- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2014Primarily a chess player, I've dabbled in Go on-and-off for many years. This is the best introductory series I've come across, by far. The Kim series is not even close... The author is obviously young and sometimes his enthusiasm seems a tad juvenile, but the content, organization and method of teaching are absolutely outstanding.
Yes, production values are not the best. The diagrams are sometimes squeezed or stretched giving the stones a slightly egg shape and making the squares rectangular. A very minor issue for me but I can see where others could be a tad taken-aback.
Just studying Volume I will put you ahead of the beginner's pack - it is really quite outstanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2010This is a great first book. If you are new to go and would like a gentle introduction to the game this book is for you. Hop has a great writing style that is light and humorous and makes the game feel very approachable.
I bought the book knowing the rules already but felt I should keep a beginner book around in case I needed it or to lend to someone. Even though I did not plan to read much of it it turned out to be a fun read and how many go books can you say that about.
After reading this I will be buying the second book in the series (So You Want to Play Go? Level 2) and see how it goes.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2018Best books I have found, logical clear explanations. 4 books in total. Listen to the author on Youtube, excellent.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2013The lessons are good, the content is good, I WILL be getting this set of books - with the SmartGo Books App on my iDevice. I imagine the Kindle edition is just as good.
Physical book review:
The cover is glossy and will stand up to plenty of use, bright colors and good color alignment. The paper is white and well cut, the print is clear and easy to read, so what is my problem?
The diagrams are not 'square'. Very often the diagrams show the board with rectangles and large ovals which really take away from the reading of the board. I'm expecting to see the grid with round stones and instead get something I can't visually get past. Ugh.
This is one case where you need to buy the electronic version over the physical book. Weird, huh?

5.0 out of 5 stars Ausgezeichnet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great for beginners
The detail of the book is completely informative about the basics.
The author is very comforting, not to say anything is slow, don't worry about that, the book is humorous, fun, and it also gives some nice information about the culture surrounding the game.

1.0 out of 5 stars full of flowery prose as he attempts to (quite unsuccessfully) imitate the style of regarded pro authors like Kageyama and Kajiw
This book, and its sequels are a mess. The author, an amateur, has written a meandering, messy introduction to Go, full of flowery prose as he attempts to (quite unsuccessfully) imitate the style of regarded pro authors like Kageyama and Kajiwara. There's been no attempt to seriously proofread or edit down these books into something leaner and refined.
The worst part is the diagrams - they are terrible. They are pixellated, distorted and inconsistent, clearly made in something like MSPaint. Whole series of pictures on a single page showing the progression of moves change from diagram to diagram - with point indicators missing completely, or borders shown when we're not actually anywhere near the border. Some of the diagrams are so distorted they're unreadable.
There is absolutely no reason to buy the first or second books when there are such comprehensive, well formatted and presented introductions like Janice Kim's series or The Second Book of Go. I have dipped into books 3 & 4 which do contain some useful information, but not anything unique from other books. Avoid this pedestrian effort like the plague.

3.0 out of 5 stars Three Stars
I find the writing style a little annoying
