The Hypothesis

Chapter 7: The Label

Notes:

Sweet. It's only been like 8 months since the last update. I have no idea where those months actually went.

Also, when did ankle socks become uncool? What the hell. I feel so old.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Enid wakes up to the feeling of being adored.

At least, she thinks so… the blank, dead stare coming from those lovely brown eyes is kinda hard to read.

But if it means Wednesday’s looking at her she’ll take it as a win.

To be honest, she’d fallen asleep clinging to Wednesday like a puppy with it’s favourite chew toy. Secretly terrified that Wednesday would be gone when she woke up.

So, all things considered, she’s never been more relieved to wake up and find a psychopath looming above her. Despite the fact those dark eyes are practically drilling a hole through her head at this very moment.

They should probably talk about last night. After all, she’s not exactly sure what Wednesday thinks of all this or what ‘this’ actually is yet. All she knows is that Wednesday likes her and that she makes the cutest little sounds when she’s being kissed.

Also, Wednesday’s her mate. And Enid is madly in love and may literally die without her. But, you know, whatever. That’s totally a problem for tomorrow’s Enid. No biggie.

Because now is not the time to talk. Not while those cold, little hands are pressed against her face.

Only an absolute idiot would interrupt the unprecedented miracle that’s occurring.

And who knew cold hands could make her feel so… warm?

She yawns and gazes up with the dopiest smile she can muster, slowly blinking the sleep out of her eyes as those cold fingers continue to trace their way across rosy cheeks and soft lips.

“Whaddya thinking?” Enid mumbles against her fingers.

Wednesday continues to study her intently as she trails her fingers lightly down Enid’s face until they come to rest against her throat. She slowly strokes her finger along a vein, watching as it twitches faintly in time with the wolf’s heartbeat.

Her eyes snap back up to meet sleepy blue.

“I’m going to suffocate you.”

Enid’s eyes widen as she throws herself backwards in a mad scramble until her back hits the headboard.

“What! Why?” She whines in distress. “I thought you liked me!”

Wednesday gave her a baffled look. “I do.”

“Then… then why do you want to kill me?”

Wednesday looks even more perplexed. “I don’t.”

“Then why did you say you were going to suffocate me?!”

Wednesday tilted her head to the side in confusion.

“Is it not romantic? I reviewed your romantic guidebooks while you were sleeping and it appears to be a common theme for the subjects to kiss their partner so hard they temporarily loose the ability to breathe.”

Enid looks over to her shelf of romance novels that Wednesday is gesturing to as her face goes pink.

“You read those?” She squeaks.

Wednesday nods. “They were helpful, but I should warn you they contain numerous anatomical inaccuracies and the dialogue is at times quite crude. They also very rarely refer to the reproductive organs by their proper scientific na…”

“Oh my god! Please stop!” Enid groans as she covers her now burning red face with her hands.

When she finally peeks a look at her beloved goth she’s met with the most adorable sight. Wednesday’s head is cocked to the side with her nose scrunched up in confusion. It’s oddly reminiscent of a werewolf cub seeing its family shift from human to beast for the very first time. Which, as every wolf knows, is fucking adorable.

Enid’s jaw aches.

She could just about gobble the girl right up.

“Did I… misunderstand? About the suffocating?” The seer asks hesitantly.

Enid bashfully looks down. “Oo-oh. No. T-that’s…. that is romantic Wends. You just need to add a few extra details… so I don’t think you’re trying to kill me?”

Wednesday hummed thoughtfully, already crawling her way back over to Enid now that the girl didn’t seem to be fearing for her life.

“Very well. Enid, I am going to grab your face, kiss you repeatedly and put my tongue in your mouth until you become light headed from the lack of air. At that point, I will of course allow you a moment to breathe before resuming.”

Enid’s mouth opens and shuts a few times.

Oh.” She finally manages to breath out. “That’s, um, yeah. Ok.”

As Wednesday awkwardly climbs into her lap and loops her arms around her shoulders, Enid is pretty sure she is already light headed. In fact, she thinks she might possibly be dead and in some kind of messed up but wonderful afterlife.

Wednesday looks uncertain but extremely determined as she leans closer and presses her lips to Enid’s.

Enid can’t help but whimper as Wednesday begins to kiss her. It’s clear her precious girl has no idea what she’s doing, but it wasn’t like that mattered because it was Wednesday and Enid was going to breathless no matter what she did.

Honestly, Wednesday could beat her over the head with a stick and she’d still be into it.

So, she just hummed happily as she let Wednesday carefully explore at her own pace.

The first few moments had Wednesday nervously wriggling around just enough to drive Enid slightly feral as she bestowed the wolf with tentative touches and timid little kisses. Before long though, Enid was pleased to feel Wednesday slowly relaxing against her as the girl settled into what was proving to be a very thorough exploration. Enid was more than happy to remain mostly passive, joyfully welcoming the tongue that slowly probed for entry, but ultimately letting Wednesday lead the dance.

Although, she couldn’t quite resist sneaking her hands onto the seer’s sides, lightly tracing up and down along the seams of the soft sweater and drinking in the little gasps torn from her sweet little nightmare.

As Wednesday’s tongue thrust deeper into her mouth she tightened her hands against the smaller girl’s hips, her claws inadvertently extending as she pulled her more firmly into her lap. She cooed softly, gently raking her claws down Wednesday’s back as she felt her begin to tremble, a warm puff of air hitting her cheek as Wednesday disconnected to look at her with wide eyes, red cheeks and a desperate little whine.

She nuzzled gently against the girl’s nose. “You ok there, Wends?” She whispered.

It was amusing the way the smaller girl could’t speak, just absently flexing her hands against Enid’s shoulders as she nodded frantically as though worried Enid was going to disappear.

Speaking of…

Enid blinked a few times as a small thought niggling in the back of her mind grew stronger.

“What… time is it?” She asked Wednesday slowly.

Wednesday licked her lips in a daze before clearing her throat. “8:30.”

Enid gasped loudly. “Oh my god. Why didn’t my alarm go off?”

Wednesday gave an annoyed huff. “I took care of it. It was making unpleasant noises and it would have woken you.”

Enid groaned as she hugged Wednesday closer and dropped her forehead against her shoulder.

“That’s the whole point of an alarm Wednesday! It’s supposed to wake me up.”

She lifted her head with an exasperated sigh, unable to help herself from smiling fondly and dropping about a dozen open-mouthed kisses all over the indignant little face staring back at her.

When she was finally able to wrench herself away from inflicting what Wednesday had furiously mumbled was a ‘most heinous torture’, she turned to grab her phone, only for her jaw to slowly fall open at the sight before her.

Sure enough, there was her phone as usual, just… submerged in a glass of water.

Wednesday looked smug as she followed her gaze from where she was now resting her head against Enid’s shoulder. “It took quite some time for it to stop it’s incessant buzzing.”

“You… you drowned my phone.” She stammered weakly.

Wednesday looked over to the phone and back at Enid. “Yes. Was there a better way to stop it’s endless screaming?”

Enid stares at Wednesday.

Wednesday is sitting in her lap.

Wednesday is precious.

Well, also extremely unhinged, but still… precious.

Ok. It’s not ideal, but… she can get another phone. She can’t get another Wednesday. And she really, really wants Wednesday.

“It-it’s fine.” She manages to choke out. “But we should get ready for class.”

She tries to get up but Wednesday sits unmoving in her lap with a frown on her lovely face.

“Wednesday,” she coaxes, “I really do have to get ready for class.”

Wednesday’s scowl grows even deeper. “Why?”

“Uh, so I can learn stuff? And like, graduate high school?” She taps the side of Wednesday’s head gently, “I’m not a genius like you, you know.”

She groans with a mix of frustration and desire as Wednesday sinks further into her lap and starts kissing along her cheek.

“Not necessary.” The smaller girl states as she brushes her fingers through Enid’s tangled hair. “My family is rich. I will buy you whatever your heart desires. You will want for nothing.”

“What?! Wedne..oomph,” she’s cut off by a particularly amorous kiss from the smaller girl, her mind blanking when Wednesday’s tongue unfurls in her mouth and fingers scratch through her hair.

Oh, good god. She’s screwed. The girl learns fast.

After allowing herself approximately 3 seconds of mind-numbing bliss, she pathetically manages to push the girl back a couple of inches. “Wednesday, no. I can’t just live off your family! I have to go to school, my mom will be so pissed if I fail another class.”

Wednesday looks positively murderous as she tries push forward for another kiss but finds herself unable to budge against the hands holding her just out of reach.

“Wednesday!”

She huffs moodily, finally focussing back in on Enid’s unimpressed expression.

“Your mother is an abomination. I will have the family lawyers reach out and make her an offer for your release.” She mutters grumpily.

The hands on her shoulders tighten almost painfully. She meets Enid’s eyes and flinches at the sudden and horrifying realisation she has made some kind of error.

Wednesday.” Enid hisses, “I know you did not just suggest paying off my mother.”

Well, that was exactly what she suggested but she suspects Enid may be phrasing it rhetorically to prove a point.

Her little black heart shatters at Enid’s angry tone. “But I… I thought this was what you wanted.” She says brokenly, looking down at the bracelet adorning her wrist with a heartbroken expression. “Y-you said we were family.”

Goody said she’d alway be alone.

Enid’s eyes softened and she raised her hand to gently cup Wednesday’s cheek, trying not to swoon when the girl automatically leaned into it. “And I meant that Wednesday. But you can’t just meet a girl you like and then buy them.”

“But I didn’t just meet a girl I liked, I…” her throat went dry.

I met a girl I love.

“…I met you. I thought you wanted to get away from your mother, to… to start a new family. I have no intention of owning you, you would be free to do as you wish.”

Wednesday feels a flutter of panic forming in her chest. She’s never wanted anything as much as she wants Enid. She just doesn’t understand what exactly she needs to do or how to get there.

Her entire life she’s always, always been able to to get what she wants via money or violence or her emotionally soft father who would move heaven and earth to get his little storm cloud whatever she desired.

She doesn’t think any of these methods will work with Enid. In fact, Enid seemed to find the idea of Wednesday buying her freedom insulting.

And now, when she’s only just realised how important Enid is to her, she’s on the verge of driving the beautiful girl away. Her throat tightens as she realises everything is spiralling out of control and all because of one stupid comment.

Despite the fact she may be what some people call ‘socially inept’, she isn’t completely obtuse. She’s acutely aware - and very disturbed - that Nevermore is a veritable cesspool, filled with the hormone ravaged animals that are her fellow students. She’s observed - with much disdain - the frequent coupling and uncoupling occurring at an alarming rate. In fact, most of the romantic liaisons were over in less than 6 weeks.

But she needs forever with Enid.

She didn’t spend half the night wrapped around a sleeping werewolf while plotting their future life together for nothing.

Failure is not an option.

While Wednesday is busy having a silent existential crisis atop Enid’s lap, Enid is puzzling away in her attempts to unhook the hands that are clutching her sweater in a death grip.

She furrows her brow in frustration as she closes her fingers around a small wrist and gently tries to tug it free.

She pauses at the sound of a sharp inhale. Concern immediately floods her chest at the sight of a frozen Wednesday, her brown eyes filled with fear.

“P-please… please don’t take it back.” Wednesday voice wavers as she looks beseechingly at Enid.

Enid follows Wednesday gaze down to the hand she currently has clasped between her own. The bracelet still dangling prettily from Wednesday’s wrist.

Oh.

Her chest constricts when she realises what Wednesday’s thinking.

“Oh god, Wednesday.” She folds the smaller into her chest, hugging her tightly. “I wasn’t…I would never, never take that from you. No matter what. Even… even if you decide you don’t want to… to, um, well you know, do kissing with me.”

“It’s yours for as long as you want to keep it. We will always be family.” She finished fiercely before pressing a soft kiss against dark hair.

Wednesday pulled back slightly, looking up with a small pout. “I like the kissing.”

Enid giggled. “Yeah, I’ve been getting that vibe from you.”

She smiled wider, pressing several kisses all over Wednesday’s face. “I like the kissing too. But, you really need to unhand me so we can go to class.”

“You’re not angry with me?” Wednesday asks hesitantly.

Enid cups her face and smiles gently, as her thumbs brush along pink cheeks. “I’m not mad Wends. I know you mean well, just… please don’t interfere with my mother, all right? We can talk about it later.”

Wednesday nods, blushing furiously when Enid takes her hand and kisses it several times.

“You know, you’re so sweet when you’re worried.” Enid coos at her, still pressing little kisses against a now shaky palm.

“I’m not sweet.” Wednesday argues, trying and failing to sound incensed as her voice wobbles and her pupils dilate watching Enid’s lips pressing warmly against each of her fingers.

She never could have imagined it would be the hand kisses that do her in. She will surely die.

“Whatever you say, sweetie.” Enid says wickedly as she pushes Wednesday smoothly off her lap to land in a heap on the bed, leaving her to watch forlornly as the colourful girl skips around to get ready for the day.

Why does fucking class have to ruin everything?

Is it really so much to ask to keep Enid all to herself for the rest of eternity?

After a few minutes of frantic rushing, Enid stops in front of her, chewing her bottom lip nervously as she wrings her hands.

“I, um, I just have to brush my teeth and then I’ll be ready. Did you… did you want to go now? And I’ll follow later? It’s just, we haven’t really discussed… and, you know, then people won’t think you were with me and that that’s why we’re late…and like, there’s a page right? And I don’t know if we’re on the same one… so you can be early, and I’ll come later… and people won’t know ok?”

Wednesday cocks her head, somewhat puzzled by Enid’s suggestions.

“I can wait.” She says.

Enid nods furiously.

“Right. Yes. Like, no one will even think… I mean, we could have both overslept right? Haha… ha… cool…” She says awkwardly before scurrying off into the bathroom.

Wednesday wracks her brain trying to figure out what’s wrong with Enid. Movement out of the corner of her eye draws her attention.

Thing crawls out from under her bed, slowly stretching each finger.

“Were you hiding under there all night?” She asks suspiciously.

Thing shrugs and taps a few fingers against the floor.

Wednesday frowns. “Traumatised? I don’t know why on earth you’re feeling traumatised. I can assure you my evening was far more eventful than yours.”

She scowls when he raises his middle finger.

“Enough. Do you know why Enid is acting strange?” She snaps.

She watches intently as he begins to explain. Most of it is his usual inane babble - something about Enid’s dislike of red flags. Honestly, does Thing think she’s an idiot? Its pretty obvious to everyone - herself included - that Enid prefers multicoloured rainbow or pastel flags.

She decides to just ignore the majority of his pointless waffle but does perk up when he finally mentions something that sounds familiar.

“Thank you, Thing. You may leave.” She states dismissively.

He hesitates and taps out something very slowly.

Wednesday rolls her eyes. “Yes, of course I was listening.”

Honestly, she should have realised the issue herself. After all, Enid had talked about it incessantly during the brief period she was with the gorgon.

Enid requires a label.

She can’t even begin to remember how many times Enid had gone on and on about Ajax not ‘putting a label’ on it.

It was clearly very important to the girl.

She strokes her bracelet fondly, admiring the little wolf paw. Enid had applied a label to her almost immediately after their romantic liaison began. She feels guilty that she did not reciprocate sooner. Poor Enid, no wonder she was acting so skittish.

If a label will assure her of Wednesday’s affections, then she will not disappoint her a moment longer.

When Enid finally exits the bathroom, she finds Wednesday dressed for class, her braids perfectly re-done and holding out a black neck tie with a serious expression swimming in those dark eyes.

“Uh, hi Wednesday.” She looks from Wednesday to the tie in confusion.

Wednesday takes a deep breath.

“For you.” She says softly, placing the tie reverently in Enid’s outstretched hand.

Enid blinks a few times, before looking up at Wednesday with glassy eyes. “You want me to wear your neck tie?”

Wednesday nods.

Enid gasps in delight. “Oh em gee. That is the sweetest thing ever.”

Enid gestures to her old tie, “did you want…?”

Wednesday can barely tear her eyes from where she’s watching Enid’s lips move.

She shakes her head. “No, the colours are repulsive.”

Enid’s face drops a little and Wednesday is quick to step a little closer. “I have my memento of you right here.” She says softly, displaying her prized bracelet to the wolf.

Enid smiles shyly as she secures the tie around her neck before taking a step towards the door and silently reaching out a hand to Wednesday.

Wednesday links her hand with that of her wolf, her heart doing a series of somersaults as their fingers interlock so perfectly. Her chest swells with pride.

Would she rather be pressed into the mattress as Enid violently mauls her from above? Most certainly. But if her beloved wants to go to class then she will gladly suffer through the inconvenience.

After all, everything is ok now.

She’s successfully labelled Enid.

Step 1: Apply physical label

That's it. Proceed with caution.

Seriously, Wednesday's such a lovable idiot.
