William Canynge1

     William Canynge was the son of John Canynge and Joan Wotton.2 He died in 1476.1
     He was Dean and founder of the College of Westbury.1 He held the office of Mayor of Bristol, five times.1 He was mentioned in Chatterton's Rowley poems.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Bristol, twice.1 He restored St. Mary Redcliffe Church.1 He lent money to King Edward IV, who suggested he marry one of Edward's illegitimate daughters as a reward, but he took holy orders instead.1
