Austin Graves Bates was born on 19 August 1891.1 He was the son of Sir Edward Percy Bates, 2nd Bt. and Constance Elizabeth Graves.1 He married Jean Christian Marguerite Hunter, daughter of James Havard Hunter and Jessie Louisa Scott-Kerr, on 15 December 1920.1 He died on 11 September 1961 at age 70.1
