Daniel Clark - TAG Candidate 2023

These are Daniel Clark's answers to the 2023 TAG Candidate Questions.

You can also read Daniel Clark's nomination statement here.

What's an interesting question about how the Web’s architecture should evolve that you've come across recently?

From the minutes...

I've been working on Edit Context. This is non-trivial for developers to pick up; a switch in thinking. New APIs should be simple to pick up and incrementally adoptable to build use cases in a gradual way. Sometimes it behooves us to make larger changes. CSS flex and grid are good examples; it's useful for developers to learn a new way of doing layout. Sometimes it's necessary to break with the past.

What are the technical trends you notice are happening on the Web, and what implications do you see for the work of the W3C?

From the minutes...

There are cases where TAG's expertise can be useful. On request of the Team it can be valuable for the TAG to weigh in on new WG charters. The TAG is strongest in responding to technical questions and design reviews. Doing design reviews more timely is important. It's important on a case-by-case basis for TAG to weigh in on charters but not at the expense of the core focus.

What should the TAG's role be in reviewing WG charters?

Answer here.

Maps are increasingly important, but maps are done in javascript today, making them inaccessible. How do you feel about adding maps to the web platform?

From the minutes...

This question aligns with work in the OpenUI Community Group. I suggest talking with that group; they've been trying to specify reusable components. It is interesting do apply this to maps. OpenUI is trying to resolve issues of customizable standard components.

How do you think the appointed TAG seats should be used?

From the minutes...

The appointees are a great opportunity for balancing the TAG on backgrounds and skills. It's a missed opportunity if the Team does not work with the TAG to identify candidates.

Has the TAG been taking the wrong approach in any of its recent activities, and if so, what would you change?

From the minutes...

The latency of design reviews is too long. Partly this is resources; I'm hoping the expansion by 2 seats will help. And look more at emerging areas. If reviews take too long it is less likely that browsers will ship with the new standards.
