Can I join a Masonic lodge?

In doing an online search to answer your question, the only counsel that was given was this:
Don LeFevre, a past spokesman for the church has said the church “…strongly advises its members not to affiliate with organizations that are secret, oath-bound, or would cause them to lose interest in church activities.” Salt Lake Tribune, Section D1, Monday, February 17, 1992.
But let us keep in mind that this was in the Salt Lake Tribune and NOT in an official church publication.
First, you’d have to be invited to join. Second, you’d need to keep a different perspective on certain Masonic rituals. There will be similarities between Masonic rituals and Temple ordinances. To me, while Joseph Smith learned many things from the Masons, he learned their meaning through revelation. We learn best about their spiritual meaning in the House of the Lord.
Is this a good and wise use of your time? If you live near a temple, wouldn’t it be better to spend more time there, instead of a Masonic lodge? Or spend more time with family? Only you can answer that for yourself.
