are we too young for this?

Summary:

Antonio starts to understand the concept of death at an early age.

Work Text:

Antonio was only five. He was so confused sms didn’t really understand what was happening.

He didn’t know where his tía was. He didn’t understand what the concept of death was.

When Alma yelled at him, he didn’t understand why she yelled at him but she apologized to him after Pepa screamed at her.

He didn’t understand why Mirabel locked herself in her room and didn’t understand why she changed. He was lucky that Mirabel didn’t yell at him when he went in to see her.

He didn’t understand why and how Mirabel fainted.

He also didn’t really understand what was going on at the funeral.

“I don’t understand,” he whispered, loud enough for Pepa to hear.

Pepa was keeping him company which is what she’s been doing since everything that happened such as Alma yelling at him, Pepa getting into a fight with her, and Mirabel fainting.

“What don’t you understand, Toñito?” Pepa asked him.

“Why is no one happy anymore? Not even Mira! Why is Mira locked in her room and all the time?” he asked in return.

“Mijo, your tía Julieta died. She’s dead. That’s why everyone is sad,” Pepa told him.

Pepa didn’t want to sugarcoat it, but she was hesitant to tell him the truth. She suspected that he had too many questions so she had to be flat out honest with him because she couldn’t lie to her son. That would just make her a bad mom.

He would’ve eventually learned it when he’s older but due to everything happening recently, now would be a good idea for Antonio to learn about the concept of death and what it meant even if Pepa was dreading on telling him.

“Oh, well I was going to give her something when she gets back,” he replied.

He didn’t get it still so Pepa had to explain it again.

“Antonio, tía Julieta is not coming back,” she told him.

“Why not?” he asked again.

“Well when someone dies, they don’t come back,” she explained.

“They never come back?” he asks.

Pepa just shook her head.

Antonio was in denial with what he was learning.

“W-well she’s gonna come back,” he sniffled.

Pepa was about to cry once she heard Antonio’s sniffles. She felt bad for telling him, but she knew she had to.

“No papito, she’s not,” she told him as she picked him up and hugged him.

He then started sobbing as Pepa was comforting him. Her own tears were streaming down her face as well.

“Shhhh Toñito,” she whispered in an attempt to comfort him like she did when he was a baby.

She felt horrible for telling him the truth, she really did. On the bright side, she knew this was better than keeping him in the dark or that could result to trust issues when he’s older.

Pepa definitely didn’t went to lose her baby’s trust.
