Love, Wei Ying

Summary:

Lan Zhan,

There hasn’t been a day that has gone by that I haven’t thought of you. I find myself constantly turning around wanting to talk to you only to remember you’re an ocean away. It gets a little lonely being abroad. Of course I made friends, but they’re nothing compared to you.

Where Lan Wangji receives the letters that Wei Ying never got to send.

Notes:

Major Character Death is Wei Ying's canonical death

Work Text:

It’s been two weeks. Two long weeks of staring at my cell phone waiting for my date to call or just text me back. A simple, “I had fun” or “Let’s do it again!” or even “I love you” would have suffice. But I guess, being ghosted is one way of rejection.

After all of the dates that we have been through.

We were having so much fun during our last date. At least, I was.

I thought we were going out for dinner at a restaurant, but then he asked if I trusted him. Despite this being our first date, I already knew that he had my heart - and my trust - with the way his smile reaches his eyes causing them to sparkle as he waited for my answer. It seems stupid to trust a someone so quick, but when you meet your soulmate - your other half - you just know.

We ended up ordering take out from the restaurant, picking up a bottle of wine from a convenience store - I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I don’t drink - as we made our way to the park. By the time that we sat down on the grass in the middle of the park, the sun had already set, and the moon was already out, shining brightly above us with the stars twinkling all around us. The quiet music of the cicadas filled the lulls in conversation when both of our mouths were full of food - it was honestly romantic.

“I bet this is the most fun you had in awhile,” he laughed as he drank straight from the wine bottle before handing it over to me. His laughter was contagious, and I couldn’t help the small smile that appeared on my face as I took the bottle of wine from him, setting it down on an even patch of grass. “You don’t talk much, do you?”

He leaned in close enough for me to smell the fruity notes from the wine that he drank. His voice dropping to a low murmur. “I want to know what’s going on inside that head of yours.”

I don’t know what came over me in that moment. One second I was staring into his eyes, and the next second, I was pulling him in for a kiss, closing whatever distance that remained between the two of us. We were both surprised, but it didn’t take him that long for his brain to kick in and respond back to the kiss.

Eventually, I ran out of breath, breaking the kiss. “That’s what’s going inside my head.”

Was I that bad of a kisser for him to not text me back?

Buzz.

Was I really too quiet for him?

Buzz Buzz.

Did he actually not like me this entire time?

Buzz.

I swiftly picked up the phone that was laying in front of me. “Hello?”

“Hi,” answered a voice. It wasn’t his though. He was loud and always full of excitement ready to share everything that was going on in his day - no matter how big or small. The voice that answered the phone was scratchy as if from crying all day, but I could hear the smile that she was trying to maintain. “Is this Lan Wangji?”

“Mn.”

“This is Jiang Yanli - Wei Ying’s sister. Wangji-” Yanli paused, her voice wobbling for a second. “Wei Ying. He’s dead. I - he left some letters for you... Can you meet me at the Lotus Cafe - the one at the edge of Yungmeng?”

I was always one to follow the rules, until I met Wei Ying who saw each rule as a challenge. I could hear Wei Ying laughing into my ear as my knuckles turned red from gripping the steering wheel too hard.

“Rules only work if you get caught, Lan Zhan.”

So going just a little (a lot) over the speed limit to meet his sister mattered very little right now.

Everything seemed suddenly dull without Wei Ying.

The sky was overcast, making the Lotus Cafe seem cold in the fluorescent lighting. The earthy aroma from the teas that normally wafted through the cafe had a sickly, sweet undertone today that slowly became too overpowering. The cafe normally was packed with patrons eating pastries or ordering drinks to go, but today, it was unusually empty except for a few regulars carefully nursing their drinks.

“Lan Wangji.” There was Jiang Yanli seated at a table tucked away in the corner of the cafe. As I walked closer, I noticed how tired she looked - dark bags lined her eyes, eyes that were still red from crying. Yet somehow, she still managed to have a smile on her face. “Would you like to get anything?”

“No.”

Yanli just smiled and poured a cup of oolong from the teapot that she had ordered eariler, handing it to me as I sat down. We each sat in silence, nursing our drinks before Yanli put down her now empty tea cup to lean over to shuffle through her bag. Pulling out a handful of letters from her bag, I set down my tea cup before accepting the letters that Yanli was handing me. My fingers carefully tracing over my name that was clearly written by Wei Ying. Chicken scratch, his voice immediately filled my mind.

“How?” I finally asked, looking up from the envelopes that were adorn with doodles of hearts and rabbits.

“He was driving over the bridge that leads out from Yungmeng over Lotus Lake. Some car was driving on the wrong side and... h-hit Wei Ying causing him to go over the rails and into the waters,” Yanli paused to wipe away the tears that were beginning to fall again. I reached over to put a hand on top of hers.

Yes, I dislike physical contact, but I could just hear Wei Ying saying, Sometimes the other person needs to know you’re there. It’s comforting. If it meant bringing comfort to someone that Wei Ying holds close to his heart, it was the least that I could do.

“Wei Ying- he’s a great swimmer, but he couldn’t even get out of his car because his seatbelt was jammed. The thing that is supposed to keep us alive is what killed him. The other driver died on impact because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. The irony, right? One’s wearing a seatbelt and the other one isn’t, yet somehow both are dead.

“Lan Wangji, he was on his way to see you. I know you guys only started dating recently, but I could tell you that he was madly in love with you. He always has been, even if he didn’t realized it before.”

The letters remained untouched on the coffee table until later that night. All through the day, my thoughts revolved around Wei Ying. He’s never coming back. I’ll never get to see him again. He was alone when he died. Did he die happy?

None of this would have happened, if we never met.

If I didn’t agree to go to the concert for my brother, then I would have never met Wei Ying - my ball of light. A light that has gone out too soon. I don’t regret the time, albeit short, that we spent together.

I sat down on the couch, placing the cup of tea on the coffee table to pick up the letters. I closed my eyes, taking in a deep breath, letting the soothing smell of sandalwood from the essential oil diffuser calm me. Letting out my breath, I opened my eyes and looked down at the first letter covered with doodles before opening the letter.

Lan Zhan!

Hi!

You’re hot ;)

JK.

I think I like you even if you don’t smile or talk. I can talk for the both of us!

The concert was amazing!

You were amazing :)

I’m not usually one to go to classical concerts, but my Shijie’s date bailed last minute and I can’t tell A-Jie no. Especially since she said she’ll make pork ribs and lotus root soup if I go with her. They’re my favorite!

I couldn’t stop watching you. I only know how to play the flute which isn’t as cool as the gupin. What was the song that you played called? The one where you had a solo.

Also, sorry for running into you.

What’s your favorite food, Lan Zhan? I’ll probably have to ask you in person because who knows when I’ll send these letters. lol.

I mean who writes letters these days, and who pours out their heart in these letters. Okay. Not me. lol. Totally rambling.

Maybe I’ll give these letters as a present to you one day. Something to laugh at later when we’re drunk. Do you even drink, Lan Zhan? I heard you guys have Emperor Smile in Gusu. I really want to try it because that’s all anyone ever talks about when they come back from Gusu.

Anyways, I’ll keep this letter short.

Your best friend
Wei Ying :)

The letter was written right after the Gusu Traditional Orchestra concert. Although I attended every year to support Lan Huan who was in the orchestra, this year was different. Lan Huan had woken up extremely ill that morning, and instead of calling in sick, he asked me to fill in for him claiming that they couldn’t cut out the solo that he had.

According to Lan Huan, I was the only one capable enough to play the solo, despite not being in the orchestra. I think the fever was making him delusional. Somehow, Lan Huan convinced his conductor to let me sub in for him.

However, I was running late to the concert due to a car accident that caused a semi to overturn, stalling traffic. What should have been a 20 minute drive ended up taking over an hour. Luckily the solo wasn’t until the middle of the concert, but my absence would still be noticed in all of the other songs.

I had my gupin strapped to my back and was quickly walking through the lobby which was mostly empty since everyone was in their seats waiting for the concert to start in the next 10 minutes. All of a sudden, I felt a body collide into me from the side causing me to stumble.

I quickly caught my balance, turning around ready to glare at the person who bumped into me.

However, right at that moment, Jin Guangyao, one of my brother's friends in the orchestra, came running out. “Lan Wangji! There you are! The concert is about to start in 10 minutes, and you haven’t warmed up. Everyone was worried you weren’t going to show. You and your brother are always punctual. What happened?”

“Car accident.”

Jin Guangyao’s eyes widened dramatically before looking over me to make sure I wasn’t hurt. “Someone else then. Come on. We’re wasting time.”

I only caught a glimpse of a red ribbon on the ground before I was ushered through a door that said employees only.

Despite showing up extremely late, the concert went extremely well, ending with the audience giving us a standing ovation. I took my time packing up gupin seeing that there was no rush to leave before making my way off the stage to the lobby. Jin Guangyao offered for me to join him and the rest of the Gusu Traditional Orchestra for drinks that night. I told him that I don’t drink and that I needed to check up on my brother.

“Hey!” A voice called out as I was leaving.

I paused turning around to see a boy that was around my age leaning against one of the pillars in the lobby. He had his suit jacket off and the sleeves of his dress shirt were rolled up. His hair was pulled up into a messy ponytail with a red ribbon. His eyes had a playful glimmer.

The lobby was empty by now. He was obviously waiting for me.

“You were really good.”

I continued to walk. However, he started following me.

“I’m Wei Wuxian, but you can call me Wei Ying unless you want to call me tonight.”

“Shameless,” I huffed, exiting out of the concert hall.

He was like a shadow. “No seriously. You were really good. You were subbing in, right? That’s what it said in the program. Is Lan Xichen your brother? Where was he tonight?”

I stopped to give him a glare before crossing the street to the parking lot.

“Hey- wait for me! Lan Wangji- Lan Zhan,” I felt a hand grab my arm once I made it to the other side of the street. “I’m sorry for running into you before the concert. My Shijie kept texting me because I was running late. Should’ve been looking at where I was going.”

He paused to look down at his phone as the screen lit up. “Anyways, that’s her. I should go. I’ll see you around!”

I watched as he took off in the direction before continuing to walk to my car. I didn’t need someone stalking me.

It was sheer luck running into Wei Ying after the concert incident. Lan Huan had a concert in Yungmeng and had asked me to go with him, claiming that I don’t get out a lot. I didn’t have much of a choice since Uncle thought that it was a good idea as well.

I was out picking up lunch for Lan Huan and I since Lan Huan was at rehearsal when I heard a familiar voice. “Lan Zhan! What are you doing here in Yungmeng? Are you subbing in for your brother again?”

“No.”

“No? Then how about I show you around town later, if you’re not doing anything. Unless you’re planning to watch the Gusu Traditional Orchestra play... again. Here- give me your phone, so I can give you my number. You can text me if you want to hang out later or if you’re planning to go to the concert.”

Just like that he was gone again.

Lan Huan laughed as I told him what happened when I was picking up lunch. “Go out with your friend, Lan Zhan. I’m glad that you made a friend. You don’t need to stick by me all the time. If you are so worried- share your location with me, okay?”

That evening, I spent with Wei Ying showing me all around Yungmeng - from his favorite restaurant to the small booths selling all kinds of knick-knacks around Lotus Pier to the empty park that was illuminated by the twinkling lights of lightning bugs.

I ended up leaving Yungmeng with a new friend.

I set down the first letter on the coffee table, switching it for the next one in the stack.

Zhan Zhan!

Hiiiiiiiii!

Your uncle is scary. Also, why didn’t you tell me he’s the President - the fricking President of Gusu U! Now I can never transfer there because he hates me. Also how do you survive at school?? There’s so many rules. Go to bed at 9? Wake up at 5am?? What kind of college student are you? Are you sure that you’re even human? I don’t think I’ve signed up for an 8am after freshman year... I don’t even sign up for classes on Fridays!

But don’t you worry Lan Zhan! I won’t be transferring to Gusu U any time soon because even with all of the financial aid, I can’t afford tuition. Also, I’m not as smart as you. But it would’ve been fun to mess with you all day - all the time!

Imagine if we were roommates! lol

Do you think we would be good roommates? Ah. I can just see all the fun we’ll be having - by fun, I mean let’s see how many rules we can break in one night!

Do you have a favorite animal, Zhan Zhan? I have a least favorite animal.

Dogs. *shudder* ugh.

How do people find them cute? They’re terrifying, I tell you! Terrifying!

Have you ever stared a dog in their face? They have these beady eyes and wet nose and THEIR TEETH! Their teeth that will just bite on to you and won’t let go. OH. Don’t get me started on their claws. Claws that you can hear as they come down the street. Just thinking about them growling makes shivers go up my spine. *shiver*

heh.

Anyways. I heard from the grapevine that you have a crush on someone. You don’t have to tell me because I already know! It’s Mianmian, right? I knew you guys were close. I remember from when we all went to that haunted house, you two were pretty close. Holding on to each other and everything.

Sad to see that the great Hanguang-Jun is off the market. :(

Your possibly (but very unlikely) future roommate
Wei Ying ;)

Why anyone thought that I liked Mianmian was obviously delusional. Everyone knew that I liked Wei Ying. Everyone except Wei Ying.

If only that haunted house never existed. The one time I agreed to go out with Wei Ying and his friends is the time that there were some “technical difficulties” in the haunted house. No wonder they made everyone sign a waiver before going in.

Halloween landed on a Saturday this year, I didn’t plan on going out. I didn’t even have the porch light on. However, Wei Ying FaceTimed me earlier, begging me to go. He said he didn’t want to be third-wheeling anyone since everyone that was going was all coupled up. I was still refusing to go at that point, but as soon as Wei Ying said that he didn’t have anyone to hold his hand in case he got scared, my mouth had a mind of its own - “I’ll go.”

Wei Ying wasn’t lying when he said he would have ended up as a third wheel if I didn’t go. He did lie about everyone being coupled up. There was just an odd number of people. Apparently, this is one of the most famous haunted houses. The waiver was in place because people tend to get hurt from passing out in the haunted house. No one really knew what to expect since the theme changed every year - this year’s theme was Divine Beasts.

We were only five minutes into the haunted house when the little bit of lights that was illuminating the hallways flicked and completely went out. Over the quiet rumble of the AC, we could make out dogs howling in the distance.

“I don’t think that was a part of the haunted house,” said Wei Ying. I felt his hand reach out towards me. Whether or not that it was part of the haunted house, we were all starting to get a little spooked.

“No shit!” exclaimed Jiang Cheng from somewhere beside Wei Ying. It was obvious that he didn’t like the fact that he was dragged to go to a haunted house. He let everyone know that he wasn’t happy that his friends were trying to set him up with Mianmian. And he was definitely not happy about the situation that they were in.

We were immersed in complete darkness which made everything just that more terrifying. There were no sounds other than their own breathing and dogs barking - the AC had gone out with the lights. A couple more seconds past, and with a low hum, the power generator finally kicked in. The room suddenly looked like it was covered in blood from the red back up lights, and shadows seem to move on their own.

I felt Wei Ying jumped when the speaker above us crackled to life. I gave his hand a squeeze to reassure him that nothing would happen to him as long as I was there.

A voice from the speaker filled the eerie silence. “To everyone in the Haunted house, we apologize for the power outage. There has been some technical difficulties that will result in the haunted house closing for the night in order to keep everyone safe. Please make your way towards the nearest emergency exit. All tickets for tonight will be refunded or given a voucher for a later date. Thank you.”

“Let’s find the exit and get out of here,” prompted Jin Zixuan, trying to look around without coming off as scared. We all nodded in agreement and pulled out our cell phones as another source of light to help look for an emergency exit sign while we moved forward.

None of us knew which way we were going. As long as we kept moving forward, it didn’t matter.

“Say, Lan Zhan,” started Wei Ying. He had let go of my hand as soon as we started moving through the haunted house in search of an exit. “Is this scary enough for you.”

I opened my mouth ready to answer, but there was a scream coming from behind us. I turned around ready to go towards where the scream came from when Mianmian suddenly came crashing into me causing me to stumble a little.

“What happened?” I asked as I reached out to steady Mianmian. Her grip on my arm did not loosen one bit despite that she regained her balance - clearly shaken by what she saw.

Seeing that Mianmian was suddenly attached to me, Wei Ying turned around to face his brother.

“Jiang Cheng! You’re supposed to stay close to your date! Look, she’s terrified! You know what? Lan Zhan, you and Mianmian can keep an eye out for each other, and I’ll be with Jiang Cheng. We just need to use the buddy systems because who knows what’s in here.”

“G-g-uys,” stuttered Mianmian who was still pale from whatever she had saw in the dark. She had finally let go of me and had her arms wrapped around herself. “There’s something in here. Not the staff, but - just hear me out - it looked as if it was some kinda monster.”

No one needed to see Jiang Cheng to know that he was rolling his eyes. “There’s no such thing as monsters.”

As soon as Jiang Cheng said that, there was low growl that came from behind Mianmian. The temperature in the room suddenly dropped as everyone turned around to look down the dark hallway. A chill ran up my spine. Something heavy was moving towards us. Every step that was taken by whatever that was in the dark caused the ground to tremble.

Acting fast, Wei Ying grabbed both Mianmian and I pushing us towards Jiang Cheng who was near the front of the group. “Jiang Cheng, take the front and start leading everyone out to look for an emergency exit. I’ll take up the rear to make sure no one falls behind.”

Despite the fact that Jiang Cheng mumbled complaints about Wei Ying under his breath, he did start leading the group to find an exit. The growling was becoming louder. The floor was shaking so hard it felt like there was an earthquake. It became clear that we weren’t moving fast enough.

No one noticed that Wei Ying had dropped back. No one but me.

“Wei Ying.”

“Lan Zhan,” laughed Wei Ying, surprised that someone had noticed he had stayed behind. “You should have left with everyone else. Why are you here?”

I looked him in the eyes. “You.”

“Me?” sputtered Wei Ying, clearly caught off guard by my answer. Our conversation came to a halt when a creature that looked like a mix between a snake and a turtle rounded the corner. “That is some really good animatronics. I can smell its breath from here!”

“Wei Ying.” It was a warning this time. I grabbed Wei Ying, forcing him to move. We were running now. Although the emergency lights helped a little to light up the room, we were still stumbling over random props that had been knocked over or left by the staff. At one point, I had tripped over something, spraining one of my ankles in the process.

“Really hoped Jiang Cheng found an emergency exit,” murmerred Wei Ying as he pulled me close to him, throwing my right arm over his shoulder to help me get some weight off of my ankle.

Honestly, it was sheer luck that Wei Ying and I made it out of the haunted house. The owner said that whatever we had saw was just a figment of our imagination. Jin Zixuan threatened to sue, but with the waivers that we had signed before we entered the haunted house, Jin Zixuan’s lawyers couldn’t do much.

Lan Zhan folded the second letter and carefully put it back into its envelope before opening up the third letter.

Zhan’er!

I can’t believe your favorite animals are bunnies! No bunny would believe me if I told them that the great Hanguang-Jun loves rabbits. lol XD

I can’t believe you took me to a rabbit cafe!

Who would’ve thought that the great Hanguang-Jun has a soft spot for rabbits and strawberry milk tea. Although, I do have to say that you’re not human because you got your milk tea without boba! We went to a rabbit BOBA cafe. I can’t believe you, Lan Zhan. Their boba was in the shape of rabbits!

Also, can you believe that Jin Zixuan asked out my sister? A-Jie deserves the best which isn’t that Peacock. He’s never worked his entire life and he spends it without thinking. I’m pretty sure I A-Jie with a new gold necklace when she came home from her date the other day.

Honestly, I would pay money to see him work a day at a restaurant. Could you imagine Jin Zixuan waiting on people and having customers scream at his face? You know what? I think Lotus Pier Cafe is hiring. I’ll tell that Peacock the next time I see him.

Anyways, the next time we hang out we should do the fire noodle challenge! Prepare yourself to feel the burn, Lan Zhan. Honestly, it can’t be that bad. Jiang Cheng always says I have a ridiculously high spice tolerance. I just think Jiang Cheng is a baby and can’t handle his spice.

What’s your favorite food? Can you cook?

Do you even like spicy foods? Maybe we shouldn’t do the fire noodle challenge...

Anyways, Jiang Cheng is yelling at me to go help him.

Fire Noodle Champion,
Wei Ying

I remember the rabbit cafe as clear as day - it was our unofficial official first date, after all.

“A rabbit cafe?” asked Wei Ying, raising an eyebrow at me. “I bet you never ate here before. I doubt you even leave campus to go out in the city. You probably stay in the library all weekend. Say what are you even studying at Gusu U?”

The cafe was designed to look like a garden with white brick walls and large window panes at the front of the store to let in as much natural sunlight as possible. To the right was three wide stair steps covered in turf where patrons were seated on cushions as rabbits roamed freely between letting patrons pet them. To the left were tables where patrons were happily chatting and cooing over the rabbits who were munching away on fruits and veggies.

We walked to the back of the cafe where the counter was. Wei Ying’s eyes scanned over the menu behind the counter as the barista waited patiently for us to order.

“Can I get,” started Wei Ying still looking at the menu before a drink finally caught his attention. He turned around to give me a wink before facing the barista again with a smile. “A large love potion?”

The barista looked over at me before asking, “The usual?”

“Mn.” I answered, handing the barista my card that I had pulled out while Wei Ying was ordering.

“Lan Zhan, I can pay for myself,” argued Wei Ying, quickly reaching into his own pockets for his wallet, but the barista had already swiped my card and was handing it back to me.

“Next time,” I said as I led us over to an empty table sitting down on one of the floor cushions. We came when there was a lull in customers, so there were plenty of rabbits roaming around looking for someone to give them pets.

“The usual, huh? You’re just full of surprises, Lan Zhan.” laughed Wei Ying as he settled across the table from me. “What’s the usual?”

As soon as he asked that, the barista that took our order came over with a tray of drinks and a carrot cake.

“Hi, guys! I have a love potion for you, and a strawberry milk tea, no boba for you, Lan Wangji. I also brought two forks in case you were planning to share the carrot cake.” The barista leaned in close to Wei Ying as if to tell him a secret. “Lan Wangji here always orders one for here and one to go. You know it’s good if he takes one home, so be sure to get a bite before he eats it all!” the barista laughed. “Anyways, you both enjoy.”

Wei Ying looked intrigued by the drink that he ordered. The top half of the drink was a light purple color followed by a layer of pink and finally a layer of orange with lychee jelly at the bottom of the cup.

“Shake.”

Wei Ying grabbed his drink and gave it a good shake before watching, entranced by his drink as it turned into a vibrant pink color. While Wei Ying was occupied by his drink, two rabbits - a black one and a white one - made their way into my lap.

“Lan Zhan! Quick hand me a straw!” exclaimed Wei Ying putting his hand out, his eyes never leaving the drink. Once he felt the straw that I placed in his hands, he stabbed through the plastic covering and quickly took a sip. “This is really good! Lan Zhan, try!”

Immediately, Wei Ying’s drink was right in front of me. I paused, looking at Wei Ying before reaching out to grab the drink from him. I took a sip from his cup before handing it back to him.

“Good, right?”

“Mn.”

“Hey,” started Wei Ying in surprise, noticing that they were not alone. “When did you get two rabbits?”

I reached into my lap, carefully picking up the white rabbit to hand to Wei Ying who immediately took it and began cooing at the rabbit.

“So calm... Just like you, Lan Zhan!” Wei Ying continued to pet the rabbit. “Lan Zhan, you never told me what you’re majoring in.”

“Music therapy,” I answered as the black bunny squirmed out of my lap to join his friend by Wei Ying.

“Ooh, fancy. I came in undeclared, so I ended up taking a bunch of different classes my freshman year. I’m majoring in communications right now, but I’m thinking about switching majors... maybe photography? I don’t know, but can you imagine me at a desk job? I want to do something where I can travel and see the world.”

And Wei Ying did just that. It was the last week before school started at Gusu University and two weeks before the University of Yungmeng at Lotus Pier when Wei Ying dropped the news.

“I’m going abroad. I got accepted into this big liberal arts school over in the States... I’m actually leaving in a couple of days. I don’t know when I’ll be back. Maybe the big holidays. For sure when I’m done with school and graduated with my degree! Anyways, you have my WeChat. I’ll text you all about what I’m doing, and I’ll be sure to post pictures just for you - everyday!”

I looked over sadly at him, “Everyday means everyday, Wei Ying.”

It wasn’t until three years later that Wei Ying finally came home for summer break. He had lost all of his baby fat - his jaw was sharper, his cheekbones were more defined, and he was tanner now, too. Yet, he never lost the sparkle in his eyes. This was also the year that Wei Ying confessed that he liked me - that he couldn’t stop thinking about me when he was abroad which led to our first official date.

Our first official date was the last time I saw him alive - both of us basking underneath the moonlight as it washes away the last three years of being apart.

With trembling hands, I opened the last envelope. My brows furrowed in confusion as a red ribbon - his red ribbon - fell out when I unfolded the letter.

Lan Zhan,

There hasn’t been a day that has gone by that I haven’t thought of you. I find myself constantly turning around wanting to talk to you only to remember you’re an ocean away. It gets a little lonely being abroad. Of course I made friends, but they’re nothing compared to you.

I know we constantly text, but it’s just not the same. The time difference makes it difficult to call with how early you go to bed. I just miss being able to talk to you.

You know what they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder, or whatever.

I’ll admit - How I left was stupid. How long it took for me to realize that I love liked you is ridiculous.

I’m sorry. I’m sorry for leaving you like that. I’m sorry for returning your feelings sooner, but I’m not sorry for running into you all those months ago back at that concert. How flustered you were.

You know what?

Now that I think about it, you totally fell for my pick up line! XD

Anyways, I’ll be coming home for New Years. Meaning, I’ll be home for a little over a month before heading back to finish up this year. After that I’ll only be gone for one more year, and I’ll be home. I don’t think I ever want to be this far from you ever again.

Since we’ll still be an ocean apart, I’m giving you my red ribbon so that I’ll always be with you.

How’s life as a music therapist, Zhan Zhan?

Do you still go to the rabbit cafe? I missed that place. The boba over here is terrible!

When I’m back, I’m taking you out for dinner since you said that I could next time. Ooo where would we go? What should we do? I have an idea, but I think I’ll keep it as a secret because I want to see your reaction. Your uncle would hate me more than he already does once he realizes that I’m taking you out for a date. Wow. I guess this would be our first date.

I’ll see you in a couple of days!

Love,
Wei Ying ( ˘ ³˘)♥

Notes:

Inspired by this writing prompt:

Write about how your character waited two weeks for their date to call. What seemed like a perfect evening must've not been all that great for them. Then their date’s sibling called... to tell them that they have died. But they did leave a few notes with your character’s name on them before it happened.

While in quarantine, my friend and I are sending each other letters that are inspired by writing prompts. Hope y'all are finding ways to stay sane during social distancing.
