As a Michigan fan it pains me to write this review. It an excellent test of golf and the Ohio State Boys and Girls High School teams did extremely well. Very well laid out and ran to a T. It's just pains me to say anything nice about this place, only because I say GO BLUE!!

Top notch course lived up to its reputation as a challenging course! I had never played Scarlet before but glad I did and would definitely do it again! The Gray course looked just as fun without the bunkers to swallow up your ball! I have played the Gray course and it's just as nicely maintained and worthy of its own praise! If you have a person affiliated with the university you have to go a round here for sure or you could donate and become affiliated so you can have privileges to play at this semi-private oasis! O-O

Went for lunch with old retirees friends from OSU Neonatal Intensive Care. Place was reasonably priced and menu extensive. Plus there's a option of lunch buffet. I ordered the tuna melt with tomato and it was tasty. Service was attentive and rather speedy for such a large group.

I am not a golfer, but my son is. This time-tested, beloved tradition in Upper Arlington is wonderful. The only reason it does not garner five stars is because places in The British Isles exist where they have been playing for centuries.
The golf: two courses...the scarlet and the gray, names after OSU's school colors. The scarlet is a very difficult course and the gray is more of a course for players of a slightly lesser skill set. Decent pricing for OSU students, faculty, and staff. Check out the membership and usage packages that are available. Carts or walking are acceptable.
Great pro shop crammed full of OSU gear as well as a fine assortment of golf gear. On site pros are generally here, too, and I have heard nothing but good reviews of all of them. Great personnel usually means a great course.
The clubhouse facility: large upstairs bar with deck that looks onto the courses and an even larger banquet room you can rent for celebrations. Sunday brunch is served here, too.
This is a university facility, to be sure, but it exudes the upscale clubbiness most golfers and their parties seem to expect. Ample on site parking, and in a pinch, the Upper Arlington municipal building is across the street so you can park and dart.
My son and friends love to play here; I love to wait in the clubhouse watching sports or reading the newspaper. Check this place out if you need to golf in Columbus, but call ahead first to see if tee times are open. After almost 60 years of playing golf on public, country club, resort and muny courses I can say without a doubt that the OSU golf courses and "club house" are the worst managed venues of all time.
The two golf courses are ok, scarlet is more difficult, grey is easier. Unfortunately the original Alister Mackenzie scarlet course was disfigured by a Nicklaus redesign about 15 years when Nicklaus placed a ton of deep and monotonous Nicklaus style sand traps throughout the course, contrary to Mackenzie's original design with mostly shallow bunkers. Sand traps on the Grey course have sand put in them about once a decade, sand traps on scarlet are raked and evened out about as often. Greens on scarlet are an embarrassment for a so-called above average layout. And try to find a bathroom....there are maybe two "one holers" (no sinks) on the 36 holes, and most of the time they are out of order.
Playing the OSU courses you find out that golf etiquette is not a "Buckeye tradition". "Members" typically skip back and forth from one course to the other depending on how they feel, apparently. It is always frustrating to play 15 holes on grey only to find two new foursomes in front of you on the sixteenth tee. A ranger would be nice, as most high or even medium end munies have a ranger...not OSU...they do have "starters" , but they are too lazy to move from sitting in the starter shacks. Don't get me started on the condescending "lecture" you get from each starter before you step on the first tee.
Consistent with the golf course the food in the clubhouse is pretty average.
Overall, a poorly managed venue that gets by because its a Buckeye tradition. My review is of the Scarlet Golf Course.
It's a bit early to be all excited over playing an 18-hole round at the Ohio State University's Alistair McKenzie design golf course. Yet each and every time I step to the No. 1 tee box I realize I'm about to play one of the TOP 5 college courses in the nation.
"Scarlet" takes no prisoners. The course demands every skill set a golfer can muster. Length? Plenty - she'll open at 6,500 and stretch out to over 7,400 if you want to try the Web.com pro tees. Accuracy? Jack Nicklaus did a make-over of the bunkering about 6 - 7 years ago. They are deep. They are plentiful and they are unrelenting. Beauty? Three of the Front 9 holes play over water/lake. Five of the Back 9 holes cross over Turkey Run Creek and change elevation dramatically. Greens? "Scarlet" has some of the largest, most subtly undulating monsters in all of the Midwest. Quick quick quick, too.
To play "Scarlet" you have to have some kind of affiliation with Ohio State (student, alumni, Life Member, employee, etc.) The golf course allows carts and is a real challenge for walkers, especially the Back 9 holes.
If your game is solid and you want the REAL DEAL - visit OSU and play Scarlet Course. My first golf round of the Year 2013 and it is on the Gray Golf Course at The Ohio State University.
The skinny is this. The Gray Course greens now seem to be poa annua grass. It's early but their mottled look is definitely something golfers have to get used to. 03/31/13 - they were speedy. Lots of courses use poa annua grass for greens - not pretty but effective and hearty plant-life, too.
The Gray is a sub-6000 yard course and is wonderful to work out the early year kinks, especially with iron play. Yes, there are a few par-5 holes and one or two par-4 holes long enough for driver off the tee. Mostly, placement is key.
I walked 18 holes on a misty, cool day and got around by myself in 3.25 hours. The course will be in terrific shape in 2 - 3 weeks time. Really! The Scarlet course and the Gray course at Ohio State Golf Club are a perfect pair. The Scarlet gives the battle-tested golfer every bit the challenge. It's beauty is in it's design. The layout says, "C'mon... I'm right here in front of you. Come play me." Length? +7400 yards if you are insane. Design? You'll hit every club in a 14-club bag. Condition? Always sweet in Summer since the pros play it in late July. It is not for the meek but 18 holes on Scarlet is always highly rewarding.
The Gray course is nothing but loads of fun. For the accomplished golfer, the course places a premium on iron-play. A driver is only needed on the par-5s and a couple par-4s. As for beginners and novice golfers, the Gray has greens that are wide-open in the front so you're not dealing with having to fly sand traps. The course is usually in more pristine shape than Scarlet on the greens. Bring a putter that you love because you'll need to be sharp.
The newly renovated pub with its wrap around outdoor patio is a great place to end a round and enjoy some suds with golfing friends. The food menu is basic; I'd say go with the hot dogs and chips. Terrific dawgs!
Tee times are difficult if you're not a member but single players can get on Scarlet if you're willing to wait 1 hour in the mornings. Gray is less difficult. The fee for Scarlet at $70 might shoo away the larger group of publinx players but its worth it at least once. The Gray at $40 is more reasonable.
My feeling is that any golfer should tee it up on the Scarlet and the Gray at least once every Spring or Summer. A must see and must do! - Brandon H.Mason, OH070Apr 20, 2017
They have two courses: the scarlet course and the gray course. Both courses are in fantastic shape. The Scarlet course is longer and much more difficult. As a student I can play for $35 which isn't a bad deal. The bunkers are daunting and the greens are quick. With that being said, if you're expecting to shoot a good score you might as well play gray because its not gonna happen on scarlet. They have the Web.com tour event and even those guys struggle on Scarlet. Gray is much shorter (about 5,400 yards) and most holes are straight with very little trouble.

i will give the scarlet course props. the layout is pretty straight forward. the greens are meduim to large'ish, reasonable undulation but not over done. now for the rest of it, i guess Jack did a remodel of the bunkers, in my opinion they didnt flow with the rest of the track. so i feel the they are "Jacked up!!! " LOL!!! he just made it a little to tricked up (for my taste) the best thing is that they hold a nationwide tour event there, which helps the community. oh yea, do me a favor and DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT PLAYING FROM THE BACK TEE'S YOU AINT THAT GOOD!!!!!!! leave that for the Pro's
