Richard Newport, 1st Baron Newport of High Ercall1

     Richard Newport, 1st Baron Newport of High Ercall was born on 7 May 1587.2 He was the son of Sir Francis Newport and Beatrix Lacon.2 He married Rachael Leveson, daughter of Sir John Leveson, before 1615.2 He died on 8 February 1650/51 at age 63 at Moulins, FranceG.2
     He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 19 October 1604.2 He graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 12 June 1607 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shropshire in 1614.2 He was appointed Knight on 2 June 1615 at Theobalds, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shrewsbury between 1620 and 1622.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shropshire between 1624 and 1626.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shropshire between 1626 and 1629.2 He was created 1st Baron Newport of High Ercall, co. Shropshire [England] on 14 October 1642, for his loyalty to the Royal cause.2 He retired to France after the murder of King Charles I.2
     Clarendon wrote that "his eldest son, Francis Newport, of great expectation, and excellent parts ... that if his father might be made a baron, he did believe he might be prevailed with to present his majesty with a good sum of money." Gibbs states that "the King, though very loath to make 'merchandise of honour,' was prevailed upon by his necessities to agree to the creation, whereupon Sir Richard 'presented the sum of £6,000 to his majesty.2' "

Rachael Leveson1

     Rachael Leveson was the daughter of Sir John Leveson.1 She married Richard Newport, 1st Baron Newport of High Ercall, son of Sir Francis Newport and Beatrix Lacon, before 1615.2 She died on 31 January 1661 at London, EnglandG.2
     From before 1615, her married name became Newport.2 After her marriage, Rachael Leveson was styled as Baroness Newport of High Ercall on 14 October 1642.

     Sir John Leveson was born on 21 March 1555 at Whornes Place, Cuxton, Kent, England.2 He was the son of Thomas Leveson and Ursula Gresham.2 He married, firstly, Margaret Manwood, daughter of Sir Roger Manwood, on 27 April 1579.2 He married, secondly, Christian Mildmay, daughter of Sir Walter Mildmay and Mary Walsingham, on 9 July 1586.2 He died on 14 November 1615 at age 60 at Whornes Place, Cuxton, Kent, England.2
     He lived at Haling, Kent, EnglandG.1
