con (“child”) + nít (“small (of a child)”); the second element is from Proto-Vietic *ɗiːt (“small”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kɗit ~ *kɗiit ~ *kɗiət. Cognate with Riang [Lang] kᵊndiət² ("small"), Khasi khyndiat (“few, little”), Mon ဍောတ်.
