Brig.-Gen. Orlando George Gunning was born on 31 July 1867.1 He was the son of Colonel John Campbell Gunning and Mary Anne Boyson.3 He married Margaret Cecilia Dawkins, daughter of Clinton George Augustus Dawkins and Marianne Jane Robarts, on 1 November 1902.1 He died on 14 November 1917 at age 50.1
He fought in the Miranzai Expedition in 1891.1 He fought in the Dongola Expedition.1 He fought in the Malakand Expedition between 1897 and 1898, where he was mentioned in despatches twice and was severely wounded.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and Brevet Colonel in the 35th Sikhs, Indian Army.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier-General in the 36th Brigade, Indian Army.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.)1
