Guidelines for user discussions on Yle’s services and social media accounts

Join the discussion! Share your thoughts on our services and social media channels. Your opinion is important to us. We may use your comments as such to enrich or develop our content.

To participate in discussions on Yle's services, you need an Yle ID.

We expect online discussion to be conducted in a good spirit, with respect for the opinions of other users.

Users are always responsible for the content of their posts, whether the content is text or other material. You can use your own name or a pseudonym. Please choose an appropriate and recognisable username.

Please do not choose a pseudonym or write messages that offend human dignity, incite criminal activity or are otherwise inappropriate.

If you pretend to be an Yle employee, your comment will be rejected and your participation in the discussion may be limited.

Discussion rules

  • Share your thoughts, listen, ask and give reasons for your opinion. Remember that everyone’s perspective is important.

  • Stay on topic. Aim for clear and concise expression. Lengthy comments may be rejected.

  • Do not repeat points that have already been made. Moderators look at the discussion as a whole and even a good comment may be rejected due to repetition.

  • Avoid profanities and writing in capital letters only.

  • We do not publish hate speech, such as threats, slander, infringements of privacy or racist comments.

  • We do not publish unnecessary comments on the appearance or character of a person, off-topic comments or unnecessary provocation.

  • We do not publish advertisements or political promotion.

  • As a rule, we do not publish links, hashtags (#) or comments with emojis only.

  • In the event of inappropriate or unlawful conduct, we may temporarily or permanently close discussion forums or block a user from a forum.

  • We may also refrain from publishing messages due to technical issues.

Moderation

Discussion in Yle’s services and on Yle’s social media channels is either pre-moderated or post-moderated.

Moderation is carried out by Yle’s and STT’s moderators.

Moderators can use AI as an aid to filter out clearly illegal messages and those messages that violate these guidelines for discussion. The positive moderation decisions are always made by people.

Feedback and complaints

You can report inappropriate comments on our discussion platforms using the inappropriate comment button. If you encounter inappropriate discussion on Yle’s social media channels, you can report a comment on social media, notify the administrator in a private message or contact our customer service.

You can also send feedback about moderation to our customer service.

If we have published incorrect factual information, you can send us a request for rectification or a response.

Yle’s discussion policy complies with Annex to Journalistic Guidelines and the conditions of the EU Digital Services Act.
