     Hugh Glencairn Balfour Paul was born on 23 September 1917 at Moniaive, Dumfries-shire, Scotland.2,3 He was the son of Lt.-Col. John William Balfour Paul and Muriel Cassels Monteith.1,3 He married Margaret Clare Ogilvy, daughter of Gilbert Francis Molyneux Ogilvy and Marjory Katharine Clive, on 29 June 1950.1 He married Jenny Scott in 1974.3 He died on 2 July 2008 at age 90 at Shobrooke, Crediton, Devon, England.3
     Hugh Glencairn Balfour Paul usually went by his middle name of Glencairn.1 He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.3 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1968.3 He held the office of Ambassador to Iraq between 1969 and 1971.3 He held the office of Ambassador to Jordan between 1972 and 1975.3 He held the office of Ambassador to Tunisia between 1975 and 1977.3 He wrote the book The End of the Empire in the Middle East, published 1991.3 He wrote the book A Kind of Kindness, published 2000.3 He lived in 2003 at Uppincott Barton, Shobrooke, Crediton, Devon, England.1 He wrote the book Bagpipes on Babylon, published 2006.3
