A Short Introduction to the Hebrew Bible: Third Edition Paperback – April 1, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
John J. Collins's A Short Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is one of the most popular introductory textbooks in colleges and seminary classrooms. Enriched by decades of classroom teaching, it is aimed explicitly at motivated students, regardless of their previous exposure to the Bible or faith commitments. This more compact version of Collins's renowned Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is combined with even more student-friendly features, including charts, maps, photographs, chapter summaries, and bibliographies for further reading.
Collins proceeds through the canon of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, judiciously presenting the current state of historical, archaeological, and literary understanding of the biblical text, and engaging the student in questions of significance and interpretation for the contemporary world.
The third edition is presented in a new and engaging format with new maps and images. An index has been added to the volume for the first time.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2020I have yet to read the entire book. However, the chapters that I have read were fantastic. The author provided an in-depth knowledge of the history and setting that surrounds the context of the Hebrew Bible without being overbearing and convoluted. It is appropriate for an introduction into the academic analysis of the text. I'm not too sure if this is enough for a theologian, though, but it is a fascinating read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2022So far, I have only read about 6 chapters but find all the background details extremely interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2019Does its job, though the added notes could be more well organized.
