Ilocano
Etymology
Ultimately from Proto-Philippine *alagad. Compare Cebuano alagad (“to rely on”). Unlike in Tagalog and other Philippine languages, where alagad means “follower”, “disciple”, or “servant”, the Ilocano word means “what is followed”, “model”, “guide”, “pattern”, or “standard”. As a root word, variations can mean “regulation”, “constitution”, “design”, or “to follow rules or plans”, where the verb is similar to the ones in Tagalog and other Philippine languages (e.g., pagalagaden, umalagad, alagaden).
