Drake loses money, face

It wasn’t just $300,000 that Drake lost backing Canada’s soccer team in the Copa America semi-final. He also lost face as winner Argentina took sweet revenge on the rapper in a social media post.

he’d taken odds of +960 that his native Canada would beat Argentina

Drake had previously shared on Instagram that he’d taken odds of +960 that his native Canada would beat Argentina, while taking an ill-advised dig at one of the South American’s team’s favorite sons and captain, Lionel Messi.

In response to Drake’s “this could get Messi” post, Argentina took to X after beating Canada 2-0. The team used rap rival Kendric Lamar’s diss song “Not Like Us” to send the Canadian rapper a cutting message:

While a megastar like Drake can shake off missing out on the $2.88m payout, the roast by the reigning World Cup winners is likely more painful, with more than 2.1m views on Argentina’s X post as of early Wednesday morning.

On a losing streak

The Canadian rapper must be wondering where his next break is coming from. On the musical front, Kendrick Lamar’s “Just Like Us” track made mincemeat out of Drake. The classic diss track that continued a long lyrical feud between the two rivals has become a worldwide anthem since its May release.

According to blackamericaweb.com, Lamar’s “Just Like Us” was “Spotify’s biggest gainer for a hip hop song both in a single-day and in a week, two records once held by Drake” plus went straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on its debut. The music video of the track, meanwhile, has over 115 million YouTube views.

On the soccer side of things, Drake is a passionate and longtime supporter of his national men’s team. He has integrated soccer footage into his “Started from the Bottom” music video, and has proudly hyped up his hometown Toronto as the host of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

On Tuesday, however, goals from Julian Alvarez and Messi moved Argentina to the Copa final against Uruguay on Sunday, continuing Drake’s sorry run of betting form in 2024.

Curse shadow grows

In 2024, Drake’s sports betting picks have so far been dire.

In May, Drake lost $565,000 betting on Tyson Fury after he backed the Gypsy King to retain his WBC title against Oleksandr Usyk. Fury joins Conor McGregor, Anthony Joshua, and Jorge Masvidal as fighters “jinxed” by Drake betting on them.

Last month was no better, with Drake losing $500,000 when the Boston Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks over just five games in the NBA Finals. He had a carbon copy fail on the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs showdown between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers, losing $500,000 backing the Oilers.
