Synthetic Blood

Summary:

After taking over her father's company, Lena Luthor spends her time trying to develop a safe man-made synthetic blood for medical science and maybe for herself and her kind too of course. You see, Lena is technically human but also technically a vampire, well more of a half-vampire that's more or less human except for her extra abilities. As she tries to develop a Blood substitute her brother Lex attempts to steer her away from the light and back down a dark path that has always beckoned her to walk down.

OR

Lena finds herself in a messy situation and a certain Kryptonian happens to call at the wrong time.

Notes:

Hey guy's! I know it's been a hot minute (*cough* months) but I wanted to post something not related to my two main stories to stretch my legs again.

So without further ado, please enjoy!

Chapter 1: A dead man has no life

Summary:

A heart to heart with mother, a long drive home, and a dead man.

Lena's night is definitely getting worse until it dies down with only one grave to dig, thankfully.

Chapter Text

Lillian took the cold metal brush handle in her hand, making it up to her hair, and started to brush through the already smooth tresses of hair on Lena's head.

"On to more pressing matters, it seems we won't be hunting for a while, seeing that the humans are now more aware of our kind since your brother started his little war with the Kryptonians." The aimless brushing continued a bit rougher than before but not painful.

"How are we to feed then mother, how are you going to feed? I am obviously already prepared but I know you prefer straight from the source." There was a slight hesitation in the last stroke of the cold brush.

Lillian set it down slowly almost methodically as she turned away and towards the moonlit window behind them.

Lena looked after the older woman cautiously.

"Mother?" Wearily she stood from the vanity mirror and closer to Lillian’s side.

She received a click of a tongue as an answer before she sighed.

"I hated how it reeked on his body, your father I mean, I hated how the smell of artificial blood was always stuck to him, it reminded me of that awful white meat substitute that some humans love in place of real meat."

"Tofu mother," Lena added helpfully as Lillian sneered further at the window and crossed her arms over her chest in defiance.

"Yes, that was it. He always smelled of his fake blood, you already adopted his tendencies to not want to drink from the source of what we need to survive, which is fine but I’ll never understand it." She turned her head to Lena almost puzzled.

“Well mother I know that this situation will be harder but I’ll try and figure something out for us. I'm sure I can maybe synthesize something more to your preferences if need be."

Lillian wasn't the warmest parent compared to most others but after Lex went on with his blood war with the aliens, she saw that Lena was more stable than she originally thought, especially compared to her son. So through great effort and shattered pride, she tried her best to bridge the gap between her and her daughter as best as she could, trying to make up for years of neglect and misplaced scorn.

With a defeated sigh Lillian finally turned to look at her youngest,

"Thank you, dear, I know you'll try no matter how many times I say I'll be fine. I just want you to use that brilliant brain of yours for more than just little old me, I'm content with the choices and endless amount of repenting I have waiting for me when it's time." Lillian never smiled at Lena, at least not often, especially as a child, but the one she gave her at that moment was the best one she'd ever seen.

“I think we all do mother. Thank you for taking care of me and letting me wait out the sun for today, I lost track of time again.” Lena lightly skims her thumb over the still healing blemish on her arm, if she were a full vampire like the rest of the Luthors in her family she would have lost it or simply turned to dust as her father did.

“Any time dear, this is still your home too, no matter what your brother claims.”

Lena almost cries, such simple words that her past self would have never dreamed of hearing from the woman before her, Lena simply nods in acknowledgment and heads back out to her car to get back to her apartment.

The drive back to National City is quiet, the long highway back lets her mind replay the hellish day she had, to say she’s dreading the minute she has to see the city's resident Super while out in the night if she ever lost her mind would be an understatement.

If she saw me, I know she'd guess what I’m capable of. Or at least that I'm definitely NOT human, I'm almost certain of it.

Lena’s thoughts turn darker as she imagines the red-caped hero’s look of repulsion and utter hate when she does truly figure out that she’s a creature of the dark, or, at least half of one.

Her mind spirals further down the dark hole of fear of what she will do with her, so much so that she had missed the new set of headlights that were quickly coming closer in the side-view mirror.

When it was close enough to slam into her back bumper she quickly snapped out of it and tried to keep her own car on the road and away from the sheer drop of the mountainside to her right.

“Fuck! Now, what's going on!?” The vehicle sways again as the car behind her crashes into hers, she took one of her more pedestrian cars today so her usual horsepower she’d use to escape is severely lacking this time as another hit on her life is in motion again this week.

So much for going incognito.

The shattering of her rear window makes her jump, the side of her car slamming right into the metal railing, seeing the lack of ground on the other side has her heart drop right into her stomach as she tries to get control again.

Big nope to that.

Another pop was registered in Lena’s brain as she finally lost control of her car, her vision spinning just as quickly as the car itself.

“Fuck fuck fuck! I swear, I'm going to stake you myself when I deal with your pets, Lex!” Sweating more than before, her panic was rising, Lena decides that trying to outspeed them won’t happen while in her brick of a ford car, she figures that she just might have to use some of her power for this one.

Her car makes a sudden stop, the front end of her vehicle had crashed through the metal railing at the edge of the road of the highway, lucky that the car was wedged into the twisted metal instead of freefalling over the cliff below.

Dizzyingly, Lena pries her hands from the steering wheel, her death grip making her bones ache as she tried for her seatbelt next. The sound of car doors slamming shut jumpstarts her heart rate again, flooding her system with more adrenaline.

The shadows in the headlights grow closer, the sound of a gun clicking, with four sets of boots crunching on gravel as they round her car on both sides.

She is actually scared now, her right shoulder twinges painfully as she tries to rip out the buckle of her seatbelt, “Ah, shit.” They had actually hit her now that she's able to look over herself, her white blouse is starting to bleed red down her arm the more she struggles on the belt.

This isn't good, the belt is too tight! F-fuck!

A balding man crouches down into her window, his eyes are glazed over, and his face is twisted into a sickening grin. “Hello halfy,” He sneers. “Your big brother wanted us to check in on you this fine night, he has been deathly worried for your health as of late.”

His gaze snaps to her bloody shoulder fixated on it for a second or so as he takes a deep breath of warm fresh blood that's bound to be permeating the air now, his dull eyes start to pool red as he takes another lung full of her bloody scent.

Lena shudders in disgust tilting her face away from his, he reeks of death and rotten flesh, ghouls were her least favorite creature that her brother had in his employ.

“Enjoying ourselves are we?” She mutters as his eyes roll open again.

He hums in delight. “I am. He did say your blood was more or less still mortal, it's almost humanly sweet.” his smile widens, some kind of old meat seemingly stuck in his teeth and gums as he appraises the state of her and her battered car. “Shame you didn't drive your nicer car, we could have stripped it for parts, but ah, oh well. We’re only here for you tonight then sadly.”

A creaking noise shook the car as he ripped her driver’s door clean off its hinges, Lena’s heightened smell was shocked by a wall of death the bald man oozed of when he leaned in to free her of her seatbelt and then abruptly dragged her out of the car by the scruff of her blouse.

Still dazed and newly freed from the metal deathtrap, Lena saw this as her last chance to try and escape from her brother’s lackeys. “I may smell human but by no means does that mean that I’m weak like one you fool.”

Latching onto the ghoul’s arm with shaking hands, Lena uses his weight to counterbalance them both into the loose dirt and flips herself over again to grab for his throat. She hates to use it but her power has to be used now before what little blood she does drink wears off from healing her wounds and leaves her completely defenseless, she’ll have to kill him quickly.

His body starts to convulse as she uses her hand to tear into his fragile throat, black rotten blood oozing over her fingers, the bones in his neck crunching as his body finally stops thrashing about under her. She’s still aware of the three heartbeats of the other goons as she finally stands up, her glowing green eyes locked onto a man with mousy brown hair, his own eyes wide and terrified. They all are.

These ones are all human, two are just boys compared to her age, and they’re all frozen stock still like rabbits encountering a starved fox.

Lena is shaking, she doesn’t kill humans, and she won’t stoop to her brother’s level. “Leave, go home, and forget about this whole night, I don't want to kill any of you. This man was not human, he likely would have eaten you all after my death so take this as an act of mercy. Please leave.”

Lena’s voice was strained but stern, she prayed they had some sense of self-preservation.

The youngest seemed to want no part so he tossed down his weapon and dragged the other two back to their vehicle, the older ones still frozen and staring at the body of the for-now-dead ghoul. “Let’s get the hell out of here guys!”

The car ripped out and back onto the highway leaving a wobbly and drained Lena in the dust, “Ugh!” She shrieks in anger as she kicks the rotten body in her rage.

Before she can take out more of her frustration on the ghoul she hears a familiar chime of her phone’s ringtone, or more specifically, Kara's ringtone. It fell out of her pocket when she was being dragged.

Groaning in pain, Lena trudged over, then that's when she remembered the plans she had for tonight.

“Shit. I forgot it's movie night, I was supposed to be at Karas tonight.” Grumbling as she wiped her bloody hand on her jeans, she bent over to pick up her cracked phone to answer her friend.

“Lena?” Lena sighed at the familiar sound of the blonde's voice, “Hi Kara, I'm sorry for not calling you back, I seem to have run into some car trouble on my way back to yours.” Glancing over to her clearly totaled car she winced at the sight of it, “Well more like it's completely totaled now.” she grumbled.

On Karas’s end of the line, she heard a crash and rushing of footsteps, “Ohmygosh! Are you okay Lena?? Where are you, I can come to get you! Or even send my “friend” to help? Please tell me you’re okay..”

The brunette felt her eyes well up with tears, she really didn't deserve this human known as Kara Danvers, she really didn't. She's so exhausted now, she just wants to relax.

“I'm off of Creek Falls and the main highway near that one cliff drop Sam always complains about, I'm no worse for wear sort of, I'm still standing on my own two feet at the moment so I’d say I'm pretty ok, for now anyway, I definitely need a hot shower and sleep after this though.” Lena tried to joke but didn't hear Kara anymore, just a rush of air against the microphone.

Confused Lena checks the line, “Kara? Are you still there?”

“Y-yeah Lena I'm still here, um, please don't be mad." Now that made Lena pause. "What? Why would I be mad at you?"

The wind in the earpiece lightened up a bit, "I'm almost there, I'm picking you up, I called Alex she'll be on her way too okay? Was there another car involved or an animal that ran across the road?" Panic gripped at Lena, Kara couldn't see this mess! Let alone the rotting ghoul body at her feet, she wouldn't understand!

"Kara, wait, it’s alright I already called the authorities and everything, it'll take a bit but I'm fine right now, also don't drive while on the phone! I don't want to be the cause of yet another accident tonight." Lena heard Kara scoff into the phone, "Thank you for the concern, but I'm definitely not driving, I don't even have a permit." She chuckled at her own expense.

Another pause.

"I'll be fine, just promise not to be mad when you see me. Yelling is fine but don't hate me, please."

Anxiety was a common thing for Lena and right now she can feel it clawing up her throat as she swallows down her guilt of having her sweet doe-eyed Kara seeing what her own monstrous hands are capable of. She slumped against her wrecked car, deigned to sit in the dirt for now.

She trusts Kara with her life, she'll have to trust her with her dark secret now. Figuring itd be best to rip off the bandaid now than later. "Only if you promise me the same, it’s a mess over here and I'm certain that it'll be horrific for you to see why."

Kara hummed in thought for a second, "Well duh, I could never hate you Lena, or any other bad emotion towards you." She said carefully like if she said it louder Lena wouldn't believe her.

"Ah wait, I think I see you? Oh." Kara whispered then the line went dead.

Lena was sitting hunched against her busted car, looking around confused at the lack of vehicle lights, Kara nowhere in sight. Letting out a ragged breath Lena let her head fall back with her eyes closed, praying that Kara would listen to her explain the scene before her. Maybe she won't be too repulsed.

The brunette’s eyes snapped open when she felt a warm hand on her good shoulder, to say she almost shit a brick would be putting it very lightly because right before her was Supergirl, but in Kara Danvers' sweats, T-shirt, and a very red cape with no socks or shoes to top it all off.

Yeah, being shocked at the vision before her would be a very light word for how Lena is struggling to process at that moment.

Super- uh, Kara is pretty much herself while she looks Lena over, making soft cooing noises as she checks over each scrape and bruise, she all but balls her eyes out when she shifts Lena's shirt to check the gunshot wound.

"Lena, Rao, I should have listened further out for you, I try not to listen too often to not be too paranoid but Lex sends a lot of people after you, and if I was listening farther tonight I could have stopped this." She blubbered, while Lena was rubbing a soothing hand across Karas's back, still a bit slow to process her words but she quickly bounced back and stupidly asked, “Kara? You’re not human?”

Kara stilled her hands, “no. I'm sorry I kept it from you ‘till now, I just could never find the right moment to tell you. I was going to try again tonight if that’s worth anything.”

Kara did look nervous, wary that Lena was angry about her lying for so long, but instead of being angry Lena just full-body laughed about this situation they found themselves in.

As light tears started to form in Lena's eyes, Kara nervously held the brunette's hand as she was sitting on the balls of her feet hunched over by Lena. "Lena? I don't know if laughing should make me feel nervous or happy right now."

Lena chuckled a couple more times and pulled the blonde into a relieved hug. "I've been an idiot, I've been trying to bring up the fact that I'm not human either for the past year Kara, so right now I think it's a bit ridiculous that you've been worrying about the same thing." Lena didn't miss the full-body twitch Kara had after hearing her say this, she understood, that Lena was technically human but only partially. It was briefly a one-sided embrace until Kara hugged her back with almost all her strength, leaving Lena only mildly squished but overall content by the pressure, minus her wounded arm.

Their little bubble was immediately burst when a black SUV pulled up to blind the two of them, a bedraggled Alex dressed in her pajamas, sporting a large jacket, and combat boots holding what looked like a shovel, "Kara! Tell me why you texted me 911! Then, please bring a shovel with a pinned location at midnight?? Like, this place is creepy as fu-" Alex immediately stopped, with wide eyes, and spotted the now twitching body off to the side. "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT??"

Alex is away from her car and right by Kara and Lena's side almost instantly when the once dead ghoul flips onto its side, slowly dragging itself over to Lena while grossly gurgling black blood from the hole in its neck and mouth as it crawls over to the trio.

"That would be what's left of my brother's newest hitman he sent to check in on me. He's a ghoul so I probably should have made sure to take the whole head off instead of ripping his throat out." Lena extracts herself from an equally shocked Kara and tugs the shovel out of Alex's limp fingers, "Please pardon me, I'll give it right back."

Alex looks at her dumbfounded, Lena shrugs as she turns back to the ghoul clearly annoyed beyond belief. "I would say have a nice trip given that you're going straight to hell but I really don't appreciate what you did to my car, " she glances over at the once-upon-a-time pristine white paint job her car had and cringes at the many bullet holes and scratches.

"Actually. I think I'm more pissed off that I had to meet you at all, so, bye now."

She raised the shovel as high as she could with her good arm and swung down with all of her might, the ghoul let out one last hiss as the head fell from his body. Twin gasps and a single gag were heard after she blindly handed the shovel back to the older Danvers.

Exhausted, Lena looks back at the gawking Danvers sisters, "Help me clean this up and I'll get you both whatever food you want to eat for a month, no wait. A year?" She was almost certain Alex was going to shoot her, given the incredulous look she was giving her up until that offer was out of Lena's mouth, but both sisters still scurried over to help.

"You're also going to fill us in about whatever the hell that thing was, what's going on, and how the fuck he was working for your brother," Alex demanded as she waved her hand in Lena's direction in an almost protective voice.

"And about the not-human thing," Kara mumbled as she grabbed the legs of the creature and dragged it past Lena over to the deepening hole Alex was currently starting to dig

With a sigh of relief, Lena nodded, vowing to answer whatever her two friends asked her.

Moving to help the two she breathed out in relief,

"deal."

Chapter 2: The wicked cannot rest

Summary:

Lena explains her situation

Notes:

I love mixing and matching different things regarding supernatural creatures and the like to make things more interesting, so don't take it too seriously when it comes to how they'll be characterized in my writing :p because there will be some goofy mashups somewhere in here down the line

Chapter Text

"Okay! Spill it Luthor, what's with the ghoul or whatever he is, or was?" Alex gestured her grease-covered chopsticks towards Lena.

Alex and Kara were dressed differently. The pair they had on earlier, have long been changed out for some new ones, their old ones burned to ashes by Kara's laser vision after they dealt with the body. No evidence and all.

Lena found herself borrowing a set from Kara since her clothes also had to be burned given she was previously covered in the things blood and all stages of rot and grime from the whole ordeal.

Pulling out her marked take-out box from their big bag of food, Lena took the cup of her newest batch of homemade synthetic blood and took a long pull from her straw in hopes that it would give her a much-needed boost to her healing factor.

"Yes, he was a ghoul, Alex. Their kind live off of the flesh of humans and maybe some aliens if they're desperate enough but I don't think they'd be that stupid to try to feed off of them. Some alien flesh tends to outright kill most ghouls that even try as far as I've heard."

Spearing a broccoli from her plate Lena looked up at the sisters cautiously.

"Have neither of you heard of them existing before now? Because, I mean I figured that given you're both a part of the D.E.O. you'd have at least heard something…"

Kara was wide-eyed and tried to chew her food faster to reply while Alex nearly choked on her beer, Lena continued quickly to explain.

"Now don't deny it. I've known that much over the years just by chance and from my brother's notes, I'd have figured that your knowledge isn't strictly alien-based. At least I hope so for the sake of not explaining everything."

Both sisters sat frozen, "W-well, we've dealt with a 5th-dimensional imp called Mxy? He's technically not an alien. What he does is more or less magic I think." Kara scratched her chin awkwardly.

"We'll circle back to 5th dimension imps later. As for the man tonight, what he and many others have unfortunately been turned into are called ghouls, they're like most humans but they consistently smell of death and rot, and they eat flesh. Oh, they're also unnaturally strong so to kill one you'd need to remove the head or just burn them.” Kara twitched at that information, Lena knew Kara and Clark don't kill anyone let alone burn unnatural creatures to make sure they stay dead.

Lena continued on.

“But unlike other supernatural beings, they can be in the sunlight, but they still prefer the night."

She picked up her tray of her beef and broccoli while both of the sisters sat there, staring in shock and slight horror.

"Okay… so second question. You said you weren't mad at me for not telling you I'm not human because you're not either? Did I hear that wrong, or?"

Lena for once in her life (in a long while) felt her confidence falter just a bit.

"Yes, sort of. I'm still technically part human, I was born from a human mother but had a, let's say, supernatural being for a father."

Kara set her long empty box of food down and gave Lena her full attention. "I'll listen to whatever you feel comfortable answering, I'll tell you whatever you want to know about me in return of course. Well. If you want to know."

Lena smiled back and nodded, Let's get this over with then.

"I'm a half-vampire, dhampir is the term for it in most folklore and some entertainment media, I suppose. I'm still technically alive and can still function in the sun as much as I want to even if I do prefer to stay indoors as much as possible. Since I sunburn easily thanks to my skin complexion not because of what I am.”

At this information Kara was practically at the edge of her seat now, eyes wide in surprise but no less affectionate. Alex, was passive in her facial reactions but he once bouncing leg was now more still than it had been since they sat down.

Lena took all this as an alright sign, so she continued.

“My father, Lionel, was a vampire. My mother and Lex were also born as such. They are what most in our circle call old bloods. Given that they're pure and of course older compared to most everything else and they have a longer history than most undead families."

Alex's face finally cracked when she snickered.

"Damn, then I bet Betty White is one of the old bloods given that she's older than sliced bread itself."

Kara smacked her arm out of shock, "Alex! She died this year! Have some respect for our golden girl Ms White."

As Alex mumbled her apologies Lena cut back in with a smile.

"Actually, she does that every other century, I don't quite remember how she goes about it but she more or less resets her age after she sleeps a century or so and starts a whole new identity, and for some reason this life was the most popular one she's led yet, at least last I remember her telling me when I first met her."

Kara was in the process of taking a sip and promptly choked on her drink, almost spitting it into her sister's face as she sputtered at Lena. "SHE WHAT."

Lena shrugged and continued past that topic, she'll tell Kara about it later.

"Anyway, my birth mother was human so I came out as half, so I do not need blood to stay alive or sane but I do need it if I want to benefit from the abilities I’d be granted, to be as strong as a full-blooded Vampire, as fast as one, and help me heal faster and just gives me an overall boost. Kind of like having coffee in the morning to help wake someone up but it's a part of you always but just dormant.”

Alex finished chewing her food and asked the next question.

“So what you're saying is that you are a superhuman. Wait, so is that why you've been working on a blood substitute for all of these years? To like, power up without having to find a human or animal donor?”

Lena knew Alex by now, she knew she was a doctor and would ask about her project sooner or later.

She smiled nervously as she took a quick sip of her bourbon, “Well yes and no. To be honest it's more for other supernaturals that refuse to use humans as blood sources. My mother, for example, saw how Lex turned out when he lost his sources while trying to fight Clark and did not want to go into a frenzy while doing so. But then he more or less drank from anyone and everyone he could just to get strong enough to beat Clark. He was very pissed off that he was weaker than a Kryptonian.” She shrugged again and took another sip as the sisters processed.

Kara laughed nervously, “Clark huh, wow uh I mean-”

“Kara, you're literally cousins in both versions of yourself, don't stress about it, Lena can clearly put two and two together.”

“Thank you, Alex, and to be fair I knew who he was since he first came out as Superman, he and my brother were practically joined at the hip before their fallout. My brother was too arrogant to see past the naivety that Clark used as a front” Lena put her takeout on the table and pulled her legs up onto the couch as she continued.

“Back to the blood though, it's not just for the sake of the supernaturals. I wanted to make something that would benefit both sides. In case of blood shortages or having a clean and unmarred source for those who are immune compromised. I'll make sure it won't cost much to produce either if I do it correctly. I want there to be an alternative option for all of us. There's just so much I could do to help with this project of mine, it's important for both sides that this project is successful.”

When Lena looked up from her hands she saw that both sisters had their whole attention on her, stunned.

“That's so cool! Lena, you're a genius so I know it'll work, how much progress have you made so far?” Kara left her spot next to Alex and dropped down on the cushion next to Lena, eyes bright and curious.

“W-well I've made it to the stage of it being able to be consumed by Vampires. For one it's not very filling, the taste is little to be desired, and it only gives a slight boost to energy and other important abilities we have but still only slightly. I've been testing it on myself for years at this point and it's only improved slightly since then, so even if we can technically ingest it it's still nowhere suitable for long-term consumption let alone humans to use.”

Lena flicked her eyes over the two as she solemnly picked at her fingers, “Humans are so very fragile, if something foreign enters their bodies that their systems don't recognize it'll reject it and defend itself, if I get anything wrong people could be poisoned, someone could die. There's just so many things that I don't want to happen in the process that could go wrong if I mess it up.”

Alex nodded in understanding, “That's smart and you're not wrong that this can help, but it can also be dangerous to you too no, not just humans? Lena, you are half human too so that of course means you're not completely invulnerable, right?”

Lena shook her head at that, “No I'm pretty much average in that respect, I do age slower than a normal full human but I can still die to anything just like you, diseases not so much luckily but a bullet and other means would do the trick as if I were just human, it would just take a bit longer, especially if I drink blood and were in the middle of healing.”

Lena took a sip of her wine again, taking care to seem nonchalant still while Alex nodded and tried to process and Kara stared at Lena in amazement.

True to Kara's character, she wrapped Lena in a hug, one of her signature soft warm ones. “You're so amazing Lena. Thank you for telling us about all of this, about yourself. I'm sorry I didn't share anything with you when I first felt I was ready too, I'll make it up to you however I can.”

Lena smiled and let her shoulders relax, letting the tension ease from them. Kara, true to her character was a hugger and whenever Lena was on the receiving end of one she would alway melt like butter within her embrace as Kara took extra care with her, almost as if she were made of porcelain and needed the extra care of being handled.

It always surprises her at how quickly she lets herself relax with Kara and her constant shows of physical affections, of course she damn well knows why she even allows it but that's a box she's not yet ready to dig through.

Breathing deep, Lena squeezed Kara back in thanks, “darling I was in the same position of not sharing with you so think nothing of it. I knew about your cousin years ago so it didn't take much to figure you out after our first introduction. I'm not upset whatsoever.”

Lena had always felt guilty that she had known their whole friendship who Kara really was, if felt like she cheated and lied about how much she really knew by playing dumb and even covering for Kara when she was unaware that she was letting her powers slip up in the company of others.

But finally she feels free.

Kara let go and relaxed back into the couch cushions with a content and tired sigh. Her smile is still visible.

Alex relayed her own feelings with Lena and vice versa, no hard feelings all around concerning past altercations or accusations between the two women, knowing that there were no hard feelings and new aspects to their perspectives to add onto.

Alex asked Lena, her voice tentative, “Would it be alright if I brief the DEO on all of this new information regarding supernaturals? Whatever you feel comfortable answering to fill in any gaps I'd have would be very helpful too.”

“Yes I'm fine with filling the gaps, it would benefit everyone to know what and who is out there, I'd rather you two and the rest of the city to be better prepared for Lex and his league of freaks.” Kara gave her a funny look at the use of the word “freak”, Lena shook her head sadly.

“I apologize, I know that it sounds harsh but with how my brother has altered and deformed them from their previous states, they are no more than walking Frankensteins with little intelligence. My brother has turned into a butcher of our kind. Even our mother is horrified by what he's done to these people.”

Both Danvers grimly nodded their heads in understanding, they knew what the Lex who presented himself as human was capable of, they could only guess from what little Lena had already shared, how a vampire Lex was able to accomplish behind their backs.

Alex raked her hand over her face and into her hair, her last reserves of energy finally waning as she let out a deep yawn. “Okay, we'll pick this up later. I'm gonna go home now, I'd rather sleep in my own bed after all of this excitement.” She let out a tired laugh as she gave the other two a hug bye.

“Text me when you're home please!” Kara piped up as Alex zipped up her jacket and grabbed her keys. “Kara you can literally hear from far away to check I'm home safely.”

“But that's cheating Alex! I'd know you're there but you wouldn't know for sure I knew you were!” Kara blushed when both Alex and Lena quirked a brow at that logic.

“Fine whatever, if I remember to, I will, so goodnight you two. See you tomorrow.”

Lena was about to start gathering her things as well, but stopped short when Kara offered to let Lena stay there.

“No I couldn't impose-”

“Lena it's no problem, besides, half-human or no I'd feel better knowing you're close by me in case Lex sends more trouble your way. Besides, you've stayed over here before!” Lena joined in the silliness of Kara's amusement at that last part. “Since I am tired and am now just realizing I'd be waking up my driver at this hellish hour just for a ride home I guess I will stay then.”

Kara bounced up and off the couch, gently taking Lena's hand and guiding them to go get ready for sleep. Lena laughed at the action and felt fuzzy at the sight that Kara indeed kept Lena's toothbrush that she left here from last time.

After cleaning up, Kara had already settled onto one of the sides of the bed and replied to her sister when she texted that she was home now. While Lena finished with her own nightly routine, she eventually took the empty side of the blonde's bed, the soft blankets a welcome comfort after her ridiculous day.

“Goodnight Lena, sleep well.” Kara too had a long day so Lena wasn't all too surprised that the Kryptonian was already dozing off. It made Lena smile stupidly when Kara shuffled cutely to get more comfortable.

“Goodnight Kara.” Lena couldn't even stop herself from moving the section of Kara's hair that fell past her now sleeping face, careful not to wake her again.

For the headache it all was, she's glad that she had Kara in her life, Alex too of course but she knew that she wouldn't have been so calm if the sisters weren't there to lend their aid to help her.

She was grateful.

While the girls rested that night.
Off in the other half of the city, Lex started his new plan into motion.
