Introduction to the Hebrew Bible: Third Edition Paperback – April 1, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
John J. Collins's Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is one of the most reliable and widely adopted critical textbooks at undergraduate and graduate levels alike, and for good reason. Enriched by decades of classroom teaching, it is aimed explicitly at motivated students, regardless of their previous exposure to the Bible or faith commitments. The approach is ecumenical, in the sense that it seeks not to impose any particular theological perspective but to provide information and raise questions that should be relevant to any student.
Collins proceeds through the canon of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, judiciously presenting the current state of historical, archaeological, and literary understanding of the biblical text, and engaging the student in questions of significance and interpretation for the contemporary world.
The third edition is presented in a new and engaging format with new maps and images. An index has been added to the volume for the first time.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2019Clearly this book must be required reading for some kind of college course on the bible. The text is laid out generally in bible chronological order and or grouped into logical sub groups (like pre-exile prophets). If you are a bible literalist who accepts without question any and all things taught by traditional Christian denominations then this book is NOT for you. The authors point out all kinds of obvious errors/issues with time, places and events that are contradictory within the text or do not jive with outside the bible accepted evidence. They point out what other near east religions believed and how that impacted the belief system of the Hebrews. So if you are offended when they mention that other near east cultures have a flood story that influences the bible or when the authors say so and so is probably a legendary vs an actual person then this book is not for you. That said if you are interested in a book that gathers all the evidence both within and outside the bible and puts it out there for you to digest as you see fit then you will like this book. The language and grammar are on par with a high school text book and is easy to read, plainly written and easy to understand.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2018The book was required for my Hebrew Scripture class in Seminary. It is a great textbook and one that you will want to keep after class. The author does a good job of explaining the HS and giving you much-needed background information. I feel so much more informed and knowledgeable after reading this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2018I have other books by John Collins, all of which are excellent. This book is no exception. I highly recommend it, whether one is wanting it for research or simply to learn more about all books from the Hebrew Bible.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2019This book is fantastic. Collins presents the methodology that scholars use to study the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament) along with discussions of the cultural environment of the ancient Israelites and their neighbors.
Since the Hebrew Bible is over 2000 years old, written in an ancient language by individuals who lived at times and cultural locations very different from our own, we cannot understand it accurately without understanding it's cultural milieu. The Bible was not written in English. Every English translation requires that translators make choices in interpretation, so unless we read biblical Hebrew, which I don't, we are already one step removed from the text. The Hebrew Bible wasn't written by 21st century Westerners. We don't share the same culture, the same norms, the same expectations, the same quality of life, the same worldview. It's easy to read into these texts modern ideas that the ancient authors did not hold, and it's a mistake to do so. If you are a believer, imagine the mistake of "reading into" a biblical passage an idea that the ancient author did not intend and then believing that your own modern idea is actually God's word!
Collins elucidates these ancient texts by bringing together current scholarship from the fields of ancient languages, ancient history, textual and higher criticism, and archaeology. Some conclusions may rub against certain theological views, such as the idea of biblical inerrancy, for example. But even if you hold a contrary theological idea, and you do not intend to adjust it, there is value in understanding the current scholarly view and how that view came about. You will become a more informed believer.
