From Old Swedish skilsmæssa, arguably equivalent to skilja + -s- + mässa. The exact origin of the latter compound term is disputed. Either from the word mässa (“[Christian] mass”) or from missa (“to miss; to lose”). Compare Norwegian skilsmisse and Danish skilsmisse.
