- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2012How to Treat Your Dogs and Cats with Over-the-Counter Drugs by Robert L. Ridgeway, DVM
Review by Bill Speer
We travel with our pets in a RV over 200 days a year and we have been looking for a good reference book to help us diagnose our pet's ailments. Dr. Ridgeway's book is the ideal animal care reference for travelers. The book is organized in 9 chapters, each dealing with problem areas such as eyes, ears, skin, and digestive tract ailments. The table of contents and index are written in nonmedical terms and it is easy to find your pet's problem or illness. In the sections, you can read a description of the ailment, how to treat it, and when a Veterinarian should be consulted. The treatments using supplies from your medicine cabinet are clear, concise, and accompanied by charts with suggested dosages. Treatment directions are often the same for different ailments but the author kindly repeats them so you do not have to thumb back and forth through different chapters to carryout a treatment. Dr. Ridgeway also makes it clear which treatments are not recommended for cats or certain dog breeds. This book is a convenient 5½" x 9" and only108 pages long with a section in the back for your notes.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2011I have a boarding kennel and have been using home remedies for years. Some of mine, especially the treatment for hot spots, are more effective than the advice given in this book. I must admit though, that I confused this book with another pet first aid book and wrote my review based on the other book. My last review of this book was not very kind and that was my fault. This book is a lot better than the Pet First Aid book. I apologize to the author - so sorry.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2011This is a fabulous book that covers both cats and dogs. What I like most, is the Author is a Veterinarian. The book covers a host of illnesses that can be treated at home. However, if there are certain symptoms, he will recommend a trip to the Vet.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2011Pretty much a waste of time and money,in many cases it said to take the animal to the vet. Didn't learn anything new from it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2014Very disappointing. Written like it was put together in a hurry and like he thinks his readers are basically below average intelligence and uneducated. A lot of information is left out. Unbelievable that this book was written by a veterinarian. I worked for veterinarians for 22 years and you are better off calling your vet for information than to waste money on this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2013It was very informative. We have five dogs between the two of us and my sons have many too. this book will come in handy whenever we need help. Also we will no longer panic whenever we see it is not life threatening and do not have to run to the vet, which is VERY expensive now a days. Thank you very much for the vet who wrote this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2015This book came in very handy with the dogs. I was grateful for the information.
