     Professor Thomas Puttfarken was born on 19 December 1943 at Hamburg, Germany.2 He was the son of Franz Ferdinand Puttfarken.2 He married, firstly, Herma Zimmer in 1969.2 He and Herma Zimmer were divorced in 1981.2 He married, secondly, Elspeth Ann Crichton-Stuart, daughter of Major Michael Duncan David Crichton-Stuart and Barbara Symes, in 1981.1 He died on 5 October 2006 at age 62 at Essex, England.2
     He graduated from Hamburg, Germany, in 1969 with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)2 He was senior lecturer and reader between 1974 and 1984 at University of Essex, Colchester, Essex, England.2 He was professor of art history and theory between 1984 and 1986 at University of Essex, Colchester, Essex, EnglandG.2 He wrote the book Roger de Piles' Theory of Art, published 1985.2 He wrote the book The Discovery of Pictorial Composition: Theories of Visual Order in Painting, 1400-1800, published 2000.2 He was appointed Fellow, Briitsh Academy (F.B.A.) in 2003.2 He lived at Wivenhoe, Colchester, Essex, EnglandG.1 He wrote the book Titian and Tragic Painting, published 2005.2
