Chapter Text
Tulsa Oklahoma,
April 4th 1965
Sammy sighed. Anxiety filling her. She was currently standing in front of the Curtis brother’s household at 10pm on a Tuesday. The lights were on and the house was bustling with noise.
Just as she was about to take a step and walk away, the door opened. She froze in place, looking up at who opened it.
It was an older male. His hair greased back except for one curly strand. He was wearing a sleeveless, gray shirt with Mickey Mouse on the front
“Hello?”
He looked down at her, raising a brow
“Um…Can I talk to Darrel Curtis please?”
He gave a wary look
“Yeah…Sure. Darry!”
Sammy could feel her chest tighten. Darry walked down the stairs. When he saw her, his eyes widened
“You?-...”
“The court said I could visit.”
His face darkened, making him look weathered with age.
“It’s time, huh?”
She nodded, looking down at her shoes. She could hear the blood flowing through her ears.
“So that means you’re 16?”
“Yessir. Just turned 16 last week.”
He dusted his hands on his jeans
“Happy birthday kid. You look-”
“Different. Yea I know. I'm going by Sammy now.”
Her tone was a little harsh. Darry just sighed, breaking the silence. He then gave a smile, nodding his head towards the door
“Well. You wanna come inside?”
She smiled , following him up the stairs. She swore she could see the blinds flutter shut, but didn’t pay attention. Upon entering, she was hit with the smell of Cigarettes and warm food. Her mouth watered and her nose scrunched. The house was small and cozy. Warm enough to make Sammy feel as if she didn’t need her jacket.
She could feel everyone's eyes on her, shifting nervously. There were 5 people in total, making her feel a bit crowded in the small home. Two teens (close to her age) were staring at her intently.
“Samp?-”
“Sammy.”
Darry cut the younger boy off
“Her name is Sammy.”
The younger boy's eyes lit up. He got up from his spot on the floor to stand next to the girl, excitedly chatting away.
“Don’t talk her ear off Pone. She’s just met us.”
Pony chuckled sheepishly
“Sorry Soda. I’m ponyboy!”
He extended a hand, making Sammy smile
“Sammy. I’m happy to meet you all.”
All the boys whistled, some getting up to ruffle her hair or pat her back. She smiled, feeling accepted. Soda chuckled
“Alright boys, leave her alone. Poor girl needs to eat, she’s skin and bones!”
Everyone sat back down, Darry patting her shoulder. Then came the question
“So, how’s the folks you been stayin with?”
Sammy swallowed, going quiet
“Oh..Um. I dunno..”
“Whatcha mean ‘you don’t know’?”
Darrys voice sounded a little on edge
“Well, I aint really stayed with them that long. They kicked me out…Paid the court to stay quiet since they got money.”
Ponyboy scowled
“Those dirty Soc’s! Kickin you out like that..”
Sammy shrugged
“They didn’t like me wantin to be a girl n’ all. Said that if ‘I wanted to be a greaser, then I could live like one too.’ Don’t bother me much. Soc’s are all prudes anyways.”
Soda chuckled
“You’re right about that. I’m sorry that happened to ya hun. We all accept you here.”
Sammy smiled, wrapping her arms around Sodapop
“Thank you. All of you.”
She was starting to tear up
“No problem hun, The greasers are a family. No matter what you are, or want to be. We all support you.”
Everyone agreed. Darry soon brought out the food, and they all dug in.
