Chapter Text
He felt his hands begin to numb, the cold steel of chains cutting off his circulation. His mouth was dry, the bitter taste of the cold air lingering within. He shivered against the stone wall of the dungeon, cursing the goddess's name under his breath. He attempted to shift his position, wincing as his body ached. He could feel the cuts and bruises pulsing, burning like fire against his skin.
It was supposed to be so easy. Sneak in undetected, hide within Prime Minister Aegir's chambers and wait for the perfect moment strike once the noble returned. How could it have gone so horribly wrong?
He wasn't given anymore time to ponder his failures, as the sound of boots stomping and heels clicking in the distance caught his attention.. He kept his eyes low to ground as the footsteps grew closer and closer. He knew they were here for him. He was the only one this far back within the dungeon. He knew what fate awaited the moment he was captured. The footsteps final stopped, right in front of his cell. He didn't make a move, keeping his gaze to the ground he was sitting on.
"Be honored, you traitorous worm. Her ladyship has graced you with her presence", the guard spat down at him. Still, the prisoner kept his gaze to the rough stone ground. "What, were you hit too hard on the head? Show some damn respect you dastard before I come in there an-".
A woman's voice cut the guard off, "Open the cell, I'd like to speak to him. Alone".
"B-But, this is a deadly criminal! An assassin! If not for our informant he would've killed Minister Aegir!", the guard explained while fumbling with his keys.
"Is that so? All I see here is battered and beaten boy, he will be no threat to me", she turned her attention to the prisoner, "Will behave won't you?"
He said nothing, not even giving her a head nod. The guard gulped before finally opening the cell door. The sound of heels approached closer to the prisoner. "M-my lady please at least allow me to-", the guard pleaded only to be cut off once again.
"Thank you for your services. You are dismissed", she said coldly.
The guard simply bowed before quickly making his way out. The woman stepped closer, squatting down in front of her prisoner. Her gloved hand gasped his chin as she gently tilted it up to look her in the eye. If it wasn't for his current condition, he would've lost his breath looking at this woman. Snow white hair gently fell on her pale face with piercing violet eyes that stared into his own. She was breathtaking, but he wouldn't visibly express it. He would not show any weakness. She looked over his face as he stared back to her, "So you're this deadly assassin I've heard so much about, hmm?"
He said nothing, jerking his head away from her grasp, but still he continued to glare at her.
"And clearly not a friendly one are you", she smirked as she reached behind her. She revealed a small canteen of water. "You're thirsty aren't you? Drink"
She put the canteen to his mouth, tilting it towards. The water slowly rushed to his lips, which parted the moment they felt the cool rush of water. He slowly gulped down of drip of the canteen, feeling life return to the desert that was his mouth.
"Feel any better?", the women asked as she stood back up. Still there was no response. She continued, "They've decided your sentence you know? You are to be executed by the morning. Not surprising given your crimes, but I must say... It will be a shame to lose someone with your set of skills".
"What do you want?", he finally mumbled out with his weakened voice.
"Oh! So he does speak!", she faked her shock before releasing a small giggle, "Well, why don't we just cut straight to the case. I am need of someone like you for my cause. Someone with your capabilities".
"Just get one of your lackeys to do your dirty work for you, your ladyship", he spat out as his gaze returned to the floor.
"You make a good point, however, those men are loyal to the kingdom. Loyal to my father. Loyal to this established hierarchy and it's nobles. They can not be trusted to do what I need done", she squatted down infant of him and once again gasped his chin with her hand, turning his gaze back to her, "You have no one left to turn to. Your comrades have all but abandoned you, haven't they? But I have not. Swear to me. Swear your loyalty to me and me alone. Swear to put my life and cause above all others. Do so and I will save your life."
"And how do I know you aren't just toying with me?", he growled back.
"You do not. But what other choice do you have?", she smirked.
He stared into her eyes for a moment, trying to detect any weakness or a sign that she was not to be trusted. Instead, all he saw was a fiery passion within those violet orbs of hers. He saw a determination that would not rest until her plans were seen through to the end. How could he possibly say no to that?
"Fine... You got yourself a deal", he grumbled, never breaking his gaze.
"Swear it", she commanded.
There was a momentary pause, one last act of resistance before finally he said, "I swear on my name, that my life is yours and yours alone. My only purpose from on is to as you wish, my Lady Edelgard".
.....
(Several Months Later)
The sound of wood clanking together echoed in the training hall of Garreg Mach, as (y/n) clashed training swords with Catherine, one of the greatest knights of Seiros. She pushed him back with ease, causing the young man to stumble backwards. Wasting no time, the knight rushed in, slamming her sword down on him. He barely managed to react in time, blocking the hit from above. She swung again, aiming for his chest this time. As his sword clashed with hers once again, the wooden shaft snapped off entirely, allowing Catherine's blade to slam into the students chest. (y/n) went tumbling to the ground, groaning as his chest flared in pain.
"You lasted longer this time, impressive", Cathrine remarked as she approached her fallen sparing partner, "Keep this up and maybe in a few years, you'll be able to go toe to toe with me".
She reached her hand down to help him up, however (y/n) ignored it, pulling himself up off the ground, "Thank you for the compliment and the training opportunity Lady Catherine".
"Don't sweat it kid, but maybe you should take it a bit easy on the training? Not gonna be much help to the Black Eagles if you're too tired to fight", she said with a worried look.
"I appreciate the concern ma'am but rest is not luxury I can afford", he explained.
Catherine shook her head as she watched (y/n) gather the broken pieces his sword, "You know how many times I've heard that from a cocky knight right before they die on the battlefield, kid?"
"I do not make these claims out of arrogance, Lady Catherine. I say it do to an oath I made. Nothing more, nothing less", (y/n) explained as he finished gathering the splintered pieces of sword, "Now if you will excuse me, I believe Edelgard has returned from her mission with the other house leaders"
He bowed to the knight of Seiros as he made his exit from the training grounds. (y/n) could hear Catherine mumble to herself, "That Imperial princess really has him wrapped around her finger, huh?"
"You have no idea", the student thought to himself.
It had been several months since Edelgard von Hresvelg, princess of the Empire, had saved (y/n) from being executed for the attempted assassination of Prime Minister Aegir. In exchange he swore his loyalty to her, working under her orders and hers alone. As much as he hated to admit it, the princess had taken rather good care of the former assassin. She gave him residence within the palace, fresh clothes and food until the time came for him to enroll in the Officers Academy. Enrollment in the academy is a privilege within all of Fodlen, a privilege that the Empire typically reserved for it's nobles. A street rat like (y/n) would never dare dream of being enrolled within the monastery. However, Edelgard needed (y/n) to strengthen his skills if he was to help carry out her goals. It was for that reasoned that Edelgard sponsored him, making him only the second commoner within the Black Eagles, third if you counted a Brigid princess. While many of the others were able to enjoy their days at the academy, forming bonds and relationships that they hoped would last, (y/n) spent as much time as possible training his blade and bow. Edelgard needed him to become a master assassin, that was the only reason she enrolled him at the Officers Academy and he had no intention of letting her down, no matter how much he may resent her. He sore an oath to her after all.
(y/n) entered the Black Eagles class to see everyone was in attendance and standing their house leader, who had just returned from a training mission with the other leaders. Edelgard back was turned to him, as she was busy addressing the others. (y/n) had hoped he would be able to go unnoticed the while time, but a certain brunette songstress thought otherwise. "Well look who finally decided to show up", Dorothea tease as she stared right at (y/n), "And here I thought you weren't gonna welcome back Edie". (y/n) attempted to glare daggers at the opera singer, but she remained unfazed, striking make a cute smirk, fully aware of what she's done.
"Ah, (y/n)", Edelgard said as she turned to face her assassin, "I wondering where you were". She looked at him with that same fake smile she had always wore when in the presence of the other nobles. (y/n) had never seen a genuine smile from Edelgard, only the fake one she wore to win the hearts of those around her and the smirk she wore when in a position of power. He had the smirk ingrained his mind from when they first met within that Imperial dungeon. A reminder to never fall under the sway of her fake smile. As he knew, (y/n) was the only one who could see through this facade of hers.
"Edie... Don't pretend you actually know her. If you knew the plans she had for this country you would think twice about acting all buddy buddy with her.
"Lady Edelgard, I see you have returned safely", (y/n) addressed his sponsor, the glare on his face never leaving.
"And I see you do not seem so pleased about that", Edelgard said as she placed a hand on her hip.
(y/n) shook his head, "Of course I am. In fact, I was just about to say a thankful prayer to the goddess for protecting you". His voice reeked with sarcasm as he rolled his eyes.
Hubert, a dark mage in training and Edelgard's bodyguard, stepped towards (y/n), "I suggest you rethink the why you dress our lady, sir. Someone in your position should learn to show some respect". The murderous intent in Hubert's voice was not lost to the former street rat, he had grown accustomed to hearing it from his time living on the streets.
"Respect has to be earned, not given", was all (y/n) had to say as he took a seat in the classroom.
"Why you-", Hubert began but was quickly stopped as Edelgard raised her arm infront of him.
"Enough Hubert", she commanded, "(y/n) is absolutely right. He feels that I have not earned his respect, then I will see to it I prove myself to him". She looked at him, the boy she saved from the dungeons that was in her servitude and gave him a small smile. By all accounts, she should've been furious with him and his constant disrespect. Any other noble would've had his head for speaking like that, yet she was patient, even given the circumstances of their relationship. Perhaps she was kinder than he believed, or perhaps she was content with the knowledge that he would follow her every command no matter. Either way, (y/n) was not oblivious to her gentle approach towards him.
Dorothea spoke up again, trying to cut the tension, "Oh don't worry Edie, (y/n)'s just playing hard to get is all. I bet deep down he's got a huuuuuge crush on you and just don't know what do with it". Dorothea winked at him, clearly trying to press his buttons. (y/n) just scoffed, not giving her the attention she clearly desired.
"Please Dorothea, enough of your teasing", Edelgard laughed softly, a light blush tickling her face.
Her acting keeps getting better and better
"We have more pressing issues to address", the house leader continued, "I believe our new professor will be arriving here shortly. If what I believe is correct, it will be the same mercenary that saved my life the other day".
......
(y/n) stood in the courtyard, leaning against one of the pillars as he stared at the night sky, watching the stars dance between each other.
"I am sorry for keeping you waiting", Edelgard said as she approached the man, "I had to wait for Hubert to go to sleep before I could sneak out undetected"
"It's fine, I couldn't sleep anyway", (y/n) groaned as he turned to face the princess. This type of meeting was usual for the two of them. While both he and Hubert were under her service, Edelgard saw to it that she addressed the two of them separately, not wanting them each to know more than she thought they should.
"Tell me, what do you think of our new professor?", Edelgard asked as she took her place on the pillar beside the one (y/n) leaned on.
"Professor Byleth? Her reputation as a mercenary proceeds her. Even the Empire's underground know of the Ashen Demon", he stopped to think for a moment, "....I can't tell what she is thinking though. Her eyes tell no story, no weakness. Nothing at all".
Edelgard pondered what he just said before saying, "I see, so our thoughts are aligned. I too cannot seem to read our teacher. However, I do know she is a powerful fighter, especially with her blade. You could learn quite a bit from her".
"is that what you called me out here for? To tell me to train with Byleth?", (y/n) groaned, "I don't see the need to be so secretive about this".
"That is not all", Edelgard said, finally turning to look at him. Her face held that same determination as when they first met. "I will be suggesting to the professor that you be one of the students involved in the mock battle this month". (y/n) raised an eyebrow, clearly asking for more information. "This will be the perfect test of your skills. I need to know that, should the moment arise, you can handle yourself in battle against the other houses. Especially against Dimitri and Claude".
"I'm sure I can take care of the royal brute and that Alliance archer with no trouble at all", (y/n) tried to explain.
"But I need you to prove it to me", Edelgard took a step closer to him, "I need to know I picked the right man to support my cause. And besides, asserting our strength in front of Byleth and the other houses will surely draw many to our side. We will need all the allies we can muster when the time comes".
"When the time comes for you to take over Fodlen you mean?", (y/n) sneers.
"When the time comes for us to change the status quo of this land. To free the people from those that would keep them bound", Edelgard said as the fire in her eyes burned brighter and brighter, "You swore you would support my cause, but I need to see if your actions can back your words".
To free the people, huh? When she saids it like that..."
(y/n) sighed as he turned to face the princess, "Fine, I'll prepare for combat against the house leaders. You'll see you didn't make a mistake choosing me".
A smile tickled Edelgard's lips upon hearing that, "Thank you, your words fill me with confidence. I look forward to seeing the results of all your hard work, all of which, I assure you, does not go unnoticed sir".
That smile was different from the ones (y/n) had seen thus far. It wasn't too sway him to her side, as she knew he already was. It wasn't to assert her dominance over him, as she already had long ago. This smile seemed to be a genuine reaction from the princess. A genuine sign of gratitude for his service to her. He would never show it, but (y/n) could feel his heartbeat quicken for just a moment upon seeing this.
"Of course, my lady. However, if you do not have anything else to say, I suggest we return to our dorms. The last thing we went is to be found out hear after curfew", (y/n) explained, trying to ignore the beating in his chest.
"You are quite right, sir", Edelgard stopped for a moment and looked up, "...The sky is beautiful tonight is it not?"
(y/n) followed her gaze upwards, "Yeah... It is".
"Those stars, so free, are what I envision Fodlen's future to be", Edelgard sighed as she smiled towards the sky, "The people will be free as the stars in the night sky".
......
"That's more than enough for today", Byleth said as she lowered her training blade.
"W-What?", (y/n) panted as sweat dripped from his face, "No I can... I can still keep going".
Byleth shook her head as she stepped close to her student, "You are clearly exhausted, (y/n). I understand the desire to grow but that will be useless if you are too tired to fight"
(y/n) grip on his sword tightened, "You did not even break a sweat this whole time. How pathetic..."
Byleth placed a hand in his shoulder, causing her student to look up at her, "No, you are merely just beginning. You skilled with a sword, that is plan to see. However, your mind is too raw and unfocused tp put that talent to use. Rest body and train your mind instead. That will be needed if you are to succeed in the mock battle this month".
(y/n) looked up at her, "What was that about the mock battle?"
Byleth smiled softly as she collected his training weapon, "Lady Edelgard insisted that you fight alongside us at the end of the month. She went as far to say that we would surely lose if you were not out there with us. It seems you have made quite the impression on her".
"She over exaggerates, but none the less I am thankful for the opportunity Professor", (y/n) bowed his head, "I will not let you down".
A small laugh escaped Byleth's lips, "I am sure you won't. But why don't we head to the mess hall? I'd say we have earned a good meal after all our hard work today".
Her student nodded as the two left for the dining hall. (y/n) had trained and fought against some skillful bandits and assassins in his time in the Empire's underground, but none could have prepared him for training along side the Ashen Demon. Byleth's strength and speed were out of this world. She was going easy on (y/n) but he was still struggling to keep up with the blue haired swordsman. From just one glance at his stance, Byleth knew all of her students weakness and used each and every one to disable him. And it felt like she always knew what he was next move was going to be before he even took a step or swung his blade. If he could become even half as good as Byleth, then (y/n) was confident he would be able to handle the other houses whenever the time came for that.
As the two walked side by side, the beautiful and familiar sound of singing filled the air. Sitting in the courtyard, outside of the classrooms, was Dorothea. She had her eyes closed as she sung the her heart out, not caring who many people looked her way. While (y/n) did not get along with the songstress, he would be lying if he said he didn't occasionally stop what he was doing to listen to her sing from time to time. Byleth seemed equally interested as she approached the other student. Dorothea sensed her presence and opened her eyes, "Oh, Professor Byleth", her attention then turned towards (y/n), "And (y/n)! Did you two just finish up your training for the day?"
Byleth nodded, "Yes, we were just heading for the dining hall. Would you care to join us?"
.....
"Tell me, Dorothea", Byleth asked as she ate with her two students, "Do you have any interest in participating in the mock battle? So far Edelgard and (y/n) are the only ones I have chosen for the battle".
Dorothea was seemingly caught off guard by this question, nearly choking on her salad, "O-Oh well truthfully I am not the greatest fighter in the world". Her gaze then turned towards (y/n), who was eating his meal next to her. She looked him up and down before leaning her head on her arm, "However if (y/n) was there to protect me then I suppose it wouldn't be too bad~"
"Hmph, if you are going to be a part of the Black Eagles you will have to learn protect yourself", (y/n) kept his composure even as he felt Dorothea undress him with her eyes.
"Oh you're no fun", Dorothea huffed, "I bet if I was Edie you would just leap at the opportunity to protect me".
(y/n) sighed, "Enough with this nonsense. If you participate in the mock battle then I will watch out for you just as I will for Edelgard and the others. Is that enough for you?"
"Awwwww so you do plan to protect her after all, huh? Oh I knew you were pinning for her deep down!', Dorothea squalled.
"I am doing no such thing! I am simply acting as a good classmate would. Nothing more, nothing less", he tried to explain, quickly growing exhausted with the conversation.
"Oh so what I'm hearing is, you're available~"
"Professor, please make her stop", (y/n) pleaded only to find his professor quietly laughing at the hijinks.
"My apologies, I can just tell that the two of you are good friends", Byleth said with a small smile on her.
"Oh he loves me, really. Don't let that scowl on his face tell you otherwise", Dorothea chimed as she continued to stare at her classmate, "He just likes to play hard to get is all."
"Love you? I barely even know you", (y/n) corrected her, with that scowl on his face.
"Well why don't we fix that? Let's say a romantic dinner for two this weekend? Your treat?", Dorothea winked at him.
"In your dreams", he growled back.
Byleth interrupted the conversation by saying, "Anyway, Dorothea I'll take that as a yes to you participating. I still need to find a fourth student. Edelgar had suggested Ferdinand as a contender".
(y/n)'a whole body winced at the mentioning of the noble, "I would suggest against that. Ferdinand and I... We do not work very well together".
"And why is that?", Byleth asked, noticing Dorothea's downcast look from across the table.
"...Personal matters", (y/n) said as he stood from his chair, "Thank you for the lunch and training Professor, but I am afraid I'm suddenly feeling very tired. If you'll excuse me".
"(y/n)...", Dorothea sighed as he walked away from the table, knowing well the reason the two didn't get along. For how could Ferdinand possibly get along with the man who tried to murder his father?
.....
(End of the Month)
The Black Eagle classroom was a buzz as the final preparations were being made before the mock battle would begin in a just a few hours. Petra was running Dorothea through the basic sword techniques, as the songstress was still new to combat unlike the Brigid princess. Edelgard was checking over her inventory with Hubert one last time, making sure the dark mage hadn't snuck in any items that would give the future Emperor an unfair advantage in battle. Byleth has dealing with Casper, who was once again pleading with her to allow him to participate in the mock battle, while the teacher was attempting to locate both Linhardt and Bernadette. And (y/n) was attempting the check the durability of his training sword while ignoring the glare being casted to him by the fourth student participating in the mock battle.
"I still do not understand what the Professor and Edelgard were thinking. Allowing a criminal such as you to fight amongst the nobility of Fodlen", Ferdinand complained as he stood infant of (y/n).
"If you have an issue with it, then complain to them about it. I just do what I am told. Nothing more, nothing less", (y/n) explained, trying to keep his cue. Ferdinand had been voicing his frustration over (y/n)'s inclusion for quite some time. Even before Byleth arrived at Garrag Mach, Ferdinand had been trying to convince the monastery to expel the commoner due to the crimes he attempted against the Prime Minister of the Empire, Ferdinand's father. Lady Rhea seemed to disagree with Ferdinand's line of reasoning, believing that the goddess would give (y/n) a chance to redeem himself.
"Is that the same excuse you gave when they found you hiding with a dagger in my father's office?", Ferdinand spat as his grip tightened around his training lance. (y/n) was quiet, not knowing what he could possibly say in response to that. He simply looked back down and tended to his weapon. "That is exactly what I expected... Pathetic", the noble scoffed before walking away from the commoner.
"That was out of line, even for him", Edelgard said as she approached her assassin, "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine really", (y/n) said, never looking up from his weapon, "I won't allow his words to distract me from my goal today".
She placed a hand on his shoulder, ignoring how the boy's body immediately stiffened from the contact, "I have no doubt about that, my friend. I am expecting great things from you today".
.....
The mock battle was underway and the Black Eagles already found themselves at a disadvantage. Due to a bad luck, their starting position was out in the open, unlike the Golden Deer, who found shelter in the small gathering of tress, or the Blue Loins, whose base was a good distance from the other houses. Professor Byleth had accounted for this however and made an offensive strategy. The heart of that strategy was getting (y/n) and Edelgard to the house leaders while Byleth, Dorothea and Ferdinand distracted the front line. Byleth didn't understand why Edelgard was so set on her and (y/n) being the main offensive threat, but she did not voice any complaints as it would prove what the young swordsman was capable of.
The plan began with Byleth and the others moving in on Lorenz, who was making an offensive push despite Claude's orders to do otherwise. Ignatz was not fear behind, as Claude sent him in as back up. While Lorenz was a skilled fighter in his own right, he was out numbered three to one as Ignatz was still trying to catch up. Meanwhile, Edelgard and (y/n) made their way towards the Golden Deer's base, moving slowly as they hoped Claude's attention would be focused on the professor in the front lines.
"You staying so close because you don't trust my ability, my lady?", (y/n) whispered as they got closer and closer to the clump of tress Claude was hiding behind.
"Quite the opposite actually, I merely wish to see your work for myself is all. Now keep it down and stay focused. Underestimating the heir to House Riegan will be your downfall", Edelgard scolded back.
Ugh she sounds like the Professor... Though if there was ever a time to listen to that advice it was now
(y/n) took a deep breath and focus in on the trees they were quickly getting closer and closer to. He drowned out the sound the Byleth and the others fighting against Lorenz and Ignatz. The only thing he could hear was his own breathing and the sound of the trees rustling. A thought ran through (y/n)'s head just then, Claude was likely expecting a sneak attack of some kind. He's no idiot and choose his base carefully. The trees would force his opponents to come to him. No, Claude didn't just want anyone. Claude planned on his win condition coming in for the attack, Edelgard herself. Take out the house leader and that team is disqualified immediately. This was Claude's plan all along.
Damn it, if I'm right, then we're playing right into Claude's hands. I need to protect Ed-
(y/n) wasn't able to finish that thought, as the rustling he was hearing from the trees was replaced, by the low hum of a bow's string being drawn. Claude's aim was already set and just a second later, a loud THWIP rung in the air as Claude fired his dull wooden arrow straight for Edelgard. He was hoping that a clean shot to the head would be enough to knock the princess unconscious and get an early elimination on the Black Eagles.
Edelgard could see he arrow shot out of the trees at a incredibly quick pace. She was caught off guard with no time to dodge or guard. Instinctively, her eyes shut and body clenched up as she was prepared to take the hit. However, the hit never cam, even as the sound of the arrow cutting through the air came to a stop. She slowly opened her eyes and was shocked at the sight before her. Standing in front of her was (y/n), the boy from the slums she had recruited, and in his hand was the very same arrow that was just heading straight for her. Her mind quickly put the pieces together as she realized, (y/n) caught the arrow in mid air.
"How... How in the world did you manage that?", Edelgard asked in shock,
(y/n) dropped the arrow and looked at the princess with a small smirk, "It's amazing what happens when you focus for a little bit, huh? Thanks for the tip".
(y/n) turned his attention back the trees, drawing his blade as he entered the Golden Deer's cover. He gripped his blade tightly, as he checked his surroundings, fully aware that Claude was close by. He wouldn't have to wait long the Deer leader to reveal himself, as once again the sound of a bow string being drawn mooched through (y/n)'s ears. He was ready this time, turning around quickly as he managed to deflect the arrow right before it made contact with his chest. Standing face to face to (y/n) now was the heir to House Riegan himself, Claude. Claude stood there with another arrow already drawn and smirk on his face.
"Those are some fancy moves you got there man. Did you learn that from the Empire's worst criminals or was it something you picked up in-between thieving and murdering nobles?", Claude attempted to provoke his opponent.
"Neither believe it or not", was all the assassin said before he tried to rush the house leader.
Claude stood there with that same smirk as you yelled out, "Hilda now!".
Hilda?! Damn it I forgot about her
From, the other side of the small enclosure, the pink twin tailed daughter of House Goneril leapt from her hiding spot. Her axe at the ready as she attempted to bring it down on (y/n)'s head. (y/n) quickly swung his blade upwards, deflecting the hit, however this left him wide open for Claude's range attack. A dull arrow slammed into (y/n)'s side, causing him to stagger slightly, long enough for Hilda to regain her footing. Hilda swung her training axe to the side this time, aiming for the same spot Claude had just struck. (y/n) had little options to defend himself at this point. In a split second decision, (y/n) dropped to the ground, barely dodging the swing of Hilda's axe. A then took his sword and swept it at Hilda's feet, causing the girl to fall on her butt. As she sat there infant of him, (y/n) unintentionally got a good look underneath her skirt, seeing the bright pink underwear she was wearing. He attempted to avert his eyes by looking up at Hilda, only to see her face bright red as her eyes burned with anger.
"What are you?! Some pervert or something?!", she yelled at her opponent.
Before you could try to explain himself, he once again heard Claude drawing his bow and quickly rolled to the side, barely managing to dodge the air that barely missed Hilda's legs.
"Oops, sorry Hilda! I was aiming for his head", Claude yelled back to her.
(y/n) wasted no time, as he quickly jumped to his feet and rushed for Claude. The noble was attempting to grab another arrow from his quiver, when the commoner closed in on him. (y/n) smack Claude's hand with the side of his sword, knocking the arrow out of the archers hand. Claude reeled back in pain only to see (y/n) took another swing, this time aiming for his head.
"Woah, woah! Wait I yield, I yield", Claude cried out as he braced for impact.
(y/n) stopped his blade just a few centimeters from Claude's face, allowing the noble to release his breath. "Whew, I thought you were really gonna take my head there for a second a second", Claude sighed, "I'll admit, I have doubted a little bit too much back there. Damn that Lorenz, if he had followed orders this would've gone just as planned".
(y/n) withdrew his sword as Claude dropped his bow. Before the noble could say anything else, he took a look behind (y/n) and smirked, "Just a heads up pal, I think you have bigger things to worry about".
(y/n) followed his gaze and saw that Hilda had gotten back up on her feet. Her face was flushed and steaming made as she walked towards the Black Eagle student, her grip tight around the handle of her axe. "You really think you can treat a girl and get away with it, you pervert!". Before she could go in for the attack, a loud WHAMmajesty", and with that he hoisted Hilda over his shoulders and made his way out of the battlefield.
"....You don't seriously think I was trying to get a peek under her skirt right?", (y/n) mumbled as he and Edelgard began approaching the Blue Loins base.
" I think you had better focus on defeating Dimitri and less on our female classmates", Edelgard spat, not even looking at him.
.....
Dorothea was way over her head. She had thought that agreeing to participate in the mock battle would be a good way to impress her cute new professor and maybe get on the good side of a brooding classmate of hers. She didn't think that she would actually be in the middle of the battlefield fighting against the future ruler of the Kingdom. Professor Byleth was busy dealing with Dedue and an injured Ferdinand to help Dorothea as she was faced to face with the crown prince.
"I recommend yielding now, friend. There's no shame in admitting defeat you know", Dimitri said with a smile on his face despite the seriousness in his eyes.
"Afraid I can't just back out now, dear. My professor is counting on me after all", Dorothea tried to fake confidence, but she knew she wouldn't last long.
Dimitri said no more words, instead he swung his lance towards her waist. Dorothea managed to barely jump out of the way, only to see the prince lunge out at her, lance aiming for her stomach. She managed to block the hit with her sword, but Dimitri pushed against her weapon so hard that the wooden blade went flying out of her hand and she went falling to her butt. Dorothea gulped as she looked and saw Dimitri swing upwards, prepared to bring his weapon down on her head. Dorothea closed her eyes and awaited ti impact.
Instead she heard the sound of wood clashing against each other and Dimitri grunt, "Now where in world did you come from?!"
Dorothea opened her eyes and saw the back of (y/n) name as he was blocking Dimitri's overhead attack. With he burst of strength, (y/n) pushed the crown prince, causing Dimitri to stumble for a moment. The Black Eagle turned to face his classmate on the ground, "Told you I had your back, didn't I?"
Dorothea just smirked at him before saying, "My, does that make you my personal knight in shining armor?".
The boy just rolled his eyes as he faced Dimitri again, "How about less flirting and more fighting? Edelgard went to help the professor so go give her hand"
Dorothea stood back up and brushed the dirt off her skirt, "Are you sure? Dimitri is quite the fighter..."
"Just go", he ordered bluntly, not even turning to look back at her.
Dorothea quickly picked up her training sword and made her way towards where the others were fighting Dedue and Mercedes. This left (y/n) and Dimitri alone in the open field. Neither said a word to each other as they slowly sized each other up. Dimitri was the first to break the silence, "So, you are the skilled swordsman I have heard much about, hmm?" (y/n) didn't say anything, he only counted to stare back at the prince. "I heard Edelgard saved you from execution after seeing some hidden potential within you. I'd like to see this hidden strength for myself!", Dimitri yelled back as he thrusted his lance.
(y/n) leaped back just barely out of range of the lances strike range. Lances were typically a tough match up for sword fighters. The length of the weapon prevents a sword fighter from getting in close to strike. (y/n) was experiencing this firsthand as Dimitri's wide swings and thrusts constantly kept him out of range to strike back. (y/n) couldn't rely on back up, as he needed to prove he could beat the prince on his own. He only had one option, to use a new combat art the Professor had taught him in one of their first training session. (y/n) just needed to create an opening,
Dimitri took a step forward before swinging his lance wide, aiming for the sword fighters ribs. (y/n) knew this would be his best chance to strike. He used his blade to block the lance and shoved it off of him. The force caused Dimitri to stumble back for just a moment. (y/n) used this to begin rushing in on Dimitri. The prince regain his footing and gripped the lance in both hands, ready to block. (y/n) couldn't help but smirk as Dimitri played right into his hands. (y/n) stopped right in front of the prince before pulling his blade back and squatting down. Byleth had taught him this stance as a way to charge up power for Wraith Strike. (y/n) then put all his into a spin slash, that stuck Dimitri's lance with so much power that the wood snapped in two and Dimitri went tumbling backwards. The sound of the lance breaking echoed across the field, leading all eyes to land on the Prince as he crumbled onto his back. The moment Dimitri sat up, he was met by (y/n)'s blade in his face. The Black Eagle glared down at the Blue Loin leader, clearly waiting for Dimitri to admit defeat.
Dimitri sighed before shaking his head, "Very well, I am not prideful enough to delay the inevitable. I yield to you, my friend. Today you were the better fighter".
(y/n) withdraw his blade, sheathing it away as Seteth yelled across the field, "It has been decided then! Both the leaders of the Golden Deer and the Blue Loins have yelled meaning the winners are the Black Eagles!"
(y/n) closed his eyes and took a moment to take the victory in as the crowd watching the event began cheering loudly for the Eagles. They had won thanks to him defeating both Claude and Dimitri by himself. It was an achievement to be proud of, but unfortunately (y/n) didn't have the time to process all of it before a pair of arms wrapped tightly behind him.
"You did it! You really did it!", Dorothea cheered as she hugged (y/n) from behind, "Never thought I'd see a fellow commoner like myself take down the crown prince".
(y/n) was caught off guard by feeling his classmate press herself so closely against him, "D-Dorothea... Do you mind?"
"Oh sorry, sorry! Got a little too excited there it seems", Dorothea giggled as she released him from her grip, "But still, you were breathtaking out there".
"I have to agree", Edelgard said as she approached the two of them, "You went above and beyond my expectations". The grin on her face didn't go unnoticed by (y/n), as he once again felt his heartbeat quicken for just a moment. "You may have just proven that the Black Eagles are the strongest house. Well done, (y/n)".
(y/n) bowed his head, "Thank you, my lady".
"Oh come on, enough of that my lady stuff!", Dorothea teased, "What are you too nervous to address Edie by her name?"
(y/n) reeled back, "O-Of course not! Do not be ridiculous!"
"Oh yeah", Dorothea put her hands on her hips and smirked, "Prove it, say Edelgard right now".
"Fine!", (y/n) turned to see Edelgard with an expecting grin on her face, "Thank you for the compliment... Edelgard", He mumbled.]
Dorothea couldn't hold back her laugh, "Well well, you actually managed to say it. I'm shocked".
Edelgard giggled quietly to herself as well, "Yes as am I. I must admit, it is a bit refreshing to hear that from you, (y/n)".
(y/n) just scratched the back of his head, trying to regain his composure, "My apologizes..."
"(y/n)", Professor Byleth said, finally approaching the others after dealing with Ferdinand's wounds, "Nicely done. You put on quite the show back there".
(y/n) once agin bowed, "Thank you, Professor. Once I took your advice to heart, it became clear what I needed to do".
"I'll sure say!", Claude said as he approached the group from the Golden Deer's rest area, "Never had one of my arrows caught mid air before like that. What are you feeding this guy teach? And where can I get some?"
Claude extended his hand out towards to (y/n), "But hey, at the end of the day I'm a good sport. Good games brother, but I intend on winning the next time around. I won't be underestimating you anymore".
"Likewise", was all (y/n) said as he shook Claude's hand.
"You forget yourself Claude", Dimitri said as he finally pulled himself up, "Me and the Blue Loins will be aiming for victory as well. You will have be equally prepared for us as you are the Eagles".
"Well, your royal highness, I'd say this house rivalry just got much more interesting. Perhaps an alliance will be needed to deal with our common enemy", Claude winked at Dimitri.
"I fear an alliance with you of all people would surely be our undoing..."
"What's that supposed to mean?!"
