源自中古英語 spekinge, spekynge, spekinde, spekende, spekande, spekand ← 古英語 specende, sprecende ← 原始日耳曼語 *sprekandz原始日耳曼語 *sprekaną ()的現在分詞。等同於speak +‎ -ing。與低地蘇格蘭語 speikand, speikin, 薩特弗里斯蘭語 spreekend, 西弗里斯蘭語 sprekkend, 荷蘭語 sprekend, 德國低地德語 sprekend, 德語 sprechend同源。
