Because of the severe neglect from her parents, Eleanor Shellstrop dies as a child. She ends up in The Bad Place and gets tortured. Eventually, Michael is assigned to make her life miserable, and he does for a while, but when he looks at her file, he's very confused as to why she's in The Bad Place. Michael pretends to torture Eleanor when in reality, they're starting to bond with each other. The two of them work towards understanding why Eleanor ended up in The Bad Place even though she hadn't done anything particularly horrible and investigate the problems with the afterlife.
I'm kind of thinking that this'll be a found family situation, but whether Michael is a father figure or they're more like siblings is totally up to you! Also, feel free to play around with time in the afterlife vs on earth. Jearimy Bearimy, right?
