Sir James Caldwell, 1st Bt. was born circa 1630.1 He was the son of John Caldwell and Mary Swettenham.1 He married, firstly, Catherine Hume, daughter of Sir John Hume, 2nd Bt. and Sidney Hamilton, circa May 1657.2 He married, secondly, Susanna (?) circa 23 July 1690.2 He died circa 13 February 1716/17.2 His will (dated 30 May 1711 to 20 March 1712/3) was proven (by probate) on 28 March 1717.2
In 1671 he purchased the estate of Wellsborough.1 He gained the rank of Captain of Horse.2 He lived at Castle Caldwell, Templecarne, County Fermanagh, IrelandG.1 He held the office of Sheriff of County Fermanagh in 1677.1 He was created 1st Baronet Caldwell, of Wellsburrow, co. Fermanagh [Ireland] on 23 June 1683.1 In 1689 he was attainted by the Irish Parliament of King James II.1 He gained the rank of Colonel of Foot in 1689.2
