The Three Fortunes

Summary:

"And..." She furrowed her eyebrows together, confused. She slowly opened her eyes, blinking at Sokka.

"What?" He asked, his palm still in her hands. She closed her eyes one last time, feeling that spot on his hand again. Then she opened her eyes yet again, looking at him.

"Lastly, it says you will... fall in love with the Fire Lord?" Sokka's eyes widened at her words as he pulled his hand out of her grasp. He then repeatedly shook his head in disbelief.

Or: Sokka gets his three fortunes from Aunt Wu. One of them claims he'll fall in love with the Fire Lord.

Notes:

Just so you know, this is also posted on my Wattpad so I didn't steal from myself. Anyways... enjoy!!! :)

Work Text:

Katara and Aang have found an obsession with fortune telling. While Sokka found it to be the most ridiculous thing to ever exist, the rest of the Earth Kingdom town disagreed. Every person seemed to be brain washed into believing in this garbage, which disgusted Sokka but delighted the younger two.

So, that's how Sokka found himself being practically dragged into Aunt Wu's place, Katara and Aang both smiling from ear to ear, asking for a fortune. Aunt Wu obviously said yes, and Katara was sent back to get her's.

"This is stupid." Sokka mumbled, sitting down on the pillows with his legs crossed. Aang slid down onto the pillow next to him, bumping his shoulder into Sokka's, although he wasn't too successful concidering Sokka was quite a bit taller than the air nomad.

"I'm sure it'll be fun!" Aang smiled, reaching for a bowl of some sort of snack that was in front of them. Sokka looked at him, unconvinced but sighed and reached for the snack as well. His eyes lit up at the taste and immediately grabbed more.

When Katara finished up, Aang went in. Sokka raised his eyebrow at his sister who seemed to be very happy. "I'm assuming the fortune went well?" He said, taking another bite of the snack. Katara nodded, sitting down in the same spot Aang once was.

"Do I even want to know..." Sokka mumbled, mouth full.

Aang finished up a few minutes later meaning it was sadly Sokka's turn. He huffed as he stood up, deciding it would be better to just get it over with. He went down a narrow hallway and into a room. It was big with four pillars forming a square towards the middle and a fire across from two pillows on the floor. Aunt Wu motioned for him to sit on the cushion across from her, so he did.

When he sat down, he let Aunt Wu wordlessly took his hand into her own. He watched her with a bored expression as she roamed her fingers along the lines in his palm, her eyes closed.

"Yes... yes I see." She hummed and opened her eyes. "Here, it says you will be married to a world leader." Sokka made a face, his eyebrow scrunched together.

She then closed her eyes again, running her fingers along another line on his palm. "Here..." She kept her eyes closed as she spoke, "it says you will become a very important political figure as an adult."

"Oh boy..." He mumbled as she searched for the last fortune on his palm. At last, she made a noise of triumphant.

He stood up, taking a deep breath. "That thing isn't real. There's no way..." She stood up as well, folding her hands in front of her.

"It's true. All my predictions come true in one way or another." She said with great pride. Sokka rolled his eyes, turning away to walk out.

When he got back to the room Katara and Aang were in, he ignored their laughter as he spoke up. "We're leaving." He said, leaving no room for excuses as he walked out of the building.

As he exited, Aunt Wu walked in, her mouth formed into a frown.

"Aunt Wu?" Katara said, standing up, "what happened?" Aang stood up as well, standing beside Katara. Aunt Wu stood not too far away from them, yet she kept her eye on Sokka who was walking down the street.

"One of his predictions claimed he would marry the Fire Lord."

Katara gulped, looking over at Aang who's eyes were wide. "Oh.." She mumbled.

It wasn't until a few weeks after the Invasion at the North Pole that Sokka's fortune was brought up. For the past months, neither Katara or Aang brought it up. And Sokka most definitely did not. He honestly forced himself to not believe it, although in the back of his mind, there was a voice whispering how it was true.

"Who are the possible heirs to the throne in the Fire Nation?" Aang asked on a random night. The Gaang was sitting by a fire, eating some random conjunction Katara mixed up that was supposed to be their dinner.

Katara looked at Sokka who looked at her, both thinking. "I'm pretty sure Fire Lord Ozai only has two kids. Princess Azula and then obviously Zuko." Katara finally said, her gaze settling back on Aang.

Aang nodded slowly, his eyes trained on the bowl of food in his hand as he spoke, "So, does that mean Sokka's going to marry one of them?" He then looked up at the Water Tribe siblings.

Sokka sputtered, setting his bowl down before waving his hands in the air, "You two know?" He then crossed his arms, "And that isn't going to happen."

Katara sighed, "Sokka. Yes, we know. Aunt Wu told us. And, Aunt Wu is never wrong. I wish it wasn't true, but it is." She then took a bite of her food, only partly wincing at the taste.

He just rolled his eyes at his sister, "It isn't going to happen. Why would I marry someone from the Fire Nation? Let alone a royal?" He huffed.

"Well, maybe they'll have a change of heart." Aang suggested, shrugging.

"Technically, Zuko lost his title as Prince, so he's no longer in line for the throne. So, looks like you're marrying Azula." Katara stated, giving her brother a glance. Sokka was most definitely not happy, his face was scrunched up in what could only be described as disgust.

"You're insane. I'd never marry Azula... whoever that is." Sokka grumbled.

Katara just shrugged, continuing to eat her food. Aang also went back to eating. Sokka however, just sat there, no longer hungry. He began to worry.

Could Aunt Wu's fortune actually be true?

Zuko joining their team was something Katara was definitely not happy about. Aang needed a fire bending teacher, so he quickly accepted Zuko as a friend. Sokka was skeptical about it at first, not quite trusting him yet. But after the Boiling Rock, he learned to like him. Despite how he seems to be, Zuko's actually a pretty good guy.

So, with the team now being on Ember Island, Sokka concidered Zuko to be one of his friends. And besides, it was refreshing to have a boy on the team that was his age.

One night, the Gaang; Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, and Suki, were all hanging out by the built in fire outside of the beach house. They were now a few weeks away from Sozin's Comet, and despite their nervous jitters, they still managed to have some fun.

So, they were currently telling stories as well as chatting about past adventures or other random topics. Such as fortune telling.

"See? My fortune is better than Aang's." Katara said proudly, feeling oddly competitive. Toph just rolled her eyes, or attempted to at least. Sokka, on the other hand, was trying to make himself seem as small as possible. He did not want his fortune to be brought up. Especially with Zuko over there.

The thought of Zuko gaining his honor back and becoming the next Fire Lord has already crossed his mind about a million times since he joined their team. The thought of marrying him made him feel surprisingly flustered. Almost as if he wanted it to happen, but not quite.

Falling in love with Zuko seemed more possible than falling in love with Azula, who he despited due to to their interaction at the Solar Eclipse Invasion. He couldn't stand the thought of loving her. She wasn't capable of loving anyone or anything, and she most definitely wasn't capable of being loved either.

Zuko on the other hand turned out to be one of Sokka's best friends. The thought of loving Zuko seemed possible and realistic. But, they were both men. Men loving men wasn't an unknown thing. It was known in every nation, yet frowned upon greatly in the Fire Nation. Fire Lord Sozin was said to have made it illegal before his death. So unless that law becomes undone, Sokka doesn't see how it would be possible.

And there's the whole, 'do I even like guys' thing going on in his head currently that he can't seem to make go away. He knew he liked girls. He thought he had a thing for Suki, but that quickly faded after the fortune really sunk in. Yue was a nice thing that he had going on, but she... turned into the moon, so, that's out of the question.

Boys though? He never really grew up with many boys. At least not at the age of when a child would actually start having crushes. He did find himself thinking a few guys were cute during their journey with Aang, but he didn't really think much of it.

And any person who could see (sorry Toph) would know that Zuko is clearly attractive. He then realized, it most definitely was not normal for him to be trying to convince himself so much that he only liked girls if he actually did only like girls.

The call of his name is what got him out of his thoughts.

"Sokka? Sokka?" Katara called for almost the seventh time. Sokka's head suddenly snapped up, looking at everyone.

"What?" He asked, his face slightly red from embarrassment. Katara just rolled her eyes of having to repeat her question.

"I said, would you like to share your fortunes?" Her displeased expression that was once on her face morphed into a small smirk. Her eyes going back and forth between Zuko and Sokka.

Sokka's face somehow reddened even more as he quickly shook his head, waving his hands in front of his face. "No! No, no, no. That's a no and that's final." He said, letting his arms fall back onto his lap.

Suki and Zuko both raised their eyebrows at him while Toph only just snorted. "What fortune did you get to make your heart speed up so damn much?"

"Toph!" Katara hissed, "No swearing."

Toph just waved her arms towards her in a dismissive manner, and other than that, ignored her. "I need to know what this fortune is, Snoozles."

Sokka shook his head again. "Nope. Not happening."

Aang sighed, "Then tell us the other two. You don't have to tell us..." He quickly glanced at Zuko, yet it went unknown to the Fire Nation prince, "the other one."

Sokka mumbled some unkind words under his breath about everyone before sighing in defeat. "Fine! Fucking dammit." Katara gave him a look for cursing but said nothing.

"One was that I'll be a very important political figure in the future." He then waited for some sort of response from the others.

"I hate politics." Toph said. Sokka just rolled his eyes at her, for once greatful that she couldn't see him.

"The other one was that..." He suddenly grimaced, remembering the other one. "Wait no, I can't. That one's too close to--"

Katara sighed deeply, "Sokka. Just tell us." Toph nodded in agreement yet the other three stayed awfully silent.

He glared at her, she glared back before he gave in. "Fine. It said that I'll marry a world leader." He crossed his arms, leaning against his legs.

Suki's eyebrows shot up in surprise while Zuko blinked a bit, processing the information. Toph laughed a bit, though it wasn't loud enough to be considered a cackle, it was close enough. Katara pressed her lips together, now knowing why he was so hesitant and Aang just frowned.

"Well..." Suki finally said after Toph's laughter slowed down. Sokka looked to the side, avoiding eye contact with everyone.

"What world leader do you think it'll be? There's only like..." Toph furrowed her eyebrows together, "Well there's the Fire Lord, The Earth King, and I guess the North Pole... leader whatever he's called." She then faced him.

Sokka shrugged. Katara twirled her hair around her fingers. Aang leaned his chin against his knees.

"Is that the third fortune?" Zuko, shockingly, said. Sokka's head snapped over to look at him. Suki nodded at Zuko's words, now also curious.

"Uhm." Sokka mumbled.

"Hey, did I ever tell you guys the story on how I stood up to a sexist waterbending jerk?" Katara asked, changing the subject. She shot Sokka a small wink that he greatfully smiled at.

Now at the White Lotus camp, the Gaang (minus Aang) was gathered around yet another camp fire, talking to Iroh about the plans for Sozins comment.

"Uncle, will you be taking the throne as the Father Lord if my Father is defeated?"

Toph made a face at Zuko's wording, "You mean Fire Lord?"

Zuko shrugged, "That's what I said."

Iroh shook his head, resting his tea cup on the saucer. "I'm afraid not. Being the Fire Lord is not my destiny. I instead wish to reopen my tea shop in Ba Sing Sa once the White Lotus and I reconquer it." His gaze then fully locked on Zuko, "You however, my nephew, will be the next Fire Lord."

Katara and Aang's heads immediately snapped towards Sokka who's face dropped. He didn't know how to react, so instead, he just got up, mumbled an excuse and ran off into into his tent.

His brain was filled with so many thoughts that he couldn't keep track of them. He came to terms a while ago that he probaly liked Zuko, and that he may be the next Fire Lord, but to actually hear words of confirmation...

He sat in his tent for a while, time slipping by. He had his back turned to the entrence of the tent, his head tilted down to look at his lap. He twisted and pulled at the loose ends of his bandages that were wrapped around his wrists, not knowing what else to do.

Then, he heard footsteps slowly approach his tent. Sighing and mentally preparing himself for a lecture from Katara, he moved his fingers away from his bandages. So when he heard someone enter the tent, he didn't hesitate to call out. "Katara, please, I'm not in the mood."

But the voice he heard did not belong to Katara. "Uhm, it's me, Zuko..." He quickly turned his head around, eyes widening when he saw the one and only kneeling down by the entrence of his tent.

He quickly scrambled to properly sit in front of him, face to face, his cheeks probably red but he didn't have time to think about that. "Oh. Zuko... sorry. Uhm. What's up?" He asked, attempting for a smile but failing miserably.

"Is everything okay? You... you left abruptly when Uncle said that I would become Fire Lord." He said slowly, careful to not assume.

Sokka chuckled, though it came out nervous and unsure sounding, "Yeah... sorry."

"What was that all about?" Zuko tilted his head slightly, and Sokka couldn't help but think of it as the cutest thing ever.

He then remembered that he was asked a question. He cleared his throat and shook his head. "It's nothing. Really. I'm not... upset that you'll be Fire Lord, if that's what your thinking."

The must of been exactly what Zuko was thinking because he then let out a sigh of relief, the corners of his lips tilted upwards. "Okay, that's a relief." He then paused, mouth no longer tilted upwards. "But if it wasn't that, then what was it?"

Sokka looked away, gaze settling on Zuko's lap instead of his face. "It's nothing. Really. Just, let's drop it." He looked up, "Okay?"

Zuko nodded, "Okay. But, if you need anything, I'm here for you." He then smiled and leaned forward, pressing a quick kiss to Sokka's cheek. Almost as if he immediately regretted his decision, he backed away, mumbling a sorry before quickly exiting the tent.

Sokka sat there, face red, as he lifted up his hand to touch at the spot that Zuko kissed him at. He then smiled and let out a very non-manly noise, falling down to the ground.

The wars over. It has been for years. Now at the age of twenty five, Sokka couldn't be more happy. It kills him everyday to admit how the fortunes he received were right, but he did end up falling in love and marrying Zuko. Who yes, did become the Fire Lord.

Telling Zuko the whole story was probaly the funniest part.

It was a few months after Sokka proposed with a betrothel necklace that he told Zuko.

"So, babe, I have something to tell you." Sokka said one morning as they sat by the turtle duck pond. The two were both twenty four at the time, a rare month where they were each the same age. Zuko turned to his fiancé, eyes curious.

"Yeah?" Zuko asked, his hand still petting the mama turtle duck.

Sokka chuckled, tossing another piece of bread into the pond. He watched as a baby swam up to it and gobbled it right up, then stared at Sokka, asking for more. "So, you know about those fortunes Katara, Aang and I got years ago?"

Zuko shrugged, "Sure. I remember it a bit. You acted weirdly about them."

Sokka nodded. "Right. So, the reason for that was because the last fortune I got said that I would fall in love with the Fire Lord." He kept his gaze on a baby turtle duck, feeding it another piece of bread.

It wasn't until Zuko grabbed Sokka's cheeks with both hands, turning his face towards him that he finally saw his reaction. "What?" Zuko said, eyes wide. "That's what it was?"

Sokka laughed and nodded as best as he could with Zuko's hands still on his cheeks. He faintly heard the baby turtle duck quack at him for not feeding them anymore. Zuko just groaned, burying his face in Sokka's chest, his hands falling down from Sokka's face to instead rest on his shoulders.

"Do you know how much pinning we could've avoided if you just asked me out as soon as we became friends?" Zuko whined. Sokka laughed again and wrapped his arm around Zuko's back, rubbing up and down.

"Yeah, but I didn't quite believe in fortune telling. And besides, how was I supposed to know that you liked me too back then?"

Zuko huffed, "I told you, I started to like you right before we went to the Boiling Rock." He mumbled, face still on Sokka's chest.

"Well I didn't know that back then!" Sokka exclaimed, "I mean, I was in denial of liking you until we wounded up on Ember Island anyways."

Zuko sighed and finally sat up, hands back on Sokka's cheeks. He moved closer until their faces were inches apart. "You're stupid." He muttered.

Sokka smirked, "Yeah, no kidding. I'm engaged to you."

Zuko scoffed and banged their foreheads together causing Sokka to whine in pain. "Ow!" He rubbed his forehead while Zuko looked at him, a smirk now on his face instead.

"That's what you get." He crossed his arms. Sokka shot him a playful glare before gripping the back of Zuko's neck.

"I fucking love you so much." He muttered, face inches from Zuko's.

Zuko hummed in response. "I know." He then broke the space between them, pressing his lips up against Sokka's.

Sokka may of not believed in fortune telling all those years ago, but now that he's married to Zuko, and planning on adopting a child with him, he's really happy it turned out to be true.
