she had grew out of that."
"it's fine," Kya hesitated for a moment. "what happened between you and Zuko?"
Sokka sighed. "we had a thing, it wasn't long after the war ended, mae had just broke up with him, and me and suki decided to go our separate ways, since she had to go back to the kyoshi warroirs. I was 15 and hadn't gotten my mark yet. Everyone figured that Zuko had one and just hadn't told them. Me and him were close friends, the closest out of the gaang. One night he told me he didn't have a mark, he thought the spirits were punishing him. I asked why, and he explained part of the reason him and mae broke up was because he had feelings for a guy. I had been in denial about my feelings for him since a little after me and Suki broke up. So, I kissed him, and he kissed back. we started dating in secret, but one day Katara found us kissing, she flipped out, shouting about how it was unnatural, and demanding Aang and Toph agree with her. Aang of course didn't and starting talking about how in the air nation people could love who they wanted, Toph didn't either, I'm fairly sure she's had her fair share of experience with women." Sokka chuckled lightly. "Katara was upset, and demanded we brake up, it was a few days before my 16th birthday and I already knew Zuko didn't have a soulmate, so we did, we both knew it was going no where, and that was confirmed when my mark had a kyoshi fan, Suki hadn't gotten hers yet but it was pretty obvious we were soulmates. So we got back together and now we are where we are today." Sokka finished
"Do you ever miss being with Zuko?" Kya asked
"I did for a bit, but than I realized we were better off as friends anyways."
"I bet mom appreciated that" kya said bitterly
"your mom has some messed up beliefs, the southern water tribe never taught us anything about homosexuality so Katara assumed it was bad, we've tried to explain it to her, but she's just set on her beliefs" Sokka sighed. "She still loves you, it just might take awhile for her to open up"
Kya nodded, "I think I wanna got travel again, I was gonna stay longer, but I don't think I can handle being here right now."

"bye Sokka, thank you" Kya said and hugged him.
"of course" Sokka smiled.
They made their way back up to the temple to find Lin standing outside looking nervous. "are you okay, I wanted to follow but I wasn't sure whether you'd want me to, than Sokka offered-" Kya cut Lin off with a kiss and a smile
"I'm okay," Kya hesitated, "I think I'm gonna leave early, I just need to get out of the city for awhile," Kya said
"okay, whatever you need, When?" Lin asked
"tonight" Kya said hesitantly
"oh, okay, I'm be here when you get back." Lin said and kya smiled at her.
"I love you," Kya said
"I love you too" Lin murmured
"bye"
"I'll be waiting"
And with that Kya walked back into the house to pack, and Lin took the ferry home.
It wasn't until 21 years later when Lin saw Kya again, at Aangs funeral. Kya had wrote for the first year or so of her travels but after that the letters became rarer and rarer, until they dwindled to only a small trinket or something she had collected during her travels sent a week or two before or after Lins birthday.
"hi" Lin said as she stood next to kya after the funeral.
"Hey" Kya answered, Non of them said anything for a bit, Katara shot them a look through her tears but didn't say anything.
"how long are you here for?" Lin asked
"I leave in an hour," Kya sighed

"what happened to your face?"

"it's okay if you want to be with someone else if you haven't already, my mom is obviously still upset and I don't think I'll be coming back for awhile yet."

"Kya can you come over here!" Tenzin called from a few meters away and Kya headed over there.
After that Lin didn't see Kya for 17 years later, she got a letter from Katara saying that kya was in the south with her, and she was sorry for how she had reacted so many years ago not long after kya left for the second time, but neither Lin or Kya bothered to write. Lin had eventually been with other people, she gave her first time to a random stranger while drunk, and continued to have drunken one night stands in hope of forgetting Kya, it never worked.
One night Lin was resting in her bed, it was a very rare occurrence that she was even home, she had been so busy with the after math of amon, and than not long after that Vaatu, plus the usual never ending triads throughout the city.
She briefly remembered Tenzin telling her that Kya was in the city, but it didn't full register, until she was sleepily opening the door to reveal the beautiful water bender.
"hey" Kya said nervously, Lin slammed the door in her face. over the years of Kya being gone, Lin had grown more and more angry at her soulmate. Kya hadn't even bothered to write to Lin after leaving the second time, she had to find out about the waterbender from Tenzin who was apparently receiving frequent letters.
"Lin, please" Kya said through the door

"you've had multiple chances to do that for the past nearly 40 years"

"Tenzin said that you missed me"

"yes! he told me you ask about me all the time."
"he was lying"
"will you please just let me in your neighbors are looking at me funny"
Lin sighed and opened the door, Kya stumbled in.
"Hi" Kya said
"you wanna talk, than talk" Lin said
"I'm sorry"
"you already said that"
"well what do you want me to say Lin, I'm trying a really am!"
"you could've tried years ago, I'm to old to deal with your bullshit"
"I'm older than you"
"Wow I had no idea" Lin rolled her eyes
"come on, why are you mad?"
Lin barked out a laugh, "why am I mad? Are you crazy? You left me 40 years ago and have not tried once to come back! Hell you haven't even wrote for the past 35!"
"it's only been 38" Kya said quietly
"get out"
"lin, come on we're soulmates, I love you"
Lin turned away, "I don't have a soulmate anymore."
Kya let out a sob and left. After that Lin broke down. She didn't go to work the next day, or the next, the day after that she finally got out of bed only to start steadily draining her liquor cabinet, and that how it continued for a week until she awoke for a drunken slumber on her couch to a knock on her door.
"chief?" Makos voice shouted through Lin used bending to unlock and open the door letting him in. "che- Oh my" Mako said
"what do you want kid?" Lin slurred
"you haven't been to work for a week, people are starting to worry"
"oh"
"what happened?" mako asked than hesitated, "I didn't know you had a soulmate mark" Mako said seeing it on lins exposed bicep since she was wearing a tank top.
"As far as I'm concerned I don't" Lin shrugged
"oh" Mako looked around again, "spirits how much have you drank?"
Lin shrugged as Mako found a garbage bag and started picking up empty bottles, "you don't have to do that kid"
"I want to" mako shrugged
They didn't say anything for awhile and Lin eventually fell back a sleep. It must have been over an hour later when she woke up, she could hear Mako moving around probably picking up the mess in her room. Now that she was much more sober she felt shame rise in her chest, Mako shouldn't have to be picking up her mess. Mako walked out of her room with a full trash bag, Lin noticed another one by the door.
"hey chief?" Mako asked as he set the bag next to the other
"yeah"
"um, are you and Kya soulmates? Sorry that was inappropriate to ask, I just saw some pictures in your room of you together and in one she's kissing your cheek and a week ago I was at the island and she came back late one night looking upset, and since you haven't been to work for a week...... sorry I shouldn't be asking you stuff like that."
"it's fine kid, at this point you could ask anything, you're cleaning up my house after finding me drunk out of my mind on my couch for fucks sake. " Lin sighed" yes,"

"more like were, haven't been for 38 years,"

"I was 16 in those pictures, that was a long time ago."
"can I ask what happened?"
"I already said you can ask anything." Lin sighed" Her mom didn't support, it broke Kya, she couldn't bear to be in the same city as her mom, so she left, her heart always did belong more the the world than me anyways."
"katara?"
"yes, she obviously supports now and has apologized since, but Kya never came back, she stayed in the south with her mom after Aang died, she didn't bother to write once."
"I still think you should talk to her."
"and since when do you know so much about love?" Lin asked
"never" Mako chuckled
"do you even have a soulmate?"
"I have a mark haven't found my soulmate yet." mako shrugged.
"well good luck with that, and thank you, for everything you did today." Lin sighed
"don't mention it, will you be back at work tomorrow?"
"yes"
"okay, I should be heading back, but I'm serious please talk to Kya."
"we'll see" Lin said as Mako left taking the trash with him. Lin thought for a bit, Mako had cleaned her entire house and made sure she was okay, she supposed she should repay him in some way. she walked to the phone and called Air Temple Island.
"Hello?" Pema answered
"It's Lin, uh could you have Kya come to the phone." Lin said nervously.
"Of course," Lin could practically hear Pemas smile, she knew Tenzin had told Pema about Kya and Lin, he didn't know the full story, just that they had broke up and Lin was upset about it.
"Lin?" Kya's voice came a few moments later.
"Hey" Lin said shakily.
"Hi" Kya said and Lin could hear the happiness in her voice.
"um, could you uh come over, I wanna talk."
"of course, I'll be there soon."
15 minutes later Lin opened the door for Kya "hey" Kya said
"hi"
"I'm sorry" They both said at the same time.
"uh you first" Kya said, and Lin nodded.
"I'm sorry for shouting at you, and I shouldn't have been upset, you were healing and I didn't even try to write once."
"you don't need to be sorry for the second part, I should've tried to write, after the funeral I was worried that you did find someone else and wouldn't want me writing"
"I told you'd I'd wait"
"but I didn't want you to, I felt like I didn't deserve you,"
Lin let out a sad laugh "when we were together I felt like I didn't deserve you for so long even after that I felt like I wasn't worthy"
Kya let out a small laugh of her own, "this all could have been avoided if we'd talked"
"yeah that would've helped" lin chuckled.
They stood in silence for a moment, until Kya broke it. "So um is it okay if I kiss you?"
"Absolutely" Lin said and Kya pulled her in for a kiss. Lin wrapped her arms around Kya's neck while Kya held her waist and led them towards the bedroom. Lin kicked the door open and kya led them to the bed laying Lin down and climbing on top of her.

"I can't Mako probably sent a search party since I promised I'd be at work today."
"let them search, I'm tired"
"Chief!!!" Korras voice rang out.
"and that's my cue to answer the door before she breaks it open and finds us like this." Lin sighed.
"Be quick " Kya said. Lin got up and slipped on a tank top and sweatpants before going to open the door.
She opened it to find Korra, Asami, Bolin, and Mako. "finally" Korra said
"whats this about?"
"well you weren't at work, and than Korra said Kya was missing so...." Mako said with a small smirk and Lin glared at him.
"I just slept i-"
"Oh my spirits whats that and are those hickeys?" Korra asked and Lin felt a blush rise to her face.
"I tripped their bruises" Lin lied
"sure, wanna explain why you and Kya have the same mark, she's missing, and you're covered in hickeys" Korra smirked
"oh my gosh oh my gosh!!!" Bolin said excitedly even Asami had a small smirk.
"fine, maybe me and Kya are soulmates," Lin sighed
"is she here right now?" Korra asked excitedly
"maybe, but I've got to be getting ready for work so you really should leave." Lin said
"Nope, cheif you deserve another day off" Mako said with a smirk.
"that thing I said about you being able to ask or say anything applied to yesterday and yesterday only" Lin glared at him.
Mako was about to respond when Kya walked up behind her, hugging the chief from behind. "Linny come back to bed" Kya whined and Lin felt the newly gone blush re-appear.
Team avatar all snickered. "you know what chief take two days off" Mako chuckled and Lin bent the door closed and locked it.
"you're evil" Lin said turning around to face Kya while still having the water benders arms wrapped around her.
"you love me" Kya said leaning her forehead against Lins
"I do" Lin smiled.
