     Rear-Admiral David Charles Cairns, 5th Earl Cairns was born on 3 July 1909.1 He was the son of Wilfred Dallas Cairns, 4th Earl Cairns and Olive Cobbold.2 He married Barbara Jeanne Harrisson Burgess, daughter of Sydney Harrisson Burgess, on 16 April 1936.1 He died on 21 March 1989 at age 79.3
     He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He succeeded as the 5th Earl Cairns [U.K., 1878] on 23 October 1946.1 He succeeded as the 5th Viscount Garmoyle, co. Antrim [U.K., 1878] on 23 October 1946.1 He succeeded as the 5th Baron Cairns of Garmoyle, co. Antrim [U.K., 1867] on 23 October 1946.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1960.1 He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1961.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1961.1 He was President of the Navy League between 1966 and 1977.1 He held the office of Extra Equerry to HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1972.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1972.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Suffolk in 1973.1

     Barbara Jeanne Harrisson Burgess was born circa 1917.2 She was the daughter of Sydney Harrisson Burgess.3 She married Rear-Admiral David Charles Cairns, 5th Earl Cairns, son of Wilfred Dallas Cairns, 4th Earl Cairns and Olive Cobbold, on 16 April 1936.1 She died on 12 May 2000.2
     Her married name became Cairns. After her marriage, Barbara Jeanne Harrisson Burgess was styled as Countess Cairns on 23 October 1946.

     Wilfred Dallas Cairns, 4th Earl Cairns was born on 28 November 1865.1 He was the son of Hugh MacCalmont Cairns, 1st Earl Cairns and Mary Harriet MacNeile.2 He married Olive Cobbold, daughter of John Patteson Cobbold and Adela Harriette Dupuis, on 12 July 1894.1 He died on 23 October 1946 at age 80.1
     He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Somerset.1 He fought in the Boer War in 1902.1 He succeeded as the 4th Viscount Garmoyle, co. Antrim [U.K., 1878] on 14 January 1905.2 He succeeded as the 4th Baron Cairns of Garmoyle, co. Antrim [U.K., 1867] on 14 January 1905.1 He succeeded as the 4th Earl Cairns [U.K., 1878] on 14 January 1905.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1915.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the London Rifle Brigade.1

     Olive Cobbold was the daughter of John Patteson Cobbold and Adela Harriette Dupuis.2,3 She married Wilfred Dallas Cairns, 4th Earl Cairns, son of Hugh MacCalmont Cairns, 1st Earl Cairns and Mary Harriet MacNeile, on 12 July 1894.1 She died on 19 September 1952.1
     Her married name became Cairns. After her marriage, Olive Cobbold was styled as Countess Cairns on 14 January 1905.
