Chapter Text
Castiel whimpered as he ran into the corner, little brother on his lap, as Naomi beat on their dad.
He wanted to stand up, demand she stop, but the last time he tried such a thing- well, his back still held the scars, a physical reminder of that fateful day. One that haunts his dreams at night, with no soothing touch to calm him when he wakes up in tears.
Cas buried his face in the soft peach fuzz called Gabriel's hair, sobbing silently. He heard the terrible sound of shattering glass and his father's scream of pain, causing him to pull Gabe closer to his chest, tightening his hold the slightest bit.
Gabriel startled at the loud noise, starting to cry too as he struggled to comprehend why daddy sounded like he was hurt, and the overwhelming scent of omega in distress permeated the air around them.
Castiel tried to quiet him, but it was too late, Naomi turned towards them, eyes a deep, terrifying red, signaling her alpha rage.
Cas angrily wiped his tears as he stood up, gently pushing the six-month-old behind him, protecting him from harm, even as his mother stalked towards him and every instinct in his body telling him to recoil in fear. He would not let her hurt the innocent child that she helped bring into this world, of her own free will.
He cried out, the sound loud and pitiful in his own ears, when a hard hand hit the left side of his face, bringing with it a vicious sting that made him tear up for an entirely different reason.
Gabe cried louder, and that gave him the strength to just stand there and take it, protecting his brother from the hand that should provide a calming touch, not blinding pain.
...
Chuck died of cancer when Cas was ten, leaving him in the care of his mother for five gruesome months. Michael tried to be there, acting as a barrier between Naomi and himself when he wasn't working. They both made sure Gabriel was never on the receiving end of their mother's anger, trying to preserve his innocence for as long as possible.
He was five at the time, and he didn't always understand why Cas couldn't open one of his eyes, or why Naomi made him cry so much. Castiel was glad that he also didn't understand how the feeling of a belt on skin felt.
But after those first five months of horror with just their mother, Michael got custody over both Gabriel and Castiel, and they all moved into a nice little apartment, putting almost twelve hours of space between them.
And when Cas was eleven, Michael met Lucifer, who he soon mated, and then they were all living in Lucifer's cozy townhouse. Cas even got his own room for the first time since living with Naomi. He tried to look at the silver lining.
...
Castiel presented as an omega at the ripe old age of twelve. And his first thought when Michael told him he was experiencing a heat, was that this meant alphas could do whatever they wanted to him.
And, in a way, he was right.
When he was thirteen, a family moved in next door, one with a sixteen-year-old alpha.
One that would sneak in when Michael and Lucifer were at work, Gabriel at daycare.
He would touch Cas, and tease him, say he was desperate for a knot, that all bitches like him were.
Castiel would turn away in shame, silent tears falling as the alpha fondled his ass, stroking his flushed alpha cock over his bare stomach, talk about how he would mark him so everyone knew he belonged to an alpha.
The first time he was taken, he sobbed openly, the agony of feeling like he was being split open from the inside was almost too much to bear.
And even worse, the way the alpha was rutting into him, it was jostling the scars on his back, making them tingle in phantom pains.
The second time was better, in the sense that he didn't cry as much. It still hurt, especially when the alpha forced his knot inside him, and for a minute, he was scared of becoming pregnant.
But no such thing happened.
And, so, this went on for a year. The alpha got cocky enough to start sneaking in when everyone else was asleep. Castiel would go to school, feeling uncomfortable around all the alphas, but even more so when he sat down and the pain in his ass flared up, bright and blinding, reminding him of his place in the world, just because he wasn't born with a knot.
Then, that night, the alpha from next door would sneak in and take him again, knot him while whispering degrading things. And the next morning, he would scrub all traces from his body before the cycle repeated itself.
And Cas hated himself. For allowing this to happen. For just laying there and taking it. For being too weak to tell someone.
But Michael was so happy with Lucifer. And Gabriel was finally making friends, coming home excited, blabbering on about his day at school.
Why should he ruin that happiness for everyone else?
It all changed, though, when Michael was promoted and moved them to Lawrence, Kansas. Leaving behind the cruel alpha who always got a sick sense of pleasure when Cas cried, the pain in his hole taking over his will to stay strong.
He hoped the next alpha that inevitably used him wasn't as harsh.
But deep down he knew he wouldn't get such a luxury.

Chapter Text
Being a sixteen-year-old omega about to enter junior year of high school was very worrisome for Castiel. He knew better than anyone that sixteen-year-old alphas saw what they wanted and took it, no matter who it hurt.
And while Cas wanted to just douse himself in blockers, he didn't have enough money for that. So everyone could smell him. More importantly, they could smell what he was.
Castiel was deathly afraid of alphas- of any age, really. But he couldn't very well tell Michael. What was he gonna say? "Yeah, I know mom being an abusive alpha was detrimental to my mental health, but I'm also afraid of being taken against my will. Again."
Yeah, fuck that. No one could know what he had let happen to him.
So, he sucked it up and went to school, surrounded by people of all orientations, and tried not to panic when an alpha got just a little too close.
And it worked. For three years, it worked.
Until it didn't.
...
Castiel walked with Gabriel to the middle school, for his first day of 6th grade.
"I can't believe I'm finally in middle school, Cassie! Soon I'll be in high school. Just like you!" Cas smiled, though it was slightly forced. The first day back to school always made him especially nervous.
"Just like me, buddy. You've grown up so much." Cas wished upon wishes that Gabriel would not present as an omega. He didn't want his little brother, the person he's tried to protect from harm, to go through what he has to.
Gabe looked up at him with wide, sparkling eyes, and a smile to match. Cas hoped he would never lose that child-like innocence.
"You really think I could be like you?" He asked in an awe-inspired voice.
Castiel hoped not.
"You can be whatever you want, bud." As long as you're not an omega too was left unspoken.
He was surprised when he had stubby arms wrapping around his waist and a chubby face nuzzling into his stomach. Cas grinned, ruffling his hair.
"You should go inside now. I'll meet you back here at the end of the day, okay?" Gabe nodded against his stomach before practically running to the school. He stopped by the door, turning toward him and yelled out a cute 'I love you' before darting inside.
Castiel stood there for a moment, smile on his face before turning away, starting his trek to the high school.
...
Cas was in first hour English when he was assigned a seat next to an alpha. He wanted to go up to the teacher, beg her to change his seat, place him next to another omega, or even a beta. But she had said the seating chart was final before he even got a chance to.
He turned away, hiding his face in a notebook when the alpha threw a salacious grin his way.
All alphas were the same.
...
In third hour Calculus, the teacher let them choose their own seats, which Cas was internally grateful for.
He chose a seat in the corner closest to the door, not wanting the only exit to be blocked. He was startled when a redheaded beta took the seat on his right.
She smiled brightly at him, and Cas almost thought she was going to engage him in conversation, but the teacher started to explain the syllabus before she could. If she was even going to in the first place.
...
"Hey, wait up!" Cas turned, confused, to the person calling after him. It was the redheaded beta from class.
"Hey!" She said, slightly breathless once she got up to where he was standing, frozen and wide-eyed, like a deer trapped in headlights. "I'm Charlie," She shifted a few things to her left arm, before holding out her right to be shaken.
"Um, Cas," He replied awkwardly, reaching out a hand for her to shake before letting it drop to his side.
"Cool! I'm new here, and was wondering if you wanted to sit together at lunch?" Cas was even more confused because people rarely talked to him, especially not when looking for companionship.
He just nodded dumbly, too stunned for verbal communication. Charlie either didn't notice, or didn't care, because she just beamed at him. It was almost blinding and he found himself inexplicably drawn to her.
"Great! I just have to go to my locker, but I'll meet you there." And then she was gone, lost in the sea of students trying to get to where they needed to go.
He furrowed his brows before just shrugging and going to his own locker to deposit his stuff.
Maybe this year wouldn't be so bad after all.
...
Lunch with Charlie was both easy and interesting. She contributed to the conversation a lot more than he did, but the quirky beta seemed content to fill the silence with her own chatter, and Cas chipped in every now and then, so he figured he wasn't too bad of a conversation partner.
He could already tell this was the start of a budding friendship. And he felt a lot better about that fact when Charlie told him that she was a lesbian. So, no chance of attraction for either of them. Thank fuck.
...
When Castiel got home, he was feeling pretty good about his day. Not much happened in the classes after lunch, and then he was going to get Gabriel, who talked about his first day the entire walk to their neighborhood.
When they got to the house, Cas was faintly surprised Gabriel could still speak. His voice would definitely be hoarse if he were Gabe.
"How was your day?" Gabriel asked once Cas got the front door unlocked, making their way into the living room.
"It was good, bud. Not as exciting as yours, that's for sure. Tell me more about this friend you made. Sam, was it?" Gabe nodded and started to talk again as Cas shed his backpack before going to the kitchen to make them a snack.
Yeah, things were starting to look up.

Chapter Text
Castiel was happy. Actually, for the first time in his life, truly happy.
He and Charlie soon became best friends, and Michael was beyond thrilled when Cas finally started bringing home friends. Well, friend. As in singular. But still. It was more than what Cas used to have.
Sometimes, in the hallway, he'll hear slurs as he passes alphas, and sometimes even betas, but it never went further than that and Cas has gone through much worse than being called a derogatory term, so he accepted that. It's what happened when you were an omega.
Other than that, everything else seemed to be going great. They were only a few weeks into the first semester, but he was flourishing in his studies. First hour could be a downer, because the alpha next to him was a stupid bigot, but after that, Charlie would link arms with him in the hallway and talk to him while they went to their individual classes, and it'd make him forget everything about English class, and the hurtful phrases that alpha spat at him.
In the fourth week, though, things changed, like they always did to keep your life in balance.
In fifth hour Anthropology, a quiet beta girl usually sat next to him. But, she wasn't there. And when class was almost starting, a green-eyed alpha took that seat instead.
Cas wanted to just pack up and sit somewhere else, but if he did that, the exit would be blocked. So, he picked the lesser of two evils and stayed sitting next to the strange alpha.
Surprisingly, he didn't say anything all hour, except for when he asked the teacher something.
When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of class, Castiel grabbed all his stuff, rushing out of class, and away from the alpha who almost smelled like apple pie, not that Cas noticed, or cared.
That night, Cas worried as Gabriel told him all about Sam, who just presented as an alpha.
...
The next day, Cas was relieved to see the beta from Anthropology class in the hallways. But when fifth hour rolled around, he entered the classroom to find the same alpha from the day before sitting in her seat.
Castiel pushed down the anxious fluttering in his stomach and sat down next to him.
After that, the green-eyed, pie-smelling alpha took up residency in the seat every day, and Cas was just waiting for when he finally made his move. Whether that included making sexual gestures and demands, or throwing omega slurs his way. Or maybe even both, if he was especially terrible.
But the alpha- Dean, he soon learned was his name, he stayed quiet. This went on for two excruciating weeks, which was filled with Cas anxiously keeping a close eye on him, wondering if that was going to be the day Dean did something.
It was a Wednesday when Mr. Fuller, the Anthropologist teacher, announced they'd have to partner up with the person next to them for their first project.
Cas swallowed nervously, his throat suddenly dry, as he turned to see the alpha staring at him with a strange intensity in his eyes.
They only had about five minutes left of class, which Dean must have realised because he pulled out a piece of paper, writing something on it before handing it over.
Castiel reluctantly grabbed it, looking down to find some numbers scrawled in hurried writing.
"It's my phone number. You can text, or call, me so we can set up a time to meet." Dean was smiling at him, and Cas just nodded in understanding, not returning the smile. He didn't want to give the alpha any more ideas than he probably already had.
When they were dismissed, Cas made his way up to the teacher, biting his lip anxiously before Mr. Fuller noticed him.
"Yes, Castiel?" The beta asked kindly, sitting down at his desk.
"Um, I was wondering if there was an-any way I could change partners?" One that's not an alpha. But he was pretty sure he wouldn't be allowed to change partners just because of his secondary gender.
"Is there something wrong with Mr. Winchester? Because as far as I'm concerned, he's an exceptional student, and would be a great partner on this project."
"Well, I just... I don't feel completely comfortable working with an alpha," He admitted, because he really didn't know anything about Dean, so it's not like he could just make up a believable excuse.
Mr. Fuller sighed, and Cas almost expected an eye roll to follow, but it never came. "Castiel, I understand that you might feel more comfortable working with another omega or something. But school prepares you for life, and you won't exactly be able to have all omega coworkers just because you don't like alphas. I'm sorry, but you can't change partners. Now, get to your next class. Before you're late."
He wanted to protest, but he knew it wouldn't get him anywhere and he already felt uncomfortable with the amount of confrontation.
So, with furrowed brows, and a heavy heart, he left the room, resigning himself to the fact that he'd be taken advantage of by yet another alpha.
Hopefully, with his aging, it won't be as painful this time.
But when was life ever so kind?

Chapter Text
Dean groaned as his alarm went off at too-fucking-early O'clock. Being a junior was great and all, but he wished he could just be done with school. Or at least a senior, so he was closer to being done.
No seventeen-year-old wanted to be awake before the stupid sun to get ready and mingle with assholes. None that he knew, anyways.
He got up because while he would be fine with skipping school, he was Sam's transportation, and even though he was young, Dean knew he was going places. And Dean wasn't going to hinder him just because he wanted more sleep.
Unlike himself, Sam was happy to be up early, so Dean wasn't worried about him as he quickly dressed before going down to make them breakfast. Mom was still sleeping off her night shift, and dad had left an hour ago, so food was up to him. At least in most mornings.
He opted for a simple dish, cheesy, scrambled eggs, with disgusting kale sprinkled over Sam's because he's an abomination of God. Not that Dean was religious or anything.
When the food was done and plated, Sam was dressed, and his ridiculously long hair was brushed. All in all, he looked like a little princess. Dean stated as much, which earned him a bitchface and the middle finger.
"Hey, now! You're too young for that shit. Now stop complaining and eat." Sammy rolled his eyes, but didn't object as he started in on his eggs, eating them at record speed.
Dean understood. He remembered what it was like coming out of his first rut.
"You gonna tell your little boyfriend about your new alpha status?" He teased as he ate his own food at a more reasonable pace.
"He's not my boyfriend!" Sam objected after finishing his plate, face red.
"Sure he isn't," Dean said with an unbelieving eye roll. "Just finish what's left in the pan so we can go, bitch." Sam grumbled at him, but was too busy stuffing his face to respond.
...
When Dean got to school after dropping Sam off, he was too drowsy to pay attention to anything. Not even at lunch. Benny and everyone else was laughing around him, and he barely even registered the sound. He was up late the night before working on homework after he was done at his actual job. He worked part-time at an auto shop owned by his uncle.
He was a little more awake after eating, and by the time fifth-hour Anthropology came, he was ready to actually engage in what was being taught.
When he walked into the classroom, he was making his way to go sit by Garth when bright blue eyes caught his attention. He faltered long enough to take in the scent and holy fucking shit.
That was the single best thing he'd ever smelled, and he took advantage of the empty seat next to they blue-eyed student to take in more of it.
He smelled like leather-bound books, honey, a field of sunflowers, and Sunday mornings spent eating pie. It was positively mouthwatering. And with that was the unmistakable scent of unmated omega.
His alpha wanted to just nuzzle up to the omega's scent gland, mark him as his. But Dean wasn't a knothead, and even if he was, scenting is an intimate act that should really be consented to. He certainly wouldn't want some strange omega getting all cozy with his scent gland.
Dean wanted to talk to him, start some kind of conversation, but what would he even say? Anything he had sounded creepy, pervy, or both.
So, he just sat silently, subtly scenting the air, and waiting for an opportunity to talk to him.
...
Dean made sure to sit in the same spot the next day, hoping the omega would sit there too. Garth, thankfully, didn't seem too bitter about the fact that he was sitting on the opposite side of the room now.
It took two weeks before he found a reason to talk to the very beautiful omega. Two weeks of stolen glances, subtle scenting, and pining thoughts. This opportunity came in the form of a presentation.
And while Dean absolutely hated doing projects, he found it would probably be worth it when he got to work with this absolute angel.
He watched the omega to see his reaction to the news, and when he turned to meet his gaze, Dean almost startled when he realised how electrifying those eyes were when focused on him.
Blue was his new favorite color.
So, he wrote down his phone number, trying not to seem too eager as he handed it to Cas. Yeah, Dean knew his name. But his inner alpha purred when he referred to him as omega.
Not because Dean believed omegas are lesser beings because of their orientation, but because he felt happy and soft when he thought of Cas maybe someday being his omega.
He was a little disappointed when he didn't get to hear his voice. Because the omega hasn't spoken once in the past two weeks. But Dean just summed it up to him being shy.
He stayed behind a little when Cas went up to talk to the teacher and oh my god. That voice! It was like a fucking wet dream. Well, until he realised Cas was trying to get a new partner.
He felt hurt swell up inside him as he rushed to leave before he could hear more of the conversation.
Okay, so maybe Cas wouldn't be his omega sometime in the future.
His alpha recoiled in his rejection, whining in the pain that came along with that. And it really shouldn't hurt as much as it did. He barely even knew Cas. Actually, scratch that. Didn't know him at all. The only things he did learn over the time spent sitting next to him was his name, Castiel, orientation, omega, and that he didn't like Dean for some reason.
That last fact had him wanting to curl up in his nest to wallow in his misery.

Chapter Text
As much as Castiel didn't want to text anybody, alpha or not, he bit the bullet and sent a message. They only had about a week and a half to work on this project, and he really needed a good grade. Though, he doubted Dean would help much with that.
Alphas weren't very capable of thinking with anything other than their knot. Add in the fact that they think such frivolous activities, such as school, was meant for omegas and omegas alone.
So, yeah, he wasn't expecting much of a partnership here.
Castiel to Dean (4:36 PM) :
Hello. Dean? This is Castiel, the omega from class.
Cas gritted his teeth, but he doubted Dean knew anything about him other than the fact that he was unmated omega, ripe for the taking.
Dean to Castiel (4:44 PM):
i know ur name Cas. what's up?
Cas was actually surprised by that. Dean knew his name? How? It's not like he exactly told the alpha anything about him. Then he realised, like a dumbass, that Mr. Fuller said his name.
Castiel to Dean (4:46 PM):
Right. Anyways, did you wanna meet up to do the project or something?
He knew Dean would most likely make him do it himself, but he had to at least try to rope the alpha into it somehow.
Dean to Castiel (4:48 PM):
yeah sounds good. my place alright? i could drive you after school tomorrow.
Cas bit his lip, not wanting to be alone with an alpha in his own house. When he tried something, there would be no one there to help him.
Castiel to Dean (4:50 PM):
Well, I have to walk my little brother home after school.
It was true, Castiel didn't feel comfortable with Gabriel walking home by himself. And if it also gave him the perfect excuse, then that was just an added bonus.
Dean to Castiel (4:53 PM):
i can drop him off for you. then we could head over to my place to get started. how does that sound?
He knew that he was out of excuses, and that he would have to go over to his house, subsequently losing that last bit of happiness he was trying to hold onto. He wanted to cry at the loss.
Maybe Dean wouldn't knot him.
Hopefully.
Castiel to Dean (5:00 PM):
Okay. Sounds good. I'll see you tomorrow.
Cas decided to spend his last good day with Gabriel. After tomorrow, his small, collected amounts of happiness would be gone, his soul crushed. He wouldn't be the same, he knew.
There was only so much he and his inner omega could take. Why couldn't he have just presented as alpha?
He wondered what it would be like if he did have a knot. Would he also be a knothead? Taking what he wanted, when he wanted, with no regard to anyone else? Would he take advantage of unwilling omegas?
He really hoped not. Castiel liked to think that he would be a good alpha, a fair one.
He checked his phone one last time before going to find Gabriel.
Dean to Castiel (5:02 PM):
great. see you tomorrow, Cas. can't wait.
...
Dean couldn't believe his luck. He actually managed to get Cas to agree to come to his home. He would see Dean's nest.
Fuck! His nest.
Dean put his phone up and started stripping the mattress of his bedding.
He bundled them together, carrying the armload downstairs to the laundry room.
He untangled them so he could throw them in the washer. He didn't want Cas to think that his nest was dirty.
Once the washer was going, he went back up to his bedroom to fluff up his pillows, deciding there weren't enough.
Making his way to the bathroom linen closet, he grabbed some extra pillows, only the fluffiest would do.
He couldn't exactly make up the bed yet. Not without the clean sheets.
But he felt good about this. After the bedding was clean, his nest would be the comfiest in the house, meant to please the omega he so desperately wanted to court.
He had to wait to start the courtship, though. Ease the omega into it, wait until he was comfortable in Dean's presence, until they were friends.
Then, and only then, he would ask Cas if he would allow Dean to court him.
...
The next day, Cas tried not to think about what would await him that night.
Trying to just enjoy himself at the moment. But, apparently, he wasn't doing a good enough job because Charlie almost immediately called him on his bullshit.
"What's going on, Cas? I can practically hear that pretty head of yours thinking," For emphasis, she ruffled her hair, smiling her sweet smile at him.
"Nothing, really. I'm okay, just imagining some stuff. Sorry for being too loud," He playfully smacked her hand away, smiling right back at her. And for the first time that day, it wasn't forced.
He was bringing himself down as he tried to think of a way to make the experience with Dean less painful.
Would he still be a little loose from the other alpha? If so, would Dean be mad? Would it hurt more or less this way? Probably less, but what if Dean was bigger? What if his knot was like having a baseball up there?
He almost didn't understand how omegas could find sex enjoyable. Did slick make it easier? Better? Could he ever find pleasure in it? Or would it always be painful for him?
No alpha would ever wait for when he was truly ready. Castiel was demisexual, something he found out through lots of research. No one wanted to wait to establish a bond with him before consummating.
He could never truly have a normal relationship. He wished he was like everyone else. That he could instantly feel sexual attraction.
By now, he's kind of accepted that he will never date anyone. Not of his own free will, at least.
"You're doing it again," Charlie sing-songed, but she eyed him in concern.
"Seriously, Cas. What's going on?" Cas didn't want to tell her. She'd recoil in disgust if he ever told her about his past experiences.
Anyone in their right mind would. Just like he couldn't tell her what would happen tonight.
Hell, he didn't even want to think about what was happening after school. But the more he tried not to think about it, the more he thought about it.
He really had to get his shit together.

Chapter Text
Dean had a big, bright smile on his face as he walked into Anthropology class, eyes immediately zeroing in on Cas.
For the first time since childhood, he had made his bed after waking up that morning, rearranging everything so it looked warm and inviting for the omega.
Not that Dean wanted to bed him. He just wanted Cas to like his nest. Maybe even want to enter it. In a non-sexual way, of course.
Dean was a virgin, and didn't care if other people thought he wasn't a real alpha because of that. Dean wanted his first time to be with someone he loved. Not with someone who was just willing. And definitely not someone who was unwilling.
Taking the seat on Cas' right, the one he has claimed as his, he beamed even brighter. That delicious smell he has associated with the omega wafted up in his nose, and he delightfully inhaled, though in a, hopefully, nonobvious way.
Mr. Fuller just told them to get started before silently taking attendance.
Dean turned to the omega, who was already looking at him with nervous eyes.
Maybe he was shy.
"Hey, so, I don't really have any ideas about what we should research. You?" He had tried to think of some ideas last night while he waited for his bedding to wash, hoping to impress the omega with his intellect, but he was none too lucky.
Cas seemed to think for a moment before clearing his throat, as if he hadn't talked in a while.
Dean almost wondered if he was a mute.
"I, uh, had a few. What do you think about the domestication of dogs? We could do our project on how that process happened, comparing old age dogs to the ones we keep as pets today," Dean knew he had an awe-struck look on his face, which in turn caused Cas to fidget and avert his eyes.
"Sorry, that was probably a stupid idea. What about-"
Even though it was rude, Dean cut him off, not wanting the omega to second guess himself. "Cas, dude, that's a great idea. I just- in previous experiences, I worked on projects with alphas," He rolled his eyes at the mere thought, "And it's just nice to work with someone who actively participates and is smart. Partnering up with knotheads is not my idea of a fun time." One more eye roll, just in case he didn't emphasize how dumb alphas could be. Especially adolescent male alphas.
...
Cas was confused.
Dean almost seemed... kind. Which was a stupid thought in and of itself.
And then he'd realised .
Grooming .
He's read horror stories about alphas grooming omegas to condition them to think that the abuse inflicted upon their person was normal, maybe even deserved.
Dean was, in a way, worse than the other alphas.
At least they didn't try to hide their true intentions.
And when they got to Dean's house, he was gonna knot Cas, maybe even try to breed him in an attempt to keep Cas as his personal omega slave.
I'd rather it be me than Gabriel.
Maybe if he played his cards right, Dean wouldn't be too harsh on him.
...
Something dark and scary passed over Cas' eyes, and Dean didn't know how to decipher that.
He wanted to ask if everything was okay, but they weren't exactly friends, so Cas would most likely not tell him anyways.
The omega almost looked... haunted. Haunted and afraid. Dean never wanted Cas to be afraid. Especially not around him.
And before he could think of a good way to bring it up, it was gone, leaving his face in a cold neutral.
And that was even more terrifying than the haunted look.
Filing the information for later, he started to talk about the presentation aspect of the project.
...
As much as Cas was loathe to admit it, Dean's car was gorgeous. It was sleek and black, so clean it was shining, like some kind of fine jewelry.
Dean must have read his expression because he was laughing, getting into the driver's side.
"She's a beaut, ain't she? Restored her with my dad. She was barely more than a scrap of junk metal when we found her. Took months of hard work, but she's definitely my pride and joy."
And no matter how hard he tried to fight it, Cas found a small smile spreading on his lips. Dean's happiness was contagious.
"All right, where's your brother?" Dean asked, voice raised slightly so he would be heard over the smooth purr of the beast beneath them.
"Middle school. He should be waiting up front." Dean laughed again, and Cas tilted his head in a confused manner.
"Man, shoulda told Sammy to stay put. Didn't think your brother was a middle schooler, so I told mine to take the bus today, instead of having me take him home."
Another boisterous laugh and then they were peeling out of the lot.
Not only was Dean's happiness contagious, so was his laugh.
Cas was determined to keep the laugh trying to bubble up his throat inside, though. And, in the end, he succeeded at staying quiet.
...
After dropping off a very excited Gabriel, Dean drove to -presumably- his house.
Cas was just a bundle of nerves the entire time. He tried to enter a different headspace, pretend like what was about to happen, well, wasn't.
Apparently, his mind hated him, though, because all he could think about was how much it would hurt.
Would Dean have any mercy on him? Or would he just go for it?
"You okay?" Cas yelped when Dean said something for the first time since dropping off Gabriel. The alpha looked at him apologetically before turning back to the road.
"Sorry, Cas. Didn't mean to startle you. It's just..." He upturned his nose, visibly sniffing the air. "It smells like distressed omega in here. And since you're the only omega that has been in here for, like, a week, it's gotta be you."
Cas wondered about the other omega. Were they taken advantage of too? Were they forced into the car? Did Dean even know them? Or did he just figure they smelled good and decided to use them?
"Sorry. I'm, uh, I'm fine. I can open a window, if you'd like?" He guessed smelling distressed could be a huge turn-off. And as much as he wanted to use that to get Dean to stay away from him, he wasn't sure if he would be punished for it.
"No, no, it's fine. I don't mind it. Just wanted to make sure you're all right." Now Castiel was really confused. Why would Dean care? Or pretend to care? He understood that Dean was trying to groom him, but still. This seemed like a small thing, even then.
"We're gonna be there, in like, a minute or so. Just so you know." And then it went silent again. And Cas honestly didn't know if that was better or worse.
Dean parked in the driveway of a nice house. Bigger than Cas' but not by all that much. And that settled him, if only a little, for some strange reason. But at this point, he'd take any comfort that he could get.
Just a few more minutes and then he'd be taken against his will by the second alpha in his life. It took all the strength he had to force himself out of the car, standing idly by as Dean got out as well, fishing for his house keys.
Cas didn't understand why it wasn't with his car keys, but he wasn't stupid enough to ask.
"Ah-hah! Got it!" And Dean looked so triumphant that if Cas wasn't almost shaking from fear, he'd think that it was cute.
Dean got the door unlocked, opening it for Cas to go in first. And as soon as he did, his knees buckled, and he felt like he was going to be sick.
A wave of alpha hit him, and now he was even more afraid.
Three. There were three alphas living here. And now that he was paying attention, there was also the hint of a female omega living here as well.
The poor girl was probably being abused, kept here against her will.
"Everything all right?" Dean asked, feigning concern as he passed the threshold as well.
"U-uh, yeah. Fine. Where to?" Just a few minutes now.
"My room. Come on," Dean started towards the staircase, and Cas stood stock-still for a moment, willing his legs to follow.
It took another long minute before they obeyed and he followed Dean.
When they got up to the alpha's bedroom, Cas was almost stunned.
For one, that nest looked amazing. Definitely not the worst place he's been taken.
And, the entire room smelled like apple pie with whipped cream, grease and oil, the smell of earth after a thunderstorm, and lounging in bed on Sundays. It almost had hints of... comfort and safety.
His nose was just acting up. It was the only logical explanation for why he suddenly felt warm and protected.
Time to get this over with.
"Where do you want me?" He asked quietly, wanting to hurry up so they'd have time to actually work on their project.
"On the bed is fine." And then, to Cas' surprise, Dean sat down in his desk chair instead, rolling it over to where Cas was making his way up to the headboard, laptop in hand.
"So, do we want a slides presentation? Or something else?" Maybe Dean just wanted to work first? And then get pleasure from Cas?
"Um, slides sounds good, I guess."
Dean absolutely beamed.
"Awesome."
...
It was around six O'clock, and they got a good chunk done. Dean, at some point, had gravitated closer and now they were both sharing the bed.
"So, Cas," This is it. He's gonna try something now. "How about you stay for dinner? Mom's making some baked penne. She's a great cook. What do you say?"
Castiel was so surprised by the question, he let out a reflexive "Yeah," and almost immediately regretted it.
Next, he'd be roped into spending the night, and so many things could happen in the protective cloak of darkness.
"Great! It should be done soon. 'Till then," I want you to bend over for me," You ever play Mortal Kombat? Bet I could kick your ass."
Dean must still be grooming him, trying to build up that sense of comfort. Castiel promised himself that he'd research grooming topics later, to get an idea of what to expect.
He took the controller Dean handed to him, watching the alpha set the game up.
...
Cas sat awkwardly at the table, watching as the nice-smelling omega plated the food for them.
"There you go, sweetie," She said kindly when putting a moderately full plate in front of him.
She seemed sweet, and Cas wondered what they did to her. They must only leave bruises where no one will see, and Castiel almost wanted to cry at the thought of this beautiful omega getting hurt so much.
She didn't deserve it.
No one did.
When Dean's mom didn't wince while sitting down, Cas felt marginally better. At least they weren't too rough. Or, at least they weren't recently.
"This looks great, mom," Dean said happily, digging in as his younger brother made a noise of agreement, already shoveling food into his mouth.
Mary looked on fondly, smiling when John took her hand. "Slow down, Sam. You're gonna choke."
And then she turned those beautiful green eyes onto him.
"So, Cas, how do you and Dean know each other?"
"Mom!" Dean groaned, flushed in what Cas thought was embarrassment.
"What? I just want to know!" She defended, turning back to him with an exasperated roll of her eyes.
If Cas wasn't aware of the abuse, it would almost be nice. Like normal family banter.
But the omega must be putting up a front for their guest, as to not alert anyone else to the horrors of her day-to-day life.
"We have Anthropology class together, ma'am." He said shyly, looking down towards his plate, hiding from all the people -mostly alphas- staring at him.
"Anthropology, huh? Tell me, is Dean a good student?" Cas looked up, to see Dean blushing and trying to curl into himself as she elbowed him playfully in the ribs.
"Mom." Mary laughed loudly, shaking her head.
"I'm just kidding."
...
As soon as Cas got home, he immediately got on his phone to research grooming tactics.
He scrolled down a few articles, checking off what Dean did.
They pretend to be someone you can trust, so you put your guard down.
Check.
They are very charming and present themselves as people who are the answer to all your needs.
Check.
They appear to be very empathetic – mirroring you and showing a great amount of “seeing’ you and validating your felt needs and experiences.
Half-check.
Groomers act very innocuous and light-hearted.
Check.
They pretend to be your protector, acting outraged if anything bad happens to you and promising to protect you from all evil.
Not yet.
Castiel put his phone down with a heavy heart, and that night, he fell asleep with a sense of uneasiness filling his body and one thought in his mind.
An alpha was trying to groom him.

Mentions of grooming
Mentions of mpreg
So, I've done a lot of research on grooming prior to this story, just because I follow a lot of true crime and this is a heavy part of human trafficking. I got this particular information from PsychCentral. The article is called How Victims are groomed by Abusive Predators if you're interested in doing your own research. And, just to clarify, if someone does some of these things, they may not be grooming. They may just act like this. Dean is not grooming Cas. He's just a good alpha. And I'd never let him abuse our sweet boy. If you suspect that you, or someone you know, are being groomed, do research and talk to a professional. Grooming is a very dangerous manipulation tactic. And their main goal is to wrap you in a false sense of security and comfort before other forms of abuse start. Another big tactic of grooming is gaslighting. If any of these things have happened to you, just remember it's not your fault.
I LIVE for comments. Please, please, please feel free to leave one. I don't bite. That hard.

Dean was surprisingly helpful on the project, so they got it done almost three days early.
It was refreshing, sharing the workload with someone else, and not having to do it all himself. No matter how wary he was of Dean, he had to admit that the alpha was very smart.
And he hated admitting it.
So, after they finished, he figured he could just sit in peace, no longer having to socialise with him.
But he was quickly mistaken.
...
"So, Cas, what kind of movies do you like?" Dean asked, and when Cas looked up, the young alpha was grinning at him.
Castiel frowned, eyebrows pulling in for a confused furrow. "What is the importance of knowing my movie preferences?" He asked uncomfortably, shifting a little in his seat.
"Dude, it is the most important question ever. You can tell everything about a person knowing their taste in movies! So, c'mon. What is it?"
Cas let out an annoyed sigh, rolling his eyes. "Right now my favorite is the Harry Potter series. I watched it recently after it was recommended by a friend."
Dean's grin widened, which didn't seem possible. Cas was sure that had to hurt his cheeks.
Not that he particularly cared about Dean and his possible discomfort.
"I love Harry Potter! Whoever recommended it seems awesome."
Cas just nodded because Charlie was absolutely awesome, and Cas' first true friend. And he didn't particularly want that ruined by Dean.
"How about music? What kind of music do you like? For me, it's classic rock all the way. Nothing compares to some Metallica and Led Zeppelin."
Cas let a small smile slip because he was very passionate about music. "I like melodic tunes with meaningful lyrics. Or jazz. Jazz is nice and comforting. My favorite song, though, is The Bee Song by Arthur Askey." Cas got a dreamy, far-away look on his face when he thought about the tune. It just made him feel... so happy.
He was too busy in his little trance to notice Dean looking at him with adoration written all over his face.
...
The next day, Castiel was walking to his locker to get his anthropology stuff, minding his own business.
His textbook was at the bottom, trapped in by the edge on the side of the locker. He leaned down to get it, which, unnoticed by him, caused his butt to stick out slightly into the walkway, but not enough to disrupt the people around him.
He thought nothing of it until he felt two large hands grabbing at his ass, causing him to tense and a sharp wave of fear to wash through him, his scent immediately souring with it.
His first thought was Dean. The alpha must've finally gotten fed up with the art of grooming.
But then the person behind him spoke, and Cas finally got a whiff of the rotten smell. He immediately recognised it as Alistair.
"Such a nice ass there, pretty omega bitch," He leaned close, grinding his crotch against him, and tears prickled at Castiel's eyes when he felt the hard cock poking his ass, even through all the layers of clothing.
And then there was the loudest, most terrifying sound Cas had ever heard.
An angry alpha's roar.
It was so loud he was surprised the lockers weren't shaking with it, and that his ears weren't sore.
Alistair's hands -and crotch- were suddenly gone, and Cas quickly turned around, hiding his ass from all the others, and watching the scene that played out before him.
He quickly pieced together that it was Dean who had roared and Dean looked livid, eyes a deep, alpha red as he punched Alistair in the face with a sickening crunch.
"If I see you so much as look at him again, I will do so much worst. I swear to God, I'll make you wish you were never fucking born." Dean snarled, teeth bared, showing off his elongated fangs.
"It's his fault for being a fucking knot-tease!" Alistair squawked indignantly, causing Dean to growl, fist rearing back before a teacher, one Cas didn't recognize, was escorting Alistair away from the scene as another teacher told everyone to get to class.
Once the other alpha was out of sight, Dean cursed under his breath and made his way over to the frightened omega.
"You okay?" He asked softly, even though Cas clearly wasn't. He was shaking and teary-eyed, scent reeking with pure, unadulterated fear.
"How about I walk you to the office so you can get someone to come pick you up?" Dean asked kindly, teeth back to normal.
That sure as hell got Cas' attention, and he was shaking his head vehemently. He didn't need to bother Michael just because he was dumb enough to stick his ass out. He was practically presenting. He had definitely asked for it.
"D-don't want to go ho-home," He whimpered, the tears finally starting to fall.
He was so fucking weak.
Such a stupid omega who hadn't learned his place yet and had to have some alpha swoop in to save him because he was dumb enough to inadvertently tease an alpha
"Hey, hey," Dean soothed, and Cas didn't even flinch when he used his big thumbs to wipe away the tears. "It's okay. You're okay. Why don't I go talk to Mr. Fuller and we can sit somewhere quiet, yeah?"
And as much as Castiel hated himself for it, his inner omega was begging not to be left alone, so he nodded, unable to meet the alpha's eyes.
"Okay, Cas. Come on," Castiel practically clung to Dean's arm as they walked towards their classroom.
Castiel waited outside as Dean went in, bringing Mr. Fuller up to date with the situation and asking that they be excused.
Cas felt so violated and disgusted. He could still feel Alistair's harsh fingers digging into his cheeks, making more tears well up.
Why couldn't his body just be his?
And then he realised one more thing before Dean came back out.
They pretend to be your protector, acting outraged if anything bad happens to you and promising to protect you from all evil.
Check.

Chapter Text
Dean led them to a secluded part of the school, to a hidden classroom. He only knew of the place because a teacher had shown it to him last year when he was getting overwhelmed by the crowds.
It was more for staff than actually hidden, but if a student did know about it, that meant they had been let in on the location. So if a teacher came in, they wouldn't be questioned.
There were some bookshelves lining the walls, a few couches, bean bags, and small tables spread throughout the room.
"W-where are we?" Cas asked timidly, and Dean smiled kindly at him.
"It's a staff room, but don't worry. We won't get in trouble." Dean led him over to one of the couches, sitting down with the omega.
"Do you wanna talk about what happened?" He asked softly, Castiel pressed thigh to shoulder next to him.
"There's not much to talk about... it's happened before, and it'll happen again. I'm an omega. It's how the world works."
...
Castiel was surprised that he was opening up at all to Dean, but he was just so tired. Tired of alphas taking pleasure that he wasn't willing to give. Tired of alphas walking all over him. Tired of being all alone. Just tired.
So, if Dean was just going to use him, why not get something out of it? Such as finally talking about how he felt.
The alpha didn't seem too keen on sharing him, so it wasn't likely he would tell someone about this.
And Cas needed to get it off his chest.
Needed to finally tell someone about what happened to him, even if Dean would most likely use it against him in the near future.
What was the use of hiding it anyway? Maybe Dean wouldn't want him if he found out he had already been used.
"I don't fucking care if that's how the 'world works'. Doesn't mean you, or any omega, for that matter, should be sexually assaulted just because alphas decided they owned the world. Guess what? We don't. And the sooner people realise that, the sooner omegas won't feel so unsafe and discriminated against." Dean smelled angry, and Castiel wondered if it was normal for alphas to be able to manipulate their scent to fit what they wanted.
"And what do you mean it's already happened? Has he done this before?"
And holy shit, now that he was about to say it, he felt nervous. He felt scared. But he was determined, and Cas was nothing if not stubborn.
He had stayed silent long enough as it is.
Even if telling Dean didn't mean anything and may be turned against him, he needed someone else to know.
"Not him. Someone else. A while ago."
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Dean asked softly, rubbing Cas' shoulder. And Castiel felt an odd sense of comfort from the gesture.
He took a breath, bracing himself, because he was about to say the words, out loud, for the first time.
"Um- I was- uh, I was thirteen," Jesus, this was harder than he thought it should be. He had lived it, saying it shouldn't be nearly as painful.
Clearing his throat, he tried again. "I was thirteen and he, the alpha, was sixteen, lived next door. He would start sneaking into my bedroom and he- he-" He had to take a moment before forcing the words, "He did stuff to me." Out in one big breath.
Castiel felt so ashamed, and he really shouldn't have been surprised when he felt the familiar wetness around his eyes.
"Cas..." Dean said in a shaky voice, and Cas couldn't take it. He just couldn't take it.
Because he had kept that secret to himself for three fucking years. And now that someone else finally knew, he started crying like a little baby, turning to hide his face in Dean's shoulder.
He was surprised when the alpha put an arm around him, pulling him closer. Dean was releasing protective and comforting pheromones, and Cas greedily breathed it in.
"I know it's stupid. It's so fucking stupid to tell you, of all people, the alpha who's trying to groom me. And, eventually, you'll do the same. I know you've been waiting to. But I needed to tell someone. "
Cas should have just shut his mouth, he knew. But after talking about his past experience, his mouth was just throwing everything out there, making Dean pull away.
He probably just angered the alpha and was about to get the beating of a lifetime, all because he couldn't fucking control his mouth.
"You- you think I'm trying to- to use you?" Dean asked, and he actually sounded hurt.
Cas looked up, confused, even more so when he saw that confusion mirrored on Dean's face.
"Cas, I'm not. I don't want to hurt you. Or any omega. I- if I had known that's what you were thinking, I would have done a better job at making my intentions clear. I just want to be friends with you." Cas stared at him, biting his lip.
He knew Dean was lying, he did. But at the same time, Dean had protected him, fought off another alpha's unwanted advantages.
And this alpha was obviously trying to make him feel safe, waiting to strike when he least expected it, but maybe Dean wouldn't be the worst alpha to use him.
It was gonna happen anyways, from Dean or someone random, so he might as well choose one who wouldn't try to share him. One who even acted decently at times.
Maybe it wouldn't even be all that bad. Dean wasn't the worst smelling, and he put on the act of being nice to Cas.
If he was gonna be taken against his will, it may as well be by a semi-friendly alpha.
...
Dean was absolutely appalled when Castiel told him he thought he was being groomed. By Dean. He felt appalled and absolutely sick.
It made sense with all the subpar alphas in his life, so Dean tried not to take it personally, but he was so fucking relieved when Cas nodded, showing he understood that Dean wasn't trying to take advantage of him.
"Friends," Cas said softly, "I'd like that."
And, shit, now everything kind of clicked. Cas' scent would sometimes turn fearful, or his eyes would be filled with this haunted kind of look, or he'd get really nervous out of the blue.
And what Dean had written off as shyness, maybe paired with social awkwardness, was actually Cas thinking Dean was going to- to- Dean couldn't even think about what Cas had thought for months.
And, fuck. Maybe him trying to switch partners had nothing to do with Dean, but more with his subgender.
The fact that Cas had just planned to take it? Broke Dean's fucking heart. And suddenly he was the one about to cry because this omega was so strong, even with the shithole that has become of his life.
Dean slowly maneuvered Cas -who went along without protest- so his head was in Dean's lap, eyes focused on his face.
Dean just smiled sweetly, threading his fingers through the omega's hair.
...
Cas had almost expected Dean to use him then, which would have been pretty shitty, but he just started playing with his hair, gently raking his nails over Cas' scalp, which felt so fucking good.
Castiel got the sudden, ridiculous, urge to purr. He shoved it down, because he's never done that before, and didn't totally feel safe anyway. He had to still be on guard because any moment could be the moment Dean drops the charade.
But he was content to just lie there, letting his hair be messed with.
He could definitely feel the weight of the day melting away with each steady stroke of Dean's fingers.
Notes:

-Mentions of groomingWhat'd you guys think?? Please, please, please leave comments. I love them.
Also, please let me know if I missed any triggers.
And, I know it may seem completely out of character for Cas to just randomly start trusting Dean, but remember that he doesn't trust alphas, or Dean. He's just resigned himself to the fact that he will be assaulted, no matter what, and he decided it'd be better to be assaulted by someone who fended off other potential predators. We still have a long ways to go before Cas starts to truly trust Dean.

Chapter Text
Ever since Cas had told Dean about his past experiences a little over two weeks ago, Dean has been trying to act as non-threatening as possible.
He didn't want the omega to be uncomfortable around him, to just wait around, wondering when he was gonna be used.
They finished their project last week. At school. Which meant that Dean hasn't had a valid reason to invite the boy back to his place.
And his room no longer held any traces of the omega's scent.
It was Thursday when he finally decided fuck it, and sat down in Anthropology class, turning to the boy.
"Come over today. After school. I can take your brother home for you like last time."
Cas looked at him with his adorable tilted head, eyes squinting, as if he were trying to detect suspicious undernotes. And, yeah. Dean should have been clearer.
"Not for what you're probably thinking. I just wanna hang out. Plus, I finally got Unravel Two, and I need someone to play with." Dean gave his most innocent smile, and his scent exploded in triumph when Cas nodded his consent, relaxing into his seat.
...
Castiel hated this. He's been trying to fight it. But every day it got harder and harder to remember why he had to.
He was starting to like Dean. As in, I want to be friends with you and spend a lot of time together, kind of like.
But Dean was an alpha.
Albeit, a kind one. He was also sweet. And funny. And smart. Oh! And sometimes he did this cute thing where he'd- Stop it, Cas. He's an alpha. Not your friend.
All too soon, the school day was over and Cas nervously made his way to the parking lot, immediately spotting Dean's sleek car, the most beautiful one in the parking lot.
He jumped when Dean tapped his shoulder from behind.
"Fancy meeting you here," Dean said with a cocky smile, moving forward to unlock the doors.
"You told me to come here...?" Cas was confused, but he got the sense that he had said something weird when Dean looked at him in amusement.
"Get in, you dork." He shook his head with a secret smile, getting in the driver's side.
Castiel furrowed his brow but listened nonetheless, sliding into the passenger seat.
"We gotta get Sammy as well. He'll be pissed if I make him ride the bus again." Dean gave a smaller smile this time, one that was filled with so much love, Cas wanted to tear up.
He didn't want to seem sappy, but what would it feel like to have that smile pointed at him? For him.
It'd probably make him really happy...
...
Dean was really confused when suddenly the car was filled with the scent of yearning omega.
What was going on in that pretty little head of Cas'?
Dean spared a glance at Cas, trying to decipher that look on his face, but before he could come up with any sort of answer, they pulled up to the middle school, and Cas' scent completely changed.
Gabriel came running, but Sam was nowhere to be found. Rolling his eyes, Dean turned off the car. "Gimme a minute, Cas. Gotta find my pain in the ass little brother."
Cas didn't respond, too busy talking to Gabriel, and Dean gave one last fond glance before going to find the baby sasquatch.
Dean found him at the front of the middle school, talking to some blonde girl, and looking very uncomfortable.
Dean grinned, getting close enough to hear.
"-rty. I think it'd be fun if we went together. Maybe we could even grab some food beforehand?"
Dean was dying of laughter on the inside. Sam was being asked out for the first time! It was even funnier because it looked like he didn't want to be having this conversation in the slightest.
"J-Jess, I think you're ver-very sweet, but I, uh, I can't. Sorry." And then he ducked his head to avoid 'Jess's' disappointed look.
When he looked back up, his eyes landed on Dean, and Dean actually started laughing when his face immediately turned a bright red.
"Gotta go," Sam mumbled before scurrying past both Jess and Dean, eyes on the ground, and if Dean was still an immature child, he would trip the boy. But even he knew he was too old for that, unfortunately.
Dean gave the girl an apologetic shrug before following Sam back to the car, taking some mercy out on him and not mentioning what just happened.
"Finally!" Gabe shrieked, opening the door for Sam to climb in, and Dean grinned, walking over to the driver's side.
"Hey, Dee?" Dean hummed in acknowledgment, waiting until he was done backing up before locking eyes with Sam in the rearview mirror.
"Can I go to Gabe's? You could pick me up when you take Cas home."
Dean licked his lips, glancing at Cas, then the road, then back to Sam.
"That's not really up to me, bud. You gotta ask Cas." He heard the omega take in a sharp breath, and no matter how curious Dean was about it, he wasn't gonna ask in front of Gabe and Sam.
"Pleeeaaase, Cassie?" Gabe whined, and Dean saw Cas' little smile out of the corner of his eye.
"Sure, I'll text Michael to let him know." Gabe let out a squeal of excitement, and Sam must've thought Dean looked away because he leaned over and kissed Gabe's cheek, and holy shit. They were going to discuss that later.
Cas didn't notice because, true to his word, he was texting someone, and Dean couldn't wait to tell him that their brothers were experiencing cute puppy love.
"Make sure to get your homework done, Sam. Don't just mess around." Okay, it wasn't necessary to tell Sam of all people to do his homework, but it was still Dean's job as the older brother.
"Yes, Dean," Sam said, exasperated, and Dean grinned.
They got to Cas' house a few minutes later, and Dean watched in amusement as Sam and Gabe bolted out of the car and to the door, hurrying inside.
"They were excited," Cas noted, and Dean scoffed.
"Yeah, I'll bet."
"What do you mean?" Just to make sure, Dean turned his head, and yep, there was that adorable head tilt.
"I'll tell you when we get to my place."

Chapter Text
Dean soon parked in his driveway and Cas looked around, a little wary. Sure, the last time he came here wasn't so bad, but what if this visit was different?
What if Dean finally showed his true self?
Cas was nervous, but he did his best to rein in his scent. Because as fucked up as it was, he didn't like to see Dean sad -pretending or not- and that heartbreakingly crestfallen look always appears when Cas is doubting his intentions.
He got out of the car when Dean did, following the older boy into the house.
"I know I said I wanted you to play a video game with me, but we don't have to. Whatever you want to do." Dean shrugged, taking his leather jacket off and hanging it on one of the many hooks lining the wall.
"I have Scrabble if you wanna play that," Dean raked his eyes over Cas' form, causing the omega to shift minutely. "You just look like the type to play Scrabble ."
Cas blushed because he absolutely loved that game, and it was a little embarrassing that Dean could just tell.
"I, uh, I'd like that." He let a small smile break loose, and the one Dean returned was almost too bright to look at.
"Great!"
...
"No, it's not." Cas huffed, crossing his arms, and staring the alpha down, too caught up in the argument to realise he probably shouldn't try to intimidate an alpha.
"Yes it is!" Dean squawked indignantly, crossing his arms as well, mirroring Cas.
"Dicknose is not a word!"
"Dicknose is too a word! You're being one right now!" Dean argued, making Cas glare daggers at him, causing Dean to burst out laughing, even as he tried to remain serious. "Well, you are!"
Cas threw a pillow, hitting Dean square in the face, which only made the alpha laugh harder.
Even Cas was starting to get amused, trying to contain his smile and failing miserably.
"I'm not counting it, Dean." He said with an air of finality, and Dean sobered up quickly.
"Oh, c'mon, man! Fine, fine. You're no fun." Cas would have been hurt if it weren't for the smile still planted on Dean's very beautiful fa- Whoa, whoa wait. Where the hell had that come from?
"You can get rid of dicknose, but not dick." Dean said, taking nose off the word, and Cas rolled his eyes so hard it almost gave him a headache .
...
Cas was having so much fun, he never even realised they were home alone until he heard two pairs of footsteps downstairs, tilting his head at Dean.
Without having to verbalize anything, Dean explained. "Mom and dad just got home from their early date."
Cas furrowed his eyebrows because mom had never taken dad out on a date. Ever , from what he could tell.
Alphas owned omegas. Even more so when mated. Dates were not necessary.
"What's going on in that cute lil head of yours?" Dean asked softly, and Cas looked at him in confusion.
"My head is... cute?"
Dean blushed, looking down at the floor now. "I mean, that wasn't really the point, but... yeah. Everything about you is cute, actually." Dean shyly lifted his eyes, watching Cas' face for a reaction, and Cas was even more confused.
Compliments were also unnecessary. And he's never seen an alpha get all shy like Dean just did.
"I... do not understand you." He admitted, making Dean snap his eyes back up to his. "You are an alpha, this I am sure of. But... you do not act like an alpha."
"What is an alpha supposed to act like, Cas?" Dean asked, in the softest voice Cas has heard him use so far.
"Controlling. Dominating. Self-centered. They do not compliment omegas. They do not take omegas out for dates. They do not..." Cas trailed off, his face suspiciously hot, and eyes wet.
"They don't what, Cas?"
"They do not love omegas." He closed his eyes, ignoring the tear that fell.
He shouldn't be so sad right now. He already knew these things. It was stupid to expect an alpha to act any differently.
And yet... he finds himself wishing to be loved.
"Cas, hey," Dean moved closer, gently taking ahold of Cas' face, lifting it so their eyes could meet.
Then, for the second time since they've met, he wiped the boy's tears away.
"Not all alpha's are the same. And I'm really sorry that all your life you've only encountered the assholes. But my mom, my dad, they raised me to love omegas. To cherish them. And other alphas were raised the same way. Albeit, not the majority. But you'll find one of the good ones. One of the alphas who will love, cherish, and respect you."
Cas almost believed him. Could Dean truly be a good alpha?
God, he wanted to believe so badly that it could be true .
But it was unreasonable. He's been shown time and time again that omegas are more of a burden to alphas than anything else. That they were only good for fucking, cleaning, beating, and breeding. Used to be thrown away later.
His heart yearned for Dean though.
And to some extent, so did his mind.

Chapter Text
Dean convinced Cas to stay for dinner again, this time for pot roast. This time, however, it was just the four of them, Sam still with Gabe.
"It's nice to see ya again, Cas." John said with a charming smile -definitely where Dean got his-, clapping the omega on the back as he walked by.
"Yeah, Dean hasn't shut up about you since the last time you were here." Mary added, and Dean burned a bright red.
"N-no," He mumbled, and both his parents laughed loudly at his embarrassment, Cas looking at him with that adorable head tilt.
Dean just hid his face to avoid the omega's curious eyes.
Once the embarrassment passed, Dean flashed Mary his cutest grin with a, "This is amazing, mom." And Mary returned a warm smile at the praise.
"I'm glad someone enjoys my cooking," She teased, throwing John a pointed look.
John playfully growled, which caused Cas to startle slightly. Thankfully, only Dean seemed to notice. And, okay, maybe this was pushing all kinds of boundaries, but Dean grabbed ahold of Cas' hand under the table, threading their fingers together. Cas squeezed his hand, offering a grateful smile before starting to eat again.
Dean bit his lip against his smile, the weight of Cas' hand in his making him happier than he could properly express in his meager vocabulary.
...
Dean held Cas' hand all through dinner and dessert, and his stomach was alive with butterflies the entire time. He was so fucking gone on this omega.
This sweet, gorgeous omega who's been through so much shit, but is still here and able to smile. He was so quickly falling in love with the boy, and though he knew Cas might not ever feel the same, he was still so happy when around him. He just wanted to be with the omega 24/7, which gave him a great idea.
Gnawing on his lower lip, he looked over at Cas doing homework on his bed. Fuck, the sight of Cas looking so damn comfortable and relaxed in Dean's nest really did something to his libido.
Swallowing his nerves, he turned to Cas with what he hoped was a non-threatening smile. "So, I, uh... Fuck, okay. I have a question, and please feel free to say no if you're uncomfortable, ok? I-I was wondering if maybe you wanted to stay the night, possibly?"
Dean didn't want to push Cas too far, too soon, but he really wanted to wake up next to Cas, see that beautiful face of his smoothed out with sleep.
The omega seemed to think it over, which made Dean happy because he didn't want Cas to say yes just because he thought that was what Dean wanted.
"I think... I would be... amenable to that. Where would I be sleeping?"
"My bed?" Dean squeaked, and when Cas narrowed his eyes, the alpha rushed to clarify. "I'm not gonna try something, nor am I expecting anything to happen. It's just... My bed is comfy. And big. And I- we have a guest room, but I thought you might not want to sleep in a strange place alone. I'm here for platonic cuddles, and whatever else you might want. Or don't want. And if you don't want cuddles, or to share a bed with me, that's okay too. Whatever you want, Cas."
Castiel was smiling after his little speech, eyes crinkling at the corners, the blue a bit brighter than usual, like the sun reflecting off ocean waters. Goddamn, he was beautiful.
"I will stay, Dean. And I will sleep in your bed, but only if you promise not to be a blanket hog."
Dean let out a surprised laugh, biting his lip again to try and reign in his ever-growing smile.
"No promises."
God, his heart felt so full it almost hurt.
...
Getting into bed with Dean, an alpha, was nerve-wracking, to say the least. Alpha's have hurt him so much, and getting into bed may as well have been an invite into his body, right? But even after listing off all the reasons this was a bad idea in his head, Cas didn't believe Dean would do such a thing. He was... he was starting to trust him.
And even though his mind was screaming at him that this was dangerous, his instincts, his omega, trusted Dean. He just hoped they weren't leading him astray.
He looked up just in time to see Dean coming out of the bathroom.
And he was naked.
Wait, no. Not naked. He's wearing boxers, albeit tight ones.
Dean was bright red, though, and he didn't look like he was ready to jump Cas' bones, so maybe this was okay?
"I- Sorry, I just don't like sleeping with clothes on... I could grab some, though, if this makes you uncomfortable?"
Cas thought on it, trying to figure out what he felt.
Confused, nervous, a little sleepy. But uncomfortable? Scared? He didn't think so.
Should he be? He was getting into bed with a nearly naked alpha, with no one else around, and with the bedroom door closed.
But if Dean were trying to manipulate Cas, get Cas to willingly let Dean use him, he would have already acted on it, right?
Instead, he protected him from alphas with wondering hands, he held Cas and let him talk about his past, he wiped his tears away when he was sad. And then he laughed with him, played Scrabble with him on his bedroom floor, held his hand when he was nervous, tried to do everything possible to make him feel comfortable. And not once did he try to make Cas feel like his omega status made him willing to advances. He told him the exact opposite, in fact. Told him he deserved to be loved, deserved to be happy, didn't deserve being taken advantage of.
There were so many times Dean could have tried something, but he never did. Never seemed to want to.
Maybe not all alphas were as bad as he thought? At least not Dean.
"I'm not uncomfortable, Dean. Now, will you come to bed and hold me, please?"
Dean grinned, nodding, and then the room was enveloped in darkness as Dean turned off the light on his way to the bed.
Cas felt the mattress dip before there was some shuffling, and then all the noise stopped and Cas could feel that Dean was near, but wasn't holding him for some dumb reason.
Cas huffed, turning over on his side so that his back was turned to the stupid alpha.
"Dean?"
A pause, "Yeah, Cas?"
"I think I specifically told you to get in bed and hold me."
Dean didn't respond for several long moments, and then the blanket was shifting as Dean slowly got closer. He stopped a few inches away, and Castiel rolled his eyes before pushing back, his back plastering to Dean's front.
Dean's breath hitched, and then he was wrapping his arms around the omega, pulling him closer before holding on tight. Cas sighed, eyes closing. Yet they soon snapped open when he heard a noise and fucking hell, Dean was purring.
It was a deep sound that he could feel was reverberating Dean's entire chest, something that Cas felt right down to his very core, and he was pushing out pheromones of happy alpha and calm alpha.
It soothed Cas, made him feel safe enough let out an answering purr, softer than Dean's, but just as affectionate. Castiel wasn't sure he's ever been happier than he was currently, wrapped up in the arms of an alpha he was rapidly developing feelings for.
Notes:
I wrote most of this at work lmao, I hoped you enjoyed! Who knows, maybe soon they'll be together and it'll be a different kind of slow burn, if you know what I mean *wink wonk*
Please, please, please tell me what you thought!
Chapter 12
Summary:
Dean and Cas get a little cozy and domestic on a day off of school.
Notes:
I am in fact not dead. Sorry for the long hiatus. So much has happened. I got engaged. And then I ended an engagement. I found someone who's so much better (honestly, he's very Dean-y from this story) and we've been going strong for a few months now. But anyway, enough about me, here is a chapter I've had sitting around in my drafts for a while.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Waking up to a cock pressed up to his ass was not what Castiel was expecting. It was around 9 am on a Friday, judging by the sun, and there was no school due to teacher's work day. Oh, and there was a hard dick grinding against his backside.
He pushed down the initial wave of panic and studied the situation.
He was still in Dean's arms, the same position they fell asleep in, so it was obviously Dean's dick.
He was still clothed, and from what he could tell, Dean's boxers were still on.
Next, he observed the fact that Dean's breathing was mostly even, a hitch here and there, most likely from the pleasure. But other than that, it was deep and came in slow puffs against his neck.
He was still sleeping, and everything kind of clicked into place.
Morning wood.
Okay, this was normal for teenage boys, especially teenage alphas with an omega in bed. Dean wasn't at fault here, most likely not even knowing he was doing this.
Cas could finally relax, all of the tension seeping out, fight-or-flight thoughts gone. He was okay. This was okay. Dean wasn't trying to hurt him. He was safe.
Slowly, he tried to get out of Dean's arms, but the alpha whined, pulling him closer now. Well, fuck.
"Dean."
Nothing.
Slightly louder now, "Dean." And he felt Dean groan from behind him.
Alphas are so dumb.
"Dean, wake up." He said, once again raising the volume a bit.
Dean groaned again, but this time he graced Cas with a response.
"Don' wan'a. Sleepy," Dean mumbled, hiding his face in Cas' neck.
So. Dumb.
"Dean, I would appreciate it if you would get your dick away from me," His voice held amusement, though. Because after he figured out what was going on, he wasn't all that bothered.
This certainly got a response, though. Dean squeaked, quickly moving away from Cas, and the omega flipped over to look at him.
His boxers were tented obscenely -honestly, he must be big-, but that wasn't what he was paying attention to.
Dean was blushing so hard, Cas was surprised he even had enough blood left for an erection.
"I- I'm so sorry! I didn't mean- Cas you gotta believe- I wasn't trying to-" Cas took mercy on Dean, sending out calming pheromones as he held up a hand for Dean to stop talking, which he did with an audible click of his jaw shutting.
"It's okay, Dean. I'm not upset, or scared. I know you were sleeping. It's rather funny, actually." Cas chuckled, and while Dean was still brighter than a ripe tomato, his eyes didn't hold the fear that they did just moments ago.
Cas was actually glad this happened. Because now he kind of knows for sure Dean isn't going to hurt him. Honestly, the opportunity was right there, but instead of knotting Cas, he backed off, scared that Cas was afraid of him. It quieted some of the doubt in Cas' mind. Dean would rather deny himself an orgasm than hurt Cas.
"I'm still sorry. I'm so happy you aren't angry or scared or somethin'," Dean's blush was fading, although slowly. And when Cas chanced a glance down, he noticed that Dean was now soft.
"I quite enjoyed our time spent sleeping together, Dean. It was very comfortable and... it was nice to be held in your arms,"
Cas looked down with a shy smile, glancing up at Dean through his eyelashes to find the alpha looking at him with an unreadable expression.
They stayed like that for a long time, just staring, until Dean cleared his throat, averting eye contact.
"So, my parents should be gone by now. How about I make you breakfast?" He asked, and Cas warmed considerably. It almost... it almost felt like the alpha was providing for him. And when the fuck did he start wanting that?
When did he start wanting to call Dean his alpha, to have Dean provide for him, to fall asleep in Dean's arms each night, to be loved by Dean?
Fuck, what in the actual hell was happening to him?
"That sounds amazing." And then Dean grinned his special grin at Cas, going over to the dresser and pulling out soft-looking sweats and a faded t-shirt to wear.
...
Dean ended up giving Cas sweatpants and a t-shirt as well and even though his clothes from last night were fine, he didn't protest. This way, he was covered in Dean's scent, and maybe he could pretend he was Dean's...
He currently sat at the kitchen bar, watching Dean as he made eggs and bacon, humming some song Cas didn't know. Everything felt so domestic that he just wanted to cry.
When Dean finished with food, he made both of their plates, throwing some cooling pancakes on there as well.
"I could have made my own plate," Castiel mumbled, face suspiciously hot.
"I know. I like doing it for you, though," And now they were both blushing, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder at the kitchen island.
"O-oh, thank you, then."
The food was unsurprisingly delicious. Dean really was the perfect alpha, wasn't he? Although, a small part of Cas still felt like all of this was an act because no way any alpha was this nice, right?
He wanted to believe it, though. That maybe he could find someone to take care of him and provide and be a good partner, alpha status aside. And maybe that someone could be Dean... But that was too good to be true. Even if Dean were truly nice and not just trying to lure him into a false sense of security, there's no way he'd be interested in Cas. And even if there was a possibility, the omega's past was a surefire way to scare the young alpha off. That's way too much baggage to ever unpack.
"You okay there, buddy?" Dean asked around a mouthful of eggs. And that really should have been disgusting, but it was somehow endearing.
"Oh, yeah. Sorry. Just zoned out a little bit." Dean grinned and it was so perfect and Cas was so fucked. He was one hundred percent crushing on this handsome alpha and that was dangerous. But... also kind of exciting. This feeling was new and Cas could only think about how much he wanted to be in Dean's arms, rubbing against his neck, marking the alpha as his.
These new feelings swirled around in his body, his stomach fluttering in nervous flaps of butterfly wings. How do people deal with this? Seeing the object of your affection and having to be content knowing they were unattainable, destined to just be friends forever. His heart yearned for so much more than just that, though. He wanted everything. Those whirlwind romances that are only reserved for books, sparking the deepest, most primal desires deep within the hearts of omega's all over. The idea of that perfect, too-good-to-be-true alpha.
Dean was so beautiful in his happiness, humming under his breath as he scrubbed their dishes clean, making sure the porcelain was shining brighter than the day it was made. His feminine-like hips swayed to the tune in his head, and Cas found it weird that he could associate an alpha with femininity without it being a lie.
Maybe he could start to believe that Dean was a truly good alpha. This is something that he hoped to not lose. Cas doesn't know if he could survive finding out that this was all a fake sense of security.

Chapter Text
School quickly became more enjoyable. Charlie was awesome, as usual. And this new friendship between him and Dean was both fun and beneficial. Ever since the whole Alistair fiasco, no one dared to even look at Cas, for fear of Dean.
Lunch was the best. Introducing Charlie and Dean had been a great idea. They got along like two peas in a pod, and, even better, both of them adored Castiel.
All in all, he thought everything was going pretty great.
...
Monday was always the worst. After enjoying long weekends spent with Dean, it was back to school and having to learn. Gross. The day was going by pretty normally, albeit slowly. He was currently at lunch, which happened to be his favorite part of the day.
"She did not!" Dean denied, laughing vehemently.
"I swear to god!" Charlie shrieked, giggling uncontrollably. "We were watching the movie she picked out, and the timer for the pizza went off. she looked me dead in the face, said 'this is the worst part', then, with her bare ass hands, she grabbed the oven rack! She screamed so loudly as she pulled the pizza out, with absolutely no mittens in sight!" Dean positively died of laughter, wheezing as he simultaneously tried to catch his breath.
"Oh my god! What a weirdo!"
Charlie grinned mischievously. "I'm seeing her again this Friday." Dean gaped for all but a moment before absolutely losing his shit. Cas watched the interaction with amusement twinkling in his eyes. Dean was mesmerizing when he laughed.
Cas kind of zoned out when he thought of Dean, specifically how much he truly liked the alpha. Just being in his presence was enough to calm Cas' inner omega. It was both terrifying and exhilarating. Each day they spent together made it harder for Castiel to remember why he should be careful around the alpha. He kept trying to remind himself to keep an eye out, just in case. But Dean truly made his omega feel so safe and secure. He was quickly falling for the green-eyed alpha across from him.
...
In fourth hour, Cas felt a weird... something fluttering in his stomach. It was a vaguely familiar sensation, but he couldn't place what it was. It started halfway through the class and only grew more intense as time went on. By the time class was over, the fluttering turned to cramping and a need that he didn't quite understand.
It wasn't until he was at his locker that he figured it out. His suppressants had somehow failed and he realised too late that his heat was starting. He could already feel the slick pooling in his underwear, making it stick to his ass uncomfortably.
As more people came into the hallway, he was soon noticed by alphas. Pressed flat against his locker, he watched as alphas started crowding him, eyes flashing as they inhaled his slick-sweet heat scent.
He could feel the panic rising as he started hyperventilating, eyes tearing up as he smelled all of the alpha arousal. It made his head spin in dizzying confusion. Where were all the teachers?
Just as an alpha got a little too close, hands palming his hips, he smelled a familiar scent of apple and rain, although it had unfamiliar hints of rich chocolate and sugar. He heatedly realised it was the smell of Dean's arousal. It made Cas' head swim in unwanted need. He whined as the heady scent got stronger as Dean rapidly approached.
The alpha snarled as he pulled the hands away that were trying to grope Cas. The omega's vision was swimming as he tried to process all of the overwhelming smells, slick dripping down his legs. How the hell did this happen? He hasn't had a heat in years.
Dean stood in front of him protectively, growling at everyone else, guarding the vulnerable omega. Adults were finally starting to take notice, and they were unsuccessfully trying to break through the crowd of young alpha hormones.
"Can you walk?" Dean's voice broke through his haze, and he whined brokenly in response, trying to nod. But when he went to take a step, his jelly-like legs threatened to buckle under him.
"Okay, okay. I've got you." Dean's voice was deeper than usual from his barely constrained lust.
Cas was swept up into the young alpha's arms and was being carried towards the exit.
The omega was both thrilled and terrified of these new developments. It wasn't going to be long before he was knotted to the alpha. And while his heat brain was silently begging for it, he knew it wasn't what he really wanted. But he was too far gone to fight his instincts.
"Dean, please," He moaned brokenly, both begging to be fucked and let go. He was helpless to resist the alluring scent of Dean and knew control was the last thing alphas possessed. He was going to be taken. He just hoped it wouldn't hurt as much as he remembered.
"Shh, it's okay. I've got you, sweet omega." Dean's eyes were completely red at this point, and Cas knew his were gold in response. He felt a tear slip down his cheek and didn't know if it was from his heat cramps or the situation he was in. Probably both.
They were soon in Dean's car, and Cas' heat was in full swing at this point.
The windows were rolled down, but it did little in ridding the space of pheromones. Dean got them both buckled up, and Cas keened as they started driving.
He could feel himself moving closer to Dean, plastering himself to the teen's side. It was like watching himself in third person. He could see himself doing all of these things that he didn't want to do, but his mind couldn't interfere and stop him. He felt trapped in his own body.
"Cas, baby. F-fuck," Dean moaned as Cas started sucking on his scent gland. "I-I need you to stop, honey. We're almost there, all right? I promise."
Cas started to purr, hand reaching down to palm Dean through his jeans as he rubbed his face against the irresistible alpha, scent marking him.
Dean bucked up into his hand, cursing under his breath as he pushed a little too hard on the gas.
"Shit. You have no idea what you do to me," This time it was Dean whining, baring his neck slightly. "Want you so much, omega. Wanna claim you."
"Please, alpha. Please." Cas was making these aborted little thrusts with his hips, trying to seek some kind of relief. Dean clenched the steering wheel tighter and Cas wished he's put a hand on his thigh instead.
"Touch me, please alpha. Want you to touch me."
Dean took a deep breath in, obviously trying to collect himself. "I can't. I won't be able to stop if I do. Gotta make sure you're safe. Gotta drive." Cas internally thanked Dean for at least not getting them into an accident, even as he heard himself whining, trying to beg the other boy to please touch him.
They pulled into Cas' driveway and the omega immediately started to whine in protest. "Michael's here," He managed to get out.
"That's what I was counting on." Dean said, and Cas didn't understand what was happening.
Dean got them out of the car and Cas refused to leave his side. The alpha had a hand around his waist, helping him walk. They got up to the front door, and Dean quickly rang the doorbell, hoping Michael would get there as soon as possible.
"Knot me, alpha," Cas pleaded, and Dean groaned as his scent spiked. He rang the doorbell again, willing someone to answer. Cas started nuzzling against him, scenting him deeply, and Dean prayed to keep his composure for a few more minutes.
Michael opened the door on the third ring, confused face turned into concern when his beta nose picked up Cas' heat.
"Take him, please." Dean whined, even as his alpha raged at the idea of handing his omega over.
"No!" Cas yelled, holding onto Dean tighter. "Alpha, please." Dean looked at Micheal helplessly, and the beta jumped into action, going to collect Cas.
"Omega, please." Dean said, trying to ignore his inner alpha's roars of protest. "I need you to go with him."
Cas' eyes started to water and Dean's heart broke. "I'll be back as soon as your heat's over." He promised. The omega sniffled brokenly, looking at Dean with wide, teary eyes.
"Here, take this, okay?" He peeled off his leather jacket, handing it over. The omega quickly snatched it, burying his face in the fabric and inhaling. "I'll see you after." He promised again, and Michael finally got the half-delirious omega inside.
Dean exhaled in relief, sitting on the porch step, his back to the closed door. He put his head in his hands and tried to collect himself, ignoring every instinct that told him to run inside and take care of his omega.
He was sitting there for a good five minutes when the door opened again, and Michael came to sit beside him.
"Thank you," He said sincerely, and Dean nodded in response, his throat not willing to get words out.
"I mean it. I know how hard that must have been for you. Not many alphas would have been able to control themselves for that long."
"I care about him." Dean said quietly, looking back down at his hands. "I don't wanna hurt him, y'know? I know Cas didn't really want it. It was just the heat. I couldn't take advantage of him like that." He admitted. The only thing that kept him in line was the feeling of betrayal the omega would've felt. He didn't want to ruin what they had.
"I gotta go but just... Just make sure he's okay, please? I just need to know he'll be safe." His alpha would go crazy if Dean didn't at least know he'd be taken care of.
"Of course. Thank you again." Michael smiled and headed back inside, and Dean finally gathered up enough strength to leave.

Chapter Text
Dean's alpha was going insane by the end of the week. The only hint of relief in his distress was when Sam passed on news from Gabe. Dean felt awful that the two could only communicate via phone. The one time Cas' younger brother came to hang out, there was the faint scent of Mate and Heat clinging to his clothes. John had to physically restrain Dean from bursting through the door to run to his omega.
After his instincts had calmed down after that embarrassing outburst, he sheepishly apologised to Sam for chasing away his boyfriend, even as his little brother vehemently denied that they were dating.
By Friday, Dean was restless. It took everything in him not to pace endlessly.
There was a soft rapping on his door, and he looked up to see Sam standing there, eyes silently asking if he could come in.
Dean just pat his bed and grinned. "What's up?" He asked, making room for the little alpha.
"I have... a question." He said slowly, and Dean could tell this was going to be a conversation he should handle with care.
He gestured for Sammy to continue, and the boy hesitated before carrying on.
"Do you think... do you think two alphas together could work out?" Dean frowned because that was really not what he was expecting.
"I mean, yeah. If two people really love each other, secondary gender doesn't have to matter as much as some people argue. Why do you ask?"
Sam looked at him with hopeful eyes and nodded eagerly at his answer. "Well... Gabe hasn't presented yet. And I'm really starting to like him. I guess... I guess I was just afraid that if he presented as alpha, the two of us couldn't work, y'know? Like, obviously, if he's an omega, there's no trouble. And alpha's and beta's date all the time. I've just never heard of two alpha's together." He admitted shyly, looking at his hands.
"Sam, his presentation doesn't have to change anything. You both care for each other. That's all that matters." Suddenly Dean's arms were filled with lanky alpha as Sam practically crushed him in a hug.
Dean grinned and squeezed his brother back just as tight.
"What about you and Cas?" He asked when he pulled back. "Gabe said he keeps asking for you and won't let anyone near the jacket you gave him. Why aren't you two together? You obviously care for him just as much."
And who the fuck gave Sam the right to be that observant? Although, the alpha had to admit, hearing Cas was possessive over his scent made something sweet and overpowering swell in his chest.
"With Cas, it's more... complicated. His heat is mostly just omega instincts. And he trusts me. That would cause his heat hormones to identify me as a suitable alpha. But when he's more lucid, he won't want all of the things he does right now." Sam didn't push and Dean was very thankful for that. All in all, he had a pretty great little brother.
...
Saturday afternoon saw Dean home alone. Dean dropped Sam off at the park so he could see Gabriel for a few hours, and his parents were out running errands.
Around noon, there was a knock on the front door, and Dean dragged himself off the couch to go check it out.
When he saw Cas on the other side, he barely resisted scooping the omega up in his arms and hugging the life out of him.
"Cas?!" He asked excitedly, looking him up and down just to appease his alpha that he truly was okay.
"Hey, Dean." Cas smiled and subtly scented the air. "Can I come in?" He asked and Dean nodded vigorously, stepping out of the way for him. The fact that this was the first time Cas had come over completely of his own accord wasn't lost on the alpha.
"I, uh... I brought back your jacket." Cas' entire face bloomed in a deep blush and holy fuck was this boy beautiful. Dean took the offered article of clothing, only mildly disappointed that all he could smell on it was detergent. Honestly, he doesn't know what he would've done had Cas' heat scent still been all over it.
The two gravitated to the couch, Dean throwing his jacket over the back before sitting down, a respectable distance away no matter how antsy his alpha was to get closer.
"I wanted to thank you," Cas said quietly, and Dean suddenly snapped back to attention, more than a little confused.
"What? Why?" His brows furrowed and he honestly had no idea what Cas was talking about.
"For... for getting me home. You know... without doing anything. I know just the smell alone must have been tempting, but I was also initiating contact and you still didn't take advantage."
Dean frowned deeply, studying Cas' face, which was full of misplaced gratefulness.
"Cas... you were in no capacity to consent. I would never take advantage of you like that. Or any omega, for that matter. But definitely not you." That felt a little too close to a confession for Dean's liking. He didn't want Cas to get stressed over his stupid feelings of love and wanting to mate.
"I just..." Cas cut himself off, staring at a distant spot over Dean's shoulder, obviously trying to gather his thoughts. "I never thought an alpha could be so... so nice." He settled on nice for lack of a better word. "I've had alpha's take advantage when I was nowhere near heat. I didn't imagine that an alpha would ever care to take my feelings into consideration. Especially when my biology was basically a beckoning." Cas sighed in defeat, looking down and trying to stave off tears.
"Hey," Dean soothed, gently lifting his chin. "Heats are never an invite to anyone unless you consent beforehand. I'm sorry that your past has made you think differently. But I will never do anything you don't want. I would never hurt you like that. I-" I love you "I hope someday you can believe that."
Cas searched Dean's eyes for what felt like an eternity before crumpling into the alpha, folding under the weight of all his memories. Whining in question, he nosed at Dean's neck. The alpha bared it for him and Cas couldn't help it as he scented the alpha deeply, inhaling fresh apple pie and nutmeg. He trusted Dean with everything he was.

Chapter Text
Something felt different. Dean didn't know quite what it was, but he could feel it, crackling in the air like a current whenever he was with Cas. Their relationship was the same on the outside, but there had been some kind of shift. One Dean wasn't sure he understood too well.
Cas seemed to smile a lot more now. Like he was fully relaxed. It wasn't obvious that he had always been so on guard until he wasn't. Dean loved it. It was so easy to coax a full-belly laugh out of the omega. He adored the way Castiel's eyes had started to shine the past few weeks.
Whatever this shift was, it was good, amazing. It happened after Cas went into heat, that much was obvious. But it still left Dean with bated breath, like he expected something to happen any day now. He just didn't know what that something was.
"Hey, Dean," Dean snapped his head up, grinning at Cas who was sitting at his desk. "Would it be okay if I took a nap? I didn't get a lot of sleep last night and I'm exhausted." As if to prove his point, the omega yawned and eyed Dean's bed in longing.
"Yeah, sure. Everything okay?" Dean started cleaning up his mess of textbooks as Cas came over and climbed under the covers, sighing in contentment as he made himself comfy in Dean's nest. The young alpha loved the sight so much it almost hurt not to just lean over and kiss him.
"Yeah. Jus' was thinking a lot last night. Couldn't get cozy enough. Your nest is so much softer." With another low sigh, he nuzzled into the pillow, letting his eyes slip closed. Dean's entire chest swelled with pride, his alpha proudly preening under the compliment. He settled down next to Cas, grabbing his phone to scroll through as his omega rested.
Okay, not his, but Dean couldn't give a rat's ass. He had long since given up on trying to correct himself.
...
Castiel woke up with his face pressed snugly into Dean's chest with said alpha deep asleep. The omega used this to his advantage to study Dean's peaceful face. His freckles looked so vibrant under the fading sun and Cas was entranced by how the older boy's long lashes fluttered as he dreamt.
This moment was perfect and Cas wanted to get lost in it forever. Unfortunately, his stomach had other ideas, rumbling grumpily in protest. Cas pouted down at his clothed abdomen as he felt Dean stir underneath him.
"Cas?" And fuck, the alpha's voice was all sleep rough and beautiful. Cas suddenly had the foolish urge to lean over and kiss the boy right then and there.
His thoughts were rudely cut off by another loud growl from his stomach and that definitely got Dean's attention.
"You're hungry," He mumbled, sleepily trying to sit up, only to realise that he was pinned under 130 pounds of longing. "Uh, Cas. I kinda need you to move if I'm gonna get up." Dean said, smiling widely at the boy on top of him.
"Who said I'm gonna let you get up?" Cas asked in return, trying not to be afraid because he basically just challenged an alpha. Every instinct was telling him to apologize and beg for forgiveness, but he remained still, silently trying to calm his frantic omega. This was Dean. Dean was safe. This alpha would never hurt him.
"Oh, really? Is that so? Guess I'll just have to make you move, then." Dean grinned before quickly flipping them, pinning Cas under his strong body before mercilessly tickling him.
Cas laughed himself breathless, his face a bright, cherry red, eyes gleaming with delight. "Okay, okay!" He squeaked when he could finally talk, only to burst into another fit of giggles as Dean got a particularly ticklish spot on his flank.
He couldn't gather up enough air to speak again, so instead, he took a leap of faith and bared his neck, showing his alpha that he won.
Dean stopped as soon as he made the move, and Cas blushed as the room exploded in a heady aroma of rich chocolate and sugar, Dean's eyes dilating as he took in the sight of Cas, all flushed and submissive.
For a short moment, Cas thought Dean might try and claim him. And for an even shorter moment, Cas didn't think that'd be such a horrible thing. But the alpha pulled himself out of it, smiling dopily as he got off of the omega.
Cas almost whined at the loss. He didn't know what had gotten into him. All he knew was that suddenly being an omega wasn't so bad if it got Dean to look at him like that. All he could remember was when Dean had told him that he would love an omega. Would cherish one. And maybe Cas was crazy, maybe he was just asking to be hurt, but oh god did he want that omega to be him.
"About food," Dean said, seemingly out of nowhere, effectively pulling Cas from his concerning thoughts. "Mom and dad are gonna be late tonight. Some kind of work party thing. We have leftovers or I could make you something. What do you think?"
Castiel vaguely heard himself answer with something along the lines of pasta and then he was following Dean downstairs, almost in a daze, as he tried to figure out what all of these complicated feelings meant for him.
And more importantly, what did they mean for him and Dean?

Chapter 16
Summary:
Dean and Cas spend Halloween weekend together.

Chapter Text
It was Halloween weekend and Cas was staying with Dean the entire time. Gabe was also there, which was great because the omega didn't feel like he was abandoning his little brother at home while he got to have an amazing time with the alpha he was quickly falling for.
Castiel had realised that there was no other explanation for what he was feeling other than love. Knowing this was both terrifying and exhilarating. All of these new feelings swelling up inside of him excited his omega to no end. He just wanted to curl up in his alpha and never leave. But a small part of him -okay, maybe about half of him- was still so afraid Dean would hurt him.
It was stupid and irrational. Dean had already had so many chances before to overpower the smaller boy, but he never did. Instead, he proved time and time again that he was different. That he was good. And respectful. And so damn kind that Cas could cry just from thinking about it.
And even if Dean didn't turn on him, there's still the fact that the feelings wouldn't be reciprocated. Even if Cas thought his personality could lure in an alpha like Dean (it couldn't) there was still the matter of his past. No alpha wants a used omega. It's coded into their blood to want someone who will only be theirs. And Castiel can't offer him that.
So, yeah. He's going through a rush of lovey-hazy feelings that make him want to just roll over and show off his belly while also trying to come to terms with the fact that he can never have what he wants.
But at least they can be friends. He still gets to be close to the alpha, to sleep together in his nest, to feel the warmth and affection Dean always seems to radiate. And as long as he keeps his stupid feelings to his stupid self, he doesn't have to lose the alpha.
...
Gabriel and Sam had taken up permanent residency in Sam's room, binge-watching horror movies and purposefully not bothering anyone so as not to draw attention to the fact that they were totally cuddling. But it wasn't their fault that Gabe got a little scared and Sam just happened to be tall enough to protect him.
Dean didn't mind at all. It gave him and Cas their own privacy. Dean has taken it upon himself to introduce Castiel to all things video games. The poor uncultured omega had never even played Mario Kart before Dean had gotten him under his influence.
John and Mary were at some resort for an extended romantic weekend since neither Sam nor Dean was interested in trick-or-treating this year. Plus, friend sleepovers or lame traditions? The boys easily agreed to the prior when given the choice.
Halloween fell on a Monday this year, which meant no school and a four-day weekend. Dean planned on having a small party, with costumes, candy, and Charlie. But until then, he was planning on spending every moment in the coming days with Cas, and maybe Sammy and Gabe, if they ever stopped hiding.
Apparently, Cas wasn't used to doing much on the holiday. Mostly just taking Gabe out to get candy while Michael worked. And that was just atrocious. Dean hoped to celebrate with Cas properly for the indefinite future. To be honest, he hoped to never have another one without the omega by his side.
"You ready to take a break?" Dean asked, stretching out his sore thumbs as he put the switch controller down.
Cas seemed to contemplate for a moment before nodding his assent, carefully setting his own down on the floor.
"I like Mario," He admitted, smiling at the alpha next to him, hoping to every God out there that his feelings weren't obviously planted on his face. The more he's accepted them, the harder they've become to hide.
"Aha! See, I knew you weren't a lost cause. There is a normal person within you," Dean teased, smirking at his own dumb joke.
Cas thwacked him over the head with the closest pillow, if only to wipe the smugness off his perfect face. It honestly all felt so surreal. Just under a month ago, he would've worried himself sick at just the idea of attacking an alpha, afraid of what would happen to him. But he couldn't help how safe and protected he felt in Dean's presence.
"Oh, you are so gonna regret that, little omega." Dean threatened, growling playfully as he tackled Cas on the bed.
"Say you're sorry!" He demanded, pinning the red-faced boy down, Castiel's arms trapped under his hands as Dean straddled his waist.
"No! I will not!" Cas wailed, uselessly thrashing, trying to somehow throw the alpha off of him. Dean growled loudly, moving Cas' arms above his head and holding them there with one, strong hand as he teased the other under Cas' shirt, along his sides.
"No!" Cas squeaked as he thrashed harder, hoping he could weasel his way out, but it was no use. He was effectively trapped on the bed.
"Say you're sorry!" Dean said again, momentarily pausing his ticklish fingers.
"I will never!" The protest was futile, though. Dean lifted up the omega's shirt, and he was just about to ask the alpha what he was doing when suddenly Dean leaned down and started blowing raspberries on his stomach.
Castiel shrieked before erupting into a bunch of giggles, squirming this way and that to escape his relentless mouth. When he realised there was no winning, he finally relented, trying to surrender through his fits of laughter.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry, alpha, please!" He screamed, and Dean beamed as he pulled back, looking down at his prize.
"I win!" He stated, but soon clacked his mouth shut as he took in the sight before him.
Cas was spread out in his nest, arms pinned above his head, shirt raised to his armpits, showing off perfect, unblemished skin. His neck was bared and his face was bright red, hair all tousled like he just got done with the most unholy of acts.
Dean's breath caught in his throat, and for an agonizingly vague amount of time, they just stared into each other's eyes, panting, almost waiting for... something.
Dean could feel that electricity in the air again, this time stronger, almost overpowering, and all Dean could think was that he wanted to claim this omega. Wanted to take him as his mate and protect him from everything bad in the world.
Cas licked his lips and the movement got Dean's attention and fuck. Castiel's lips were swollen red and spit-slicked, and Dean wanted nothing more than to lean down and capture one between his teeth. He belatedly realised that he still had ahold of Cas' arms, and somehow his other hand had drifted back to Cas' side, where it lay there against his ribs, twitching restlessly.
Dean wanted to explore this boy's body, to take him apart and put him back together again.
That thought finally snapped him out of it because dammit, Cas had already been taken advantage of so many times before and Dean would never, ever do that. Not to Cas. Not to anyone.
He coughed awkwardly, releasing the poor omega and clumsily climbing off his lap, trying to ignore the thrumming under his skin and the throbbing in his pants. He just hoped Cas didn't notice the situation going on below, because he didn't want the boy to get any wrong ideas about his intentions.
"So, uh. It's getting kinda late," Dean rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly as he eyed the clock, "Are you ready for bed?" Yeah, real smooth save dumbass.
Cas stared at him, eyes squinted before he relaxed and smiled. "Yeah. I'm actually kinda sleepy," He admitted, slowly sitting up before going over to his packed duffel for pajamas.
...
Castiel walked into the bright house, toeing his shoes off and placing them neatly next to Dean's boots. He smiled in anticipation of spending the day with his alpha.
Walking up the stairs, he couldn't help but notice how quiet the house was. He briefly wondered where everyone was but then he was in front of Dean's room and nothing mattered anymore because his alpha was in there.
As soon as he crossed the threshold, Cas could tell something was... off. The nest was messy, pillows thrown haphazardly on the mattress, the sheets stripped bare. In all the time they've known each other, Dean has always had a cozy and inviting setup.
The next thing he noticed was the sour scent in the air. Like rotting meat and spoiled milk. It permeated the entire room, overshadowing any trace of apple pie and leather. Dean was sitting on his bed, studying something in his lap, back turned to Cas.
"Dean?" He cautiously took a step forward, trying to block out the alpha stench. It didn't belong here. It was supposed to stay at the townhouse where Cas left it, should only exist in memories. He doesn't understand how it found him here. Didn't like the way it stripped the room of everything good, only leaving behind a dark feeling, one that made Castiel's skin crawl.
"Guess again," And Dean turned around, smiling like the predator he was, except it wasn't Dean. It was Bart. He still looked the exact same as Cas remembered him. Still sixteen and cocky, a dangerous glint in his eyes as he took Cas apart in the worst kind of way with that gaze.
"No... No, that's not possible. You can't be here," He took a step back, every muscle in him tensing up in preparation for flight. He calculated the best escape but somehow Bart was there, in front of him. Castiel didn't know how, hadn't even seen him move.
"Yes, sweetheart. It is. I am. I came back for you Cassie. Came back for that nice little ass of yours. Have been thinking about how it felt around my knot all these years." Cas sobbed, trying to break free of the death grip on his arm. And when did Bart even start touching him?
Cas looked up, ready to beg, when he saw it. Those familiar green eyes. Shining in the light like a forest does under the sun. But, no. That's not right. Bart has blue eyes. Icy cold ones, just on the side of gray. This is the wrong alpha. He had to have been hallucinating. Those are Dean's eyes. Dean would never do this to him.
"I'm going to take my time with you. Break you in all over again. It's what you deserve for leaving me. All these years and you never came back. And here I thought we had an amazing bond."
Castiel was openly sobbing, unable to help it as Bart started pushing him to the floor. "No," He resisted weakly, trying to fight back against the alpha strength, but it was no use. Not when he brought out the alpha voice.
" On your knees, omega. " Cas whimpered as he immediately obeyed, no matter how hard he tried to push against his inner omega.
"That's a good boy," And, wait, no. That's Dean's voice. That's not possible. Cas looked up only to see his alpha staring down at him, freckles so noticeable even as the room seemed to darken around him, all hints of light being squashed out.
"Dean?" This couldn't be happening. It couldn't. Dean wouldn't. He wouldn't!
"Shh, open your mouth for me, little omega. Don't make me ask twice." Tears were freefalling down his cheeks, soaking his face in a salty mess, but he did as asked, closing his eyes so he wouldn't have to see as Dean broke all of his promises.
"I knew you were still my good little bitch," Cas snapped his eyes open and it was Bart there, swimming in his vision. Blue eyes and all. But Cas could see freckles that weren't there before, could smell as the room was enveloped in rich chocolate and fresh pie, sugary sweet.
"Now stay still as I knot your pretty little mouth."
Cas woke up with a shout, clawing at his throat as if he could actually feel a knot, choking on his teary protests.
"Cas?!" Castiel scrambled back as a lamp was switched on, Dean looking at him in startled concern. The omega stared into his green eyes, searching for anything off, anything that said he was about to attack. But all he found was sincerity.
Castiel collapsed into Dean's chest, clutching onto his bare shoulders as he sobbed, no doubt getting Dean's skin all wet and gross. But he was too scared to care, could still see Dean staring down at him, about to take him.
Dean just held onto the omega, rubbing his back and softly shushing him, whining in distress as he tried to figure out what to do. "Cas, honey. What's wrong?"
Castiel crumpled at the nickname, crying even harder, which, at this point shouldn't even be possible. Dean smoothed his hair back, pulling him in tighter. His inner alpha's hackles were raised, trying to identify the threat, trying to protect his omega.
It took a long while, but Cas eventually calmed until he was reduced to sniffling, his face sticky and tear-stained.
"I-I'm sorry. I just, I had a nightmare." He could feel himself tear up again but he pulled it back by sheer force of will. His eyes burned and he was so exhausted.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" And fuck, Dean's voice was just so soft and caring it blew right through Cas' will and he started crying again.
"I- I saw... him. He was here. The alpha. And- and he used his alpha voice except... except sometimes he turned into you and you were going to... to do stuff." Castiel sniffled, hiding his face in Dean's warm skin, subtly scenting him. His smell was as it should be, all apple pie warmth and leather, with hints of a fire crackling in the distance. It calmed Cas' racing heart, helping to put his mind at ease. No matter how real it felt, it was just a dream.
"Oh, Cas," Dean squeezed his arms around the boy, wrapping him in his body and scent.
"It just... it felt so real, y'know? But I know it wasn't. I trust you. I trust that you wouldn't do anything like that." The declaration felt a little too close, a little too personal. He was afraid that if he breathed wrong the alpha would suddenly catch on to his feelings. But Dean just kissed the top of his head, smoothing down the hair where it ruffled.
"I just wanna go back to sleep." Cas admitted, and Dean nodded, unwrapping himself from Cas and laying down. Cas immediately missed the heat. Until Dean pulled him down with him, slotting Cas in his arms so his head nuzzled into Dean, his nose buried in the alpha's scent gland.
"Goodnight, little omega." Cas' eyes opened at the nickname, but he let himself relax again. His brain had twisted it in his nightmare, but Castiel honestly loved it when Dean called him that. Never wanted him to stop.
"Goodnight, alpha."
It didn't take long for Cas to fall asleep, and he didn't have any more nightmares. Was too safe and protected in Dean's strong arms, all wrapped up in that delightful scent, could hear Dean's heartbeat, and feel the rise and fall of his chest. All in all, it was pretty perfect.

Chapter Text
Ignoring the nightmare, the rest of the weekend was perfect. The four of them even went trick-or-treating after all. Charlie couldn't come over, so they called Michael to see if he and Lucifer could take them out.
By Monday, Cas was convinced that he couldn't be happier. Dean was awesome, the only alpha he could never get enough of. Now if only these stupid feelings would go away.
Ever since he admitted to himself that dating Dean would be kind of amazing, it was all he could think about. It didn't help that Dean always smelled like heaven. How could anyone not be in love with him? It was so hard to act normal around the alpha when all he wanted was to crawl into his arms and never leave. Which, okay, Cas actually did that a lot, but it didn't mean the same thing and apparently subtext is actually important.
Cas was currently at Dean's, because that's where he always was these days. Which actually worked out well. Gabe tagged along for Sam and that gave Michael time to be a normal 24-year-old with Luci. Of course, Michael had to meet John and Mary if his little brothers were to be spending all of their time over there. After Mary wholeheartedly said she didn't mind them being there and the more the merrier, he finally started enjoying his alone time. And Cas could really tell that made Michael feel younger.
Dean was at his desk doing homework and Cas was in his nest, studying the contours of Dean's back through his shirt. The way the fabric clung to his body, hugging him in all the right places should be illegal. "This is so boring. Can I stop now?" Dean swiveled around to face Cas, exaggeratedly rolling his eyes.
"That depends. Are you done?" Cas raised an eyebrow, hoping his thoughts weren't splattered all over his face like a canvas.
"Ugh! Fun killer. Can I at least take a break? Pretty please?" Dean gave his best puppy eyes that just melted Cas' heart and this was just so unfair.
"Okay, fine. But only because I'm selfish and want attention." Cas flushed at the implications of what he said. Dean just grinned though and threw himself next to Cas.
"Attention, as demanded. Do you not have any homework today?" Dean was lying on his side, causing his shirt to stretch tight across his chest, and Cas seriously thought his mouth was watering.
"No. Unlike some people, I actually do what I'm supposed to in class."
"Well, it's not my fault you're so irresistible that I can't help but talk to you." Cas blushed so hard, he could feel the heat on his face. He just hoped his scent didn't give anything away. Cas wished he had something witty to say, but all he could do was stare and try not to fall even more helplessly in love.
After about thirty seconds of silence, Dean looked a little sheepish and he was just so fucking cute when he got embarrassed.
"Sorry, was that weird?"
"No- no, it was- I just wasn't expecting that... it was sweet." Now Cas was all embarrassed too and this whole thing was just a mess. "Anyway," Cas' only tactic was to avoid, avoid, avoid. "Maybe less talking to me and more listening to the teacher would do you some good."
Dean pulled out his dazzling smile and Cas was absolutely breathless. How the hell was he supposed to act normal with the way Dean made him feel inside? This was literally impossible.
"But that's so boring! I don't appreciate your sass. It's actually very rude."
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah, really." Dean made a fake offended face and Cas really tried to hold it together, but he couldn't help the laugh that bubbled out.
"I'm so sorry, alpha." The name just kind of slipped out and Dean's eyes immediately hooded while he let out a little purr of affection.
"You should be sorry, omega." Dean's voice was husky and Cas' breath caught in his throat. He would give anything to have Dean call him that as his omega. This was so not going to end well.
...
"Hey, Cas?" Castiel stopped walking, turning around to see Dean catching up to him. The alpha pulled him aside to a dip in the wall so they weren't in the way of other students walking about.
"What's up?" Dean's smell was so much more intoxicating today and Cas instinctively moved a bit closer.
"So, I know we were gonna hang out today, but, uh, my rut's coming and I have to leave early. I'm really sorry."
Cas turned a bright red and suddenly had a great idea. "Okay! Stay right here. I'll be back just give me a second." Cas quickly made his way towards his locker, grabbing a spare hoodie from his bag. Running back to Dean, he handed the fabric over.
"You, um, gave me something of yours for my heat so... I thought maybe you could have something of mine." Now that he said it out loud it felt kind of stupid. But Dean just smiled, cheeks red.
"Thank you, little omega." That name again. Cas felt all warm inside. "Okay, I really need to go. Being around you is, uh, kind of a lot." Dean's eyes flickered red and while Cas' first instinct was to be scared, he knew that Dean would never hurt him.
"See you in a week?" Dean nodded, eyes now a deep red, before taking off.
...
Since Dean couldn't hang out, Cas ended up going over to Charlie's because he just needed to tell somebody.
"So, what are you going to do about it?" Charlie was practically vibrating on her couch at the news.
"Well, nothing. I doubt he even feels the same way. Plus, he's such a great friend. I don't want to mess things up just because I have these feelings." And saying that was so painful, but nowhere close to how much it would hurt if he lost Dean.
"But you guys would be perfect together! Like, cutest couple ever kind of perfect." Charlie was basically shrieking at this point and Cas really loved her.
"Maybe in the future, but I'm not ready to tell him yet." And because Charlie was so amazing, she left it at that and made him watch Harry Potter instead.
...
Cas didn't realise how much Dean affected his life until he wasn't there. Cas hung out with Charlie at lunch and then went home after school to try and find something to distract him from how much he missed Dean.
So far, he has managed to reorganize his entire bedroom and clean his bathroom twice. He didn't know what to do with himself without his alpha.
It had been six long, awful days when he finally got a text from Dean on Saturday.
Dean to Castiel (5:42 PM):
Hey! My rut is finally over. Can't wait to see you again <3
And Cas will admit, maybe he was too excited, but he assumed that was an invitation to come over. Michael knew how much Cas missed Dean, he'd been moping all week. So, Cas got a ride over and just so happened to catch Mary about to leave.
"Hey, Cas! Are you staying over tonight?" With how much time Cas spent at the Winchesters, he became really good friends with John and Mary.
"I think so. Is Dean in his room?" Mary nodded and opened the front door for him before continuing to her car.
Downstairs smelled like incense, clearly a way to chase out the rut. Cas excitedly ran upstairs right into Dean's room, only to freeze on the spot.
The entire area was saturated with rut and alpha orgasm. Cas hadn't even considered the fact that Dean's bedroom wouldn't be cleaned yet. Cas' eyes turned a deep omega gold.
Dean whipped around, nose flaring, eyes turning red in response. They both just stood there, breathing hard, not talking, just unblinkingly staring into each other's eyes.
Cas was the one who broke the trance. "S-sorry, I got your text and just- I just thought-" Cas didn't even begin to know where to start. All he knew was that it smelled so fucking good in there. Cas wanted to get drunk on his scent.
Dean's pupils were dilated and Cas had never really had the urge to kiss someone before, but he really wanted to right now.
Dean still hadn't said anything and Cas noticed that he was visibly shaking.
"Cas," The sound came out choked and Cas' heart lurched.
Dean took a step forward and Cas felt his stomach flip. Everything he wanted was just a few feet away, yet so far out of his reach.
"I'll just, uh, wait downstairs." Cas practically fled downstairs, filling his lungs with the clean air. He had to leave before he did something stupid. Like confess.
Cas just sat on the couch for the forty minutes it took Dean to erase any trace of his rut scent. The alpha then came to join him, but they just sat there in silence for a few minutes. The air was awkward and Cas hated it. This was Dean. His best friend. Talking was always so easy between them. This is exactly why Cas would never reveal his true feelings. It wasn't worth their friendship.
"So... I probably should have waited to text you. I was just super excited, and apparently, so were you." Dean laughed sheepishly and Cas loved the sound of his alpha's happiness.
"I also should have asked. Like you said, also excited. But anyway... movie?" And that's how they skip right past that.
Notes:
I think we're finally getting close to some actual romance!!!!
Chapter 18
Summary:
Dean and Cas go camping.
Chapter Text
Thanksgiving break all but jumped out at Cas. He didn't even realise how close it was until the teachers started talking about it the Monday before. He and Dean had a kind of unspoken agreement that Cas would end up spending most of his time over at his house. And Cas didn't know whether to be nervous or excited or somewhere in between. Of course, he wanted to spend all week with his alpha, but also, he was afraid of what might happen.
Charlie gave him a pep talk of sorts (which was her telling him to 'just admit already you numbnuts') before he went over, but he still couldn't help how anxious he was.
"What's going on?" Dean's sudden question startled Cas back to reality. They were in Dean's car driving towards Clinton Lake. It was warmer than usual and seeing how this was probably the last time the weather would permit it, the two of them decided to go camping for their extended weekend. So, nothing but them, the wilderness, and a tent for the next three days. Cas wasn't completely sure that he'd make it out alive.
"Nothing. What do you mean?" Castiel's heart started to beat just a little faster.
"You smell off. Almost... nervous or something. Is everything okay?" How did he not realise that his scent would give him away? He's such an idiot.
"Just never been camping, is all. I guess I am a little nervous. Sorry." It wasn't a complete lie. He actually was a little nervous. Only he was nervous about the company, not so much the actual camping. Not that it mattered.
"I still can't believe that. This is going to be so much fun. I can't wait. The first thing we've gotta do is set up our camp before night falls." Cas made a hum of agreement, turning towards the window to watch the scenery and try not to think about the upcoming weekend.
...
This was a stupid idea. Cas had no idea how to pitch a tent. Dean had already gotten both of his sides stabilized in the ground and Cas couldn't even figure out his first one. It shouldn't be this hard, Cas is sure of it. Just put the stake in the ground. But it literally wouldn't go in.
"Having trouble?" Cas yelped and turned towards Dean, which effectively caused him to faceplant into the alpha's firm chest. Cas had been so focused he hadn't even noticed the alpha approach.
"It won't go in!" He whined, smacking Dean right on his perfectly sculpted chest when he gave a deep chuckle at the unintended innuendo. "You know what I meant!" Cas couldn't help but laugh as well. Not so much at the joke. More at the fact that Dean's laughter was contagious.
"The ground might be a little harder over here. Let me go get my mallet."
When Dean came back, instead of taking over like Cas assumed he would, he placed the mallet in Cas' palm.
"Here, let me show you," And holy fucking fuck, Dean's mouth brushed against Cas' ear with how close he was, and Cas could feel Dean's entire torso plastered to his back. The alpha smelled delicious, all buttery apple pie and old leather. Cas could do nothing else but drink in the scent greedily.
Dean's fingers slid down Cas' arm before settling on top of his shaking hand. "You want to go gentle, take it slow," Cas' eyes slipped shut of their own accord. Dean's breath tickled his neck and he broke out in a warm shiver.
"Just like this," He helped raise Cas' hand before bringing it down on the peg. "See? It slides in so much easier now," Cas' lips parted and he suddenly couldn't breathe.
All too soon, Dean's warmth was gone and Cas was just left there, blushing and hot all over.
After taking a moment to collect himself, Cas got up and moved to the last side to finish up the tent. The interaction kept playing through his head over and over as he worked, though.
...
The tent was finished, topped with a rain cover and everything. The two sat down for a quick snack of sandwiches before Dean decided it was time to go swimming. It was dusk by the time they were ready, but the alpha assured him that it would be more fun this way.
The water was a little chilly, and when Cas started shivering a bit, Dean waded over to him.
"Are you cold?" Cas could just make out Dean's face with how dark it was.
"Just a little bit." Cas admitted, covering himself with his arms.
"C'mere," Dean opened up his arms and Cas hesitated for just a second before letting the alpha envelop him.
Cas' head rested on Dean's chest and Cas just stood there, listening to his heartbeat, feeling it against his cheek. This moment was perfect. So perfect that Cas feared if he breathed wrong, it would shatter. "Is that better?" Dean murmured. The omega just nodded, not trusting his voice.
Dean gave a content sigh before nuzzling his face in Cas' hair. "You smell so good. My sweet omega."
Cas gasped, heart in his throat. Did he hear that right? Or was he imagining things? It sounded like Dean called him his.
Before he could ask Dean to clarify, it started down pouring. Cas squinted up at the sky, accusatory. Dean laughed, looking up as well.
"Good thing we're already wet," Dean giggled at his own stupid joke, teasing a smile out of Cas as well, even though he was offended that the storm decided to start just then.
"We should probably escape to the tent," Dean said, but they both just stood there, staring at each other. Cas was so helplessly in love. Just as he was about to say it out loud, Dean suddenly grabbed his hand to lead him back to camp.
"Come on, before it gets worse!" Cas laughed gleefully, running ahead to get to the tent first. He heard Dean growl playfully behind him as he took chase, his alpha clearly enjoying the challenge.
Cas ran as fast as he could, making the rain pelt him in the face, but he couldn't be arsed to care.
Dean caught up a moment later, tackling him in the sand just a few feet in front of their tent. They wrestled for a second before Dean ended up on top, pinning Cas' arms to the sides. The omega put up a bit of a struggle, but the alpha was stronger and they both knew it.
They lay there for a second, breathing hard as the thrill of the chase started to wear off. Dean looked at Cas like he wanted to devour the omega and Cas kind of wanted to see what would happen if he did.
Dean's alpha was just under the surface. Cas could tell by the way his eyes flashed red, and Cas just knew his were gold. "Omega," Dean purred, smiling down at his prize, soaking in the victory. Cas wondered what Dean would do if he stopped holding back his instincts and just listened to his inner alpha.
They stayed like that for a few more minutes before Dean seemed to calm down completely, letting Cas go and smiling at him. Cas couldn't help but be slightly disappointed.
"That was fun," Dean said, helping Cas up. "But we should actually go in the tent and out of the rain."
When they got inside, Dean handed Cas a towel before drying off his hair. He looked so beautiful with the water dripping down his face only to trail down his bare chest. "Now, turn around so I can get dressed, you pervert." Dean teased, grabbing clothes out of his duffel.
Cas blushed as he faced away from Dean. The tent was only filled with the sound of rain and wet fabric being shed. Cas tried not to think about the fact that Dean was naked behind him. It took everything he had not to turn around. The thing is, Cas wasn't even interested in sex. He just wanted to see everything the alpha had to offer.
Once they were both in pj's, they decided it was time for bed, both a little worn out by the journey. Cas snuggled up against Dean, head on his chest. "Goodnight, little omega." Dean said, stroking Cas' flank affectionately. His hand left a trail of heat behind.
"Goodnight, alpha." And as Cas closed his eyes, he imagined the two of them exchanging 'i love you's.
...
The weekend went by way too fast. After the first day, nothing else significant happened. They just spent the mornings playing games and swimming before wrapping around each other at night to go to sleep. It was amazing, though. Cas had a great time with Dean and never wanted to leave. They were expected back that evening, so Dean was packing up as Cas went into the woods to pee.
The campsite itself was beautiful. They pitched their tent as close to the lake as they could without sinking in the sand and the surrounding area was filled with woods. The two encountered a few other campers, but not too many over the weekend.
After finishing up his business, Cas was just about to go back to Dean when a god-awful stench filled his nose. It smelled like a gross combination of burning rubber and expired milk. Turning around put him face to face with a much taller alpha whose eyes were a lustful red.
"Omega," The man drawled, his scent thick with oncoming rut. Chancing a glance down made him realise that this alpha was hard and looking for someone to fix that. The omega gulped, eyes darting around, searching for an exit. He knew if he ran that the alpha would just chase him, like Dean did the other night. The only difference is, he's afraid of what would happen if he got caught.
The alpha moved closer and Cas instinctively took a step back, which was a bad idea because he was now pinned against a tree. The alpha kept approaching until he was flush against Cas, hard dick brushing against Cas' thigh.
"Smell so good," The alpha leaned in, inhaling deeply. Cas whined, scared and helpless. The smell filling his nose was revolting and he started to tear up as his panic kept building. He wanted Dean. Wanted to be with his alpha, safe and protected. He didn't want to be in the woods, alone, with a strange alpha who clearly wanted him.
There was suddenly a lump in Cas' throat, making it hard to talk, to call for help.
"Can't wait to have you," His hands grabbed at Cas' skin, clumsily pushing up his shirt and Cas couldn't help but wonder if the alpha was drunk. Dean's done this before, has stroked his sides, pushed up under his shirt, but it didn't feel like this. Didn't make him recoil and want to flee.
"Please," He cried harder, getting more desperate by the second when he suddenly heard an enraged roar. He looked over, eyes as wide as saucers, when he noticed Dean standing in the clearing, teeth bared. Cas went limp with relief, watching as Dean ran up to them, only to tackle the other alpha.
Cas watched fearfully as the two grappled for dominance, rolling around on the ground, eyes dark and angry. The two were growling and Cas heard what sounded like a painful kick to the ribs and then a pathetic whine from the stranger. Dean eventually ended up on top, slamming the guy's head down before letting out an angry snarl, looking like he wanted to rip the guy's throat out.
The older alpha bared his neck, a clear sign of defeat, and Dean let off just enough for the guy to flee, metaphorical tail tucked between his legs.
"Cas?" Dean ran over, one hand immediately cupping his face, the other roaming all over his body, searching. "Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" Cas just let out a sob, burying his face in Dean's neck, drinking in his scent. Soon, it chased out any trace of the other alpha and his rut.
"My alpha. Protect me so well. You're my alpha." Cas purred and just let Dean squeeze him tightly as they stood there, calming down from the threat.

Cas was still shaking a little bit later, undoubtedly due to the adrenaline still wearing off. Dean just held him through it, rubbing his back in a soothing manner. The alpha let out a deep purr, immediately calming Cas' nerves.
"Are you okay, 'mega?" Dean asked, briefly interrupting his deep rumble.
Cas took a moment, thinking it over. He was definitely feeling better, though still scared. It was hard to calm his racing heart, even if his brain knew that he was safe with Dean.
"I'm doing better," He admitted. Because he was. All things considered.
They stood there like that for a few more minutes before Dean slowly pulled back. "Do you think you're ready to go? Everything's all packed up." Cas nodded, about to step forward when Dean's hand on his arm stopped him.
"Wait. Sorry, I just- my alpha-" Apparently deciding it wasn't worth explaining, he cut himself off and pulled Cas closer. Dean rubbed his wrist on Cas' neck and face, a clear scent mark.
"I just needed to do it. My alpha wouldn't let me go without making sure you were covered in my scent." Dean looked embarrassed, cheeks a bit red.
"I love it, alpha. I love that you want to protect me," Cas felt like he was constantly toeing the line of confessing too much. He didn't want Dean to read into it. If he did, it would be almost impossible for him not to know how Cas felt. "Plus, my omega kind of needed the reassurance, I think." He added, trying not to display his emotions on his face like a canvas.
"Okay, well. Now that that's taken care of, we can go." Dean gave a lopsided grin and Cas' entire heart just kind of exploded in his chest.
They walked shoulder to shoulder, so close that their arms were brushing together. At a certain point, Dean just grabbed Cas' hand. It fit perfectly in the alpha's and Cas was in serious danger of just melting into a little gooey puddle.
When they got to the car, Dean opened up the door for the omega, making sure he was safely tucked inside before closing it and going over to the driver's side.
"Do you wanna pick the music, Cas?" That's how much the younger boy meant to him. He'd even let his omega control the radio. (Dean has stopped trying to correct himself at this point. There was no use fighting his inner alpha. He really had to start choosing his battles.)
"I like yours," Cas said, a little secret smile playing on his face. He loved it when Dean started singing to songs that he liked. It made his heart feel a light.
...
When they got back to the Winchester residence, Gabriel was waiting on the couch for Cas.
"Cassie!" He screeched, running over to hug his older brother. "I missed you," He admitted. Castiel will admit, he got a bit emotional at that.
"Wow, Sam. You see that? That's what little brothers who actually love their older brothers do." He teased. Sam slapped his chest, and Dean pretended to stumble back from the shock.
"How rude!" Dean complained, making Sam giggle.
"I missed you," The little alpha admitted, giving Dean a tight hug, even trying to lift him up a bit.
"We should watch a movie!!" Gabriel explained, looking between the two.
Cas announced his agreement, so the two started conspiring over which movie they should make the others watch.
"Where's mom and dad?" Dean asked, watching Castiel fondly. He was so smitten, it was stupid.
"Getting pizza. They said they were hoping to be back before you got home, but it's probably busy." Dean hummed his agreement.
"Well, popcorn until then!" He said loudly, going into the kitchen to make them buckets.
Sam decided to join in on the conversation happening between the Novak's.
"Lord of the Rings!" Gabriel whined, giving puppy dog eyes.
"Nooo, we always watch that," Cas replied, fake-glaring at Gabe. "And those puppy eyes won't work on me!" He huffed, crossing his arms. But Sam noticed how he avoided looking at Gabriel in the face.
"What about Bumblebee?" Sam suggested, causing Gabriel to aggressively nod.
"I've never seen that," Cas conceded, knowing that he was already outnumbered.
Dean came out a few minutes later with popcorn while Sam was setting up the movie. "What are we watching?" He asked, going to sit next to Cas, who was currently snuggled up with Gabe under a fluffy blanket.
"Bumblebee!" Gabriel chirped, head on Cas' shoulder. The omega was running his fingers through Gabe's long hair, causing Gabe to let out a little purr.
"Oh, I love that movie!" Dean enthused, handing Sam his popcorn bucket when the younger alpha came to sit by Gabriel.
Gabe moved to snuggle up to Sam instead, and Dean had a hard time not saying anything about how cute they were.
Cas was free now and Dean was struggling to keep a respectable distance from him. It was even harder when the omega let out the cutest gasp when Bumblebee lost the ability to talk. "Will he be okay?" Cas whispered. Okay, no one could blame Dean when he caved and threw an arm around the poor omega.
"He'll be fine," Dean promised. The omega snuggled in closer, laying his head on Dean's chest.
"I hope so."
...
Dean and Cas ended up staying awake until midnight. About fifteen minutes into the movie, John and Mary got home with pizza and joined the boys in watching the movie. When it was over, the couple went to bed and the pairs left over went to their respective bedrooms.
Dean knew Gabe and Sam were already sleeping because he went to check on them a little while ago. So it was just the two of them awake, laying in bed together, whispering in the cover of darkness.
"I think I'd want to do something to help people," Dean said, answering Cas' questions about the future. "I don't know what, yet. I just wanna make a difference. Or be a mechanic. There's just a lot of options," He admitted, worrying his bottom lip over the idea. "What about you?" He asked, stroking Cas' back. The omega was lying with his head on Dean's chest, his leg thrown over the alpha's own. It was perfect.
"A writer, I think. Or maybe a journalist. I don't know if there's a difference. But definitely something from home. Being around too many people makes me a bit nervous."
"You should write about me. It could be titled, 'The sexiest, most handsome alpha on Earth'." Dean teased, causing Cas to snort before erupting into quiet laughter. It felt wrong, somehow, to be loud in this fragile moment.
"I'll keep that in mind," He said, smile evident on his face.
"Okay, I've got one. What's your biggest fear?" Dean asked. "I'll go first. I think being blind would be mine. I mean, not being able to see the beauty around me? That's really scary."
Cas paused for a moment, considering if he should tell Dean what he's always been afraid of.
Deciding to take a leap and trust the alpha with everything he had, he worked up the courage to answer.
"Being alone," The words barely left his throat and Cas was afraid that Dean might not have heard him. "I want a family someday. I don't think about it much because I know I'm not what an alpha looks for in a mate. I just... sometimes I wished I could be looked at like that." The air was so still, you could hear a pin drop. Cas could barely breathe through the tension, worried about how Dean would perceive that admission. It didn't help that Cas had this unbearable feeling that everything was about to change. Their relationship lately had been taking a turn, one that Cas liked a lot. Sometimes, it was easy to convince himself that they were more than friends. But he couldn't help but fear that his telling Dean this would break that illusion. It would tear him apart if Dean agreed that Cas wasn't the kind of omega that people would want as a mate.
"Cas," Dean started, and Cas thought he might be sick. This was the moment. Everything was going to be ruined.
"You have to know... I adore you. You are everything that I could ever want in a mate. You're smart and funny and amazing. I would have loved to court you. But I never wanted you to feel pressured with me. You're my best friend, and I never want to ruin that. But my alpha? He wants you as his omega."
Everything stopped in that moment. Cas' breath was stuck in his throat and he could hear Dean's heart beating erratically under his ear, smell how nervous the alpha was. This was everything that Cas had been wanting for months, offered to him on a silver platter.
Dean wanted to court Cas? Dean's alpha wanted him? Cas was worried that this was a dream, that he would suddenly wake up and it would all be over.
He was so out of his element. What should he do? He could accept and let the alpha court him and run on faith that it could work. But what if it didn't? What if they broke up at some point and it destroyed their friendship? Cas wouldn't be able to handle that. Dean was everything to him. He couldn't lose the alpha. Maybe he should just deny the offer...

Chapter Text
Castiel studied the alpha in front of him for a long moment, his mind racing, his heartbeat attempting to catch up. He was confused and excited and terrified all at once.
Dean Winchester, his best friend, the only alpha he has ever felt safe with, was asking him out.
He wanted to say no, was so scared that it wouldn't work, that he would lose Dean. The only thing that could be worse than that was spending the rest of his life wondering.
"Yes."
It's funny, you know. How one word could change everything. Could change your whole life.
In the end, Cas was just a simple man. As much as he would like to claim that he was above it all, that he could control his omega with such a tight leash, could ignore all of his instincts, he couldn't. He was just as feral as the rest of them.
"Really?" Dean filled with such hope, such brightness, Cas could swear he saw him in the dark. "I was really hoping. But I- I didn't wanna get too hopeful. Didn't wanna push."
Cas felt a sudden rush of emotion jolt through his body. One he had never felt before. Dean was everything he had ever wanted.
It hit him that he wished he could have a guarantee that this was going to work. He never wanted to lose his best friend. He wasn't sure anything could be worth that.
Dean got closer, so much so that Cas could feel the warmth of his breath. "May I scent you?" Dean asked, ever the gentleman.
Castiel was taking a giant leap, committing himself to an alpha. He was terrified that this massive change in their relationship -which basically said Dean was in charge of him- would cause the attitude to go away. That since Cas had been wooed, Dean wouldn't have to put up the facade anymore.
"Ye-eah," Cas said, a little breathlessy. Dean cautiously nosed closer to his neck, nudging Cas' head more to the side so he was essentially baring his throat in submission.
Dean slowly moved up Cas' neck, nose dragging against his skin, causing goosebumps to erupt. Castiel let out a shaky breath and suddenly he could feel the heat of warm air on his scent gland as Dean inhaled deeply.
Dean let out a bit of a growl, hands tightening on Cas' flank, pulling his body in closer.
"Smell so good. My omega." Dean huffed, voice huskier than usual.
Cas' heart stuttered in his chest as his eyes fluttered closed, mouth open on a gasp.
"Been wantin' to do this for so long." Dean admitted, lips tickling the omega's neck. "Smell so fuckin' good."
Cas' heart flipped over on itself, his body relaxing as Dean further scented him. It felt amazing, making all of his nerves light up, his inner omega taking over as he started to purr.
Dean rumbled in response, rubbing against Cas, scent-marking him.
It was all so overwhelming, the sensations, the smells, the feelings.
"Dean! Wait- stop," Cas panted, forcing his eyes open.
Dean immediately froze, backing away slightly. "What's wrong?" He asked, voice a bit shaky. Cas could see a hint of red in the alpha's eyes, despite the darkness.
"Jus- Need a minute," He said, trying to calm his racing heart. There was a certain heat in his stomach that he had never felt before, head spinning a bit.
Dean's hands roamed, feeling Cas' ribs, stomach, neck, chest. Anything he could reach without having to shift. It felt amazing. Was everything that Cas had been dreaming about for months.
Now that he was coming down from the rush of endorphins, Cas felt a bit sleepy, a small yawn breaking through.
"Can we... maybe go to sleep?" Castiel asked, eyes feeling heavy, even though he was a bit afraid. What if Dean wanted to go further tonight? He was an alpha, after all. And now that Cas was his, he might wanna claim his prize.
"Of course. Is it still okay to cuddle?" Dean asked, and Cas breathed a big sigh of relief, backing up into Dean so they were flush together. It was like a weight had been lifted off of him. He shouldn't have worried. Every time he thinks the worst, Dean always takes him by surprise.
Dean wrapped his arms tightly around the omega, nuzzling his neck, purring deeply.
"G'night," Dean whispered, pressing a light kiss to Cas' hairline.
The younger boy hummed, closing his eyes, before drifting into a peaceful sleep.
...
Castiel woke up first, Dean's arms still wrapped around him, keeping him safe from the outside world. His stomach immediately started to tie itself up in knots.
He had said yes.
Dean had scented him.
They were in a courtship.
They were basically dating.
Dean was going to want sex.
And, okay, that wasn't the worst thought in the world, but Cas wasn't ready. Wasn't sure if he would be anytime soon. And alpha's aren't exactly known for being patient.
Yes, Dean was sweet. Yes, he was unlike any other alpha Cas had ever met. But also... Cas was his. He was a claimed omega. It was Dean's right. And to be perfectly honest, Castiel wasn't even sure he was ready to kiss someone yet. Which was so stupid. But it just all seemed too much, too fast. He was so fucked. Why in the world did he agree to this. He never learns. He should ju-
"Good morning, Omega," Dean rumbled into his ear, nuzzling his lips against the lobe. Cas' entire body shivered, and not completely out of fear either. He loved this. It felt amazing. He just wasn't ready to move past this yet.
"Good morning, Alpha," He responded, cheeks a bright red. Was that what he had to refer to Dean from now on? Cas wasn't sure of the rules here...
Dean purred, rubbing Cas' side, fingers tracing invisible patterns on his skin where the shirt had ridden up. Cas' eyes fluttered, skin erupting in goosebumps. It was coming, wasn't it? His hand was going to dip and he would reach around and he would take what he wanted.
"Would you like breakfast?"
And there it was. A simple offer that washed all traces of anxiety from Cas' mind.
"I would love that."

Chapter 21
Notes:
I had this sitting around in my drafts even though I wrote it at the same time I wrote the last chapter.... oops?
Chapter Text
Castiel and Gabriel had dipped pretty soon after breakfast that morning. Castiel had given a half-assed excuse about wanting to see Michael. Which wasn't a complete lie. But it also wasn't the truth.
Everyone had eaten at the table together, conversing and laughing and seemingly having a great time. But Cas had felt so awkward the whole time. He was worried that he had looked over at Dean too much. Because Dean's parents didn't know and what if they found out because Cas couldn't keep his eyes from wandering? Everything felt so different now. The omega wasn't sure how he was supposed to act.
Which means he was all too happy to flee as soon as his plate was finished. And he was able to avoid a possible kiss by making sure they were in sight of John and Mary the entire time.
Dean was respectful and didn't text him while Cas spent time with his family. Which was both a blessing and a curse and that concoction of emotions could only lead to overthinking. Michael and Lucifer welcomed the two back with big smiles and board games, asking all about how the weekend was. Gabriel talked and Cas felt like a big, fat liar for not mentioning the change in relationship between him and Dean.
"Sam is so funny!" Gabe gushed, his cheeks a bright, bubblegum pink. "We played charades and video games while Cassie was camping. It was awesome!" And Cas should have been listening to the detailed account of what happened while he was away, but instead he was obsessing over the fact that Dean wasn't contacting him.
Was it truly because he was being respectful or did he just not want to talk to him? Had he regretted last night? Cas might not have mentioned it, but neither had Dean. What if the older boy was avoiding him? Cas felt so sick at the thought, his scent noticeably changed, causing Michael to sneeze and everyone turned to him.
"Is something the matter?" Michael asked, a crease forming between his eyebrows. The one that always appeared when he was concerned.
"S-sorry, I'm okay." Cas' cheeks flushed in embarrassment. "I just feel a little sick, is all. It's nothing serious, I just didn't sleep well last night. I think I'm gonna go lie down for a bit." He stood up on shaky legs, and couldn't help but wonder if anyone else noticed the tremor in his body.
"Let me walk you. You look a bit pale." Luci offered, standing up and holding out his arm for Cas to grab onto. Michael shot him an adoring look and a blinding smile. It just made Cas feel worse.
...
Castiel finally gets an alpha to court him and it turns him into a pathetic, whiny mess. He laid in bed, watching cat videos, waiting for Dean to reach out.
And yes, he could one hundred percent be the one to make that leap and send a text to the alpha, but he didn't want Dean to know how clingy he was feeling. Which was stupid since Cas was the one who weaseled himself home earlier than he had intended to.
Navigating this change was so nerve-wracking. Everything felt so delicate, like one misstep would cause the entire bridge to collapse. The bridge they have spent half a year building together. So Castiel gritted his teeth and kept scrolling through his phone, trying to convince himself that he wasn't driving himself crazy as he checked Dean's contact every fifteen seconds to see if he had texted yet.
Update: he hadn't.
...
It took until six in the evening before Cas got a call. Gabe had pulled him out of his self-imposed prison cell to play Uno as they all ate pizza together. It was enough to take most of his attention off the silence of his cell phone. But now Cas was freshly showered and getting his school stuff ready for Monday. And then his phone started buzzing.
Castiel all but flung himself at the bed, where his phone lay, displaying in bright letters DEAN CALLING.
His fingers were so shaky, he almost denied it.
"Hello?" His voice was surprisingly calm for how nervous he felt. Oh god, what were they supposed to talk about now? This was exactly what he feared. This whole new dynamic felt awkward and stunted and unsure.
"Omega," Dean rumbled through the phone, easing Cas' body immediately, even as his mind was still doing mental acrobatics over how he was supposed to act around his alpha now.
"I'm sorry, I know it's only been a few hours, but I missed you." The admission made something in Cas' chest loosen and he sank into his pillows, smiling up at the ceiling.
"I missed you too," He whispered, mind quieting at last. "Like, more than is probably necessary." Dean chuckled fondly and Cas briefly wondered what he had been so worried about.
"How was the family time? Boring? Torturous? Was it the worst without me there?" Dean teased, pulling a giggle out of the omega. Everything locked into place and there they were, Dean and Cas, best friends. It was always so easy between them.
"Yes, actually. If I have to listen to one more story about how Michael caught Luci painting naked, I might shoot myself." Dean laughed and Cas made himself a nice little home in that sound, his omega practically drooling in its contentedness.
"How disgusting. I wanna try."
"Catching Luci naked? Be my guest. But just so you're warned, Gabe did once and his innocence still hasn't returned."
"Or I could just catch you naked."
Cas' breath hitched, something simmering low in his belly. Something he was unfamiliar with. His heart lurched in his chest, a mixture of attraction and anxiety swirling around behind his ribs.
"Uh- I-" Cas' throat closed up, every nerve in his body screaming, Don't make him mad!!. He couldn't think of what he should do. Just ignore it? Flirt back? How does one even flirt in the first place? Or should he be honest with Dean? Lay it all out on the table. He is not nearly ready for anything even remotely sexual. But that would be at the risk of losing this new relationship. And now that Cas has got a taste of this, he doesn't know if he could give it all up like that.
Dean interrupted his inner turmoil before Cas could work himself up too much. "Sorry! I- I didn't mean to be that forward. I just- I'm not trying to pressure you or anything. I guess I've just been holding in my urge to flirt with you for so long, I got a little overexcited. You know... now that I'm allowed..." Dean trailed off sheepishly and Cas figured he owed it to Dean to be just as open.
"No, no. It's okay. I feel like..." Cas has never done this before. How does someone set boundaries? "Maybe we should talk about expectations?" He practically squeaked, anxiety rolling off of him in such thick waves, that even he could smell it.
"Of course. Whatever you need to feel comfortable. I want nothing more than to make you happy." Cas' heart stuttered to a complete stop before jump-starting full force, slamming against his ribcage in a near-painful dance.
Unsure how to continue from here, Cas sat quietly for a moment, willing his heart to calm down. "I'm not... I'm not ready for anything. Like, I'm not sure if I'm even ready to-" Cas cut himself off abruptly, suddenly nervous. Figuring the only way out is through, he blurted it out. "Kiss!" He let it dangle in the air between them. Not knowing if he wanted to Dean to grab it or just let it float on by.
So the omega listened to the steady sound of his alpha's breath, waiting for him to process the information. This was it. Everything laid out. Nothing to hide anymore. Castiel has never felt more vulnerable.
"Okay. We'll move at your pace. Never faster. You have my word, Cas. I never want to hurt you. The things that have happened, the kind of suffering you have experienced... I promise to protect you from that ever happening again. To protect you from everything. I'm your alpha now, Cas. And you're my omega. And I will never let anyone or anything hurt what's mine." And this wasn't fair, okay? Dean can't just go around saying things like that willy-nilly as if it isn't exactly what Cas needs to hear.
If Castiel didn't know before, he sure would have now. He is so helplessly in love with Dean Winchester.

Castiel woke up Monday morning to an alarm blaring in his ear. The sun was nowhere to be found, undoubtedly due to the incoming winter. Cas loved the colder months. He's always hated the heat, even as a child. Naomi would always get mad at him when he complained about how hot and uncomfortable he was during the summer. Chuck would try to remind him that his mom didn't like hearing about it, telling him that he would have to be brave and endure it silently, but sometimes he would slip up when he was really sweaty. He had learned his lesson harshly, though. Recounting the first time Naomi had hit him because of it. Calling him a disgrace. Saying that he had been reminded over and over and that he was out of second chances.
Castiel started to sweat a bit at the memory, his heart thudding in fear. He hadn't thought about his mom in a long time. Memories of Naomi were rarely happy. She had been cruel long before Gabriel was born.
Pushing himself up, he sat on the edge of his bed, confused. He didn't understand why he would suddenly be dredging up the past like this, especially over memories that were still sharp and ragged, slicing him every time he tried to hold onto it.
He jumped when his phone started ringing, quickly grabbing it from off the charger. Without looking, he answered, still distracted by his train of thought.
"Hey, baby." Dean's voice drawled over the line, immediately easing Cas' mind and his omega. Any thought of his past always made his inner omega's hackles rise.
"Good morning, Dean," Cas replied, voice husky from sleep. "To what do I owe the pleasure of a wake-up call?" He asked, even though he had already been awake.
"Well, I was wondering if you'd like a ride? You and Gabe, obviously. Samantha hasn't stopped talking about him since you guys left." Cas smiled at the familiarity of their brotherly teasing.
"Y-yeah, of course. I'd love that." Cas' omega was perked up and practically prancing around at the idea of seeing his alpha again. Castiel vaguely wondered if it was normal how strongly his omega reacted to Dean.
"Awesome! Hell yeah. Be there in thirty?" Cas gave another affirmation before hanging up because he seriously needed to get ready. And wake Gabriel up.
Quickly getting dressed, Castiel made his way down the hall to Gabe's room, knocking on the closed door.
"Cas?" Gabe whined through the thick wood, voice squeaky and pained in a way he had never heard before.
"Gabe?" Cas opened the door in a panic, frantically moving over to Gabe's bedside. The poor boy was sweating, face flushed bright red, as he squirmed.
"What's wrong?" He asked, trying to find the cause of Gabe's condition. "Are you sick?"
"I don- I don't know. Hurts. Everything. My stomach an- and-" Gabe cut off, another whine forcing its way through his throat. Cas' nose twitched before he sneezed violently, his eyes widening in horror as the realisation sunk in. No, no, no, nononono! Not Gabe. Not now. God, please.
But the smell of slick permeated the room, making Cas feel sick to his stomach. He was supposed to be an alpha. Castiel begged for so long for
Gabe to present as an alpha. "I'll go get Michael," Cas said, eyes teary and throat tight.
"No!" Gabe cried out, body shaking. "Please, Cas. Please don't leave me." The poor boy was convulsing, his hair already soaking wet.
"Okay, okay. I've got you." Cas pushed the hair out of Gabe's face, smiling at him. He hoped it was convincing. To him, it just felt strained. Turning towards the door, he yelled out for Michael. It took a minute before Cas heard footsteps approaching and he sent a silent thank-you that their walls weren't overly thick.
"Hey, guys, Michael's in the show- oh." Lucifer stopped dead in his tracks, staring at the two omegas helplessly. Cas let out an involuntary growl, baring his teeth at the intruder. Luci immediately put his hands up in surrender, baring his neck in submission. That was entirely for Cas' benefit since betas didn't have the same kind of primal urges as alphas and omegas.
"Sorry, sorry. I didn't mean to startle you I just... Gabe? Is it okay if I come closer?" Cas was about to shut that shit down and fast. No way would he let anyone besides Michael around his vulnerable little brother. But Gabe agreed before Cas could protest. And the only thing that mattered was Gabriel right now. So he tried to tamp down on his instincts as Luci made his way closer, trying to be as unassuming as possible, clearly trying to ease Cas' omega. And he wasn't too far to admit that he greatly appreciated how the beta was handling this delicate situation. He'd have to remember to thank him later.
"Hey, buddy," The man soothed, coming to stand slightly beside Cas.
"Hi, Luci," Gabe forced out between panting breaths.
"How are you feeling?" A low grumble escaped Cas' throat, making Luci chuckle a bit sheepishly. "Right, sorry. Stupid question. I'm gonna go to the store to get you some Gatorade, alright? You need electrolytes. I'll pick up some light snacks too. Let me go tell Michael the situation and then I'll be off, okay?" Gabe nodded, slightly delirious from his fever.
Cas caught Lucifer's wrist as he was walking away. "Thank you," He said quietly, unable to meet the man's eyes after all of his territorial bullshit.
"It's nothing. Really, Cas. You guys know you're my family, right? I love you both. It's not just because of Michael." Castiel blushed and he felt bad for not giving him more credit. I mean, honestly. Who else would accept a husband who came with two kids at the age of twenty-one? But that's exactly what Lucifer did. And he hasn't complained once about it.
...
By the time Michael came into the bedroom, Gabriel was almost fully gone. And that's when Cas heard the Impala pull up outside, along with a car door opening and closing.
"Cas, go downstairs. Sam can't come in, not with the house smelling like this." Cas' eyes widened in realisation and he dashed downstairs, hoping to catch the alpha's before they got too close.
"Whoa! Hey, there," Dean huffed out, catching Cas before he almost trampled the poor boy down. "What's the rush?"
"Sam!" Cas called, causing the younger alpha to pause on the porch step.
"Sam?" Dean said, all confused puppy eyes. God, he was so fucking cute. But now was really not the time.
"Sam, you can't go in there," He said urgently, moving to physically block the front door.
"What? Why?" The boy seemed a bit hurt and Cas felt bad about not being kinder.
"Gabe. He- he's presented." Sam made a squeaking noise, clearly torn between wanting to know and not wanting to know.
"He did? As what? Is he okay?" Dean's nose twitched as a breeze picked up outside the windows, carrying the smell of fresh omega over.
"Shit, Sam. Get in the car!" He barked, eyes flashing red in dominance. Sam startled, but obliged, looking confused and a little terrified.
Cas looked over at his alpha, just as confused as Sam was.
"Dean? What happened?" Sam asked, voice a little watery. Dean has never used his alpha on Sam like that. Or anyone, really. Only when defending Cas. But it was the only thing he knew that would get Sam moving.
"Gabe. I can smell him," He explained, walking over to where Sam sat in the back. "He's an omega." Sam's eyes flashed red, just as Dean's had only a moment ago, his face full of hope and excitement.
"Really? He's an omega?!" Cas tilted his head quizzically, studying the young boy. He has never seen someone so happy that someone presented as an omega. And if Sam was anything like Dean (and who was he kidding, he could rival Dean's own puppy-ness tendencies), maybe Gabriel would be okay.
"Sam, your hoodie. Let me see your hoodie. For Gabe," Cas said, walking closer. He felt a knot in his chest loosen. He knew, without a doubt, that Sam would take care of Gabe. Would protect him like Dean protected Cas. Like John protected Mary.
"Oh! Of course, here," Sam practically tore the hoodie off like it had personally offended him, causing his hair to stand up at all kinds of odd angles.
"I'll take to him. Then I'll be ready," He smiled at the brothers before heading back inside.
...
Michael was in the kitchen, making Gabriel some soup. He used one of his sick days to stay home with the poor boy. This heat would be less about arousal and more about the physical changes. Cas remembers how awful it was when he presented.
Gabe was in bed with a heating pad, a constant whine bubbling out of his throat as he panted through the pain. Cas' heart broke at the sight. All he's ever wanted to do was protect Gabe. How does he protect him from this? From biology and his own body?
"Hey," He said softly, padding his way across the carpet. Gabe tilted his head in acknowledgment, but didn't respond otherwise. "I brought something for you."
Gabriel forced one eye open, which was bloodshot and ringed with gold. It made Cas' entire body sway with longing. Longing to erase the pain. To make this okay. To maybe even go back in time and change the way omegas are treated if it would help Gabe at all with this.
Instead, he did the only thing he could do. Which was offer up the hoodie. This caused both of Gabriel's eyes to spring wide open as he practically snatched the clothing out of Cas' hand, bringing it up to his nose and purring. Cas watched as Gabe visibly relaxed, muscles loosening as he nuzzled Sam's hoodie. His eyes drooped as he smiled, his omega finally content. And Cas was just relieved that it helped. Anything to make him feel better.
"I'll be back after school, okay? I promise," He pressed a kiss to Gabe's salty forehead as the young omega started dozing off, purr still going strong. Cas breathed a sigh of relief, adjusting the blankets around Gabe to make him more comfortable before leaving to go to school.
...
When Cas got to school and had to part from Dean, his brain felt muddled and slow. All he could think about was that stupid fucking townhouse with the forceful alpha. And anytime he tried to think about anything else, his icy blue eyes popped up, unrelenting and unwillingly drawing Castiel's attention back to his face. To his knot. To how much pain he put Cas through.
It had been so blissfully long since Cas had thought about those nights that it's like a punch right to the gut that it's all his mind could think about. Except every now and then, it was Gabe. Gabe, huddling, afraid, under his sheets as he heard the window slide open. Gabe, bleeding and broken in the shower. Gabe, wincing every time he sat down, trying not to grimace. Gabe, Gabe, Gabe.
After first period, he walked to his locker, acutely aware of everyone around him. His omega was threatened and on guard. So when Dean startled him from behind, Cas snarled and whipped around, eyes a deep gold. And then, Dean did something incredible. His eyes flashed red in response before he bared his throat, fully submitting to Cas. It was astonishing. Castiel had never heard of an alpha submitting to anyone, much less an omega. Especially not to him.
"Sorry," Dean said, looking contrite. "I didn't mean to scare you."
And Cas was so surprised that he answered on instinct. "It's okay. I guess I'm just a bit more on edge today. With Gabe and everything..." In fact, his omega was screaming at him to go home and take care of his baby brother. His little pup. To build him a nest and cuddle him and drain all the pain out until he was smiling and happy. He could do none of those things, though.
"That makes sense. Do you want a ride home after school?" And Cas could cry at Dean's thoughtfulness. Usually, they knew Cas would join Dean at his place after school. A kind of unspoken ritual. But he knew Cas was having a hard time being away from Gabe, so he adjusted accordingly. And Cas kind of almost wanted to kiss him.
"Yes, please. Thank you, alpha." Cas leaned in for a quick hug instead, breathing in deeply and feeling more calm than he had since his rude awakening this morning. He wanted to linger, but the warning bell rang, loud and shrill above them, ruining the moment. So Cas pulled away regretfully. "I'll see you later?" He asked, stalling, because he wasn't ready to leave yet. Wasn't sure he ever would be.
"Of course." Dean squeezed his waist before removing himself completely. Castiel was the one to walk away first, anxious about being late. But it took everything in him to do so as his muscles protested at every step.
...
When Cas sat down at his desk, he could feel somebody watching him. And it set him on edge. Sure, he drew a lot of attention when he walked in right as the final bell blared, quickly seating himself. But somebody's eyes were lingering. His omega was pacing and snarling at the perceived threat, making it impossible to focus. The back of his neck pricked in hot anxiety, a feeling that had attached itself to him this morning, and he grit his teeth against the urge to growl in defense. His stomach was curled in on itself and he desperately wished Dean were here. And how pathetic was that? He was like a damsel in distress who always needed his alpha to rescue him out of situations.
With his back ramrod straight, he gave up on trying to listen to the teacher and instead focused all of his attention on keeping his scent reigned in.
Once the ball rang, Cas sprang up, hoping to escape the crowd. Luck was not on his side, however. A strange alpha stopped him with a hand on his wrist, smiling in a way he probably thought was charming, but it came off as predatory. His scent wrapped itself around Cas unpleasantly, intruding on his senses and he tried to rip his hand free. The alpha only tightened his grip, making Cas feel trapped.
"I'm Gordon. And you smell delicious," The alpha said, all white teeth and dark skin. Cas hated him. He wanted to growl and kick him in the nuts. All he was able to do was respond in a meek voice.
"Didn't anyone ever tell you it's rude to comment on someone's scent?" And that is not what he meant to say, but he was tired of fake politeness. Tired of Dean having to save him from pushy alphas. Tired of people not taking his no's seriously. Of not taking him seriously.
Gordon's eyes narrowed into slits and his eyes flashed red. Cas refused to give in. Had to be strong. How would Gabriel ever stand up for himself if Cas couldn't do it? He was the older brother. It was his job to teach Gabe that alphas weren't in charge of him. So he held his ground, even as his knees buckled and his stomach swam in the empty pit that was once his abdomen. All the while, this strange alpha kept a near-painful grip on his wrist.
"You would do well to remember your place, omega. I'm an alpha, you should be submitting to me."
"And you would do well to learn some manners." He spat out, eyes flashing gold. But for the first time, it was out of anger instead of fear.
"Is everything okay here?" They both startled and Cas was beyond relieved to see Dean next to them, eyeing Gordon with a startling heat that Cas knew meant he was ready to fuck a person up if he needed to.
"We're fine, isn't that right?" Gordon looked at Cas, smiling sickeningly sweet and Cas growled, glaring with all the venom of a starving lion would a deer. "Just trying to teach a lesson in obeying. I'm sure you understand." And the bastard had the nerve to look at Dean as if they were long-time pals. As if to say 'omegas, right? What can you do?'. Like Dean wouldn't rip him to shreds if he could.
"No, actually. I don't know. And I would appreciate it if you got your filthy hands off my omega." And Cas must be half-deranged today because that should not release thousands of tiny butterflies through his body, making his heart beat in synchronicity of their beating wings, but here they are. With an alpha holding onto Cas' wrist, making him feel threatened, and Dean was angry and hot and Cas was his. Maybe he should get used to the heat after all because it was sure to be hot in hell, but if this is what seals his fate, then so be it. A life spent belonging to Dean was sure to be a life fulfilled.
"Your omega? I don't see a mark." But Gordon did drop Cas' wrist, and Cas could smell the rancid fear seeping into his otherwise smokey scent. Because Gordon was all stale cigarette smoke and old beer, smelling of black mold and dust, a disgusting mixture.
Cas folded himself into Dean, who easily slipped a hand on his waist, unintentionally teasing the skin there as he absentmindedly started rubbing his thumb in soothing circles. Cas sighed despite himself and melted into the touch, still glaring daggers at Gordon and wishing he were in Dean's car, wrapped in his scent and warmed leather, on their way to see Gabe.
"And I don't see a right to put your hands on an omega, mark or not, who clearly didn't want you to." Cas heard hard shoes hitting the dirty linoleum, making their way over. He looked up to see his teacher, who had slipped out with the first of the students, returning from the bathroom, eyebrows furrowed.
"What's going on here?" He asked, weary at the trio blocking his doorway.
"Nothing. We were just going." Dean said, eyebrows raised, mouth set in a cocky smile, as if daring Gordon to disagree.
"Sorry," Gordon muttered, not looking anyone in the eye. "Was just asking about a project." And then he walked off, Dean and Cas following suit after sending another apology to the teacher. Cas couldn't help himself as he pulled Dean into a corner, attacking him with a tight hug and pressing a light kiss to his crimson cheeks.
"Thank you." He said sincerely, and Dean seemed to be rendered stupid because he just nodded clumsily, eyes looking a little dazed. "And I can not handle one more class. Take me home now, please?" He asked, which seemed to get Dean working again.
"Yeah, Cas. Of course."
And that is why, for the first time ever, goody-two-shoes Cas skipped school.

Chapter Text
After Dean dropped Cas off at his house, he drove home, feeling uncomfortable the entire way. He was so used to Cas being in the car with him, that it had honestly been a long time since he’d driven alone.
His mom’s car was in the driveway when he pulled in and Dean was glad that he wouldn’t be the only one at home, at least.
Walking in greeted him to the silence of the house, the air cool and distinctly lacking the scent of his omega.
“Mom?” Kicking off his shoes, Dean walked further in.
“Dean? I’m in the living room. Why are you here?” Dean followed the sound of her voice, his body relaxing as he went.
“Gabriel presented. And Cas was going stir-crazy being away from him so…” Dean shrugged, taking a seat next to Mary. She had clearly been knitting, but she quickly set aside her yarn and needles, opening her arms up for him. “Sorry. Should have asked first.” He laid his head against her chest, snuggling up against her body.
“You and Cas seem to be getting close,” She clearly attempted to say it casually, but he could hear the interest in the tone of her voice.
“Yeah.” They were silent for a moment as Dean tried to gather up the courage. “We actually… we’re- I’m courting him. Kind of? I dunno. It’s not an official one, because we’ve been friends for so long but… that’s what we’re doing.”
Mary hummed, carding her fingers through his hair, soothing his nerves.
“He’s great. Your dad and I couldn’t have imagined an omega better for you. But this does change a few things. You’re an alpha and a teenager and I know that means-”
“Oh, mom!” His face was hot and he buried it in his hands, groaning louder as Mary giggled.
“Honey, it’s okay. It’s natural, but, you guys sleep in the same room and I don’t know if that should continue if you’re starting to form a relationship.”
Dean’s alpha whined at the thought and he looked at her, considering his next words carefully.
“Mom I- I understand the concern but I can assure you, you don’t have to worry about that. Cas isn’t- he doesn’t- he’s just not like that. He’s not interested in that.” Dean could feel the blush rising again. This was definitely not the conversation he thought they’d be having, but he also understood that it was an important one. “To be honest, I’m not sure if he ever will be.”
Mary looked at him for a long time, taking him in. “Are you okay with that? Because, honey, don’t court him if you’re not. Don’t court him in hopes that he might change his mind.”
And Dean loved how much his mom cared about Cas as well as him. “I’m okay with it, mom. Really. I know it’s soon and our relationship is just starting but I… mom, I really, really care about him. And I love him like a best friend. And I really think I could love him as a mate, too.”
Mary pulled him into a tight hug, kissing his head and cheek. “I’m so glad, honey. Just make sure if he does change his mind, you use a condom.”
Dean gagged dramatically, pushing her away. She laughed manaically and Dean felt so betrayed because she was totally teasing him!
“Ugh, moommmm.” She laughed harder, just grabbing her knitting needles and continuing working the yarn as if nothing had happened.
After the embarrassment worked its way through him, he grabbed the remote, switching on the tv. “Movie?”
…
Castiel laid with Gabriel on his chest, toying with the younger omega’s hair, taking in his vague syrupy-sweet scent.
“Are you excited to see Sam again?” He asked, looking up at the ceiling.
“Yeah… I really like Sammy.” Gabe sighed at the thought of the alpha, his cramps subsided for the moment. “D’ya like Dean?”
Cas nodded, his heart jumping at the mention of Dean.
“Yeah. I really like him. We’re in a courtship right now.” It was the first time saying it out loud and Cas’ omega was prancing around because of it. “Those Winchester boys, am I right?”
Gabe giggled, nodding enthusiastically. “Yeah. Those Winchesters.”
Michael walked in, smiling at the two omegas cuddling. “How’re you feelin’, buddy?” He sat next to the two of them, watching the scene fondly.
“Better, right now, I think. My tummy doesn’t hurt so much right now. Cassie made it feel better with his cuddles and snacks.”
Cas preened, lifting his chin into the air at the praise.
“Good. I’m glad. Do you guys want some dinner? Maybe we can have a family night while you’re feeling up to it?” Castiel admired Michael so much. Someone who, without a second thought, took on the responsibility of two kids. Who knows where they would have ended up with if they had been left with Naomi.
“Yes, please. And I want ice cream and couch cuddles.”
“You got it. Whatever you want. I’ll send Luci to the store and I’ll make your favorite pasta salad. The carbs will be good for you.” Michael kissed both of their foreheads before leaving the room, going to do as promised.
…
Gabriel was squished between Michael and Cas, finishing off his ice cream cone. They were watching old reruns of Friends together.
The cramps started again, causing the young omega to start squirming. “Gabe?” Cas quickly turned all of his attention onto his brother, starting to rub his back.
“Hurts,” Gabe mumbled, tucking his face into Cas’ neck.
“Okay, okay. Let’s take you upstairs. Luci, can you help me?” Luci voiced his agreement, walking over to help get Gabriel on his feet.
“‘Lay with me?” Gabe slurred, looking at Cas.
“‘Course I will. Whatever you need.” They took the stairs slowly, helping Gabe with each step.
Soon enough, Cas was arranging Gabriel in bed, who was snuggling Sam’s hoodie. Castiel started fussing with the nest, making sure it was perfect.
“Thanks again, Luci. With all of your help. I really appreciate it.” Cas gave Lucifer a big hug, who promised him he’d always help out when they needed it. Castiel was so thankful for him.
Slipping into bed as Luci left the room, Cas gathered Gabe in his arms, arranging the boy so his head was on Cas’ chest.
“I love you.” Carding his fingers through Gabe’s hair, he watched as the omega started to doze off, never even giving a response.
Once Cas was sure that Gabe was satisfactorily passed out, he dug his phone out of his back pocket, trying to be careful not to disturb the dozing omega. It took a half dozen tries, but he eventually got it.
Opening up his contact list, Cas smiled as he called Dean, excited to hear the alpha’s voice.
Dean answered on the third ring.
“Hey, Cas.” Dean’s voice was rumbly and perfect and god, Cas missed his alpha. “I missed you today.”
“I missed you too, Dean. So much.” Cas was starting to get more comfortable with the easy honesty between the two of them, feeling relaxed to talk freely.
“How’s Gabe doing?” Okay, that was not fair. Dean couldn’t just casually ask after his brother. He must know that was the easiest way to win Cas’ heart. (Let’s be for real, Dean won it weeks ago).
“Better, I think. It seems to be lessening up already. First heats are definitely the most painful, but they’re also the shortest. Which, for Gabe’s sake, I’m really glad for.” Cas’ had only lasted two days, but Gabriel was already seeming more lucid. “My first one was definitely no walk in the park.” He admitted.
Dean made a sound between a whimper and a gasp at that, causing concern to flush through Cas. “Dean?” He asked, heart picking up speed.
“Sorry, sorry. I’m okay I just- imagining you in heat and- yeah.” Cas knew for a fact that Dean was blushing on the other end and it made him smile warmly, chest tight with affection.
“My apologies. I didn’t think much about how that would make you feel.” He admitted, though he wasn’t all that sorry. Maybe he should be feeling more uncomfortable right now, but Dean was at home. No way was he driving over just to jump his bones because he mentioned a heat. And while he definitely didn’t want that, it felt kind of nice to know he was desired. If a little scary. But this was the same boy who ignored Cas literally throwing himself at the alpha while he was in heat, just to make sure he got home safely. A little teasing wouldn’t hurt anything… right?
“Although, I can’t imagine how witnessing my heat made you feel either.” Dean let out a low groan that sent a thrill through Cas, making his heart stutter in his chest.
“That is so not fair.” Dean said, his voice huskier than usual. And while it didn’t arouse Cas, it did make him feel proud to know he had that effect on Dean. Sweet, perfect Dean. Turned on because of him.
Yeah, that was a great ego boost.
“I’m sorry. That was mean of me.” He admitted, though he was still smiling.
“No, no. It’s okay. I like this side of you, really. I just- I guess I’m not sure what the expectations are here? I know you aren’t comfortable with this stuff. But I am. I want and I react, but I don’t want that to make you feel pressured.” Dean’s voice was tight with embarrassment and Cas idly wished he could see his alpha right now. To scent him and lay on him and reassure him.
“I know you do. And that’s- that’s okay. I kinda like that you don’t hide that side of you from me. I may not feel things like you do, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to. I know you won’t hurt me. You’ve proven that on so many occasions. I trust you. Completely. And I don’t want you to feel that you have to hide how you feel from me.” He felt laid out and vulnerable, but in a good way. In the best way.
They talked into the night with hushed voices and silent giggles until Cas eventually drifted off and Dean reluctantly hung up the phone.
…
Cas woke up bleary-eyed and groggy as an alarm blared next to his head. There was a groan and a foreign weight on his chest that made it hard to breathe. He cracked an eye open to see shaggy, golden hair that was starting to tickle his nose.
“Gabe.” He whined, squeezing his eyes shut against the sound assaulting his ears.
“What?” The reply was muffled into his chest, just loud enough for Cas to hear.
“Your alarm is annoying.”
Gabe snorted, shifting to sit up. He landed next to Cas’ legs and finally shut the damn thing up before stretching with an overdramatic yawn.
“How are you feeling?” Cas looked him over but he seemed normal. Like Gabe. Just a more tired version.
“Good. Better. Ready for a hot shower and a good breakfast.” Gabe said, smiling warmly at Cas. “Thanks for being there, Cassie. Really.”
“I’ll always be here for you.” Cas said earnestly, wrapping his younger brother up into a tight hug. He scented his neck on instinct and pulled back in surprise.
“What?” Gabe asked, eyes wide and confused by the sudden end to their sweet moment.
“Sorry, you just… You have a scent now. Like, a real one. Like an omega.”
“Is it bad?” Gabe’s voice was full of anxiety and Cas immediately felt guilty.
“No! No, of course not. S’nice, really. Just caught me by surprise.
Gabriel studied him for a long moment before his face opened with childish wonder. “What’s it like?” He asked, eyes sparkling with his curiosity.
Cas leaned forward to take a deep inhale of the new scent, closing his eyes as he did so.
“Well, like family, obviously. But… it’s sweet.” He said, opening his lids to look back at his brother. “Reminds me of dessert and sugar, really. Like a bakery and a candyshop all wrapped in one.”
“Oh.” Gabe pondered that for a moment, a little smile on his face as he considered. “Do you think Sam will like it?” He asked, after a long stretch of silence.
“I think Sam likes you and anything that includes.” Because if Sam was anything like Dean, he would be sweet and accepting and happy.
Gabe blushed and stood up, making his way to the closet. “I’m gonna shower. Will you ask Dean to pick us up? I wanna see Sammy.”
“On it.” And Cas made his way to his own bedroom, doing just that as he picked out an outfit for the day.
…
“Woah.” Sam breathed, and Cas grinned with affection as he watched the younger boys stare at each other, Dean right next to him to enjoy the show.
“You smell- I just, I-” Sam stuttered over half-formed sentences, eyes drinking in the sight of the newly-presented omega.
“You too.” Gabe blushed, face doing a fantastic impression of a tomato.
Sam smiled, wide and toothy, before pulling Gabe into what looked like a bone-crushing hug. Cas found it way too endearing.
“Alright, nerds. Pack it up. We’re gonna be late.” Dean declared loudly, effectively breaking the moment. Cas giggled as they pulled apart, faces a matching shade of burgundy as Sam shyly opened the car door for Gabe.
And for the first time in a long time, Castiel thought everything just might be okay.

I hope you liked the chapter! It will soon be time to make good use of the kissing and smut tags ;)
